  • How do you keep your design in the same spot on the mat when you go to cut it? In this lesson I demonstrate how you can cut your items where you lay them out in Design Space. We will use a simple technique giving design space a reference point.

It is genuinely insane that there isn't a 1-1 relationship between Designspace and the mat, especially when you're doing print and cut and don't want to waste half your A4 paper with the Cricut solution.

Thank you for answering such a simple question! I searched thru at least a half dozen videos before you quickly and efficiently provided the hack needed! Why we need a hack, I don't know!

As much as I appreciate this video, we shouldn't have to need it... This should be able to be done without having to trick the software/machine into it. I mean, it's bad enough we have to be online to use the software, there is a poor zoom feature, destructive editing, cancelled cuts, a smaller than expected cut size, costly replacement parts... the list goes on. The machine itself works amazingly well but the software is awful, especially considering how much most of us have paid and continue to pay in membership fees and so on....

I hear you - I don't program the software - I would suggest you copy and paste the statement above in the "Feedback" section of Design Space Software on the bottom left. I don't think cricut folks read this youtube channel.

Henry Jones, there is so many "free" fonts and and SVG files everywhere on the computer that nobody has to sign up for the monthly Design Space fees. You can move the free SVG Files into Design Space. Look it up on RUclips. Jennifer Maker has great RUclipss on here!! There are others also.

I am new to Cricut and was excited to use it for my crafting but was so disappointed that there is little to no instruction on how to use the machine unless you make projects that they design. I am so grateful for this video as I am trying to make 'Welcome World' ornaments for my new grandson and needed a perfect circle which with the steadiest of hands and the best will in the world is not possible to cut free hand. Thank you so very much.

I think you solved my problem! I'm trying to cut out a design on a premade card. I wanted to be able to cut twice because it was kind of intricate, but I couldn't find any way to keep the design in place. I was worried about that little anchor point thinking it would cut a small hole in my card.
But, I realized I could switch it to pen, and then not insert the pen! I love RUclips!! Thank you so much. ❤

Thank you so much for this video.
This is the MOST frustrating aspect of this very expensive machine. This hack should not been needed. Also the Misrepresentation of the platen / mat size is just unethical. The true cut space is 11.5" by 11.5" not 12" by 12". It would not be as bad if this was something that Cricut was upfront about and perhaps produced mats that had the additional margin markings to align things along the edges. I love this little machine but will not buy any new versions of it until these basic issues are resolved. I am willing to switch to other cutting tools instead.
Thank you for putting together a solid explanation of the issue and providing a hack resolution.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! For the life of me, I don't understand why they set up this paper-saver option as the default for cutting. It should default to cut EXACTLY like you have the cuts placed on the mat, and let people select paper-saver as an option! Spent WAY too much time on this and really miss my original Cricut where I could just pick my shape, move my blade, and cut away...happily...without frustration.

  • @dfhowes

There is a vocalist that I absolutely adore (Morgan James). I have all her CDs, all autographed. I want to display each CD jewel case art with the CD next to it. So I bought some 12" x 6½" frames and some matting. All I need to do is cut a square and a circle to be nicely spaced and centered in the frame. Simple enough project, right? Nope. I'm smart enough to not just go right to cutting mat, so I just used ordinary sheet paper to experiment with. I went through 8 sheets before I came to the conclusion that this technique wasn't going to work. So I did a quick search, found this video first thing and I believe it just might be the solution I'm looking for. Thanks.
UPDATE: For my project, I can't have that "reference point" square at the upper left cut an actual hole for aesthetic reasons. Here's what I figured out to prevent it.
I have a Cricut Explore Air 2 which has two blade housings, one marked A on the left one and B on the right one. B is where you normally have the blade and A is used to hold a pen.
In Design Space, at the Operation option (top left) change that square (the reference point) from a Basic Cut to Pen. Then just don't put a pen in housing marked A. Cricut doesn't know there's no pen installed and will go to that location, "draw" nothing and then go about the cutting like normal.

Thanks for the info. Reference point makes sense. I am scrapbooking a 12x12 page, wanting to place a vellum paper over entire page with a scalloped frame cut out of the center of my 12x12 vellum. Technically I want to cut a "scalloped frame" out of the center of a 12x12 paper. In DS I used a 12x12 square to get my framed centered, left the frame in place, removed the 12x12 square; then did your reference point technique. However when it cut, my frame was over .50 inch.
I assume I placed the first 12x12 square incorrectly.. OR....better...
How you go about doing this and keep the "frame" centered in the mat when cutting? Plus I do not want the itty bitty object cut out of top left corner of my 12x12 vellum paper.
