Shooting portraits at night can yield some great shots but also comes with many challenges, fortunately with a little bit of lighting know how, you can transform a day time scene to a moody night shot. Photographer Gavin Hoey takes you through his day to night setup using Flashpoint Streaklight flashes and small speedlights.
To complete the night time portrait Gavin mixes colored gels and white balance to get amazing shots in camera that only need minimal post processing in Photoshop or Lightroom.

One of my favorites since many years ago. This RUclips recommended bring back time.
This is absolutely the best tutorial I have ever seen. I am going out and making a day to night shot. I am a retired Vet and former police officer and I have taken to photography with the passion I had with my former careers… this video is what I was looking for.
I love, love, love Gavin Hoey. These videos are perfect. Straight to the point with full demonstration. Explains enough to try it out without getting to deep in every little redundant detail. Keep it up Gavin. I will watch anything you are in.
What I've learnt from watching Gavin's videos is that it's more important to be creative with your equipment than to just buy the best and expect great shots. I'd never have thought of using the tungsten setting and a flash like this but this is one kind of shoot I'd love to try!
I could watch this guy all day. Seriously.
Gavin you are a magician. You don't do photography you do magic.you are really intelligent.
One of your best videos ... Thanks Gavin. I bet David Hobby would be truly impressed by your mastery of lighting to produce mood.
These videos are what sold me on the 360s. Gavin's got a great presentation ability, and, the setup isn't overly complicated. very good stuff..
Gavin:Thank you for your presentation. I want to especially express how much I appreciated your follow up to the photo shoot with some insight into the post processing elements you ultimately used. So often presentations like this do not incorporate the touch up techniques. Thanks for permitting us to see that demonstrated as well.
God Bless You Gavin Hoey for a wonderful sharing
One of Gavin's Best.
wow man.. you are a very creative and clever photographer.
Wow! Real eye opener on the use of flash photography.
Professional advice from a professional photographer, that's priceless! Thank you from Argentina Adorama and Gavin!
That was fascinating!! Love the way you move at just the right speed for the viewer to absorb what you're teaching. So many on You Tube are tedious and repetitive or move on so fast you have to keep back tracking. Excellent tutorials Gavin, I shall definitely recommend!! :o)
They should give you a Nobel Prize, or at least a Fields Medal. I give you a solid handshake, you are a great teacher!
In a word WoW this is why photography is such an art, video and presentation production is superb too, great vid!
One of the best tutorial I have ever watched, thank you for providing such a master class.
Gavin this is priceless... you are doing this video like a friend to friend ... i am very very thankful for this. This is high-end pro shooting. Your attitude and openness gives me smile and your advice gives me more confident to try something new
Really good job. Advanced photography lighting tutorial videos of this level are usually only found in paid tutorials.
+Rob “Lunatique” Chang Thanks for the kind words. You can thank Adorama for making it possible Rob :)
+Gavin Hoey How did you trigger the flash for your meter reading?
+Gavin Hoey -- What was that thing you used to smoke the forest?
+TheThirdMan He just pressed the button on his flash trigger transmitter (the one mounted on his hotshoe), which caused the flash to fire.
tinydog1234 Yeah thanks. After watching this I got my own set up! :D

Gavin Im getting really addicted to your forest shoots! I just bought a couple of flash lights to start working on my own but I have a NIKON D3100 and a couple of slow crappy lenses. It´s a little bit harder with this kind of equipment and I get frustrated often with my results but every video you post inspires me to keep going so thank you so much!!!
