      Hi John, So sorry to hear about your dad. Your comment was the best one here and really touched my heart. I was fortunate enough to have my dad around for most of my life, and I learn so much from him. My wife and I never had children. If you ever need advice on anything from a 62 year old fart like me just comment back and I will get it via email and respond. There is a group of old people who call themselves “The Old Coots”. They set up a booth at farmers markets with a sign that says “Free advice. It may be bad advice, but at least it’s free.” 🙂.

    I am embarrassed to say, I have never figured out what that clip is for. I have worked on mowers for quite a long time and really haven't given it much thought. When I replace a starter cord, I never replace that clip. Generally no one folds their handle unless it's going to the repair shop. I never stop learning. Awesome video and worth at least 2 beers.

    That dual function of the safety bail (interrupting the ignition and allowing the flywheel brake to engage) is why, when I finish using my push mower, I release that bail part way, until the ignition goes off, then allow the engine to come to a stop without abruptly applying the flywheel brake. Seems to me that's easier on the engine.
    And we all love April, too!

For me, the first thing I do with my new mower is remove the brake and kill switch hardware and mount an external stop switch so that the mower doesn't stop every time I need to let go of the handle to pickup or move something in the yard then need to restart it. what a pain.

    UK - I have 4 mowers with folding handles and none have this clip. However, only one has a folding handle mechanism that lets the rope retract (full handle versus half handle folding) and there is no brake, opening the handle you just have to let it turn the crank over slowly to full extension. The mower would only run if the bar was held in too so it cannot start. But, I would look to install something on that one mower so I don't have to go through the problem of having to get the rope back out each folding. People suggest tying a knot, would there be an occasion a knot needs undone and after time and rope hardening that little sucker will be a ball ache to undo for whatever reason.

I have no idea like why they don't put it on their starter ropes anymore but, not gonna lie I really like the metal clip on the starter ropes because it's much faster than having to pull the starter handle onto the pull rope guide.

    The clip on my lawn mower is too tight and stops the rope from going in and prevents me from starting the mower. Thanks for this! I don't know how it got like that, but from what you did I think the sides just needs pried apart to make it a little looser.

  • @100vg
    @100vg Год назад +1

    If the clip is lost or doesn't come with a replacement rope and you don't have it anymore, you can use a Heavy Duty Vinyl Cable Tie/Tie Wrap there that is wide enough to have a big enough locking head (that the other end goes into to lock it closed tight) to make the rope stop being sucked into the rope hole where the Cable/Tie Wrap is located. That way you won't lose any rope length. And it's much easier than dissembling, tying the knot, and reassembling. Bags of them are cheap enough and I keep a selection of sizes and length for various applications. I keep one with the loop open just enough to easily pass over the gas arm to lock the engine running if I have to leave it sitting for something so I don't have to start the engine again. I also disable the seat shut-off switch on my riding mowers to keep the engine running, but I don't have pets or kids or anyone else around to worry about while I'm mowing, but that's me. Do as you must or think best.

      I use the wire tie to hold the blade brake open. That way I can leave the mower running rather than have to re-start it every 10 seconds. Slide the wire tie off to engage the engine stall brake. (Don't want to have an expensive adjustable throttle or one of those oh-so-dangerous plug shorting tabs- you need a government approved complicated flywheel brakes) use a wire tie to hold the stall bail back and the mower will be just like a Real Mower of 25 years ago!

    I've never had a clip on mine, it's an early nineties, self-propelled, brand name is gone but it's an MTD made mower. I've never folded it for storage. It still runs well. I've replaced drive belts, springs, etc., as they've worn out. Periodic oil changes, not as often as I should, has a 5hp B&S engine. It's around forty years old now and has done very well. Not used as often now, but it starts and runs when called upon. It's outlasted Honda's, Toro's, I bought it when it was all I could afford back then. Because of that mower, I have a strong disdain for overpriced, name brand mowers that, these days, are high-priced crap.

The handle mount on the deck has lips that it slips into on all those I have to prevent the the handle from moving forward. I tend to buy brand name high end mowers. I also tighten the wingnuts up as tight as they will go without stripping them out. I hate a sloppy handle it's dangerous and ruins push effectiveness especially over uneven terrain or up hills . The last thing I need is to kneecap myself going up a hill or take my face off as I slip in the grass as I go uphill. Because the handle decides to fold forward.

    I thought it was there because the spring doesn't need as much tension as you aren't retracting the full rope. allowing it all the way in without enough spring tension will also allow slack in the spool and it could get jammed. If allowed all the way in the rope could also exceed the spool size and jam.

    I’m about 90% sure my toro I bought last year doesn’t have one of those clips. I don’t even think the hole for the rope is small enough that a clip would stop the rope. I’ll have to look when I get it back out for the first mow of the year soon.

    When you FOLD the HANDLE of the mower at the end of the season. Back in the past the starter rope was at the top of the engine. The brake required a longer rope, and the notch. I've found in my years. Yes I removed the brake which the stop had to be a screw driver to ground out the plug. But I usually ran empty of fuel any way.
