馬頭琴是蒙古族常用的一種弓弦樂器，其與朝爾琴共同的祖先馬尾胡琴為唐宋弓弦胡琴的一種。馬頭琴流行於內蒙古、遼寧、吉林、黑龍江、甘肅、新疆等地的蒙古族中。馬頭琴從唐、宋時期的胡琴發展而成，成吉思汗時已流傳民間。馬頭琴用硬木製作，音箱有倒梯形、長方形等多種。大者琴長120(cm) 厘米，小者琴長70(cm) 厘米。音箱兩面蒙繪有圖案的馬皮或羊皮。琴弦的特別之處是由多根馬尾分為兩束而成琴弦，按四度關係定弦，以馬尾弓納兩弦間拉奏；發音圓潤，低回婉轉，音量較弱，可奏雙音和泛音；使得音色與其他弓弦樂器會有較大差異。弓在弦外拉動。
