You two should check out Eva Cassidy who did this song as well. Not to many people know of her. Eva passed away in 1996. One of my favorite songs of her’s is “People Get Ready. “ It was originally done by Curtis Mayfield.
I came here to make the same comment 💙 She has so many great songs! My favorites include her cover of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors " , and "Hallelujah I Just Love Him So "
A yoga guru with a magical voice. He always wants to manifest integrity, insight and compassion. And, certainly, his music chakra is open! Beautiful song, Thanx so much, Namaste
Eva Cassidy's cover is a treasure, must watch really. Sting cried... He got me thru some rough patches in my days, especially this song. Forever grateful Sting!! ❤️👍🏽

Guys, this is your THIRD time listening to Sting as he was lead singer in The Police through the late 70 and 80s. Arguably he’s become a huger star since he went solo and broke up the band. His songs like Russians, If You Love Somebody Set Them Free, Fragile, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You and Shape of My Hearts are must-hear tracks. As are Police songs like Roxanne, Don’t Stand So Close To Me, Message In A Bottle and So Lonely. Someone to dive deeper into in both solo and band form!
Oddly, after all these decades, I never noticed he began the song facing north. Then finished facing south as the sun set faster. Damn, that made me cry.
This song, poetically, is the love story of a farmer, a barley farmer, who recalls asking a woman to marry him by speaking of the promises he has made, "some that he broke," paraphrasing, but that this was one promise that he intended to keep, "...in the days still left..." or for the rest of his life. In a later verse he speaks of the present, "...see the children run as the sun goes down..." However, at the beginning and the end he mentions, "...you'll remember me..." and I take that to mean that after he has died, she can remember their years and times on their barley farm which was so golden and heavenly that even the sun with its golden brightness would be jealous. Its a lovely song, performed wonderfully. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Sting is a great musician and performed as a vocalist and arranger for the rock group, "The Police" and made his fortune during the 1980s. Like many artists who have found their success and finally make the artworks they prefer rather than the popular ones that make money, I believe this was one of Sting's sincere efforts at his own artistic desire. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Great song and great album. Sting was the lead singer of The Police. He was also an English teacher before getting into Rock. His solo career has been quite different from The Police, much more jazz influenced. Try "We'll be Together" as a follow up, or "Be Still my Beating Heart".
This was a genre I didn’t really listen to in the 90s as I was more into alternative and grunge as a teen, but I did own this album. Sting is a great lyricist. His song “When We Dance” is, in my humble opinion, perfection Edit: Yes, the instrument is a mandolin. Good ear! Same tuning as a violin, but double strings. I am a violin player and have messed around with the mandolin, but I’m not very good at it 😊
You guys know Sting! He was in the Police. You reacted to their "Every Breath You Take" and "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic". This is Sting having gone solo. He had none other than Branford Marsalis (from the first family of jazz from New Orleans) on sax in his band. His music had a jazz influence. Many great songs to react to. I think "Fields of Gold" is his most beautiful. I think Eva Cassidy did a cover of this. Sting is another artist that appeared at Live Aid.
Another great singer in the 80's was Steve Winwood. He was big! Jay and Amber, you'll love him. Some of his many hits are: "The Finer Things", " Back in the High Life Again", "While You See a Chance", " Valerie", "Roll With It", and " Higher Love". The great Chaka Khan sang female vocals on "Higher Love".
Sting was the lead singer, bassist and primary writer for The Police. Have you reacted to them yet? They have SO MANY hits. His first solo hit was "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" also check out "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You"
You have listened to Sting before. He was a member of the Police, and you watched a video of them singing "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic". Same lead singer. His music, once he went solo, was absolutely wonderful. Some of the albums that captured me were "The Dream of the Blue Turtles", "Nothing Like the Sun", Mercury Falling", etc....all incredible and filled with songs that speak to your soul.
You guys should react to Eva Cassidy’s version of this song. You’ve reacted to her before (somewhere over the rainbow) so you know her magnificent voice, just imagine it with these lyrics 💗 I think I’ve read that even Sting prefers her version.
Tim Rice, great lyricist, said the first time he heard this he thought Sting had discovered an old ancient song from hundreds of years ago. Sting himself went to the great record producer David Foster with a copy of Eva Cassidys version of his song and said you have to listen to this, it's the most soulful song you'll ever hear.
This song was from late in Sting’s popular period (mid-1990s), but he has been a giant in the music industry from late 1970s to today. He started with the Police and then went solo mid-1980s. His biggest other solo hits are Love is the Seventh Wave, Englishmen in New York, Desert Rose, Russians, Fragile, If I Ever Lose My Faith in You, They Dance Alone, and Brand New Day. His album Soul Cages was not popular, but it is a gem of an album about his personal life growing up - melancholy with a sea theme. It is well worth a listen. Cheers.
I didn't fall in love with Sting until this song, which I love so much I want it played at my funeral. This album "Ten Summoner's tales" was huge, then I started listening to his other albums, and then I became a Police Fan. The Police had a reunion tour in 2008, they had broken up in the 80s and didn't do anything new but did a tour. The concert was probably the only concert I attended where I knew the words to every song. Was incredible. I love Sting so much I saw him on his brand new day tour on each coast. Great artist. Glad you guys discovered him and this was your first reaction.
Sting is one the greatest musicians of all time with massive catalogue both as a solo artist and with his band the police. I'm seeing him live for the first time in feb can't wait
Michelle Kwan skated to this song after loosing the Gold Medal in the 2002 Olympics. It was heartbreaking, she had been favored and it was her last Olympics. She won everything possible in her sport except for the Olympics. She was nothing but class.
First thing that came to mind when I saw what song they were reacting to was...Michelle Kwan skating to this. I agree with you on all of your points. Michelle's skating to Sting's Field of Gold was absolutely mesmerizing! Sting's voice is so soft and smooth here and it was perfect for Michelle!
Yes! This song always reminds me of Michelle Kwans skate with tears in her eyes. So heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. And she was dressed in gold. Beautiful!
Sting’s solo albums and on tour has the best musicians in the world. A good friend of mine was a roadie and drum tech for Vinnie Colaiuta while he was Sting’s drummer. Then of course playing with The Police and the genius of Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland. There’s a lot to dig into with his catalog.
Fortress Around Your Heart is my favorite from Sting. Amazing lyrics and one of the best choruses you’ll ever hear. Almost nobody has reacted to it….perfect for RSR!!
So beautiful, have always loved this song...such beautiful word pictures. I really am walking in fields of barley and can even feel the warm sun on my arms.
Loved him in Dune. Sometimes I think it's a shame he didn't do more acting, but I'd rather listen to him sing so I don't mind that's what he focused on. :)
It's soooooo funny when you say "new artist", I know why, but it still cracks me up!!! 😂 Sting and The Police have been a staple throughout my life. You cannot go wrong - the list of songs is endless by Sting alone and then you add The Police and you have a plethora of unbelievable tracks to listen to. Oh my gosh, dig in and enjoy - Englishman in New York, If you Love Somebody Set Them Free, Fortress Around Your Heart, When We Dance, Murder by Numbers, Canary in a Coalmine, When the World is Running Down You Make the Best of What's Still Around, Driven to Tears, Synchronicity I and II , So Lonely ....... and on and on it goes. It's a great ride!!!!! I can still remember the very first time I heard Roxanne - good grief, I was babysitting, put the kids to bed and decided to turn on the stereo in the living room. Never heard them before, they had just hit North America that was 1978/9. And if you love Sting, another amaziing artist to check out is David Sylvian.✌❤
There's so much beautiful music by Sting. He's a true original, with especially creative time signatures, rhythms, and chord progressions. More, please. Three recommendations: (1) Fortress Around Your Heart; (2) Russians; (3) They Dance Alone.
I'll probably take flak for this, but I like Sting's solo stuff more than his work with The Police (he was the guy you heard sing "Every Breath You Take". Sting is one of the most incredible lyricists of all time, and I hope you'll dive further into his solo discography. "Mad About You" is one of my favorites, as is "Fortress Around Your Heart", "Shape Of My Heart", "The Soul Cages", "Fragile", and "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You". He's a true icon.
@@Shrykespeare I just went and listened to "They Dance Alone" about the Mothers of the Disappeared. Such a stunning and moving song. I don't remember what album it was, but Sting's lyrics read like poetry. A truly great songwriter and artist that doesn't get enough credit.
Sting is, far and away, my favorite artist. I've been a fan since the late 70s with The Police, when I first discovered him. He plays multiple instruments and mixes his styles - reggae, pop, rock, blues, jazz, etc. And yeah, yall "stumbled into something"! Go deep!
I've been watching you guys for a while and I really have to say, I LOVE the way you guys don't just listen to a song, you experience it. The way you close your eyes and just feel it. Especially when you listen to any of my favorite songs. Including this peaceful ballad. Keep it up.
Many many great songs from this talented man STING 😁 "Shape of my Heart, Englishman in New York, Fortress Around Your Heart , Set them free, Fragile, Moon Over Bourbon Street, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, A Thousand Years, and much much more. Great reaction 😊👍🏼
I would def add Sting's song "Russians" to your "Must Listen To" list. It is a hauntingly beautiful song that is especially poignant in light of current events.
Many of us have mentioned him as a solo artist for months, since you heard him as the lead singer of "The Police". I know I've suggested him a _lot_ . More by Sting... "We'll Be Together" "Be Still My Beating Heart" (about his struggles after losing his mom. I played it a lot after losing my mom, and I still listen to it regularly.) "Rock Steady" "Set Them Free" (features saxophonist Branford Marsallis, whose brother Wynton also plays saxophone. I've suggested both for jazz. Branford played on several of Sting's songs. "Englishman In New York" "Shape of My Heart" (from the movie "The Professional". It's one of my favorite movies.) "Fortress Around Your Heart" "Tomorrow We'll See" "Nothin' Bout Me" "Seven Days" "Saint Augustine In Hell" (great guitar, drums and keyboard/piano) "Shadows In the Rain" (the keyboard will grab you)
Sting is an absolute legend! It is sooo hard to recommend his songs because how do I stick to a few? He writes songs that tell a story, that are never boring. Love songs he has but with a twist, always with some tension or complication rather than the mundane. He has so many excellent songs across multiple decades! How about "Shape of my heart" or "Fragile" or "Russians" or "Seven Days" or "The Pirate's Bride" from his "Symphonicities" album where he did new arrangements of his songs with a symphony orchestra and totally changed the feel of them? Damn, it's hard to stop there. You will struggle to find a rubbish Sting song.
STING'S SOLO CAREER IS STELLAR! "DO THE RUSSIANS LOVE THEIR CHILDREN, TOO?" "THEY DANCE ALONE" In Brazil concert he recorded in Spanish for charity. "DESERT ROSE" is EXCELLENT and introduces a great RA singer from Middle East.😍😍😍😍 "ALIEN IN NEW YORK"
“Sting” (real name Gordon Sumner) was the lead singer of “The Police” but also had a successful solo career. Similarly like Phil Collins was the lead singer of Genesis and went solo after.
The best concert I ever attended hands down, end of story (and I saw Def Leppard 3 times, Journey, Yes, Van Halen twice, Don Henley, U2, etc.), was Sting at Red Rocks outside Denver. We bought general seating to try to get seats close to the stage. We camped out for hours and hours to get in. We got about the 10th row center. He came out mid-afternoon for a sound check. There were only about 20 rows there at that point. It turned into a 45 minute intimate small-venue style mini-concert. He was very personable. Came and sat on the edge of the stage, chatted with us, joked with us. He was just a pleasure and a joy I never expected. Then there was the main concert later at sunset. This is a soft, quiet song from Sting. He has many amazing soft slow songs to just enjoy his voice and the many unique instruments he and his band use. Great examples of more like this are “Why Should I Cry for You?”, “The Hounds of Winter”, “I Was Brought to My Senses.” Oh my gosh the beauty of those songs! He really sings all kinds of genres, slow, quiet almost classical, jazz, R&B, reggae, pop-rock, even dabbling a little bit of countryish sound in “I’m So Happy That I Can’t Stop Crying.” His lyrics are so poetic and deep they almost cut you to the core. He is witty. He’s tongue in cheek. He can be almost Shakesphearic ( a new word). He is an Englishman, yet he also sings in Spanish, French, and Latin. He has a song that is very Arabic, sung with an Arabic singer. “Soul Cages, Russians, If You Love Someone, Englishman In New York, Moon Over Bourbon Street, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, Love is Stronger than Justice, Saint Augustine in Hell, Heavy Cloud No Rain, She’s Too Good for Me, Fragile,” and the list goes on and on. Sting is one serious rabbit hole! That’s not even counting his career with The Police, a little old punk rock band in the late 70’s and into the 80s. I see you did Roxanne. So many, many good ones more from The Police…Message in a Bottle…great base line on that one! Sting was the bassist for The Police. Don’t Stand so Close, Synchronicity 2, King of Pain, and what is pretty much universally considered the #1 song of the 80’s ( #1 on the end of the decade countdowns), Every Breath You Take…killer bass line from Sting. He reportedly hated the song too. Will be looking for more The Police and Sting from you!
Guys, it's a chance to react more to Police songs. You have only made two and they are too few. Message in a bottle, Can't Stand Losing you,Roxanne,De do do do de da da da, don't stand so close to me and the list goes on and on. Also consider his solo hit "Englishman in New York"

You two should check out Eva Cassidy who did this song as well. Not to many people know of her. Eva passed away in 1996. One of my favorite songs of her’s is “People Get Ready. “ It was originally done by Curtis Mayfield.
I came here to make the same comment 💙
She has so many great songs! My favorites include her cover of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors " , and "Hallelujah I Just Love Him So "
My favorites are "Stormy Monday " and "Chain of Fools ".
A yoga guru with a magical voice. He always wants to manifest integrity, insight and compassion. And, certainly, his music chakra is open! Beautiful song, Thanx so much, Namaste
You should view the Eva Cassidy cover of stings original song, it is a must.
Sting has a fantastic rabbit hole, including some jazzy pieces. "Desert Rose" is a must!
The Sting and The Police are Rock and Roll Royalty ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
You'd love Sting's song Fortress Around Your Heart. Great lyrics as well as mesmerizing melody.
He did a duet with Rod Stewart & Bryan Adams called All For Love. ❤️
Loved that song from The Three Musketeers! ❤
@@jamiedianne6778 ikr, great movie & great song.
That would make it a trio, not a duet, but great song.
He had a threesome 😋
Eva Cassidy's cover is a treasure, must watch really. Sting cried...
He got me thru some rough patches in my days, especially this song. Forever grateful Sting!! ❤️👍🏽
I love Eva Cassidy singing this song and another one of my favourites that she sings is ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’. You really need to check her out. She was amazing
@@kimcook991 100% 👍🏽
YES- Eva Cassidy is literally an angel
First thing i was thinking was somebody is gonna bring up Eva Cassidy's version ....... Not a patch on Stings version but that's my opinion only guys, not bringing Eva's version down at all .... Peace xx
I came here to say exactly this. Eva Cassidy's cover is the definitive version of this beautiful song. It will bring tears to your eyes.
Yes, it's a beautifull song. Even more so when Eva Cassidy sang it. Sting absolutely loved her cover. RIP, Eva.
We played Eva Cassidys version for my Daddys funeral. Both versions have been hard to ear ever since.
My favorite Sting song is Shape of My Heart.
You guys should hear and watch him sing Desert Rose. Absolutely stunning 🤩
Yes!!
I totally agree..!!! I also love the song “Brand New Day” from the same CD.
His song “When We Dance” is, in my humble opinion, perfection
Edit: Yes, the instrument is a mandolin.
Beautiful song 💕💕💕
Eva Cassidy does a fantastic cover too !
This song always makes me emotional everytime I hear it start 🥺 So beautiful..
You guys should react to Eva Cassidy’s version of this song. You’ve reacted to her before (somewhere over the rainbow) so you know her magnificent voice, just imagine it with these lyrics 💗 I think I’ve read that even Sting prefers her version.
i agree.
Her version is angelic. 🥰
Yes!!!!
Also agree. Eva's "Fields of Gold" is revelatory
Sting said that she sang it better than he did.
Eva Cassidy who died at a young age was an upcoming singer. She sings this song so beautifully. You may want to add her sometime on Female Friday.
They have already reacted to her twice before, but I think it is time to listen to her again.
Love knowing these songs will never die! Songs released in the 60’s is still on the radio❤❤❤❤
Sting wrote and released this song in 1993
This was released in the 90's, though
"Are" still on the radio.
OMG I remember listening to this on my Walkman over and over! Love, Love, Love him and Police! ❤
Your girl, Eva Cassidy did a great cover of this....
Sting is the lead vocalist from The Police; not sure you knew that, as you said you didn't know about Sting and his music. Yes, that is a mandolin.
Cheers.
Love this song! Eva Cassidy has a really beautiful version of it...and Leila Josefowicz plays it on her violin - she is concert quality...
Beautiful!
“Losing” only has one “o” when you are talking about a loss.
I think she skated to the Eva Cassidy version of this song. I could be wrong.
Yes, one of his best in my opinion!
My favorite, too. I’d love for them to react to it!
So beautiful, have always loved this song...such beautiful word pictures. I really am walking in fields of barley and can even feel the warm sun on my arms.
After The Police, Sting had a successful solo career and several acting jobs. I still remember his role in "Dune". Pure evil. ☮❤🎶
Loved him in Dune. Sometimes I think it's a shame he didn't do more acting, but I'd rather listen to him sing so I don't mind that's what he focused on. :)
Don't forget Quadrophenia.
And don't forget "Lock, stock and two smoking barrels"
@@georgegraves8125 Brimstone and Treacle, Artemis '81, Stormy Monday, The Bride.
It's two people falling in love and having a family. It's the antidote to "Every Breath You Take"
I think "If you love somebody, set them free" is the antidote to "Every breath you take".
HOW have you not done any Sting/The Police yet? They were HUUUUUGGE!!!! Sooo much incredible music down this rabbit hole. 🙌
There's so much beautiful music by Sting. He's a true original, with especially creative time signatures, rhythms, and chord progressions. More, please. Three recommendations: (1) Fortress Around Your Heart; (2) Russians; (3) They Dance Alone.
“Seven Days” and “If I Ever Lose My Faith” are fabulous. Sting deserves a deep dive from you. You have definitely stumbled on to something huge.
I prefer Sting's solo work also. It was just better. And he evolved as a songwriter.
@@danalyntuthill1538 I remember hearing "Shape of My Heart" at the end of the movie "Leon (The Professional)". Such a perfect song.
@@Shrykespeare I just went and listened to "They Dance Alone" about the Mothers of the Disappeared. Such a stunning and moving song. I don't remember what album it was, but Sting's lyrics read like poetry. A truly great songwriter and artist that doesn't get enough credit.
@@danalyntuthill1538 I can answer that. It was off Nothing Like the Sun, which I used to own on CD.
Sting was the lead singer of the Police. He has a ton of solo hits.
Read the lyrics while listening to this song. It is so beautiful written.
I would def add Sting's song "Russians" to your "Must Listen To" list. It is a hauntingly beautiful song that is especially poignant in light of current events.
Please, please, listen to "Russians".... Keep in mind that it was written in the mid '80's...... but still very poignant
Many of us have mentioned him as a solo artist for months, since you heard him as the lead singer of "The Police". I know I've suggested him a _lot_ .
More by Sting...
"We'll Be Together"
"Be Still My Beating Heart" (about his struggles after losing his mom. I played it a lot after losing my mom, and I still listen to it regularly.)
"Rock Steady"
"Set Them Free" (features saxophonist Branford Marsallis, whose brother Wynton also plays saxophone. I've suggested both for jazz. Branford played on several of Sting's songs.
"Englishman In New York"
"Shape of My Heart" (from the movie "The Professional". It's one of my favorite movies.)
"Fortress Around Your Heart"
"Tomorrow We'll See"
"Nothin' Bout Me"
"Seven Days"
"Saint Augustine In Hell" (great guitar, drums and keyboard/piano)
"Shadows In the Rain" (the keyboard will grab you)
Sting is an absolute legend!
This man is a legend. He was once the lead singer for the band "Police". They too are legendary.
Eva Cassidy version of “Fields Of Gold” is the best!
It’s Sting’s song…but even he thinks so ;)
Eva really brings the feelings of this song to the forefront . Miss her so much what a talent she was
STING'S SOLO CAREER IS STELLAR! "DO THE RUSSIANS LOVE THEIR CHILDREN, TOO?"
"THEY DANCE ALONE" In Brazil concert he recorded in Spanish for charity. "DESERT ROSE" is EXCELLENT and introduces a great RA singer from Middle East.😍😍😍😍 "ALIEN IN NEW YORK"
Wonderful song from the former bassist for The Police!
“Sting” (real name Gordon Sumner) was the lead singer of “The Police” but also had a successful solo career. Similarly like Phil Collins was the lead singer of Genesis and went solo after.
Listen to Eve Cassidy's cover of Fields of Gold. It'll bring you to tears its so beautiful.
Please listen to Eva Cassidy singing this song absolutely beautiful.
Love Sting! He's amazing live! I've been lucky enough to see him 6 times and the Police once. So good!
Guys, it's a chance to react more to Police songs. You have only made two and they are too few. Message in a bottle, Can't Stand Losing you,Roxanne,De do do do de da da da, don't stand so close to me and the list goes on and on. Also consider his solo hit "Englishman in New York"
