When Second Amendment activist Brent Holmes started showing up at police brutality protests in Richmond, Virginia, over the summer while carrying an assault rifle across his chest, passersby would cheer him on.
"'Yes, yes, he gets it,'" Holmes says. "He knows that he has those rights, too.'"
Holmes, who also wears a red baseball cap with the words "I CAN'T BREATHE" embroidered across the front, is part of a community of black gun-rights activists who have been showing up armed to protests in several American cities.
"You have this history well before the Civil War of organized black self-defense in Northern communities," says George Washington University Professor of Law Robert J. Cottrol, editor of Gun Control and the Constitution: Sources and Explorations on the Second Amendment (1994). Guns have been essential for protecting black civil rights since the antebellum period, Cottrol tells Reason.
Following "the tremendous push" for black voter registration in the 1950s and '60s, when the Ku Klux Klan decided to try to "intimidate and kill" those who were involved, Cottrol says, "you have [armed] groups beginning to be formed designed to protect the black community and the Civil Rights community."
"I believe that I'm channeling my ancestors," says Holmes.

That professor was good. There's a long and honorable history of American blacks arming themselves with firearms for the purpose of self-defense and defending their communities from evil violence. The Deacons for Defense and Justice, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells ("A Winchester rifle deserves a place of honor in every black home.")
However, the black chauvinists in this video are just very ill-informed. There was major outrage within the gun rights community at the Philando Castile case, although the NRA leadership (who gun rights activists revile) only issued a mild statement of concern. It is not "normal" for white men to walk on city streets with rifles and they attract just as much scrutiny as black men doing so. Does he really think local "Karens" don't find open carry displays scary and offensive?
I would have liked to have seen black gun rights activist featured in this who actually interact with the larger gun rights community. People who conduct training and actually are great ambassadors for gun rights, not some untrained people who picked up a gun for the first time last week and who may endanger themselves and others with unsafe firearms handling. I'm talking activists like Maj Toure, founder of Black Guns Matter, former NRA spokesman Colion Noir, black range owners and firearms trainers like Rick Ector of Rick's Firearms Academy in Detroit who gives hundreds of (mostly black) women free safe shooting classes every year, and black gun organizations like the National African-American Gun Association (yes, their acronym is NAAGA, which I think was deliberate given how much they joke about it). Most of these black gun rights activists are sympathetic and sensitive to the concerns of the larger black community, but they also have more experience with gun politics and frankly know a lot more about what they're talking about when it comes to the intersection of blacks and guns then a bunch of protesters who have just discovered gun right and are marching around with these guns as props while shouting about "black power" and demanding less lawfulness and law enforcement in crime-ridden communities. Reason should have interviewed some of them for this video. They would have even found some libertarians.

David P I guess it can look like that if you are looking at the issue superficially. There is not an obviously high murder rate when white peoples come in contact with law enforcement. If it were so we all should be demanding justice for all of the white people “unjustly” killed by the police.
The fact that a police officer shoot a suspect is in its self not the problem. The problem is when it’s unjustified ( emphasis). Handcuffed individuals lying on their stomachs with an officer’s knee on his neck is unjustified. So is choking a man to death for the terrible crime of selling cigarettes. The list goes on and on. If the problem was mostly against white people, I would be shoulder to shoulder with you on this subject.
I want to be clear. Any unjustified killings of any one is not ok. When a white homeless man was murdered near me in Orange County, CA I was outraged because the poor man was suffering from mental illness and was homeless, and the homeless getting treated like dirt and I can relate. Many people demanded accountability from law enforcement.... we are still waiting.
With that being said, the senseless murder of black people is in a different ballpark, and has been so for hundreds of years. So, to answer for the gentleman, he is not unset with the NRA simply because the murder victim was black. The NRA seems to always be mum on the issue of police violence. Which the bulk of is against people of color.
I myself is a Lifetime NRA member, and this issue has been on my mind for the past year. It’s a complicated issue. There are no simple solutions that everyone would agree on.
Lastly, I don’t want anyone to be killed by the cops. No matter there color. It appears too much of America is choosing to ignore people’s plights because it’s not their problem. Cops (not all) see black men all threatening on sight. I have to overly make my voice more cheerful because I’m terrified I might make an officer jumpy. It usually gets better once I talk about my military career. Many have similar backgrounds. I try hard to share this with my white brothers and sisters, but some just say I have nothing to worry about. Wow! It must be nice to be that relaxed around police.

You sure about that? “We did not find evidence for anti-Black or anti-Hispanic disparity in police use of force across all shootings, and, if anything, found anti-White disparities when controlling for race-specific crime.” Research paper from University of Michigan and University of Maryland - www.pnas.org/content/116/32/15877
Also, "When examining reaction time to shoot in deadly scenarios, we found that officers took significantly longer to shoot armed Black suspects than armed White suspects (f = 3.58; df = 2,870; p < .05). When holding all other variables constant (including suspect demeanor, language, dress, distance from participant, movement, location, sound, and light levels), officers took an average 200 ms longer to shoot armed Black suspects than armed White suspects." From the same study, "we found that officers were slightly more than three times less likely to shoot unarmed Black suspects than unarmed White suspects."
We have a study showing that officers take longer to shoot black suspects than white suspects and that they are three times less likely to shoot unarmed black suspects vs unarmed white suspects. You claim there is no high murder rate, and I agree, but it the rate is HIGHER for whites than blacks. I still don't want my police defunded.
"The fact that a police officer shoot a suspect is in its self not the problem. The problem is when it’s unjustified ( emphasis). Handcuffed individuals lying on their stomachs with an officer’s knee on his neck is unjustified."
Tell me the handcuffed individual with an officer's knee on his neck that was shot. If you're talking about George Floyd, he OFFERED to go to the ground instead of being put in the cop car. The knee restraint was the PD's taught and approved restraint method.
"So is choking a man to death for the terrible crime of selling cigarettes."
The cop started choking the guy as soon as he saw him selling cigarettes? Please show me the video of the victim selling cigarettes and the cop IMMEDIATELY chocking him to death. Again, I'll wait.
"The list goes on and on."
But you won't bother listing more than two...
"If the problem was mostly against white people, I would be shoulder to shoulder with you on this subject."
No, you shouldn't. I've already detailed more unarmed white people have been killed by police in 2019. Just because a cop shoots someone doesn't mean the cop was wrong. The situation matters, and I'd be willing to say the vast majority of unarmed whites killed by cops in 2019 were justified shootings.

88.6% of murdered black people are murdered by other black people. - ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2019/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019/topic-pages/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-6.xls
"So, to answer for the gentleman, he is not unset with the NRA simply because the murder victim was black. The NRA seems to always be mum on the issue of police violence. Which the bulk of is against people of color."
Because police are forced to interact with people of color at a disproportionate rate. Blacks make up 13ish% of the US population, yet account for 26.6% of arrests. They account for 51.2% of murder arrests, 26.7% of rape arrests, 52.7% of robbery arrests, 33.2% of aggravated assault arrests, 28.8% of burglary arrests, 30.2% of larceny arrests, 28.6% of motor vehicle theft arrests, 24.7% of arson arrests. 36.4% of all Violent Crime arrests are because 13% of the population. ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2019/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019/topic-pages/tables/table-43
Maybe you don't like arrests because you think the racist cops are arresting people on racist ideas, so let's look simply at the crimes. 39.6% of all murders were done by blacks in 2019. ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2019/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-3.xls
"I myself is a Lifetime NRA member, and this issue has been on my mind for the past year. It’s a complicated issue. There are no simple solutions that everyone would agree on."
      True.
"Lastly, I don’t want anyone to be killed by the cops."
That seems like a childish view. I think a person trying to kill a cop is a justified target. They don't deserve to die, but they forfeit their Right to life by trying to take the life of others. I think a person trying to kill an innocent third party is a justified target in the same way.
      "No matter there color."
I agree, anyone trying to kill an innocent person, no matter the color of attacker, cop, or target, has forfeited their Right to live.
"It appears too much of America is choosing to ignore people’s plights because it’s not their problem."
Well that's an unsubstantiated claim. How much is too much? 1 person? 1 million people?
"Cops (not all) see black men all threatening on sight."
And yet studies show that cops take longer to fire on black suspects. Cops are less likely to shoot unarmed black suspects. More unarmed white people were killed by cops in 2019 than unarmed black people.
"I have to overly make my voice more cheerful because I’m terrified I might make an officer jumpy. It usually gets better once I talk about my military career. Many have similar backgrounds. I try hard to share this with my white brothers and sisters, but some just say I have nothing to worry about. Wow! It must be nice to be that relaxed around police."
It isn't about being relaxed around police. It's knowing that it is practically statistically guaranteed that any suspect that is obeying the officer's directions is going to live to see another day. I'm afraid of spiders, but I don't check under my bed every night for black widows.

I know I’m wasting me breath. If it were your people for generations get killed by the patrollers, the Klan, & cops you would understand, but talking to people who can feel safe in their own skins & argue with a police officer and live to tell the tale (usually white women) is a waste of time. You don’t sweat when the police puts up behind you. Why would you? Your skin threatens no one. I walk down the street in my neighborhood and I have to answer police questions: “where are you headed “ “do you live around here” “do you have ID” “why are you getting defensive sir?” This happens to the point I don’t walk anymore. You won’t get it. Like I said, wasted breath.

The disproportionate funding‘s for schools. The over policing of communities of color. Death when coming into contact with law-enforcement. All of these our problems that have led to where we are now. So you trying to conjure up the feelings of hate groups is a weak point.
If you don’t see a problem with people dying at the hands of police because they were selling illegal cigarettes, driving in the car, being pulled over because of broken tail light, or sleeping in your bed. If you’re still going to try to look for stupid information to deny what I’m talking about we can just cut this conversation off.

I think they were meaning that it is a black movement for gun-rights, not a movement for special gun-rights for blacks. It is a poorly worded title though.

There were two main subjects in this video. The thinner man was at Lobby Day in downtown Richmond and from what I gathered, he was completely welcomed. I'm not sure if the bigger guy was there, but I hope he goes this time. Gun owners aren't afraid of black people with guns, because "gun owners" is a group of people that includes black people. The ones who don't want it are the people in power (like mom's demand action) who can't stand the idea that other people are capable of protecting themselves and their rights.

This is why People have to learn that a movie or a game or a video or music it is just that you don’t have to go out there and pretend that everything you see is the way your life Is

Now i am all for everyone that can pass a background check being armed. But not a fan of someone walking down the road with a rifle while wearing a communist symbol marching with a group that has caused billions in damage and attacked countless police. Tearing down statues that do not belong to you is a crime. You want those statues down thats fine. Vote on it. Have them taken down. Destroying property that isnt yours just makes you a criminal. The police that murder people need to go to prison but so do the people that attack any random cop just because they are a cop. One crime will never justify another short of all out war. Bringing a civil war to the US would be a bloodbath. We have more guns than people and anyone that wants to push for that war or violent revolution is asking for trouble. All BLM has done is make people more racist than they have been in a long time. You want to make people hate your cause all you have to do is piss them off. MLK would be disgusted by what blm does.

“I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice,” King wrote. “[W]ho constantly says: ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action’; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a ‘more convenient season.’ Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."
Martin Luther king jr would not agree with you at all, because your the same white moderate he is described as a greater stumbling block to justice then the KKK.

@@plaid13 "I am like the KKK." No... you're worse. Remember Reverend Marthin luther king jr described the white moderate as "greater stumbling block." You would've opposed Kings marches as being too violent and wonder "why don't they just vote." You'd opposed the White's only counter sit In by black activists and yell "that's illegal!" And you'd definitely oppose Black Panthers open carry of fire arms despite it being legal in the State of California and scream "TERRORISTS!"

They killed dozens of people in the riots. They took over parts of cities and chased out everyone else. They are terrorists. If you do not think so you are just a fool. I dont judge people by race I judge them by what they do. When they are out destroying cities fuck em they are not protesting they are rioting. Walking around armed during a riot trying to force their beliefs on people = terrorist.
