We can say one thing about Putin, he really cares about his country and military. The guy has done more for Russia than any other Russian president. He is very patriotic, for example look at what he has done to Russian military and economy in the past 15 years or so is truly remarkable. I know they don't have the best interest in mind for America which i love, but as a honest man you have to respect Putin as he was shocked, and angered by the situation in Russia when he originally took power! we all thought it was just an act and political talk and empty promises. He has taken his country out of the hell they where in, and put them back on the map as a power house, in all honesty what he has done is respectable and very scary at the same time. Russian should be proud of him that's for sure, he did what he said.

The explanation for the Nato codename "Blackjack: is new to me. II'd always taken "B;lackjack" to be a reference to a game of nuclear cards. The TU160 certainly trumps anyone else's strategic bomber, B2 notwithstanding, it is the culmination of a very long development cycle and a just source of pride. To me, Blackjack is more apt than the beatific Russian "White Swan:.

@@maksimluzin1121 I don't mean a bomb that explodes, I mean a fairly heavy object with radiolocation, so the deflection at different altitudes can be measured.

@@LouisSamuel82 , No! At least, I never hear about such a bomb in Russian aviation. The SVP-24 system collect different data about different objects, including meteorological conditions, the target parameters (for example, coordinates), the flight parameters (altitude, speed, direction), the munition (bomb) parameters (its shape, weight and aerodynamic characteristics). The SVP-24 system even collects data from different sensors of the plane, for example, its construction vibration and other physical parameters. It is enough for the task, to drop a 'dumb' bomb with the highest precision characteristics comparable to the 'smart' bombs from a quite high altitude and distance. The pilot just select a target, and the SVP-24 system takes the control of the plane and releases the bomb automatically just before about 10 minutes before reaching the pre-calculated 'drop point'. So, the process is highly automated, at least, after 'pressing the button'... The pilot do not participate in the process at all, at least, in its final phase after selecting a target and activating the SVP-24 system.

@@maksimluzin1121 Interesting. I wouldn't have expected structural vibration to have an effect, or that you could do much about it. Wouldn't you just damp the release mechanism? My starting point would be to measure pressure, temperature and humidity at the aircraft, then use the barometric equation to get air density at different altitudes all the way to target level. With this, you could calculate the trajectory of the bomb knowing its weight, drag coefficient, initial velocity and direction. I figure it should always point in the direction of motion because of the fins, so the drag coefficient wouldn't change much. The major unknown would be variation in direction and speed of the wind at different altitudes. Not an expert but I guess that with mountains or with thermal coastal winds it might be tricky to predict. This could be measured with a Sodar if they have a small one with a really large range and don't worry about electronic emissions.

"But the Russians still operate some." - Just 'some'? :-))) Actually, more than 60 Tu-22M3 are in service in Russian AF at the moment! The Tu-22M3, after it modernization, still will be in service up to 8-10 years from now. Yes, it is planned to replace Tu-22M3 with a new strategical bomber, like 'PAK DA' ('ПАК ДА'), but the Tu-22M3 is still very useful for many military tasks.
