From Salil Chowdhury to RDB, from Anand-Milind to Ajay-Atul, he is held in high regards by them all. RDB, in 1982, after listening to his song "Yedho mogam" said "IR is ahead of us all by 10 years"! Salil, looking at the guitarist in his troupe, told his friend: "He is going to be India's greatest composer one day". That guitarist was none other than ILAYARAJA! Naushad said in 1986 while launching IR's How to name it album "There is so much to learn from Ilayaraja". Several Hindustani exponents - Ustad Sultan Khan (Guna album), Pandits Ajoy Chakrabarty (Namrata ke Saagar song, and Hey Ram song), Bhimsen Joshi, singers Rajashree Pathak, duo Rajan-Sajan etc. have either sung or played for IR. Asha Bhosle's first Tamil song was for IR. Lata Mangeshkar said "his songs are intricate". Gulzar said IR songs are difficult to pen lyrics for.
