Catch Hundreds of House Flies In Days With A Homemade Trap

  • Easy to make traps catch hundreds of flies in a matter of days. Make your own traps in a few minutes using a jar or plastic bottle, a piece of black plastic, a piece of string and bait, such as raw fish or mince in water.
    Flies are positively phototropic, which means they are attracted to the light. We can use their predisposition as a weapon against them when we make the traps.

    I made a similar trap and it works lovely! I used a mason jar. I took the center round part from the lid and just used the ring. Instead of plastic I had some scrap mesh screen laying around so I cut a piece large enough to cover and still screw on the metal ring. I poked holes about the same size as yours. Mine are loaded with apple cider vinegar, sugar and a little bit of soap (breaks water tension so they could drown if they touch it). Thank you for sharing the tarp tip over the top for shadowing it really makes a difference!

    Top notch advice. Fly traps do not have to be very sophisticated to work. I have used these types of traps for years and they work very well. I place them all about the property in the shade and tend them regularly. I must add, the deceased flies make excellent fertilizer. I bury a wad of them at the base of my fruit trees every time a bottle fills up. My house, fortunately, is fly free all summer.

      +JOJO - 420 Indoor fly problem...here is a nice little trick. It requires a 20 oz palstic drink cup, a sticky trap (I use scorpion traps, they are the most sticky) and some fish based cat food. Do not bother with the little fly traps that come in the tube...they are useless!
      Take about 1/2 tea spoon full of the cat food and put it in the bottom of the cup, add about two tablespoons of water...not enough to cover the cat food but enough to keep it moist...now, gently bend the scorpion trap - Careful! You might get stuck...hold it by the edges! Place the folded trap into the mouth of the cup so it resembles an upside down letter "U"...make sure the sticky side is out and well above the rim of the cup..don't place it near window curtains that might get stcuk, on it...and don't do this near pets...they will get stuck 'cause they like cat food, too!!!. Now, place this cup near a light source, like your window. At first it will give off a smell you might notice, but that will go away in a few minutes. Don't let the food dry out...add a little water every day.
      The strategy is this...the flies love fish smell...they can detect it a thousand times better than humans. They will, of course,go to the source. But, flies are careful, they like to scout their food source first, so they land on something near by...in this case, the perch that is best is right over the food...Bam! Fly lands on the sticky trap and it's over for him/her!...next thing you know, all the fles are stuck...no more flies bothering you> When the food dries up, refill, add a little bait a little water and keep going ...if the sticky trap gets dusty or full of flies, simply toss it and put in a new one. Game over, Baby!

    • @jimbass7867
      @jimbass7867 9 лет назад +4

      +JOJO - 420 If you sue my outdoor fly traps, you will pretty much have a more pleasant summer. The idea si, give the flies a much more interesting food source than that which they might find inside your home.
      There is a down side to my traps...after the flies get trapped in them, they begin to rot and the smell can be quite...well, down right disgusting within about ten feet of the traps. But, flies go nuts over it and they will come to that source first above all others rather than your front or back door. But, do not expect to serve drinks and sandwiches within ten feet of these things....Yuk! Ick!

    What's more likely is you're now breeding flies. You're creating a perfect environment for them to live and thrive (which is what draws them there anyway). Once they get in there, they start to multiply. So while I'm sure you're catching plenty of flies, you're also breeding them like crazy. These types of traps should really be refreshed every couple of days.

  • @CoconutsHD
    @CoconutsHD 7 лет назад +21

    so will this attract more flies to come and see what all the hubub is about and just turn to a never ending battle, or does it actually decrease the number of flies in the area? Thanks, Mike

    • @AnnaSeib
      @AnnaSeib 5 лет назад +14

      CoconutsHD should reduce the numbers of flies in the area because it’ll only attract those close enough to sense it, and the ones trapped then can’t breed. Plus decreasing by just one fly earlier in the season will decrease many flies over time!

    Problem with this is if they aren't disposed of in a timely manner the live ones may start laying eggs on the deceased ones, after which you'll start having maggots and new flies to deal with.
    But this downside has to do with all fly catchers of this type not just home made ones. So after the trap gets full of flies to a certain degree its best to kill/dispose of them and start the trap over.

      The traps with meat definitely carry an odor of rotten meat so they cannot be placed on ones deck or house. These you’d place literally out near corrals, chicken house-away from people. ACV isn’t so bad though in house or on decks. With all that said-meat is the best attractor, and works the fastest. Agree that they should be changed frequently, if no other reason for the grossness alone.

After everyone had eaten, I showed up for some dinner. I went to fry myself some fresh shells and noticed tiny metallic green and blue floaties in the oil.
      Upon further inspection, it turned out that there were about 30 flies that had come to the surface of the oil after the oil had cooled. Lucky me. I didn't partake in the feast. =)

I would place a fish net over their eyes scoop up the flies then turn the bottle upside down between my knees and as they headed for the sunlight I would put the cork in the bottle. The flies were then used to feed rescued frogs and injured lizards :)

    That sunshade feature was excellent advice. Your trap was amazing !
    One idea I had for an insect trap was a tube with a small fan at the entrance and some screen wire at the exit. The fan sucks the insects into the tube and blows them to the other end where the screen wire lets the air pass and keeps the insects in. The insects drop into a tray at the bottom of the exit area after they have used up their stores of energy.

    I just hope you are not about to express mail these flies to someone. I could not finish watching this so I don't have to know your intentions afterwards. Life is truly amazing the longer you live the more that you will see. And I hope to live a little longer to just able to categorize this one.

    I believe "Phototropism" is actually about organisms that grow from light stimulus. Most commonly plants. It can also be used for insects if they are attracted to it like the flying insects to a night light though. So that's probably what you are talking about.
    But as far as you covering the holes at the top of course that's effective since then it's just black color even after the hole so they can't differentiate it that well. After all vision is merely just light traveling into a creatures eye. So you stopped if being able to see the hole from the inside basically by limiting the light. They basically can't see the hole they came in. But if you made the top lid another color they would differentiate it then and slowly be able to escape.

      ziongite Google: 'Phototropism flies'. I learned about house flies being attracted to light and referred to as "phototropic" at Auckland University, when I studied Zoology as part of my M.Sc. (Hons).

Some of our flies were affected by Chemtrails which caused them to grow to a huge size. Luckily you can hear them coming because their wings sound like a chainsaw.

    Flys play a really important role in the animal kingdom. Without them animals would not decompose after death

    • @EngJPMB
      @EngJPMB 8 лет назад

      +Tvtimeshistory That's incorrect. Although some invertebrates have an important role when it comes to "decomposition" of organic matter, they're not decomposers in the technical sense. Bacteria and fungi, on the other hand, are the main groups of decomposers.

    • @WebOfEvidence
      @WebOfEvidence 10 лет назад +3

      Not only are these flies a nuisance, but they can also carry disease-causing organisms. Too many flies are not only an irritant to farm workers but, when there are nearby human habitations, a public health problem could occur. Read more: entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/urban/flies/house_fly.HTM

    I'm doing research and I have put together a blue print for a device to kill flies (It's for home-use though)
    It has a flame thrower on one end (ejects about 3-4 feet) in a 30 degree horizontal/vertical at the nozzle exit.
    The other side a tiny suction device (small hoover if you will) to hoover up the wingless fly off the floor. The flame thrower just burns their wings off so they drop out the sky. Wings are incredibly fragile, even getting nowhere near them sometimes the heat melts the wing.
    What do you think? I think people who hate flies as much as me will buy it, I also think people will buy it as a 'fun' Xmas present too.

    Search: "chicken feeder fly bucket" without quotes, to see how you can turn a plague of flies, into food for chickens.
    .
    I saw a video of a person with chickens, and they hung a bucket with meat (or something dead) in it, above a surface with no grass or anything, such as a concrete patio. He drilled holes in the side, so that as the larvae mature and want to pupate, they will crawl up the sides and out of the holes and fall onto the concrete, where the chickens easily see them and eat them. He warns it will smell awful, so hang it up high. I can't find the exact video, but there are lots of people now who have done the same thing. The only reason to watch the videos after reading this, is to find a design you like, by eliminating the problems some people may be having that they didn't notice.
    .
    I'm sure you could combine a fly-trap with a larvae chicken feeder, to keep most of the flies from escaping, while having most of the escaped larvae be eaten by chickens (and whatever else finds them). Maybe you could design a ground under it, so that the larvae can not escape, and any larvae that pupate, could be physically eliminated or dehydrated with a DIY box made to use the intense heat from sunlight for a dry food for later. Just be sure to store dried food in with something that actively removes humidity, like a Damp Rid container and have it in a sealed container, that way if there is still 0.1% moisture/humidity, it will be removed so that they don't rot and mold. When storing food you dry, it must maintain 0.00000000...% moisture.
