Great explanation, Jim! We actually went through almost the identical thought process and your logic is eerily similar to ours! I didn't quite make it before 40, but right there with you. We're in Saint David, AZ, and are on a very similar path. Looking forward to seeing your progression. Maybe we can compare notes sometime. Good luck!
MidlifePrices well, you know what they say about great minds.😉 We'll absolutely have to compare notes. We've got to keep building up a like-minded community.
and look at all of us now, all of us with the same goal more or less, and different ways of getting there. I feel like we were all sent on this journey at the same time in roughly the same area for a reason. It's been great getting to know you all.
Hi Jim and Jessica! I'm watching this 3 years after you posted it. I've been watching you since you built the bedroom part of your house. I look forward to seeing your videos you too are wonderful hard-working people. It's very interesting to see what you're doing out there my husband and I have owned land in Cochise county for 40 years and always thought there was nothing we could do with the property but you guys have shown there's lots to do with property out there. I think it's about time for a road trip!
This is such a good video to come back to. I giggled when you said that the prices were at their highest 3 years ago. We all thought that. We never thought it would get this crazy.
So now it’s 2021 you should do a follow up to this video. Love you guys and would love to know if you made it to debt free finally. I have followed since you got on the land and I am amazed by you everyday. 💚💚
We’ve been following you two for a while, but hadn’t seen this video yet! It’s really neat to flash in to the past 3 years and see what your mindset was and then see where you’re at now! You’ve come quite a ways in 3 years! Your story is similar to ours in that yearning for something other than 8-5 M-F for the next 20 years! Great job!
I started watching your videos around the time my wife and I started paying off our debts (Nov 2019). Today (jun 2022) we are 5 months from paying off our last debt, our mortgage... we have now started looking at options to buy land. I just turned 37 so I'm pretty much on schedule to follow your steps 😂🤣 Thanks for doing what you do, sharing is caring. We send lots of love from Monterrey, México.
After watching your videos for about 3 years, I find this! So good to hear the backstory. You're doing great. I am off grid too, but in a more conventional house, outside of Tucson.
I was born in Wisconsin, family still live there. Retired Army, soon retired postal. Even better, soon to be off gridders in Elko county Nevada. Found you and said, these folks are who we can relate to. So many questions I have for you.
Look at the bounty of all the work the two of you have worked so hard over three years to produce, and steep in the comfort that this is only the dawning of a full and rich life. A truly good job, well done.
I just came across this video of you guys and it’s funny how a few days ago I mention to you through instagram how I love that you take the time to show everyone your hard work and how people can benefit and get inspire to do the same. Thanks for teaching the world how to be homesteaders and practice permaculture, especially for young people.
Great dream J & J. Proper goals, excellent move into the 'buy low, sell high' property ladder. Good research and study effort by you both. Superb property buying standards and selection methods (suspect money, regulation-free and climate were the major factors). Most important is having the right partner to be with on this 'great adventure'! I'll be watching with ENTHUSIASM!!!
You really never retire. You simply began building your personal empire. You'll enjoy far greater returns from your efforts while living a good, clean sustainable life. On your terms. The best you both of you in your endeavors.
Ive been watching your newer videos lately but this video just came in my feed. I too am quiting my job at the tender age of 39, Friday will be my last day in fact. Yes its very scary since I do have a small family to take care of but if you can do it I can too. Thanks for the inspiration!
I just found this video and wondered how you started. I've been watching your videos and subscribed about 6 months ago. We kind of did the same thing to buy our current home in 2007 and paid cash for it. Next year we are going on the road and will be looking for vacant land and eventually putting a small home like a shed home. I'm too old to build an earth bag home but Wan to get off the grid as much as possible. We will then sell our current home and use it to finance some of the things we'll need for solar, water harvesting and so forth and the rest is just a cushion. Good for you for doing it while you are still young and healthy and have time to enjoy life
Student Loans 😡 it makes me furious to think how many young adults have been turned into debt-slaves by that scam. The colleges & banks all get rich. Poor kids start getting sucked into the scam in high school “career day” assemblies, pressured into debt that they can never escape. What a racket! Even worse, it drove up the cost of tuition for college and vocational school. Downright predatory!
Without all of my student loan debt I would've probably retired a bit sooner. Though I'm not sure how much less I'd have been earning so who knows. I do have to say though, I didn't recognize you in the thumbnail, and in your more recent videos you seem so much happier though that may be my biased imagination.
Invest some of those funds into silver, or even gold. But silver is the one that could bring you the greatest gains over the next few years. It could especially help against inflation. Buy silver coins, not silver certificates. Leaving it all in the Bank is a waste.
Hey Jim, I've been watching your dome building videos for a while. I am all with you, in regards to getting off the rat face. What you guys are doing is very hard. Specially with lack of water and other challenges related to living in the area you are living. Is this sustainable long term? Would you have been better of looking for slightly more expensive land in a different area with more water and other resources? I attempted off grid living on a property in CA. The high cost of developing the land and dealing with the County building and permit challenges, not to mention the heat, the flies and the mosquitos; made the experiment untenable. What you guys are doing seems very hard.
Hey Jim and Jess, I got lucky and found this old video. I retired when I was 44 years old. Unfortunately it wasn't my decision. I had 4 back surgeries and just couldn't work anymore. That was 1991 and I now live in Thailand and getting ready to build my last home. I plan to get a RUclips channel up and running soon document the entire process. The house is about 800 square meters so it's pretty big so it will go on a good size oh land. It's not as big as your property but it will do. It's 20 rai that's just under 8 acres. We will connect to the grid mainly so we can sell our electric that we generate to the electric company. Don't know how much we will generate but I think it will be more than we generate. I will let you know when I get my channel up and running.
soooo, you didn't retire. you got a nice chunk of change from your house investment. Now you're completely dependent on your garden and that money will run out soon. eventually you'll need to get a job or find some source of income. I get turned off by click bait titles if you can't already see that.
@@ourselfreliantlife yes, because you will have to work eventually. And you are working full time creating your homestead. You will need to work full time to keep your homestead once it's up and running. You can try to say you're not working but it's clear that you are working your tail off. Glad for you that enjoy your life now. That doesn't take away from your plethora of videos with clickbait titles.
