  • Huge ramp up of my Urban Worm Bag production! 6000 compost worms are devouring food scraps & cardboard boxes at a record pace as I plan to harvest every 30 days while feeding these hungry worms 3 times a month!
    After a huge 14.5 pound harvest last week we offer our red wigglers & blue compost worms a huge feeding & plenty of bedding to fill this Urban Worm Bag back up. In this video we'll also mix up the contents of the bin to allow any worms trapped in the layers to move around freely & dig up any leftovers from our last feeding 12 days ago. We'll also check up on the unique cross hatched bedding my son ‪@LaurenandPJsAdventures‬ gave me to compost.
    Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 3 worm composing bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 3 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / vermicompostlearnbydoing

    Just a thought but, it occurs to me that maybe you should harvest first before you agitate the bin and drive the worms down into the harvest zone?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  10 месяцев назад +1

      Great point! For this bin I feed them 2 days prior to harvest to get them to try to come up to the top. So 2 days later I harvest from the bottom, and take those castings and agitate them to drive any left over worms out of the harvest back into the bin like I did in this video: ruclips.net/video/xBLZGu_gZGo/видео.html I may need to feed 3-4 days prior so they aren't still fleeing the agitation I do when I'm feeding. There were a lot of worms in the harvest so I think the moisture was pretty high down low and they may have been fleeing the heat at the top as well. Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    15 lbs. a month would be a great amount of castings plus your other bins. Do you think you can collect over 300 pounds total between all of the bins? Nice feeding Patrick😁🪱🪱

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  10 месяцев назад +1

      That is a great question Rick! 350 pounds sound like a good conservative average for all of my bins if this UWB keeps up with 15 pounds a month. The VermiHut is pretty consistent at 10 pounds every 60 days, the Tiny Worm Bin is good for about 6-8 pounds every 5 months and my Outdoor Bin is good for at least 10 pounds a month...more if I need it. It's a pretty amazing amount now that you have me thinking about it!! Thanks for watching and sparking a fun calculation to add up!!🪱🪱🪱

      The best thing to do if your bin is overheating due to the food heating up is to skip a feeding, feed less food and add more bedding. If the heat is from the worm bin being outside then you can do what I do and add some frozen water bottles each morning and try to find a very shady spot for your bin. I live in Florida, USA and it stays pretty warm here for about 7 months out of the yeas. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch!!🪱🪱🪱

    Nice work with the worms but in all your videos you only wear one glove. What's up with that? Do you only wear one shoe too?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  10 месяцев назад

      😂🤣😂 Believe it or not there is a method to my madness! I just use a glove on my right hand because that’s the hand that typically digs into the bin & my dirty finger nails don’t look very good on camera to me. I usually only hold things or pick up things with my left hand so no need for a glove as the finger nails stay clean on that hand. I also figured I'd save more gloves that way! I have no issues getting my bare hands into the worm bin when I'm not filming, it is just for aesthetics on videos!! Great question, I know it looks odd to wear just one when my left hand gets dirty anyway😂 Great question, It's been a while since I addressed it in a video so probably time to mention it agin!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and ask a great question in a fun way!!🪱🪱🪱

  • @NanasWorms

    That's great that your downward migration from the tray of castings worked even in the UWB, Patrick. That's creative thinking to use the tray of one system to help your other! One observation is I do think you are feeding this system more than you fed your VermiHut, even though you thought both had about 6000 worms at one time. I think the surface area of the UWB is conducive to larger feedings. Also, you need the moisture in that system from the larger feedings. The worms look like they will have no problem rising to the challenge and gobbling up anything you can give them.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  10 месяцев назад +2

      Between me and our 3 boys, Autumn deserves hazardous duty, danger, and any kind of extra pay out there!! 😂🤣😂 This bin is a tough one for me to guesstimate my worms in. I started with 2100 and eventually put in a total of 3000 over the first 4 months and I'm just starting month nine, so realistically I could have as much as 10k in here by now! I'm not sure how much it's caring capacity is. The VermiHut I have more confidence in since I counted out a harvest tray one time, but this one is so huge compared to that! Right now I'm so used to running this in the summer with our extreme humidity and the sweaty frozen water bottles adding water as well, but when things start to cool off in November, I'll probably need to go back to the spray bottle to add some moisture, especially if I keep up these big bedding & food scrap feedings! Thanks for all your support and insight Sandra!! Have a great week!!🪱🪱🪱

    Even on the hottest days here in New Jersey I never really pay much attention to the possibility of my worm bins heating up. Considering that my systems are mostly bins that are far smaller than your large CFT bag, I wonder if I should be more mindful of temperature (??). With thermometers, ice bottles, etc., you certainly make it into a priority - but considering that you're in a tropical environment, I suppose it kinda makes a lot more sense for you to be mindful of heat in your bag 👍🏻

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  10 месяцев назад +2

      I think your basement wormery is the way to go! If Autumn would let me have this bin inside I think a lot of my heat issues would disappear. I'm still working on her, especially since all three of our boys have moved out and I have 3 potential wormeries!!! Unfortunately, even with the blind I have put up, this bin gets heated up in the afternoon from being on the south west side of our house (the only place I can put it). I've seen 105℉ on one of my temp sensors🥵 when I forgot the frozen water bottles one time!! Just this morning I checked on the worms to add more frozen water bottles and a bunch of them had come up through all that dry bedding to huddle underneath the condensation and coolness of the thawed out previous water bottles with some climbing the walls as well. The tropical environment definitely creates some unique issues for outdoor worm bins! I need to get some ANC's!!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch AV!!🪱🪱🪱

    This is what I am discovering about my big outdoor composters, that the size of a composter really ramps up production! Just harvested part of the one I just harvested last in July! About 30 gallons worth. I can hardly keep up with making shredded cardboard. I need a whole day to get ahead on that now. It should slow down once winter arrives. I will be ready for a rest! 😂🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱 But separating the worms out on this scale is a pain. I decided to do a combination of baiting them out and a downward migration from light and agitation into casting storage rather than sifting at first. Seems to work. Easier on the worms and myself. I may sift as needed later down the production.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  10 месяцев назад +1

      Oh wow, you will definitely need a winter's rest after tending to your worm farm!! I think I'm discovering what you're experiencing with regard to sifting on a larger scale...it's just not worth the time. I like your idea of just doing the agitation/light method and baiting out of storage...So much easier for me and the worms!! • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  9 месяцев назад

      White paper with ink is just fine for the worms. inks in the US and most of the world are soy based. They did away with heavy metals and toxic inks in the 1970's from the research I could find. White paper does tend to mat down so mix it well with cardboard shreds and you will be just fine. That is so great your school is building worm farms to help dispose of waste!!
