Smoke can be an amazing tool for photographers. It can add drama to a shot or be used to cover a distracting background. On location shoots it’s not always possible to get access to a power supply so as Gavin Hoey demonstrates, using smoke grenades is the answer.
After the shoot join Gavin in Photoshop where has matches the color of the smoke and the color of the models dress to make an amazing location fashion portrait.

Hi Gain, which trigger system do I need for hss over 1.320 sec with Olympus em-1 ? Thank you.
It is a cold burn enola gaye smoke grenade used in airsoft. Does not get red hot but warm
so olympus and canon which better for video and photo?
You're a genius!
you are a great tutor
Cool video n smoke bombs but where did you get the lantern ???!?!
And at what time did you go for this shooting? And at what time do you advise me to go there? I specify that I have a very powerful 600ws as you 600ws flash.

This guy is phenomenal!!!

How do I focus through the smoke?
What year phortoahop are you using?
Which Photoeditor do you use ?
what brand are the smoke bombs?
Gavin Hoey is a boss!
gracias
graet video as always Mr. Hoey . a full frame canon and L series lens or an olympus which is better for the job in your opinion
yunus emre Gursoy Impossible to give a clear answer. Both have plus and minus points. Both are capable of taking great images and both are capable to taking rubbish images, it all depends on the job in hand.
Thumbs up!!
great video, Gavin! A question: if the color around the dress had changed with the settings of hue/saturation what would you have done? A new layer?
Zanelli Caldas Yes and then masked back the colour spill
What software do you use to edit pics
nice. well explanation :D
this was so good that it gave me inspiration to go out on a shoot of my own with smoke grenades it was so much fun and i would love it if anyone who saw this could check it out !!
Is smoke save for the wedding dress?
great job :)
is it possible to do photo smoke photography by yourself??
How can I buy the smoke bomb
Hi gavin :) Is the camera up to par with what you usually shoot?
bonguStyle Yep, no complaints at all :)
Hi Gav, are you now shooting mirrorless only, or mixing it with your Canon gear? Great IQ overall, but Ferns face looked a tad soft? Great vid.
MrKravmagadude Still got my Canon gear. It's getting a bit old and very battered now, so I'm keeping an open mind about what will replace it ;)
Do we need a permit for every place to shot a smoke bomb photography?
where can we buy smoke bombs, are they sold by adorama.com?
Could I do this without a flash or is the flash needed for the smoke to show up?
The flash is to better separate the model from the background
in order to capture the sky detail he needs to make a darker shot... that makes the model impossible to see... thats why he needs the flash... no for the smoke.. or you can do this shot without the sky background so you don't need to do all the adjustments
Are these smoke grenades available online?
Wow!!! How long does one smoke bomb last?
Yoy are the best
Thanks great video...did you need permission to use the smoke grenades in the woods from the council?
Hi Gavin. I love the idea of doing a shot like this but finding private property to let a smoke grenade off might be tricky. Those grenades kick out a hell of a lot of smoke, probably more than most situations call for. I know from your other videos you have a smoke machine, have you thought about using that outside with a battery and power inverter? Just think with a machine it'd be much more controllable and probably be able to get away with using it anywhere, within reason.
Thank you Gavin for this ! Now i know where i can get these Smoke Bombs =)
+That Canon Guy They sell them on Amazon... around $11.00 each which I think is pricey.. Look up Mammoth Smoke Bombs... I use those and they are fantastic.. I get a box of 24 for around $26.00... just google them
Yeah that would be nice to know.
link...? thx
google it, you'll will find it.
My question to you is, is it safe to use on your hand walking around, mount on the grass?
ty
nice idea :)
So how do you suggest a shoot in the middle of the woods without sounding like a crazy ax murderer?
if they are a professional model, tell them this is your idea and what you want from them, if they are professional they wont deem you an ax murder, BUT may want to bring someone along with them (always allow this)
but if they are a stranger/non model youre talking to about doing shoots, maybe do a couple casual shoots, before hand so you and they are comfortable.
the smoke grenades are from www.enolagaye.com/
Very awesome company! Particularly , gavin used EG-18 smoke grenades.
I've worked with representatives of the company and personally know people in the US portion of their franchise. (They are based in the UK)

Gavin, where'd you buy the smoke grenade?
Dennis Skyum I got mine from Driverwood Paintball but plenty of airsoft / paintball stores will stock them. I went with Enola Gaye Cool Burn Purple, non toxic and very dense smoke!
cool
what Programm did he use?
Adobe Photoshop, not sure what version
