  • GoPros are popular for capturing ski sequences. The camera mount position and the digital lens setting will change the perspective and overall effect. I do a comparison of a handheld pan shot using the linear, wide, superview, and hyperview digital lenses. Next I ski for a few turns using the superview and hyperview setting with the camera mounted on the belt strap of my pack, and finally a superview setting with the camera mounted at my shoulder level.

Very interesting to see the four different views in one frame! Nice work.

I mostly use a chest mount with Superview for skiing if I recall. I also have a 90 deg bracket so I can mount it vertically. The GoPro 11 will do square format as well but I have not played around with it. Thanks for the comparison Tom!

Glad you enjoyed it. I've been watching the boomer snow year you are having in SC AK. Hope you are having a blast. Thanks for tuning in and for being a subscriber.

Fascinated by different terrain in different regions. In New England, a wide open space like that is associated with a farm or other human clearing. Backcountry skiing typically involves dodging trees with the occasional treehug. Lots of jokes about not wanting to be a treehugger.

The area I'm skiing in this video is around 7000 feet in elevation, with the nearby hills topping out at 8200 feet (2134 m - 2500 m). It is all National Forest and the open areas are natural, not the result of logging or agriculture. The forested areas are interspersed with open sagebrush areas depending on the soil type and aspect. North facing slopes are heavily treed and South facing slopes are generally void of large trees. The slopes I'm skiing in this video are all Western aspects. We typically get lots of snow in the winter, enough to cover the sagebrush and the end result is some amazing terrain that looks like it was designed for XCD skiing. Thanks for tuning in and by all means, only hug trees in affection. :)

Hi Tom, this was a great little review on your camera work, thank you! Typically, I don’t fancy the uber wide angles, especially in architectural scenes, but yours seem ok in the open wilderness. That is to say, they look good on the downhill scenes. The belly button view are good way to illustrate that your not flying a drone as they keep your skis in the view. I wonder, could you extend your Insta-pole to go over your head in front of you, rather than a follow me view?

I have tried a few shots with the camera in front, but for some reason, it is not a very flattering view for me. I may experiement with that angle today as I'd like to release a short skiing my SBound 98's on Tuesday. One of my goals this winter is to publish a short of me skiing each ski in my quiver. I've released 4 this season (Discovery 80, Traverse 78, RCS Skate, V6) and I have three to go (Sbound 98, Objective and Hypervector)

@@tomm9850 Hmm, you may be right. If you do use the clip in that position, please call attention to it in your narration. All the best! Eric

Hi Tom, Great video! I don't understand why the 360 degree camera boom is not visible in the video.

Hi David, good to hear from you. The camera's software stitches the two images from each lens into one frame and removes the pole from the scene. It is not perfect as you can often see the stitch line where the two images meet. There is a small black circle on the image that lines up with the pole, but in this instance, my pack is black, so it is hard to notice the missing piece. It is an amazing camera for action shots but it will drive an OCD photographer nuts!

@tomm9850 Hey Tom, That is very interesting. I guess I didn't understand what a 360 degree camera is. That's a very interesting technology. Best wishes...

Hello. Tell me, how much did your set of skis + bindings + boots cost?

    • @tomm9850

The gear in this video has gone up in price since I purchased them, but the current retail price (2/10/2023): Voile Objective BC skis, $900, Rottefella Xplore Binding, $250, Alfa Vista Boots, $538, all in US dollars. It is a very expensive setup and there are more affordable options for XCD skiing. I purchased my skis on sale in 2019, the bindings in 2021 and the boots in 2022. The total cost was around $1200 USD.
