"End Of The Line" was also a big hit on their first album, but Roy Orbison passed away before they made the video, and they paid homage to him by having his photo and a rocking chair with his guitar in the video. You two would definitely love that video, and I would love to see you react to it.

Roy Orbison was so well respected, and his singing loved my fellow musicians it is fun to watch the reactions of other talented musicians when they perform beside or with him. One of the best ones my mind goes to is when Roy recorded with Barry Gibb and the Gatlin Brothers on their recording of "Indian Summer".

The Travelling Wilburys was a result of George Harrison and Jeff Lynne having dinner together at George's house. George light heartedly suggested that they should form a band. Jeff said who would you have in it? Then it went back and forth with each of them suggesting some of their favourites. Jeff thought no more about until George phoned him the following day to say he he been in touch with them all and everybody had said "yes". Jeff was flabbergasted!

The Traveling Wilburys were a rock supergroup from 1988, made up of Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. Also joining them is Jim Keltner who is a well-known session drummer. They had a lot of great songs such as "End Of The Line", "Heading For The Light", "Inside Out", "Tweeter & The Monkey Man", "Dirty World", "Last Night", "She's My Baby", "Rattled", "Nobody's Child", "Congratulations" etc. Sadly only 2 guys are now left from this group (Bob Dylan & Jeff Lynne).

This was the only Traveling Wilburys video to feature Roy Orbison. Before filming the second video "End of the Line" he died unexpectedly of a heart attack. He did not live to see the success of his solo album "Mystery Girl", which was created at the same time. A very nice song by the Wilburys is Roy's solo number "not alone anymore". The next to die was George Harisson and a few years ago Tom Petty. Only Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne are still alive.

George Harrison had written the basics of this song and, over a meal, asked Jeff Lynne to help with the recording and Roy Orbison to join them. They couldn’t book a recording studio but they knew Bob Dylan had one set up in his garage so they went over there, but George had left his guitar at Tom Petty’s place so swung by there on the way.
That’s roughly how they started collaborating, as I understand.

After Roy passed away, there was a lot of speculation that Del Shannon might replace him although Del himself said “It’s a nice rumor, and I do know Jeff, Tom and George quite well, but it hasn’t been mentioned to me at all, not even hinted. And it’s certainly not my business to bring it up with them. But it seems the more I deny it, the more people think I’m going to be in it.” His similar falsetto style would have been a great addition to the band. Sadly, later in life, Del took his own life after years of mental health issues. Not many of the greats left...
If you like the tragic falsetto style of Roy Orbison (and you clearly do!), you should definitely check out Del Shannon.
