Wow, you'd think with not just one, but two intakes combined with a twin turbo forced induction setup, that you'd see some really nice gains. The gains were definitely noticeable by only dropping in dual K&N filters into my stock Q50 3.7 at the time. The gains were very noticeable, in fact very impressive feeling after having my custom twin Optimus long tube cold air intakes installed. The EcuTek tune shortly after improved the power even more. That's just with a naturally aspirated V6. Forced induction is supposed to respond much better to mods than NA does. I'm shocked it doesn't here though. I'd never believe it if I hadn't seen a bunch of your videos before. I wonder why this is?
Please keep in mind they did not put AMS intakes up against these others. And what AMS does differently then these other manufacturers is they re-use and engineered their intake around using the stock MAF housing and location. Additionally, most stock ECU’s require a red lash of some sort for performance changes to be truly beneficial. Food for though.
Totally feel you on this one, I have a small RUclips channel with content towards the G37 platform. I’ve said the same thing but am exhaust instead in an intake. I went for k&n drop ins and mishimoto silicone tubes to stillen gen 2 intakes. I felt no difference what so ever and quite frankly I like the look of the mishimoto tubes a lot better.
What about changing the cheap stock air filters and replace them high flow dry air filters? I did notice a better response in 2010 G37XS Sedan. I also added the Hikeitusa Performance Controller. It really improved the Throttle Response.
You can always go with a better panel filter as long as it's dry flow but it doesn't really deal with any extra performance. And those performance controllers just make the gas pedal more reactive very much like a pedal Commander
I understand what you're explaining well. My question is have you heard any testing of the air intake setup that infiniti acutely sells through their dealerships. I was thinking exhaust also, instead of the air intake my other question is who's exhaust setup sounds great when hit add apposed to just loud all the time? I'm older but love the rumble when stepped on like my scat pack does, just want that in my 2018 Q60 red sport 400. Thanks
The whole point of the CAI is to scavenge cooler air which is denser (more O2 per cfm) and to flow better. But as you said more factors need to be considered. Mass of the intake "charge", its velocity etc.. a shorter intake may cause a lot of drivability problems. Also, testing with the hood up voids real world application data IMHO. I was a bata tester for the VF eng Miata supercharger, and have first hand knowledge of this stuff. Infiniti has a engineering and budget resources far beyond what many of these smaller aftermarket companies do. The stock intake scavenges "cold" air well AND flows well. Let alone establishing correct data via the MAF to the ECU. Bottom line Boost in Motion is correct. Stick with the OEM intake, and just use a Wix air filter (not a K&N).
Concept z tests were on a stock car. Most likely any car with a tune or a JB1/4 would benefit from a intake. I have jb1+3 and a stillen cat back. Had issues with stillen intakes, changed them to BMS intakes and no Issues. Actually my car drives better with BMS than stock, better throttle response and nice turbo sound. Just sharing my experience.
PR M5 oh that's pretty clausable. if you looked at the video the mass air flow tube is smaller than stock which definitely throws off the AFR readings.. But gains that are done are usually done on stock form. If you put in cams long tube headers. But remember mods are to improve what the OEM spec is. So based on that comparison OEM outperforms anything else. Also just because something feels better doesn't mean it is better. If you had the time put the stock intake back on and see if you feel a difference?
The one negative thing about bms is that their filters are oiled filters, so over time the maf will get clogged with oil and cause issues in the future
Intakes have always been about enhancing engine sound for me, never for performance. I would hope that people understand aftermarket intakes aren’t for providing a noticeable gain in power and in most instances will slightly decrease power over certain RPM ranges. Buy it for sound alone - and usually for NA cars since a turbo muffles most of an engine’s induction sound. :)
Sure, if your previous air filter was older or dirty you'd notice a bit of a difference. A 8hp gain would be optimistic, but a 15bhp gain is completely unrealistic.
Michael the y-pipe I don't know if I gained anything necessarily. Because I haven't Dynoed the car but what I would recommend is do a catback exhaust. Reason being there are plenty of videos and proving Gaines untuned. 20-30whp untuned No check engine lights or issues with that.
Heya Boost! Sorry for commenting on an old video but I wonder if you have any updated thoughts on intakes (since some new stuff has apparently hit the streets since you recorded this). I have a 2019 Q60 RS and am thinking about the AFE Power Takeda Stage 2 system to complement my AFE lower down pipes and, eventually, a tune. Thanks for all the great info, Bro' Cheers!
K&N is the best filter. Goes right in the stock location, it's a replacement for the stock OEM filter. Anything else is a waste of money. Want more air flow, change the tubing and proper heat-shielding. Heat is the #1 Power killer, focus on that instead. That is what I am doing with my Q60 RS... killing it!
K&N's are garbage. I remember one was tested for flow on a Porsche 928 forum, and it flowed LESS than the stock paper filter. It also doesnt filter for shit and lets a lot more dirt into your engine, not to mention the oil can foul your MAF sensor.
So I was thinking about getting Takeda air intake what are you takes on that it's a Japan made and the Q50 is a Japan car correct will I gain horsepower on that system
