Bericht: Refit of the San Giovanni class of Gepanzerkreuzer. Schiffbaudirektion: Bericht der Direktion: 19-Nov-1899 Brief: The San Giovanni 1899 refit covers one Gepanzerkreuzer designed to a target displacement of 5,900 tons and a top speed of 18.5 knots. This refit is of the San Giovanni class Incrociatore corazzato Pace taken from Italy in the peace treaty. Propulsion: The class has three triple expansion engines provided steam by three induced draft boilers burning coal vented though two funnels generating 9,120 indicated horsepower turning three screws for a reduced top speed of 18 knots on a design displacement of 5,895 tons fully loaded with a balanced rudder turned by hydraulic power for an operational range of 4,424 nautical miles. This replaces three steam engines provided steam by three naturally aspirated boilers burning coal vented though one funnel generating 9,713 indicated horsepower turning three screws for the required top speed on a design displacement of 5,894 tons fully loaded with a balanced rudder turned by steam power for an operational range of 2,409 nautical miles. Armament: The class' main battery is now two twin turrets mounted fore and aft bearing 8"/29 Mark 2 guns with 7.3" face, 0.5" top, 7.3" barbette nickel steel armor, turned by advanced hydraulic power with enhanced reloading, using the new coincidence range finders and with shell handling in the barbette and internal barbette armor replacing two single mounts fore and aft bearing 9.1"/29 Mark 1 guns. The main magazine carries a balanced load of standard sized 50% Base Fuze HE and 50% Capped AP shells using White Powder as the propellant and TNT as the bursting charge. The secondary battery is sixteen single casemates mounted seven per sides bearing 4"/33 Mark 2 guns with 3" face and 0.5" top nickel steel armor and replaces the 3"/22 Mark 1 casemates. An original tertiary battery consists of four 1.9"/28 Mark 1 guns has been removed. The secondary magazine carries a HE heavy standard load of standard sized 62.5% Base Fuze HE and 37.5% Capped AP shells. Six Mark 1 under water tubes launching a standard load of 17" torpedoes, replacing the original 15", with compressed air aided combustion rounds out the armament. Protection: Nickel steel armor is now clade 7" on the main belt, 2" on the extended belt, 0.3" on the main deck, 0.5" on the extended deck, 0.2" on the inner deck, 2" on the superstructure, and 7" on the conning tower replacing the original Compound armor. The Class has a single bottom hull and now reinforced bulkheads separating extensive compartmentation, counter-flooding systems to avoid listing, pumps and piping for flooding reduction, and anti-torpedo bulges. A crew of reduced from 508 to 470 officers and enlisted men will be provided standard quarters. Construction: The refit will cover the former Italian ship Pace. Refit time will be 4 month with a recommissioning time of 2 months. Valuation of the ship will rise to $24,881,600 and monthly maintenance in port will now be $1,020,145.
Royalist Remnants? 05:55: Die Presse: Wein MDCCCXCIX, 15 September 1899 The Adjudicator, lead of her class of Schlachtschiffe, and her sister ship “Rylanor, Ancient of Rites”, from the Pula Seearsenal, was still on patrol in the Central Mediterranean with two Viper class Torpedoboote, the Viper T-8 and Viper T-9, from the Cattaro Marinestation, and were joined by the Python class Torpedoboot Python T-14, from the Spalato Marinestation, when they heard about the Revolution in Rome. Their orders however were to remain on patrol and accept battle with any Italian warships that offered it. Thus they found themselves facing the Fulminante, lead ship of her incrociatori corazzati class, the Capera class Incrociatore protetto Cornelio Silla, the Saetta class 1890 refit Incrociatore protetto Marsala, and the Sagittario class Torpediniera Fionda. Had the Italian ships been sent out to keep them far from Rome because of suspected Royalist leanings? Viper T-8 lead the Torpedoboote forward to scout the enemy while Rylanor had the honor of leading Adjudicator forward. Viper T-8 found Fionda trying to close past her at Rylanor. T-8 turned to drive her off while Rylanor sighted the Incrociatori and closed on them. Rylanor took the first hit, a 9” shell from Fulminante. Adjudicator took Fulminante under fire while Rylanor targeted the Incrociatori protetti. Adjudicator came round to a parallel course with Fulminante and began exchanging fire. Adjudicator took flooding forward before she found the range on her enemy. The fight saw Fulminante get a flooding hit aft and burn through all of her 9.1” HE shells. Adjudicator then got a flooding hit aft on Fulminante which also set off her 9” powder magazine, launching her A turret skyward. Fulminante sank with 748 of her 809 man crew. Rylanor meanwhile took out the Marsala with a main belt penetrating 10” shell. Marsala sank with 320 of her 348 man crew. Rylanor turned her guns on Cornelio Silla, who soon had flooding aft and amidships, her 4.7” gun turret destroyed, and over 100 casualties reported. Another solid flooding hit amidship and Cornelio Silla sank with 311 of her 339 man crew. Fionda, doubtlessly a good republican, had been chased off into the sunset by the Torpedoboote, which were recalled. Viper V-8 had taken 4 casualties. Fionda was reported to have taken 4 as well. Adjudicator took 117 casualties. “Rylanor, Ancient of Rites” took 27. They picked up 117 Marina Militare survivors. They were not pressed on their political leanings.
Re: Refit of two San Pietro Alcantar class of Schlachtschiff. Bureau of Construction and Repair, Design Division: Bureau Report: 15-Nov-1899 Breift: The San Pietro Alcantar 1999 refit will cover two battleships taken in the peace treaty from Italy and originally designed to a target displacement of 10,900 tons and a top speed of 15.1 knots. Propulsion: The ships had three steam engines provided steam by three naturally aspirated boilers burning coal vented though two funnels generating 3,913 indicated horsepower turning three screws for a new speed of 18 knots on a design displacement of 10,891 tons fully loaded with a semi-balanced rudder turned by steam power for an operational range of 2,027 nautical miles. Now the ships will have three triple expansion engines provided steam by three induced draft boilers burning coal vented though three funnels generating 6,071 indicated horsepower turning three screws for the required top speed on a design displacement of 10,817 tons fully loaded with a balanced rudder turned by hydraulic power for an operational range of 3,614 nautical miles. Armament: The original main battery was two twin turrets mounted fore and aft bearing 12"/31 Mark 1 guns with compound armor. These have been replaced with two twin turrets mounted fore and aft bearing 11"/47 Mark 2 guns with 15.9" face, 4" top, 12" barbette nickel steel armor, turned by advanced hydraulic power with enhanced reloading, using coincidence range finders and with shell handling in the barbette and internal barbette armor. The main magazine now carries a balanced load of standard sized 50% Base Fuze HE and 50% Capped AP shells using White Powder as the propellant and TNT as the bursting charge. The Italians had an increased AP loadout. The original secondary and tertiary are almost inexplicable. They had two 6.2”/37 mark 1 casemate guns mounted in the forward corners of the central battery. These were supplemented by ten 4.3”/32 mark 1 casemate guns in the rest of the central battery’s main level, and six 3.3/33 mark 1 casemates in the upper level of the central battery. Eight 1.5” gun mounts provided the tertiary. Now the secondary battery is twelve casemates mounted six per sides bearing 4"/32 Mark 2 guns with 2" face and 0.5 top nickel steel armor. A tertiary battery consists of seven casemates three per side and one centered forward on the main tower bearing 2"/37 Mark 2 guns with 1.5" face and 0.5" top nickel steel armor and four single 2”/26 mark 2 gun mounts in the secondary tower. The secondary and tertiary magazines carry a HE increased load of standard sized 62.5% Base Fuze HE and 37.5% Capped AP shells. The Italian design did not include torpedo tubes, now four Mark 1 under water tubes launching a standard load of 17" torpedoes with compressed air aided combustion rounds out the armament. Protection: The original chunky and ill-conceived Italian protection scheme was compound armor clade 13” on the main belt and 3.8” on the extended belts, deck, superstructure, and conning tower, 2.3” on the inner deck. Now nickel steel armor is clade 16” on the main belt, 4” on the extended belt, 2” on the main deck, 0.5” on the extended deck, 1.2” on the inner deck, 4” on the superstructure, and 15” on the conning tower. The ships had only increased compartmentation in a single bottom hull. With the refit they have reinforced bulkheads separating extensive compartmentation, counter-flooding systems to avoid listing, pumps and piping for flooding reduction, and anti-torpedo bulges. The original quarters for the 908 man crew were spacious and this has not been reduced, but the complement is now 929 officers and men. Construction: From what records we were provided the build time was 13 months. Cost per ship was $48,149,770, and monthly maintenance in port of $2,118,590. With the refit of the Venere Armata, and Santissimo Crocelisso, refit time will be 4 month with a recommissioning time of 3 months. Valuation of each ship will rise to $50,685, and monthly maintenance in port will now be $2,078,111.
Battle of the Gulf of Libya 00:20: Die Presse: Wein MDCCCXCIX, 10 September 1899 The Viper class Torpedoboot Viper T-16 and the Python class Torpedoboot Python T-6, from the Cattaro Marinestation, joined the Python class Torpedoboote Python T-8 and Python T-11, from the Spalato Marinestation, on a deep commerce denial mission to the Gulf of Libya. They were found by the San Giovanni class Incrociatore corazzato Carlo Alberto operating alone, and decided to give battle. On sighting Carlo Alberto Viper T-16 detached to proceed alone while the Pythons formed p on T-6 with T-8 and T-11 following. Viper T-16 came up on Carlo Alberto’s starboard side and Python T-6 on her port side. Carlo Alberto chose to fire on Viper T-16, hitting her with a 2” shell. T-16 continued to close, swinging to port to open her two dual launchers. The aft launcher fired first, then the forward launcher, giving the strike a crossing pattern. Python T-6 had launched hers as well and T-11 was coming up. Python T-8 was badly out of position. Python T-6 got two solid hits. T-11 launched her two as Viper T-16’s torpedoes reached the target, but only one hit. All three hits have been aft. T-11’s torpedoes looked like they would pass in front of the slowing Carlo Alberto with her flooded aft. Both actually hit but one failed to detonate while the other hit forward and started the bow flooding. T-8 was closing and looking to see what the results were of the previous strikes. With it clear Carlo Alberto wasn’t flooding out T-8 closed for what she hoped would be the killing blows. Carlo Alberto launched her own starboard tubes just as T-8 authorized her launch. T-8 couldn’t avoid the incoming torpedoes as hard as she turned while Carlo Alberto was essentially sitting for them. One of T-8’s torpedoes was a dud but the other hit square amidships and exploded. T-8 in turn took two hits on amidships as well. A seventh and eight compartment began to flood on Carlo Alberto, and she sank with 466 of her 508 man crew. Python T-8 survived with just 2 casualties. Viper T-16 also took 2 casualties. 42 personnel of the Marina Militare were captured.

It seems the most optimal way to play the game from 1890-1900 is not to build anything aside from TB. You can really destroy everything easily, you don’t really need to do naval invasions and can’t really do them even with BB early on, and it saves so much money for research and building war chest to build BB later.
I might have some insight about the turret problem on those battleships, when you were doing the upgrades you were showing us a new button that allowed you to keep the original turrets, could that have been the cause??
I can't help but feel the AI has done a 180 from putting all the armor on the turrets and none on the hull to all the armor on the hull and none on the turrets. Least that seems to be the case with the Italian cruisers given how much their turrets pop.
Peace with Italy! 12:51: Die Presse: Wein MDCCCXCIX, 9 November 1899 The Repubblica Italiana has proposed a settlement of the Balkan War they lost, along with their Monarchy. They offered an indemnity of $1,976 million. The Großadmiral, noted for his tireless advocation of peace once Montenegro was taken away from Italy, thus driving them out of the Balkans, now insisted that to avoid a repeat of the war it would be necessary for the Österreichisch-Ungarische Monarchie to take the east African provinces of Italian Somaliland, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, as well as the Marina Militare’s two San Pietro Alcantar class Corazzate di prima classe, the Venere Armata and Santissimo Crocelisso and the San Giovanni class Incrociatore corazzato Pace, a natural peace offering. Though reluctant to make such concessions, the Democrazia Cristiana was forced by their junior partners, the Partito Liberale Italiano, to give in, obtain peace, reduce the monetary outlay to just a war indemnity of $795 million with no other reparations, and get on with building a republic in Italy.

Bureau of Construction and Repair, Design Division: Bureau Report: 15-Nov-1899
Breift: The San Pietro Alcantar 1999 refit will cover two battleships taken in the peace treaty from Italy and originally designed to a target displacement of 10,900 tons and a top speed of 15.1 knots.
Nice grab. How about a campaign as the Greeks as they try to rebuild Alexander’s empire.

Battle of the Gulf of Libya 00:20:
Die Presse: Wein
MDCCCXCIX, 10 September 1899
The Viper class Torpedoboot Viper T-16 and the Python class Torpedoboot Python T-6, from the Cattaro Marinestation, joined the Python class Torpedoboote Python T-8 and Python T-11, from the Spalato Marinestation, on a deep commerce denial mission to the Gulf of Libya.

28:23 in your economy comparison you should also focus on your current economic growth compared to other nations....
Possibly, I’ve sent the save file to the author of TAF :)
I can't help but feel the AI has done a 180 from putting all the armor on the turrets and none on the hull to all the armor on the hull and none on the turrets. Least that seems to be the case with the Italian cruisers given how much their turrets pop.
Peace with Italy! 12:51:

MDCCCXCIX, 9 November 1899
The Repubblica Italiana has proposed a settlement of the Balkan War they lost, along with their Monarchy.
You forgot to put citadel layers on the refit Cardinals.
Next you shall Design a small but FAST Raider. If you go to war with Britian you have sind their Trade vessels.
