Horizons - Martins Complete Ultimate Tribute

  • The fifth in my brand new Futureworld re-edits, and a real labour of love.
    Follow the development of the pavilion from a GE fair in Futureworld west to the pavilion it eventually became in Futureworld East. See how the story evolved, the ride developed, how the track and show scenes were designed and laid out and then watch as the pavilion went from nothing to dedication in 19 months.
    And then, take the trip you've always dreamed of in a 40 minute, multi camera extravaganza. As much detail has been covered as possible, every show scene, every projection. Each projection screen has been flicker reduced or eliminated, each shot of the ride enhanced where possible. Walk into the pavilion and begin your journey in the Futureport to see the trio of destinations available aboard Horizons One. Follow the queue and then take you seat for a continuously moving omnimover ride from the past and into the future. Highlights include complete source quality loops of all 3 Movies of Yesteryear screens, the full Omnimax loop, and all 3 ending choices in full and of high quality.
    Audio wise, each animatronic conversation is clean live but is in full and with hopefully the clearest quality audio available to date. Each spiel was edited together from dozens of recordings for completeness and the best available quality. All sound effects are clean and enhanced, and the musical score and in-car narration is of course of source quality.
    Many call Horizons the best dark ride ever.
    I hope I've done it justice.
    71 minutes long.

    I was an "imagineer" at MAPO / WED from 1979 - 1982 and built the "barber shop man" at timecode 33:26. I never got to go to Epcot to see him in action or any of the other figures I built at EPCOT at the time. Disney notoriously underpaid employees but I didn't care because it was a fun place to work, so I couldn't afford to make the trip. I have a photo of me at my work bench with the "barber shop man" almost complete but apparently You Tube doesn't allow image posts in its comments. Someday I may post it on my blog and link to it.
    My main reason of this post is to thank you from the bottom of my heart to finally see my figure in action. You are providing a very valuable service to this community and I can rest knowing I have finally seen him operating and I have you to thank for that. All the best to you!

      See this is the real purpose of the internet. I never thought I'd get to holla at the person who made the barber shop dude. Just finished watching. Watching this video should be mandatory for all senior Disney executives who are trying to jam IPCOT down our throats. This is what built the company. This video was a roller coaster of emotions....happiness of memories riding my my own 3 kids and sadness I can never bring my new grandchild on it to experience. I'm so glad that Martin didn't include any pictures of them tearing down the building. That would be very sad.... And in its place we got a soulless attraction.

    I love how Disney knows EXACTLY what us EPCOT Center fans want. Getting rid of Horizons, replacing Captain EO, putting Nemo in The Living Seas, making Figment a middle school prankster, making a middle aged man miserable, turning a ride about the mythology and economy of Norway into a Frozen boat ride, closing down most of Innoventions, not reopening WoL, and possibly tearing down UoE. Man, Disney DEFINITELY knows what we want!

      Give it some time and see what Disney has planned with the money they're putting aside for Epcot's upcoming new additions/changes. My hopes aren't high, but they're apparently promising new additions to the park that are more in tune with the old vision of Epcot, so there's at least some tiny glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

    • @connorantalek9459
      @connorantalek9459 7 лет назад +12

      You two are right. Personally, I've never actually been to EPCOT Center as it was (I was born in the early 2000's, what do you expect?), I have been to Epcot, since I lived just 40 minutes away (now I live 8 days away in Washington) and while I love Test Track (2.0, to be exact), Spaceship Earth, and the two rides at the Land Pavillion, I feel like they should just take everything else away. Revive the Seas. Reach for newer Horizons. Breathe life back into the Wonders of Life pavillion. Update Universe of Energy (although Ellen's humor transcends time). Use their imaginations to make a JoI with the Imagination Institute while also incorporating Dreamfinder.
      Bring back the Maelstrom. Turn Innoventions back into Communicore (or at least add Tom Morrow from Disneyland's Innoventions).
      I heard that once, you could only see Disney characters in the opening ceremonies, and usually that was just Mickey Mouse. Now, you see characters everywhere taking over the rides. I want to make Epcot into EPCOT Center again. A park with a focus on the future.

    • @AroundIndiana
      @AroundIndiana 7 лет назад +5

      Horizons was a great ride, but in order to have kept it open they would've had to do a 100% overhaul of everything in it, otherwise it would have been extremely out of date. It would seem pretty funny seeing the scenes of "the future" as it was envisioned in the early 80's, it just wouldn't make sense. I remember going on it before it closed and even then it seemed very dated.

    • @EM-ec4jo
      @EM-ec4jo 7 лет назад +1

      You're definitely not wrong, but to add to what you've said, the ride building was notably leaky toward the end of the ride's lifespan. The vast majority of the water damage to the ride couldn't be easily seen (though from what I've seen from the Mesa Verde Times blog's pictures of the damage that could be seen from the ride, it seemed to all be in the space areas toward the end of the ride), and it made some cast member/maintenance areas impassable and/or dangerous, so I'm sure that had something to do with its closure as well.
      So sadly, to keep it open as it was would've required them to fix the leaks in the building and completely replace various set pieces/maintenance catwalks. Would've been timely and expensive, especially without a sponsor.

  • @justimagine2403
    @justimagine2403 7 лет назад +6

    Fantastic as always! Better visuals and details. One shot inside the ride that I was always fascinated by was when you pick your ride home, the ride vehicles tilted back and if you looked to the right you saw those weird fins flipping down next to your face so you couldn't see the trip home other people picked. It was like clockwerx magic how it turned into a tiny simulator. So ahead of its time. Can you imagine running an Omnimax projector ALL DAY projecting those visuals?

    Best Epcot rides of '84, Horizons, Journey into Imagination, World of Motion, Spaceship Earth, The Land and Universe of Energy.
    And hands down the best dark rides in the World at that time and maybe even still to this day because of the complete
    heart and soul the Imagineers and everyone involved put into Epcot. And because Roy was there to carry Walt's vision, intent and spirit
    through to the end.

    It makes me sad that I never got to experience this ride in person. After seeing it with my own eyes I can see why so many people loved this attraction and wished it had never been replaced by Mission Space. This attraction blended all the best elements of Future World together and made excellent use of the technology at the time to bring it to life. As I passed by each scene I really fell in love with the characters and the lives they were living in these futures. The science fiction used for these scenes was bold. We often get dark dismal futures in modern fiction, so to see these bright optimist futures is such a chance of pace. I wish we would be brave enough to dream up futures like these once again.

    Martin: THANK YOU VERY MUCH! This was my favorite ride at EPCOT and I rode it every chance I could get. I *SO* wanted to walk the sets. I'd made an appointment with one of the cast members to do so the following week. Alas, a friend needed to be picked up from the airport at that same time. I was sad. However, I've seen videos of a couple of people who did just that; albeit without permission. By this time the ride's attendance had dropped off enough that they could get off the ride and hide in the set without anybody knowing about it. The video was very interesting.
    This does bring up an important point, though. As much as I absolutely *loved* Horizons, it wasn't getting very good attendance in the end. People's tastes had changed and it was probably considered boring by most. Not much point having a pavilion most people won't visit. :-(
    Granted, they're in the same boat with Mission: Space now. I missed Horizons, but did like Mission: Space at first. Sadly, the shiny wore off _really_ fast (could not tell you why). Now the space race game after the ride is a different story...that sucker is stupidly FUN!
    BTW, thank you for getting the narration changes in this. I've always been bugged that histories of this ride doesn't include that fact; especially the "Don't tell our daughter or she'll want to move up here", bit. For some reason, I always remembered the original line.
    {sniff} Thanks again for this. It was wonderful. :->

    I was at work when this uploaded and I had to keep myself from screaming in joy. This ride and Journey Into Imagination (which I'm excited to see in this series!) were my FAVORITES when I went as a kid, once in the early 90s and the last time was in 1998 (I remember Test Track soft opened that year I think? I remember going on it anyway, back then I had no idea they replaced World of Motion with that, found that out years later as an adult). GOD I would give anything to have this come back. Actually, if I ever win the lottery where I get billions of dollars, I want this ride built in the back of my mansion, lol. And I'll make sure everyone gets the chance to ride it, not just me, cause I think everyone who either has or has not been on it deserves the chance to see it in person. It was creative, innovative, educational and so much fun, the very traits that made EPCOT Center what it was. Too bad they lost those traits nowadays. It's a mere shell of the greatness it once was.

    Thank you Andrew for your interest in a photo that was taken by a Disney staff photographer of me building the "barber shop man" mentioned in my last post. You can find the photo at www.flickr.com/photos/mikey1719/33167821958/in/dateposted-public/
    The photo has weathered quite a bit, and hope you can see most of it. I am the guy in the white smock on the right. The guy on the left photo bombed the picture because it was a staff photographer and he just wanted to be in the photograph. We were all machinists and I built the barber shop man from scratch. They gave me a butyrate body and an art director told me what they wanted the figure to do. I built the entire figure except the head (we had a section that only built the heads) skeleton with bearings in the appropriate locations to look natural, built the hands, built linkages for the robotic arms (scissors, comb and brushes) installed the hydraulic actuators to all moving parts (actuators were custom built in the shop), plumbed the actuators and attached the cut pieces of butyrate, all without any blueprints at all. After that it went to wardrobe, paint and programming.

When I went on the Carousel of Progress, I instantly remembered that ride. Thank you for posting this video Martin. I remembered the family but was wondering what happened to all the future shots and now I know it was because it was part of Horizons. I distinctively remembered the robot with all the dishes! So sad that Horizons and Wonders of Life are closed now. Glad I was able to experience these and relive them through RUclips.

    I truly can't believe this ride was destroyed, it's early on par with if not more impressive and classic than pirates.

    We're going back to WDW for the first time in 11 years, and while I'm very excited, it would be that much greater if I knew I had this to look forward to. Disney needs to understand how to balance the need to update with our need to feel nostalgia! I'm not sure if Walt himself understood that. They're too close to the trees, but we are not. We see the whole forest, and loved it from the first time we stepped in, and we want to experience it again and again and again. It never gets old. Thanks Martin, you've given us back a part of the nostalgia!!

    Thank you Martin ... I always love these videos on my favorite "vintage Epcot" rides (or at least the way they were back then in the early 90's .... also love seeing the different facts about the rides that I'd never know about.

    I have to thank you again, as Horizons is very near and dear to me. The detail and information you brought to this experience is much more than expected! You always do great and in-depth work, but this one feels like it was for me.

    For all of the losses of the Classic EPCOT Center rides and pavilions, this one probably stings the most for me. I remember riding it at the beginning as a teen, and through the years. There was just something wonderful and fascinating about it. I miss it a lot. However, sometimes I think that it being demolished and replaced may have been better than the alternative. By that, I mean, if they had gutted all the wonders and put some cheesy overlay on it, that would be rough. As it is now, Horizons will live on in our memories pristine and untouched by things similar to Ellen's Energy Adventure and Journey into your Imagination.

    I think that your videos are the best at taking the history and creation of Disney attractions and condensing them into well edited videos! But have you ever considered using a voice narration? For me I think that I would remember the information easier and would have more attention on the images and videos!

    This ride closed a few months after I was born so I never got to ride it. But man I wish I could have, the ride looked so epic and imaginative. If I could ride rides I never got to experience, this would be at the top. There seems to be a renewed interest in the ride, so maybe Disney will reopen a new version in the future.

    What an awesome video! :D I think I remember riding this as a kid in. the 90s somewhere before it closed in 1999. I thought the ride was really cool. Oh man I miss rides like this with an amazing concept. I hope whatever changes are coming to Epcot will be good changes to keep what Epcot is and hopefully new concepts to be something similar of Walts Epcot.

    It's sad how much Epcot has replaced. EPCOT Center. Never been to WDW and it's not a priority as I think the WDW I want to see is in the 70s and 80s. Looking back, how good have things really been since the Disney Decade began? Maelstrom, Horizons, World Of Motion and Wonders Of Life are all casualties of the past 20 years or so while existing attractions(for the time being in some cases) like Imagination and Universe Of Energy have changes that brought downgrades in the eyes of many. It doesn't seem like WDW does the cool opening ceremonies they used to, like when Lucie Armaz rode Space Mountain with Lyle Waggoner and Tommy Tune. Even the Kids Of the Kingdom showed up for the splashy Horizons opening. And what on earth is with Spaceship Earth being surrounded by a graveyard and twin dead malls? At leadt living in AZ means I can get my Disney fix for less and quicker with Disneyland in the state next door.
