  • The Sinn 104 St Sa I is a great little mechanical timepiece, reviewed here on the H-Link Sinn Bracelet. It's got Day and Date complications, and a deeply legible face. It's also a beautiful object, with a great case and bracelet, and with fit-and-finish in line with watches twice the price. So, it's clearly a gem.
    Unfortunately, it's also pretty pricy, and you get the reduced accuracy and increased fragility of a mechanical movement. So, although it's a gem of a mechanical watch, unless you're in love with spinning wheels and rotors and gears, this may not be the best functional timepiece for you.

    Love the review. I will say, only losing 200 bucks on a mid-tier brand is something I'd consider solid. Few watches in this tier, Seiko included, can say they only lose 200 bucks. Look at the resale on Tuna's, Oris watches, Nomos, etc. That's above average value retention

    I feel your pain, Nick. I wore a Seiko Quartz Sport 150 for 30 YEARS, and it still keeps perfect time. I highly value accuracy, and am looking for a long-term replacement. In the interim, I am wearing an Invicta Pro Diver mechanical, with the see-through case back. It loses about 30 seconds per day, which I hate. But its titanium, which I love. I am considering the Sinn 104 because I expect it to last a long time, one I can give to my son. I do not think a quartz watch has the same inherent magic that a good mechanical watch has. There truly is something good to be said for a reliable mechanical movement. Its the design, the geometry, the engineering and the gears that make a mechanical watch so desirable. It will never need a battery, and it will always be beautiful. Well, maybe it will always be beautiful. I cannot see myself spending more than a couple hundred bucks for a quartz watch (although I did spend nearly $500 for that Seiko 30 years ago). But I sure understand what you mean concerning the inaccuracy of mechanical watches. Your 104 is great. If you want to sell it, let me know.

    A fair review, Nick. As a long time vintage watch lover/collector I want to add one point.The watch as tool is different than the watch as mechanical marvel/industrial art. The reason absolute accuracy is not a problem over a long term is that most mechanical guys set the watch each time putting on. But it's not a chore. Handling the watch is part of the tactile enjoyment of playing with a fine watch. Yes, it tells time pretty well but the look and feel of the timepiece is just as important.

    The movements in all Sinn and Stowa watches are normally adjusted to chronometer standards, might be worth a mention. Big plus for the accuracy and calibre aside from the smooth wind and hacking seconds.

    I think you may be slightly unlucky in the accuracy lotto on that Sinn. My 104 runs +0.8 seconds per day which is not atypical. I know there are no guarantees though, and obviously that's your point. I would not expect a watch at this price point to be COSC certified (or it's German equivalent), but we are talking about one of Sinn's entry level pieces. I would say that the 104 is amazing value in terms of a mechanical tool watch.

    I say that watches serve no real purpose other than looking good showing of your style and what you have worked for. if looked after correctly it could be something you pass onto your loved ones anytime keeping function or practical use is secondary in a world where everyone has a smartphone.

You don't have to pull it out of your pocket. I t may seem dumb, but at work if I want to know the time I don't look like I am playing on my phone. I glance at the wrist is almost unnoticeable.

  • @khronokraze
    @khronokraze 7 лет назад +2

    Great review. You made a lot of good valid points.
    I was heavily considering the Sinn 104 with white dial. Although I like it a lot and it pops to mind as the potential for one of my next watches I'd like to get, I'm always hesitant and find better value watches I'd rather spend as much, usually less, than what a Sinn costs. The accuracy, as you say, is okay. And, the lume is nowhere near what a Seiko or a lot of other brands can produce. And, although the design is nice and clean, I'll admit I sometimes find it maybe just a little too much where it sometimes appears a bit plain. IDK, I can go off more on this, but bottom line is it's a nice watch, just not sure if I want to spend the money on one just yet as I find a lot of other better options.
    I'd address the value proposition associated between a quartz and mechanical watch you addressed at the end.
    It's very true, if you want dead on accuracy, you should really go quartz if you're not in love with the romantic notion of sporting an authentic mechanical timepiece. Funny how the market and view on quartz versus mechanical is... you pay more for less accurate watch, and less for the more accurate one.. Yes, I get the mechanical watches have a certain level of engineering and craftsmanship that go into it and all special tooling and manual labor that goes into perfecting is a lot of where the higher costs are derived from.. but still, at the end of the day, it still doesn't quite hold up to a quartz movement which just gets the job done.
    That being said, I appreciate both and welcome both in my own watch collection where appropriate.
    I feel that generally for $100's, if not $1000's less, mechanically speaking, you can get just as good a mechanical timepiece that's as accurate, if not maybe even a little more accurate, than your luxury high-end timepieces. Seiko and a lot of microbrands and homage makers actually do a fantastic job to make affordable high-performing watches which are nothing to poke fun at and to be taken very seriously.
    I feel to meld the best of both worlds, Seiko has done right with their Spring Drive movement. You really have the benefits of both mechanical and quartz components that when combined is about as accurate as any quartz.. maybe just a tiny bit less accurate due to the mechanical aspects, but way above any fully mechanical watch, I believe.
    It's too bad in a lot of people eyes, Seiko doesn't demand the respect it well deserves and they gawk at the notion of spending X amount of $$ on a Seiko Spring Drive, yet they wouldn't hesitate to spend as much, if not often more, on some luxury Swiss branded watch that probably doesn't perform nearly as well in accuracy as the Spring Drive, and in some cases maybe even the finishing isn't quite as nice as a Grand Seiko, either.

    • @69fastfurious
      @69fastfurious Год назад

      Agree with you you man , but do you want to spend more than 3 x the price of an Sinn ? I guess not plus for the amount of a spring drive ( my opinion one of the best options) the newer Sinn models are much more accurate than this review by Nick , I know this is a 5 years old review but I bought some much more expensive Swiss made brand cosc certified and all them are much better accurate than this 104 ( I’ve got one and it’s spot on ) like some Seikos sometimes you have one that’s not well regulated or the bezel it’s not well aligned for this prices better buy a Casio 5600 5 band for around 200 bucks anyway it’s a matter of taste

      Correctamundo! Hans-Werner Sinn is an economist with a funny beard.
      Helmut Sinn, OTOH, was a WW-II Luftwaffe pilot who later founded the Sinn watch company in 1961 (sold to the current owner in 1994). Guess the names could get confused.
      Prices for Sinn watches unfortunately have increased way beyond inflationary adjustment since then, IMO (I'm no Hans-Werner). I have one of the original 103 Ti Ar models from '95 or so. The earlier direct-marketing model (had to drive to Frankfurt to the factory to buy the watch) made them a "bargain" back then... well, haven't kept close track to how they do things these days, so all this might not be 100% correct.

    The name "Sinn" on the dial refers to Helmut Sinn (1916--2018), a former Luftwaffe pilot, and after WWII aviation expert and entrepreneur. In 1961 he founded a watch company under his name in Frankfurt am Main and specialized in wristwatches and chronographs. He sold the company Helmut "Sinn Spezialuhren" in 1994 and acquired the Swiss company "Guinand" in 1995. The 104 by "SInn" recalls his style and taste, as do some "Guinand" watches up to this day. I have the 104 you are reviewing here, and I love it. His motto: "I wanted to make the best watches, aviation or sport, the best available, at the most affordable price. So I always swore that no one would earn even a single mark as a freeloader." (Source: ruclips.net/video/FbVaveTPCpU/видео.html )

    Damn. I must have been pretty lucky. I picked up a victorinox infantry chrono for $500 with the eta 7750; The worst I've seen was +11s (notably after a very active day; lots of wrist movement) and -3s (after leaving the chrono running and the watch resting crown up for ~12 hours. Initially, ~+4s a day was common and consistent. Since then, I've been regulating it by not manually winding it, resting it in a position that slows it down when I sleep, and letting the chrono run to match my second hand. By the end of last month it was 3 seconds fast. Currently its 5s fast, and I set my time based on the atomic clock on the 1st. Not too bad I'd say. I'd rather it run fast than slow, anyway. As long as it stays within the minute, it suits my purposes. No doubt the quartz is more practical and efficient. From a hobbyist perspective and as someone who marvels at feats of engineering, I get more enjoyment out of the mechanical/autos.

    Excellent review. Have to say I think the level of accuracy you're talking about is a bit silly, though. Nth degree accuracy is not a reason anybody should buy a wristwatch, even a quartz, because the computer you're staring at and the phone you're already carrying everywhere are FAR more accurate timekeepers than any quartz watch (short of those that sync with atomic time). Functionally, any wristwatch is for quick, at-a-glance, close-enough timetelling without having to drag out your phone, and that's all. Beyond that, it's a style item. Aside from that, it's a great review, as are all your reviews that I've seen.

The most trustworthy watch i had always died after 3 years without any warning. I just hate that, and with some watches the battery lasts only a year.
    I know that today most quarzwatches (not the really cheap ones but anything properly build) has some kind of low bat indication, but my mechanic may get slow or stop when not worn or wound, but as long as its on my wrist it works when i need it to. And it does that for over 5 years now.

      @@jipke I have no experience with them personally. And correct me if i am wrong: i think there are 2 types: the one that needs light to function and the one where you charge a battery by movment. I only read the specifications of the Casio solar watches, and it would not get enough light on my wrist to work. So if the citizen ones aren't way more efficient (which i doubt as moving the hands needs more energy than a LCD) this would not work for me. Those with the movement charge: would work, but: I remember a collegue of mine having a Seiko eco drive that needed a new "battery" after 6-7 years. (every chargable battery has a maximum number of possible charging cycles.) I don't remember if it suddenly stopped or if there was a warning, but anyway apart from the quartz accuracy it hasn't got that many advantages over the mechanical i use.

    • @jipke
      @jipke 4 года назад +1

      @@nirfz I can only tell you what I know from first-hand experience. Some years ago, I was doing a lot of outdoor work (biologist) so I needed a rugged time piece that would be reliable, able to withstand the outdoors and, importantly, did not require opening the case back every few years to replace the battery (I wasn't into watches then, so mechanical watches weren't on my radar at all). So I purchased this Citizen BM8180-03E. Man, was this thing rugged and reliable! I've swum in it, it took beatings and I wore it non-stop for 4 years. I was paying no mind whatsoever to the movement because it just kept on going (solar), even during the dark winter months hidden under the cuff. It needs but a smidgen of light (sun or artificial) every now and then to keep it running. I'm sure the capacitator will lose some of its charging capacities over the years, but I have had not problems whatsoever until now.
      At the moment, tough, it's sitting on a shelf because these RUclips channels annoyingly got me hooked to automatic time pieces (also since I recently became a father and I was thinking of an heirloom piece for my son) and I purchased my first automatic (the Hamilton Khaki Field) as the ultimate field watch replacement for my Citizen field watch.
      Long way of saying that you can hardly go wrong with an Eco-Drive from Citizen; fantastic build quality for the price and they just keep on ticking with the accuracy that we're used to from quartz movements.

    I hear a lot of complaints from Sinn 104 owners about the day/date feature not lining up, which is a shame because Seiko can get that right on $200 watches.

    I'd be super happy with any mechanical watch being 3-5 seconds off per day. Maybe not for a super expensive Rolex or Omega, but a 1500€ watch using a Sellita movement, that's more than good enough in my book. I'm kind of a freak and set it ever 2-3 days anyway. And "Your basic Quartz" will in many cases also be better than a much more expensive Rolex, by the way, I really don't understand that argument, everyone knows that Quartz tends to be cheaper and more accurate. Some valid points, but overall, kind of weird review, since most of the criticism will apply to literally every other mechanical watch, except for maybe the spring drive (Grand) Seiko models.

      Sadly, I agree! So much if the high end watch industry is focused on Mechanicals that good Quartz is hard to find. Even the Grand Seiko Quartz lacks high end features like perpetual calendars or quick-adjust hours, and Omega Quartz is a joke. I'm hoping that that starts to change. Even some of the Swatch group is releasing decent Quartz lately (Certina). Still, really valid point!

    Hey Nick,
    Great work and fantastic review. I've subscribed. I've got a question; is it worth the extra dough to pick up an Omega Seamaster? I'm stuck between this Sinn and a Black SMPc.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  6 лет назад +1

      You'll get a much better and more accurate movement in the Omega, but it's a *lot* more money. You can often pick up a Quartz SMP for around the same amount of cash as this guy, which might offer a nice improvement? But for what it's worth, I'm wearing an Omega Planet Ocean these days, so I do like Omega's movements.

    BTW: For all the people who simply have to have a sweeping second hand, it is readily available in quartz. It is called the Bulova Precisionist Series Watch which oscillates around 56,700 beats per hour....twice as much as the Grand Seiko...and is accurate to 10 seconds a year. Too bad the physics of quartz holds no fascination to those who never had an appreciation for the atom.

    My goodness, why must you keep knocking mechanical watches for not being quartz? Did you pay $1500 for it and then are surprised that its not as accurate as a quartz? It's like reviewing an album on vinyl and then complaining that it's not an MP3.

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  7 лет назад +10

      +Trev Barlow Realize that many folks just getting into watches don't understand that a $5 Dora the explorer watch is going to best your average Rolex in accuracy. Also, that comparison isn't fair! I'd be comparing Vinyl to a lossless digital track and complaining that the fidelity is way lower on vinyl. :)

    • @trevbarlow9719
      @trevbarlow9719 7 лет назад

      Fair enough. And I do agree with you that it's a shame that the luxury brands don't have more quartz offerings. Have you considered focusing only and/or mainly on quartz in your reviews? Personally, I find a huge amount of info on what separates a high-end mech movement from a lower-quality one, but very little such info about quartz moments. Incidentally, I'm trying to get into quartz.

    • @NickShabazz

    Nice and thorough review! I totally understand your concern about the inaccuracy of mechanical watches even though I can't really agree with it. A minute in two weeks surely can't be that bad? And I'm not _that_ huge on mechanical watches but I still appreciate the way they operate without electricity.
    I remember you had a thread on WUS a few months back where you were thinking about getting a 556i. What made you go for the 104i instead? I'm curious because I've also been debating about whether I should get a 556i or 104i. Currently I'm gravitating towards the 556i because of its smaller case size (I have a 6 inch wrist).

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  8 лет назад +1

      +jwso It's not *that* bad, but it's another thing to think about. "What time is it?" is much less satisfying, internally, when the answer is "more or less 4:56, assuming I'm not magnetized and given that I last reset my watch a month ago, it's probably closer to 4:58". It's just not worth the extra mental hassle, given that there's not anything else terribly practical to be gained from a mechanical over a solar quartz. A wristwatch should be reliable and "boring", and mechs don't seem to have that.
      And, good memory, I went 104 because I liked the idea of Day/Date, and because I liked the idea of rotating bezel. It just barely won. But the 556 is still a great watch. I dream that they'll put the HAQ movement from the UX in an 856 or 556 case someday.

    Few of us are honest, or even fully conscious, about our discretionary consumer choices (and yes, I include myself among "us"). For example, few people will tell you that they selected a new car because it accurately projects or complements their self-image (though they will rationalize the crap out of the car's objective specifications). ----- Such is the case with watches. Look at a person's watch and you will understand how they wish to be viewed, at least in the particular instance of wearing that particular watch. ----- That said, there are other reasons for choosing one type over another. My conventional quartz watches lost their water resistance (such as it was) with the first battery and gasket change. Suck! And I have yet to find a quartz chronograph that measures durations greater than 60 minutes (most, not even). BUT if I could find an elegant, solar quartz chronograph that measures up to 6 or more hours, I would probably buy it!

I came to the conclusion that because she works at a desk all day that she is never moving her hands, so her watch is not auto-winding. I, on the other hand am busy moving around all day so my watch stays wound.
