It's funny that you mention Elvis. A reporter once asked Elvis what it was like to have the greatest voice in music. Elvis replied,"You need to ask that question to Roy Orbison"
Actually George got everybody together because he needed a song to be on the B-side of his latest single. But when people at the record company heard the song they said it's to good to simply be a flipside, it should be it's own hit single. So they decided to do a whole album together. Fortunately for us, the fans, they did.
The conception of the band goes back further than that. In 1986 George hired Jeff to produce his album, Cloud 9, and the two legends immediately became best friends, what with Jeff actually moving into George and Olivia's house. While producing Cloud 9 George proposed to Jeff that they start their own band. Jeff said great, who would you like to be in it with us? George named Bob Dylan, and asked Jeff who he'd want in it. Jeff replied, Roy Orbison. Then they agreed that Tom Petty should join, too.
You got that right it’s sad Roy died, just when he was making a comeback too just think of what they could have produced only 2 of them left now Bob and Jeff, there is one other singer who could have fitted in with them and that would have been Gerry Rafferty sadly he’s gone too.
Three friends George, Jeff and Roy were having dinner. George's own words, Jeff offered to help with the B side, Roy asked if he could tag along, they had to stop by Tom's to pick up a guitar, when they got to Tom's and Tom heard what they were doing, Bob has a studio in his house. The rest is history.
Got to give a shout out for Jim Keltner on drums, such a great drummer, has played with everyone who's anyone. Does just what's needed for the song, never too showy, just class.
Which is how the band came together, George needed help on a b side for a solo album and started calling up his friends. his friends just happen to be these guys lol
They were just a bunch of guys, knowing and admiring eachother, who became a group by accident, more or less. Essentially because George Harrison didn't like touring.
You will hear George's wonderful voice showcased in the Beatles tunes "Here Comes the Sun," "Something," and "For You Blue," among others. All four of the Beatles had solid rock 'n' roll voices.
George sang lead on 31 Beatles songs....and....in the Beatles first American concert, George lead off with Roll Over Beethoven. Ringo too was a good singer - listen to the last song on the White Album, Goodnight. John wrote it as a lullaby for Julian, but on the album he wanted Ringo to sing it, which he does really well
A reporter once asked Keith Richards what the biggest difference between the Stones and The Beatles was. He said "we only have one singer; they have 4."
@@ITILII You're right about Ringo, apart from 'Good night' I like a lot a couple more from him 'I'll Still Love You' and his tribute to George 'Never Without You', those three have been in my heart for so long.
The Greatest rock super group ever. And yes, they were just doing it for the music, for the fun of collaborating on writing good songs and playing together. Their most brilliant move was including Roy Orbison.
Yet, remarkably, they had him sing only ONE song solo while Dylan sings several as the lead. Seems astoundingly daft to have Orbison in your group and hardly hear him doing what he did so famously well.
@@steeltrap3800 Bob was featured on the second album in many songs because Roy had passed. The first album, as far as I have heard, did a good job of balancing who sang the most on each track. But I would always make sure to put Bob and Tom at the bottom of the group when it comes to lead vocals for sure. Their voices are truly not made for leads.

Harrison had many solo hits such as My Sweet Lord, Bangla Desh, Blow Away From, Got My Mind Set On You, when we was fab, Isn't It A Pity, Give Me Love, etc RIP Roy, George, Tom
Roy Orbison was from Wink, Texas, thereby the accent haha. His life was full of trgedy but he had the voice of an angel. I was born in '53 & my, mom kept the radio on all day to the local rock station. Roy & Elvis made an impression on me at a very young age. I love the Willbury's, such distintive voices.

I remember when this album came out George did an interview, and I can't recall his exact words, but he said he really enjoyed making this album because it was the first one where he wasn't concerned what anyone else would think about it, like Bob has done his whole career.
Hi Beth! Enjoyed your reaction and comments! Not sure if you're aware, but George Harrison was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. His fellow Traveling Wilburys bandmates Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne inducted him. His widow, Olivia and there only son, Dhani accepted the award. Then Petty, Lynne, Dhani, Steve Winwood and Prince performed George's song While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Would love to see you react to this amazing performance. It is just remarkable! Thanks!
Love it!! I never get tired of this song! 5 absolute legends, egos checked at the door, making good ole rock 'n' roll! This was not entirely an 'intentional' group. George had wanted some 'friends' to sing backup for a b-side to a single, which was this song. He was already working with Jeff Lynne, who was producing his solo record, and they both mentioned names of whom should joint them. Lynne's 'hero' was Orbison, Harrison really admired Dylan. Harrison & Petty became friends around this time, so he jointed the mix. George's record company thought the song too good to just be a b-side, so they got together at Dave Stewart's house (of the Eurythmics) to write and record. Apparently, Tom Petty was giddy as a schoolboy saying 'We got Roy Orbison in our band!!!' There is a great 1/2 hour video on the formation of the band and the songs. I was born in 1961 and all of these guys have been my musical heroes throughout my entire life. When I first heard this, and saw the video, I was literally shedding tears of joy. Such a wonderful experience to happen for them and their fans. They all got along great from what I understand. They had so much respect for each other that they were happy that when they got together it was so much more than they had ever even expected it to be.
Hello Beth, the strength of the team is coordination and complementing each other. It is much better when they sing together. The voices are in harmony. They have a natural, gentle and lovely voice.
Great reaction video! I love the Traveling Wilburys. Every one of them has such an iconic voice. Would you ever consider reacting to the duet of Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks in "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around?"
Thanks, Beth! this was, in IMHO, the best "super-group" evah! this song features George & Roy, but there are quite a few others... each of these superstars were incredibly generous in sharing the spotlight... I hope you listen to more of them! appreciate your reaction on this one...(p.s. Jeff Lynne - such a key member, who never got enough credit for his vocals.. in addition to his songwriting!) - Finally, it's so clear how much they enjoyed each other... (oh, wait.. and drummer Jim Keltner!.. who was offered a credit and declined.. he was integral to their sound!)
When Bono recorded She's a Mystery to Me with Roy he was shocked, because he whispered into the microphone rather than sang. Bono wrote the song for Roy.
So sad that only Dylan and Lynn are left. There's actually a video that came with a Wilburys CD in which the members explain the origin story of the band. Bottom line: it wasn't planned, but rather grew organically out of some friendly jam sessions, in which one friend brought another and so on.
There’s a great Traveling Wilbury’s documentary 0n RUclips and it’s awesome…get to see them create each song and they were all very good friends…especially Tom, Jeff and George…Tom told stories about them staying up nights constantly just playing ukuleles
Roy O’ was from Texas, the oldest, and died a few months after the TW release, with his own album following. Bob D’ is from Minnesota, yet based in New York. Tom P’ was from Florida, lived in California mist of his life. Jeff L’ from Near Birmingham UK George H’ from old Liddy-pool; he would have been 80 years the other day. Jim K’ is the drummer, where do drummers originate-? Your concern for voice and accent.
Great video as usual Beth. I think they all knew within themselves that the potential for greatness was there with all the talent right there. Roy's vocal on this track is my favorite.
The Traveling Wilburys were a combination of some of rock & folk's greatest talents all put together (as friends and admirers of each others accomplishments) and what came out was pure %101 talent. When you are in a happy place with friends you care about and admire - this is what you can accomplish!
Great reaction video, as always! Love how you ended the reaction because I agree wholeheartedly. If you want to listen to Roy Orbison by himself, may I recommend "Running Scared" for a future reaction video? I think it really shows the breadth of his singing ability. I know it's from the era of Doo Wop (and the early days of Rock and Roll), but his voice sounds almost operatic in the song, especially at the end.
All absolute LEGENDS: Bob, George, Jeff, Roy, Tom and backed by another Legend, on drum:Jim Keltner......"Roy Orbison is the best singer I've ever heard!" - Elvis Presley
Loved this one Beth, loved the TWs, and its one enormous musical jamming session, and l think it’s that hotch-potch vocal sounds that makes them work. And yes, l think they must have had an absolute ball. So so sad there’s only two of them left.
Loved this band so much. It did start as kind of a goof arranged by Jeff Lynne, because they all knew each other and go on well. He was on the Adam Carrolla podcast for a long interview maybe a year ago.
To me what makes this song is that contrast between the angelic voice of Orbison and that rough, scraped out of the gutter sound of Petty/Dylan harmonizing right after. It just works.
You said exactly what I tried to say on your take on "end of the line". I just watched your video, and the first I have watched of yours, and I commented they got together to have fun. I'm glad you see that.
This was a tremendous reaction, young Lady. Would you please go into more detail about the Swami of Wink, Texas, Roy Orbison. I think he wrote rock operettas, and his voice was from another world. Thank you for your unique take on the greats of music.
They were all great friends. If you watch the documentary about the group that really comes across. All legends in their own right and awesome as a combo.
Its raw, or organic, because these guys did this entirely on their own. No corporate stooges, execs, etc. All on their own, purely raw, organic and out of the utmost love, admiration and respect for each other and all they brought to the world of music, and of course, just how much joy & fun the got from each other and the experience as a whole. Its also a direct product of their era, the time when music was ENTIRELY about and based on the genuine talent and abilities of musicians, and not any importance or focus was ever on "performance/showmanship", looks, extra stuff like lighting and stage props, or even how they dressed. None of that stuff mattered back then. But by 1980, the massive shift into showmanship, looks, outfits, etc being emphasize over talent and ability went into full force. By 1990, we wound up almost entirely based on that instead of the stuff that matters, which is again, talent, ability and passion. And that's how we got to where we are now, where everything is quite literally, "Overproduced, Commercialized", as is said in the song at hand. That's why its so rare for so many of us to find any music and musicians we truly like/love and enjoy now. That said, there often is one or two songs from bands or musicians in the modern era that stand out from the rest, and become long-standing favorites. Speaking of such... I recommend doing a reaction and vocal analysis of Seal - A Kiss From a Rose. I think it'd also be kind of interesting to hear a vocal coach/expert do a analysis of Akon's vocals. From say, Lonely, to start, to Hold My Hand, which he did with Michael Jackson shortly before MJ passed.
Wonderful thoughts on this album and you are right they all were best of friends! I wonder, have you listened to Georges early solo album, All things must pass? it is pure spiritual joy to listen to, so many wonderful songs!
They actually were great friends! Love them all! George was lead singer of many Beatles songs, dig a little more, you will find out how Great he is! Love!
“Here Comes The Sun” And “Something” ( B side of “Come Together “ if you can fathom that after listening, two songs of that caliber..) The Beatles, George Harrison lead vocals on both. Both are stunning
They knew it was filled with imperfections. In fact they named the band after that fact. They said “if something is imperfect “we’ll bury it in the mix”. Thus naming The “traveling’we’ll Bury’s”.
I am in my seventies, and George and Ringo were my faves of the fab four. I loved the Travelling Wilburys. Love rock, and some of every other genre. I am a fantastic dancer, but refused to become famous for all of my artistic skills. I value my freedom.
Surprises me how many forget about Jim Keltner on the drums, other than some back up vocals he is the quiet Wilbury brother. One of the greatest Sessional Drummers in the world who has played with many big names, amongst them predominately with the Beetles. Both solo and main group albums. He was often found backing up Ringo on drums, or filling in for Ringo if he couldn't be there for whatever reason. Ringo also did a lot of solo work later in life and dragged Jim around on the drums to help out.
George Harrison had a great capacity for friendship. George became a great fan of the ukulele. He insisted his musical friends have one and hang out with him and play tunes. Tom Petty said George's car trunk (or boot) was full of ukuleles and he would give them out at get togethers. George was a nice man.
From the documentaries that I have seen on the Wilburys, they became so close as friends that they referrer to each other as "brothers". Roy's passing was devastating to them, but they did record a follow-up album. Unfortunately, only Bob, and Jeff are the last of the living Wilburys. 😢😢 They were truly superb!
That was why The Beatles were as great as they were; they had the most multitalented musicians, singers and composers. Never equalled, never surpassed.
Straight up country on the guitars, and it’s Roy and Bob who grasp the fact it’s a lullaby, rocking chair, soothing the baby, which matches the message, Handle With Care, a lullaby for adults.
love the story that they all were familiar with each other and had been helping bit by bit, but it gelled one night when by happenstance two were co-producing, wanted an instrument of a third, and they were contacted by a fourth that day who wanted to go see Orbison playing. so four of them went to see Roy. When he asked what they were up to, I think it was Dylan who joked "we're putting a band together. want to be in it?" - "sure"- on the drive back Harrison was in the back seat, very quiet, occasionally repeating "I'm going to be in a band with Roy Orbison". Heard this back in '90... so fuzzy on exact order of the 1-2-3-4...
Regarding regions: Orbison was a small-town Texan, so his natural speaking voice was closed-mouth, like the characters in King of the Hill; he learned to sing that way to hit high notes. Petty was from Gainesville FL, a Southern drawl which comes out in his music. Bob Dylan was Minnesotan but his singing voice is mostly an affect. Lynn and Harrison were of course English, not sure how their regional accents impacted their singing voices.
It's funny that you mention Elvis. A reporter once asked Elvis what it was like to have the greatest voice in music. Elvis replied,"You need to ask that question to Roy Orbison"
So true, you hear Elvis trying to capture some of that Orbison sound some songs.
❤
Roy had a voice that simply could stun even the best singer out there.
That's a re re purposed quote from a Jimi Hendrix interview. Hendrix's actual answer was, "You'll have to ask Phil Keaggy."

All absolute LEGENDS: Bob, George, Jeff, Roy, Tom and backed by another Legend, on drum:Jim Keltner......"Roy Orbison is the best singer I've ever heard!" - Elvis Presley
I absolutely love hearing your observations, I learn stuff and like how you put things.
Great reaction on excellent timeless great music ❤
To me what makes this song is that contrast between the angelic voice of Orbison and that rough, scraped out of the gutter sound of Petty/Dylan harmonizing right after. It just works.
You gotta just love these guys...pure talent on a whole different level. Three of them gone way too soon still hurts. Hi from Wisconsin 🍺
Yes, they were all friends of George and they recorded this at Dylan’s home studio for a B side. But, it grew into an album.
Great analogy and review Beth, keep rockin!!!
Talented musos jamming and enjoying themselves they were fantastic, great pity so many are no longer with us.
I'm 81, and believe me, . . . never stop searching, there is some great music out there!
I hope you got clean and centered yourself. Some of us have been there. Keep fighting.
Whether you like the music itself or not (i do), its amazing that this group existed.
I haven't listen to this song in a long time I forgot how good it is. Nothing fancy, good vocals, great vibe...
😂🤣😅 Seal and Akon 😆 🤣 😂
Wonderful thoughts on this album and you are right they all were best of friends! I wonder, have you listened to Georges early solo album, All things must pass? it is pure spiritual joy to listen to, so many wonderful songs!
this is 5 super stars that are just getting together having fun and it could not sound better the fact they shared it is amazing
Bless you for saying that George is a good singer. I agree ♥️
Una época de oro exelente Beth👏👏🍀🍀
They actually were great friends! Love them all!
George was lead singer of many Beatles songs, dig a little more, you will find out how Great he is! Love!
Came here to say this - Paul and John wrote heaps but George often got the singing duties. Very much underrated as a pop singer.
“Here Comes The Sun”
And
“Something”
( B side of “Come Together “ if you can fathom that after listening, two songs of that caliber..)
The Beatles,
George Harrison lead vocals on both.
Both are stunning
They knew it was filled with imperfections. In fact they named the band after that fact. They said “if something is imperfect “we’ll bury it in the mix”. Thus naming The “traveling’we’ll Bury’s”.
It's "wheelbarrows", mate, the first suggestion was "The Trundling Wheelbarrows"
CLASSIC! ICONIC! EPIC!
I am in my seventies, and George and Ringo were my faves of the fab four. I loved the Travelling Wilburys. Love rock, and some of every other genre. I am a fantastic dancer, but refused to become famous for all of my artistic skills. I value my freedom.
I love this collab. Most of my 60s heroes. They make me so happy.
Great group they sang a beautiful cover of runaway
George Harrison had a great capacity for friendship. George became a great fan of the ukulele. He insisted his musical friends have one and hang out with him and play tunes. Tom Petty said George's car trunk (or boot) was full of ukuleles and he would give them out at get togethers. George was a nice man.
Except all the times he wasn't.
Elvis and Roy were contemporaries. Dylan's and Petty's voices are so similar.
George never looked more relaxed and happy than with this band
Well said. They were all already successful, they made this group and crushed it while having fun.
This album is fantastic!
THEY REALIZED THEIR SONGS IN ONE DAY......like a jam-session.....
❤❤❤ my favorite song ❤❤❤
The superest of the super groups! Thank you Beth!
George was from Liverpool. There is quite a lot of the accent coming thru- more than most of his songs- care, there, been.
George has sang many great songs. He’s a Beatle! It’s inherent.
Organic is a great way to describe their music.
You need to check out End of The Line. They did it after Roy passed and they included his voice and guitar in the video.❤
It is the ultimate super group, there will never be one like it again! A rock'n'roll, a Beatle, A poet, a rocker.
