As a Hindu , I felt it to be my duty to tell you about this. The tandav dance is associated with Lord Shiva, the third among the hindu trinity of great Gods, the other 2 being Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. The three of them are in charge of the creation, sustenance and destruction of the cosmos, though it would be better to know Shiva as lord of transformation, as he is often associated with the creation that comes out of destruction.
Lord Shiva used to perform the tandav when he was very angry (it would be proper to cite here that Lord Shiva is well known for his terrifying rage) . There are very few instances in Hindu Mythology when Lord Shiva did this dance , I personally know only three of them. But whenever he would do it, the condition of the cosmos would be terrifying, with horrible lightning, volcanoes erupting, tsunamis occurring etc. Another thing associated with his terrible rage is the opening of his third eye, which is located vertically on the centre of his forehead.
And the thing you are calling a song is actually a Sanskrit hymn, known as Shiv Tandav Stotram which was composed by Ravana, a great devotee of Shiva.
The composition of this hymn too has an interesting story -
Ravana was a demon (Asura) by race but had acquired great strength and miraculous powers from lord Shiva due to his devotion. These powers made Ravana egoistic and he went to Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva and his wife Goddess Parvati. To show off his powers, Ravana single handedly lifted the entire mountain !! At that point Lord Shiva decided too break his pride and increased the weight of the mountain by stamping down with a single foot. Ravana's hands couldn't take that weight and were crushed under the mountain. At that point Ravana composed this hymn - the Shiv Tandav Stotram and sang it to Lord Shiva in order to please him. A satisfied Shiva lifted his foot off the ground and drew back his hands.

Lord shiva created this form of dance call tandav nritya. He is a destroyer when his fiercest side rudra beheaded,father of his first wife sati..When she died by jumping in fire..Then lord shiva did perform tandav nritya which was too scary.

@@Dev-ie1ez no not every shloka has to be recited or heard many times. They have their own power and the vibes they create can sometimes be not what your body or spirit needs. Just like gayatri mantra...it can turn harmful. Don't listen to it that often.

@@Dev-ie1ez gayatri mantra is for right side of our para sympathetic nervous system i.e chakras. The naadi on our right side is called Pingla naadi which is very active and gives us heat.. not physically but spiritually too. So when you keep on reciting gayatri mantra which is devoted to an incarnation of adishakti called as gayatri, who destroys the asuras, the right side becomes more active than necessary which can cause harmful effects on body and spirit. You have to stay in the middle..neither on the left nor on the right side.
This is not a normal dance form.. Its probably universe's most ancient dance form ever. Great lord of time amd death, lord shiva does this at the ultimate end... This is a representation of a graceful annihilation of universe.
Just once visit to varansi(Nagari of shiva) you will definitely fall in love and enjoy the aroma.

Each one of these Gods have a female counterpart to them as well. It's said that upon the death of his wife, Shiv got so mad that he started doing the tandav which started shaking and destroying parts of the three worlds (heaven, earth and hell). The Gods had to rush to calm him down before he destroyed all of humanity.
A dance which I think you will find interesting is the Shiv Ardhnareshwar dance in which one person is part man and part woman, signifying both male and female energies.
