The Harley-Davidson WLA Liberator motorcycle is the version developed exclusively for use by the North American military. They were mainly used as advance messengers in rough and contested terrain.
Due to their versatility in difficult terrain, they were used several times as forward observers.
When the reconnaissance assignment was incorporated, a sidecar and a radio pack were attached, and a second man was assigned to form a recon team.
Some duties assigned to this recon team consisted of:
Driving Intel through contested terrain, advanced terrain reconnaissance, detecting troop movement and enemy supply lines, aiming artillery fire and other things.
The second man in the group could have several responsibilities and carry different weapons according to his mission/role, which could be submachine guns, rifles, sniper rifles or automatic rifles.
