It’s funny how you are angered by the fact that “the reds” are basically just doing what Europe did to the world for 500 years… they claimed 2-3 continents to their names (America, Africa and Oceania), and meddled in a bunch of Asian Citites (Hong Kong for example) despite not living remotely close to those places.

Of course say, Poland, is just as much entitled to Arctic interests as China. In foreign politics, however, readiness and ability for significant commitment matter way more than legitimacy and thus far Poland has not spent the same kind of money on all things Arctic as China has decided to.
China has additionally been adding bits of Russian Siberia to their official maps as of late. With Russia bleeding dry in Ukraine and the Chinese increasingly dominating Russian economy (~30% in both exports and imports by late 2023), who's to say that soon enough there won't be a Chinese naval base on Kamtchatka peninsula?

As a Canadian myself, who happens to be keen on geopolitics, I have long found that our government is pretty much doing nothing to affirm our sovereignty in the Arctic.
We have the ressources available, but our Coast Guard is not militarized like that of the USA and our military is poorly managed - it's not even a question of money, our military is known to have actually "returned" money assigned to it to Ottawa because they simply had no way to spend it that made any sense.
It's a deep structural problem, and I'm afraid it's going to bite us in the a$$ eventually, especially when it comes to our Arctic Archipelago.

the arctic sea barrier will make sure nobody gets there. as the ice melts, the whole area becomes a lot more unstable thanks to the simple physics of a rotating planet. Basically, stronger, more persistant storms=nope to all trying to conquer it.

Russians for example only have short distance from their shore whefe they controll who goea and who does not. So this is pretty useles topic.

I do feel the need to point out some conflicting information regarding the effect of climate change on the Arctic.
    - First, previous predictions about the loss of ice coverage have not come to fruition.
    - Second, the potential reduction in emissions through the use of an Arctic route would actually be seen as beneficial.
    - Third, we have essentially zero ability to predict the effects on global air and ocean currents from the melting of the Arctic. Our inability to predict those leads to a greater uncertainty on the knock-on effects to weather patterns.
It's simply too complex for us to model. For example, the increase in water could result in greater evaporation. This raises the question of greater rain/snowfall in areas that are currently desert or steppe climates. Furthermore, we don't know what the dilution of salt in the oceans could do either. It's important to remember that every variable and every year added into a computer model increases uncertainty. We are talking about global trends. It's insane that we are making policies that have massive effects today on such an uncertain basis for the effects decades in the future.

    • @freedomfighter22222
      @freedomfighter22222 Месяц назад +4

In the arctic, not on arctic as "on arctic" seems to imply the entire Arctic.
Just like every country with a coastline Russia has laid claim on their continental shelf which for most countries are indeed much further out than their coastline.
The Russian claims were not validated, their scientific basis for their claims were validated and recommendations made to the UN with that basis.
But several other countries have overlapping claims with Russia and are also handing in their scientific basis for their claims.
As sometimes(like in the arctic) countries share continental shelfs that one country has gotten their science basis validated does not mean their claims are or will be validated.
All the territory within the range of the Russian claim that nobody else has overlapping claims on is however likely to eventually be validated as Russian continental shelf.
