  • In this video I'm fixing a badly overheating backwards compatible Japanese CECHA00 Playstation 3.
This console is shutting down with a blinking red light after 20-30 seconds and won't power back up until it has cooled down. This fault is caused by overheating Cell and RSX processors and the fix is to delid (ie. replace thermal compound under the IHS plates).
I'm demonstrating an easy way of delding the PS3 and replacing the thermal paste. This procedure will also help prolong PS3 life as overheating may lead to unrecoverable damage to PS3 processors.

This was a very methodical way of removing the lids. I like it enough to give it a try myself. Thank you.

A razor is a BAD idea for deliding. I have used a tool as thin as a razor for deliding mine (made out of stainless steel so it won't break easily). I make sure to sand the edges before using it to avoid scratching or destroying any of the GPU/CPU board traces.

Works for me. I'd say general advice applies - don't try it on a working console the first time. You will most likely break it - regardless of the tool used. Once you know you tool and the device you're working with then (almost) any tool will work. For me razor is almost perfect.

Personally I've had best success with a painter's knife set, very thin painting tools that aren't sharp at all.

The best tool is always one that does the job and feels comfortable. To me this is the way - I've control over the process and it gives good results. The only thing is that "holder" which isn't great in the video. I misplaced my usual one and and had to use rather crappy one. I've ordered a lot better now and will do another video in next few weeks just to show it's a lot easier with the right tools...

      Hi:
Yes, it will help your PLAYSTATION 3. This work is extremely “sensitive”. It is better if someone experienced do the job. By the moment, you can change the thermal paste.
      Red 5.
