I really miss Jim Leyland. He was the Pirates manager when I became a baseball fan as a kid back in '88. After the 1990 playoffs I sent him a letter to let him know it was ok. lol He sent back a handwritten note thanking me for the letter and enclosed a signed baseball card. I've been a huge fan ever since - to the point that I was rooting for Detroit every bit as much as Pittsburgh during his tenure there.

This really hits you as a big tiger fan. 2013 we had everything Tori Hunter came in, hitting and starting pitching was excellent. Felt like magic was coming. But then we lost in the 2013 ALCS like they said. Even worse they hired a rookie manager named Brad Ausmus. We had everything to win the 2014 world series. But we got swept in the division series. I was shocked in 2015 to see my beloved tigers fell in last place. Lets give 2016 a try shall we? Well it was an improvement we did win more games but not enough to get into the playoffs. Time passes 2017 they had to destroy the organization by trading Verlander, Alex Avila, Justin Upton and JD just for prospects just to get good in the future. We are probably gonna have to wait another 2-4 years to see our beloved tigers win the world series.

It's really hard to go through what the Tigers are going through now, but I think if they continue to build through the draft and make some good trades, they could be a very good team in 2-3 years. You look at the Tigers of the late 1970's when Mark Fidrych was the best player they had. They were a bad team, but then Sparky Anderson arrived and within 5 years, they win a World Series. Detroit was bad before Sparky got there, but they had a very talented nucleus: Jack Morris, Alan Trammell, Lance Parrish, Kirk Gibson, Lou Whitaker, Dan Petry, Tom Brookens, etc. The foundation was there. They just needed the right manager. I don't know if Ron Gardenhire is that guy, but he's had success in the past turning teams around in Minnesota.

@@coreygolphenee9633 He is a good hitter no doubt. But Jim pushing the button like he did with Benioit was a disaster. Could have intentionally walked him. The series could have went to 7 games at least. I would have liked that more tbh. No matter if the Sox wins or tigers win. If the series went to 7 it would have been better. But it is the past.

@@Michiganrailfan my biggest problem with that team as a young fan from a far away place will always be explaining how good that pitching staff was versus what happened

This man should’ve won more than just 1 ring. He and Dusty Baker should get together sometime to have a cup of coffee. They both had excruciating playoff losses. Most famously Baker in 2003 Game 6 NLCS, and Leyland in Game 7 1992 NLCS

And that's the reason Verlander left as well. As a Tiger fan you lost count how many games he lost 1-0, 2-1, or how many times he went into the 7th,8th inning and had the closers fall apart.

I saw Leland after that game. I was walking down the ramp at Fenway in the crush of fans having just seen the best thing I’d ever seen on a field and he just walks by with a few cops surrounding him. Jim Leland. Not in the bowels of Fenway in some protected hall or tunnel. Right there with us. “Hey Jim.” I just blurted it out. I was so surprised. I was elated because I knew we would win the series after that but it would’ve been bitter sweet if I’d known I’d just seen the beginning of the end of his great career.

its ok jimmy you can always look back and remember that you were apart and won one of the most crucial world series game 7's in baseball history. not only that you won it for us south floridians. me and my father were at that game in 97' and that day is if not the most cherished, one of the most cherished moments of my childhood and it wouldn't have happened without you mr. layland. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart.

Sometimes managers over think things. Leyland has made some good moves but unfortunately some really really bad ones.
