A not so affable video.
I’d like to point out guys, I realise the title sounds like an over-the-top hyperbolic statement, but I genuinely believe if this keeps happening, it’ll make filming in public in Japan more difficult, whether that’s RUclipsrs, streamers or the general public.
Japan is extremely tolerant and generous when it comes to folks filming publicly (as I mentioned in the video) and this risks undermining that atmosphere.
When I pull out a camera to shoot a video, I don’t want the folks around me to suddenly feel a sense of dread, because they’ve seen morons like this undertaking awful behaviour over and over, reported in the media.

I will do my utmost to offset their idiocy by being extra respectful when we go back to Tokyo in February. These guys really boil my piss with their disrespect.

As a Japanese woman myself, a lot of this behavior is just highly disrespectful to how we live and our culture. I am not bold enough to do anything about it, but something needs to be done.
I've seen people filming on the streets before, pretty much all of them were respectful, kind, and understanding of others going about their days. I hope this changes for the better going forward.

As a non-Japanese, I feel truly ashamed and sad about these types of RUclipsrs. They lack basic human decency. I am finally fulfilling my long-time dream this year and going as a tourist soon to Japan. Honestly, RUclips should be somewhat held accountable. They are allowing the promotion of crime on their website. If it is so easy to strike a RUclipsr for using a copyright material, why is it so hard to manage RUclipsrs committing crimes (trespassing, theft, etc), especially when it is so obvious.
Yep that is true. RUclips was also a place used by terrorist, gangs and other crime organization to recruit more followers which I've seen in the darkest part of youtube that usually take months or sometimes years before RUclips even does a move on removing those kind of videos.
Because copyright material is more easily spotted by the algorithm than crimes.

@@cristinaflorina9538 the thing is that is rarely a real human that checks reported videos, or videos in general. I heard artists on yt that got their videos striked because they were painting too much bare skin and the algorithm mistaken that for porn.

That's actually a wonderful idea in concept. It's unfortunate that these people will be very persistent in coming back and making new accounts and doing whatever it is to get back on. With that said, they should just straight up go to jail for a few months every time they make stupid videos causing problems for other people.
If RUclips didn’t send a stern punishment against certain “famous & mayor youtuber” because she doxxed a content creator a few days ago; I highly doubt they would do anything here.

Those are all crimes and it'd be a shocker to ONLY get a few months behind bars.
I want to go to Japan so bad but finances are holding me back from doing so.

Basically, it's my dream to visit as well, and it's heartbreaking to see people taking advantage of the privilege it is to travel to different countries in such an immature way.
when I went to study in Korea, 4 other students were chosen to go with me and NONE was interested in Korea. They even mocked the locals there. Meanwhile I knew at least 5 girls who studied Korean and would've loved to spend 1 semester there. Life is so unfair. I also went to study in Japan twice, and some of the students there who were on a full Japanese govmnt scholarship only chose Japan because of job opportunities, and were otherwise uninterested😅
I live in Japan as a foreigner for about 5 years now, came as a student and a year ago starting working as a full time employee. I always try to follow the rules in here, just be respectful. Last week, I went to Fuji , Kawaguchiko for few days, and as you can imagine there are lot of tourists there cause obviously because of Fuji, beautiful scenery, famous Fuji Q highland theme park. When I went to the bathroom in one of the stations there, the trashcans near toilets were filled with toilet papers when it specifically says there to flush it. I don't get it why is it hard to research common dos and don'ts before coming to a different country, and even then blatantly disregarding rules written there. I felt sad because obviously not many foreigners are like that and there are many tourists who follow the rules, but this just paints an overall picture of GAIJINS are bad , shouldn't come to Japan notion. So while i get it that not all of us like that, still Japanese ppl must be very tired of foreigners and they just want their place to be respected and treated with consideration.
When I just recently visited for the first time, I saw signs in the bathrooms saying to flush the toilet paper. My first thought was "who the fuck doesn't know to flush their toilet paper?" Like this isn't a Japanese rule you have to understand and follow, it's basic hygiene of all 1st world countries. Not knowing how to flush is 3rd world shit, how are they getting into Japan?
What also makes me feel icky about Johnny Somali is that he deliberately boarded an all woman train at one point cause "he didn't get why they needed one" and perfectly demonstrated why they needed one by making them uncomfortable while filming.
He just got handed a 5 years prison sentence in Japan.

I was recently in Japan and saw a tourist lie down on part of Shibuya crossing while his friend filmed him. He didn't move even when an older Japanese woman carrying shopping tripped over him and fell to the ground. No idea why they thought this was in any way funny or acceptable. The kind of behaviour that makes you really ashamed to be a tourist, especially in a place like Japan.
I wonder what kind of 'trend' is this? Is it another stupid new trend from TikTok? Because recently in Bali there's also TikTok viral video about some tourists with similar behaviour just like you mentioned, one of them lying on the road while the other filming. They're causing a traffic.

I have always hated people that responds to humble and educated people abusing and lauginh off them. Japan people treated us very kindly everywhere we visited on our 17 days visit. I know there´s the tatemae and honne way of thinking, but most people seemed to me genuinely kind all the time. (excuse my possible English errors,I m Spanish).

Usually I don’t like when RUclipsrs jump on the trend of current drama but I feel you’re the perfect person to cover this drama and I thank you for bringing attention to it.
It's not really jumping on a trend though, Chris was essentially held as an ambassador for all foreigners on a TV show, He obviously didn't want to make a video about more of these idiots but felt a duty to do so as one of the bigger creators showing genuine tourists what not to do.
I mean, it's not "drama" for him since it personally affects him. Like the previous commenter said, because he kinda got pushed into the ambassador role by national TV, but also because more filming bans resulting from this means less places he could film (in a respectful way) in either

This really pisses me off... I lived in Japan a number of years and contrary to perception, the Japanese are kind, helpful people. I remember when I first arrived being in the Yokohama bus station and asking a local if he spoke English, as the trains were quite confusing at first, and while he didn't, he held in to my arm and asked others until he found someone who could help me.
I'd say that it isn't "contrary to perception" -- it's that exact idea which motivates these "content creators" to screw with Japan for money.

Some random shopkeeper stacking vegetables took us to our hotel two blocks away because he couldn't describe the way in english - leaving his shop unattended; the chief of staff of *Tokyo trainstation* personally showed us to our lockers when we got lost in that maze! Just two instances of remarkable friendliness I experienced in Japan when visiting. I'd hate to see that get ruined by random twats and view-whores.

"Clout chasing" (as the internet calls it) is such a prevalent issue everywhere, and the fact that these people have not been viciously deplatformed (or arrested) for committing literal crimes has only emboldened them and those around them, I'd even go so far as to say that they've made the term "clout chaser" synonymous with "active criminal"

The Somali guy was kicked off YT and has been kicked off his latest platform too I believe, too little too late. The problem is the platforms themselves aren't held to account, and as long as idiots like him bring in revenue they really don't care until there is enough backlash to make advertisers think twice.
Currently in Japan as a tourist and its pretty bad. There are a number of tourists who are being so disrespectful, a lot of people who did not do any research or readings before coming here. You can hear the locals comment on their behavior. 😭 Despite this, they have been so welcoming and kind to us.

I saw that in October, too, in Osaka. Some Polish guys were accusing the local venue that they "cheated" them on money. They were arguing for 15 minutes. But the fact was that there was a service fee they did not want to pay. They basically forced the lady to give them a discount. The whole bunch of locals waiting felt evident discontent. Many tourists come and misbehave. In Kyoto, too, when filming, basically everything stands in the way of others and locals. Unfortunate as it is.
@@rkarcade7417 That sounds more like a misunderstanding than purposefully being a nuisance. In a lot of countries (probably not so much in Japan) local services and people will try to scam foreigners out of money. And the service fee was maybe not shown in English and maybe not beforehand leading to the guy feeling he was being cheated or targeted

I don't know... when I see Chris body language and overall behavior in his videos when he is together with other Japanese people, I cannot help but think that it comes over as indifferent, western-ignorant. Standing sideways, with a bored unmotivated look, taking things with one hand.

Okinawa was my very first duty station after joining the Marines. I went on to be stationed at Camp Fuji and Iwakuni. My love for Japan and it’s people is immeasurable and I really respect how much honor you give their culture. They are the kindest and most accommodating people to everyone and unfortunately the dumbasses of the world like to take advantage. Your video on climbing up Mt. Fuji was so awesome I almost felt like I was home again, and I remembered things from my own experience of climbing it that I’d forgotten about for almost 25 years since having to come back to the states. I wish Japan made it easier for foreigners to permanently relocate there, because I would move back in a heartbeat.

Japanese RUclipsrs I know actually get permission from the locations they plan to take their videos beforehand. I think that’s really admirable.

I'm currently in Japan. These recent events have made me extra aware of how I behave so that i do not offend anyone, and I'm making sure every exchange with a Japanese person is a positive one.
I'm concerned that we may end up in a situation where streaming will be banned, affecting good people like Connor, Rob, Pete etc 😪😡
That's my fear too. If this isn't handled in house (i.e. RUclips and other social media sites), it will be handled by govts. I don't know about you, but I don't trust any government to handle anything to do with social media in a way that isn't heavy handed and comes with a lot of collateral damage for good people.

I’m glad someone brought this up. Formally I was in the Marines and infantry at that. But, before that I was first and foremost an anime fan and was overwhelmingly excited in 2016 when I finally got to take a 3 weeks vacation in Japan. Despite the negative stereotypes associated with Americans and military I did the very best I could to be extremely respectful of others and the culture and did the best I could, as I had in every country I visited, to be a model tourist. It saddens me that this week I’ve seen not one but, two videos of foreigners being arrested in Japan for purposely violating the law for RUclips clout. Please guys when visiting other countries represent your home country in the best possible fashion and remember that you are a guest.

Having just returned from Japan, I can't express enough how kind and polite every Japanese person is over there! From the taxi drivers who pause the meter at traffic lights near our hotel to the bus driver in Kyoto who assisted me when my Suica card stopped working while paying the bus fare, every interaction with the locals was truly remarkable. Everyone in Japan is exceptionally polite and delightful to interact with. It saddens me to witness these sh*t-fluencers taking advantage of the wonderful people of Japan.

I'm 10000% with you, mate. Had all these experiences myself and I'm happy that my wife showed me many of typical japanese traditions and nuances beforehand so I wouldn't unwillingly make a fool out of myself. We tried to respect all these important details and imitate behavior and aside from my beginner's level japanese the locals seemed impressed and delighted. And then we saw the tourists: loud, nasty, smelly, ignoring etiquette, not adapting to anything, uninformed, sometimes disrespecting important places. Especially the special snowflakes aka streamers and influencers...
It made me irate and I felt so ashamed for us, even without having any connection. I just hope the locals won't grow tired of outsider's anytime.
I recently read that they want to limit or completely passage to the mount Fuji because of the litter-issue and overcrowding. It makes me sad that they have to resort to such means.
Yeah, if anything, I hated being around tourists when in Japan lol. Well, most of them didn't speak english anyway, but the ones that did speak a language I could partly understand (French) were pretty rude. We see them in the Caribbean resorts too, being rude.

Glad you picked this one up, I saw and article in the Guardian Australia and was so disappointed that these clowns have so many subscribers given their poor behaviour and lack of respect. Sadly it's not surprising in today's world. As a traveller to Japan, I have been met with nothing but helpfulness and kindness everywhere I have gone by the Japanese people. We drove 2500kms around Honshu in July this year and met some beautiful people and we cannot wait to return again. Arigatougozaimasu Japan!

You shouldn't think about it like that. There is always a trade-off to anything. To talk about it like that means to ignore the good that came out of these things. For example, the world is more aware now with the internet. RUclipsrs and streamers are normal people that became successful and you wouldn't have Abroad in Japan without it.

Recently there seems to be more and more news in the social media (e.g. folks lifting the barrier open without paying for parking) that foreigners are causing problems in Japan. For some of us who actually wants and fancy the idea of living in Japan is just going to become an uphill struggle to live and adapt. As much as I love Japan it is a place which is incredibly different from my home country. And as much as I want to learn Japanese and adapt to cultural norms, there is going to be more and more prejudice and double standards on foreigners making mistakes as they are trying to learn and adapt......Time is a great healer and all that so fingers crossed that foreigners in general will be seen in some more positive light.

I don't understand why RUclips and other platforms don't ban these guys. RUclips is quick to censor comments that do not break their rules, but yet they allow people like these guys to put their hideous content up. Its ridiculous.
I tried to call out before about that fidias criminal on it creating a sub channel to prevent the shadowban and get monetized for its crimes again, but youtube being a dummy head told me that it's "free speech" so it won't ban those criminals.

I went to Japan with my 8 year old grand-daughter last April. The Japanese people were wonderful and looked after us really well.
It's terrible that foreigners visiting Japan stop at the Shibuya Scramble Crossing and take pictures with their smartphones or obstruct the passage.
Many foreigners throw garbage and cigarette butts on the streets.
Such disregard for manners by foreigners has become commonplace.
For Japanese people who follow good manners and live a normal life, this is nothing but a nuisance.
I think that to take a pic in the middle of the flow - if you're not blocking people - is fine. But it's not your own private social media spot - it's a very busy, very public place - you Have to respect that, and be aware of both every other person passing And the lights changing. If you stop for 5 or 10 seconds out on the edge, out of the main flow - fine, but then move on with everyone else. You can always keep crossing as many times as you want, to continue.

Another place is an anime spot in Shonan. Tourists are in the street and the local drivers having difficult times. Also it's quite ironic that Chris is calling out those influencers but he himself was the one who did an IRL streaming with Cdawg and Pete in Golden Gai for money where filming is banned in the street and wasn't even apologetic when an old lady came after scolding them. Now that place is becoming a tourist spot rather than old local neighborhood gatherings spot, destroy long lasting culture 😔
When I watch YT's Shibuya Crossing live broadcast, I see that there are many tourists who do not obey Japan's road traffic laws, which is a real problem. I am worried that it may lead to an accident.

I lived in Japan for 3 years. Japanese are some of the most generous, honest and friendly people I’ve ever met. These “creators” who go over there, or to any country, and break the rules and cause people distress for views need to be prosecuted just like Johnny then be virtually kneecapped by being banned from their platforms, and of course be banned from entry to Japan.

I have been to Japan 4 times now with my last trip there in April 2023. I had a blast on my recent trip filming my experiences, the cool places we visited, the sites, the scenery, and of course, the geocaches I found there. It was a wonderful time and I am looking forward to a return visit (hopefully soon). Seeing these idiots out there causing all this trouble really makes me mad. it makes me afraid that if I am vlogging my adventures there on a return visit, that people could be seeing me as part of the problem.
Is there anything that you would recommend for us decent vloggers to do or keep in mind while we are there? Of course, things like: don't be an idiot and don't be like these guys are pretty obvious but would there be anything else to keep in mind. Especially with things going on in Kyoto.

I saw an american girl in late 20-30s yelling at a JPN old lady in 80s in the bullet train the other day. I asked what's going on and the girl said "the old lady wouldn't switch her seat." I assumed the old lady had sat in the wrong seat and gently asked her to show her train ticket, and you know what the old lady was sitting exactly where she should be sitting. I was confused but the girl basically wanted to kick the old lady out so that she would be able to sit with her boyfriend side by side. I was speechless.
I am Japanese, and while it can be frustrating to see some foreigners, I don't hold a negative view of all foreigners. Every country has its share of foolish individuals, and I find it a joy to see tourists enjoying themselves.
Japan needs to create a do not enter list, that list needs to be shared with airlines.

For Christmas, I wish that Fidias and Johnny's sense of adventure and mischief rise even further and finally get out of hand to the point of serious injury, getting trapped on a remote island without any means of communication, or just good old jail time.

I was born and raised in Japan and it’s sad to see how my parents/friends etc are starting to dislike “gaijin” (foreigners) the more they see these kinds of news.

I would of cared in the past but not anymore. Many People here in Canada and USA are very prejudice and east asians face discrimination too so don't feel bad. Well all over the world the majority gets treated the best.
Distrust or dislike of foreigners has always been fairly easy to provoke in Japan. It happens in every country, of course. But Japan has a tradition of insularity which makes it a bit different
You should get them to watch more Aboard in Japan! ;) He's a perfect example of having many foreign friends join the adventures of enjoying Japan, that should help some of their worries.
I'm a 27 year old welder in America and I went to Japan a week ago for the first time in my life and absolutely loved it there. I hope these douchebag RUclipsr's, especially the foreign one's, don't ruin it for me as I hope to return and/or move to Japan in the near future. I've been watching your videos since 2 years after you posted the Culture Shock video and I enjoy your content Chris. It definitely prepared me for what to expect realistically in japan. Even tho I heard of this beforehand, I was still shocked by how cheap the food and tickets to events were and loved it even more. Such good food. Thank you for what you do, Chris. sir going to Japan will be a terrible idea, if you are going to work for 1 of the japanese corp, u will regret it. If you are a sole proprietor or doing business and as a transition to trade or sell items better start building relationships. It matter most and above all else About their culture include in the being respectful thing. VERY IMPORTANT. Make sure you deliver above and beyond because they will share it with their friends.
