God bless romhackers. Making stuff like this while knowing full well that it'll never escape the pit of extreme obscurity takes an immense amount of passion and will.
Thanks for pointing that out. Was really confused for a moment...Doesn't help that they have "original game 1986" in the image.. *Though looking up a lets play of the 1986 one shows the real soundtrack is pretty good.
Life Hack is an S tier ring tone. When I first heard this, I was like there is no way that NES could do this. It was sad but also sensible that it wasn't NES Era, but still shows the power of bit music.
I'm unfamilliar with layla, much less any rom hacks of it, but this is one of the best NES ost's I've ever heard. The rom hacker did a great job with the soundtrack.
Threw me. At some point I thought, "surely thats reverb!" but then it didnt last long, and there was ample regular delay in the style of old NES, so I thought, "Im just not listening hard enough, NES didnt have reverb". This is great stuff, love all the modulations.
It's not the height of 2A03's capabilities, but it's still great considering these songs were composed on dB-SOFT's poor sound driver. "Sound driver" is the part of game's code that's responsible for how music and in-game effects sound (and these themselves are stored within the game's code - the PRG ROM), this is what makes Konami, Capcom or Nintendo games have their distinct, recognizable vibe, despite running on the same hardware (I don't count expansion chips here). And if you played some of those bootleg NES/Famicom games, you might have noticed that their sound is quite off due to possible accidental alternations of the sound driver by pirates. So it's not just the hardware that SupperTails66 pushed to its limits, but mainly the software, a barely documented one at that. What's more amazing is that he wrote all the songs in ImpulseTracker and then made his own application called Clapton to inject the music modules as the sound data within game's ROM. And his own level editor specifically for the purpose of this hack.
@@PrekiFromPoland I would have never known this wasn't a custom driver. Really, thank you for this information : all this work on the creator's part makes it all the more wonderful.
Is this a sequel to the game Layla? I came here just looking for the awesome into music for Layla and found this :) Layla was one of those rare games that I found out about and liked long after the era it was released, which is very rare since most of our favorites from back then have the advantage of having nostalgia raise their score in our minds. Layla just blew me away when I tried it emulated. :)
Never heard of this game before. I want a switch remake. It's an under rated hidden gem. Has an incredible sound track. Piano youtubers should really do this sound track too. Someone suggest this sound track to Smooth Mcgroove.
Remake would be nice, that's for sure, but dunno who holds the rights to dB-SOFT's game library as of now and if they would be interested in a remake/reboot in the first place. Well, then there are always crazy doujin developers in Japan...
Hack's author had this same limited sound engine to work with, so technically they could pull it off in 1986. They just... didn't, not everyone is a skilled musician, besides that the original game was made by a little-known company with possibly limited budget.
That replaced the original soundtrack by Yasuhito Saito, who also did all versions of Woody Poko, and later various Data West games such as the RayXanbeR trilogy and the Psychic Detective series.
Fuck ive been listening to this since 4 days now, how the fuck i didnt knew this ost, prolly because its a nes hack game ost... DAMN THATS SO GOOD, this sound like tim follin and nes megaman ost had a baby.
wAIT WHAT THE FUCK THE SOUND ENGINE IS NOWHERE NEAR AS BAD AS THE ORIGINAL HOW This ROM hack seems really amazing in every aspect, I need to try this out soon.
Be warned though - the very last portion of the game is infuriating, even if you have limitless continues at your disposal (think of Ninja Gaiden level of frustration). But after going through it you can call it a day. I've beaten the game yesterday, totally legit - no savestates used. And the bonus level is pure genius xD
This soundtrack is absolutely amazing at a compositional level (and at a more technical level too, in how it takes this driver's capabilites to the max). I'd only wish the higher frequencies weren't so grating. Was it actually that hard to just turn the volume down in this sound driver?
HORY SHET! The amount of super high ear piercing notes in this game's OST is insane! How did this pass playtesting? Do the playtesters not have ears or something?
Deberían hacer buenas músicas así , pero mejor, parece un poco mal, pero deberian mejorar la música, lgunas músicas se suenan mal. deberían hacer beuna músicas e emosión y acción, también deberían ser tipo a la música de meditación.

@@Margatroid Thanks to them.
Yes
Ok - now I got it: the music is from 2017. "Iris Missions" is a Romhack of the original Layla from 1986, which had another soundtrack.
Thanks for pointing that out. Was really confused for a moment...Doesn't help that they have "original game 1986" in the image..
*Though looking up a lets play of the 1986 one shows the real soundtrack is pretty good.
Ah, okay...i was confused over this as well. The music sounds a bit more advanced than I'd expect from an 80s nes game
Life Hack is an S tier ring tone. When I first heard this, I was like there is no way that NES could do this. It was sad but also sensible that it wasn't NES Era, but still shows the power of bit music.
This just blows my mind. I hope this guy releases more stuff like this... I love this kind of stuff.
This bumps in the whip! You can totally hear the Tim Follin influence.
No, for me it seems to have more of a Streets of rage influence, especially at 28:53
For real, some instances I couldn't tell if it was composed by Tim Follin.
Tim Follin es un mojón de compositor
Dunno man but it sounds more NES Natsume stuff than anything Tim Follin. I just don't feel the prog rock vibes here ☹️.
I like how all the comments here are from people who think this is the Layla soundtrack as opposed to an overeager romhacker's banger of a soundtrack
I’d say this was exactly the right amount of eager!
Ah! Well, that would explain why the portrait on the title screen, is uglier than I remembered! XD
@@Icelink256 No, that's just because of wonky filtering on the image.
This soundtrack is so ridiculously epic.
where the hell did this come from how is this just reaching me now

Rarely does 2A03 sound so mindblowing. The length the chip is pushed to here showcases how far our knowledge of it has come.

Why aren't there more views? This is brilliant!!!

I was just trying this game today
1986..? I'm impressed. It sounds so 90s.

Anyone have a working download link? The OP's mediafire link is dead.
Iris (B Mix)? What, is SilvaGunner gonna rip this game next? Already got the title for one anyhow.
> just had a first listen @ this and it's mind blowing. I wonder what drugs was the music writer on? :D
神曲多すぎで1986年のファミコンとは思えない! 特に9:20の曲が最高です。
この音楽は1986年からではない。。。これは改造版の音楽で、2017年からと思います。
This is the most amazing thing that I have ever heard. How is this from 1986?!!??
I just looked it up. The original game is from 1986, but this is from a recently released ROM hack :)
And music from the original game isn't good as this soundtrack.
swedez I don't think anyone from 1986 could make music like this, it would be way ahead of its time.
Hack's author had this same limited sound engine to work with, so technically they could pull it off in 1986. They just... didn't, not everyone is a skilled musician, besides that the original game was made by a little-known company with possibly limited budget.
PrekiFromPoland Yeah, people back in 1986 didn't have the musical knowledge to produce such a song.
He's back!
grad1u5 is back baby!!
I was looking for the soundtrack to the original game and accidentally found a hack
and it's very cool
AWESOME !
This soundtrack beat the mega man soundtrack >:D
Sounds like Terminator 2 on NES a little bit.
YES, especially the secon song
VS. the actual original Layla composed by Yasuhito Saito who later worked for Data West:

Trash sound engine, but really good melodies. Like, I can see potential in the music, but it's extremely rough.
Yay, you're back!
Can you re-upload the soundtrack on mediafire?
This is one of the few old school games that has modern chip tune sounding music. 30 years ahead of the trend.
O_o ... i have played layla. And this... Never heard
It's from a ROMhack.
-_- ... hmmm... that's why.
hi
Labyrinthine
Is there a way to re-upload the ost?
Is not longer in the current link on mediafire
Impressive soundtrack, for a ROM Hack.
So this games original soundtrack wasn’t very good and someone remade it? It sounds addicting now 🙂
The original composer is Yasuhito Saito(斉藤 康仁), but this soundtrack was composed by SupperTails66.
This is absolutely phenomenal! Who composed this!?
Hack's author, SupperTails66.
That replaced the original soundtrack by Yasuhito Saito, who also did all versions of Woody Poko, and later various Data West games such as the RayXanbeR trilogy and the Psychic Detective series.
