- Join us as we continue our refit and take a day trip to London, where you should always expect the unexpected... 🔔 SUBSCRIBE ➜ bit.ly/SBRUclips⛵ In this video we show you our list of the top 10 priority jobs on the boat, do some electrical work, plumbing and visit a temple!
We decided to take a day off from our DIY sailboat refit to take a day trip so that Rossella could celebrate her birthday by the three of us seeing her sister, brother in-law and nephews, who were visiting London from Italy.
A brilliant day was had by all and, as we met each other in London (on a random night out in 2005) it is a city which will always be close to our hearts. Taking our first trip there with Emma was very special!
⛵ Sailing Britaly ⛵ brings you the sailing shenanigans of Chris (British), Rossella (Italian), and baby Emma (Britalian) as we sail our 1992 Bavaria 350. We make sailing vlogs of our cruising adventures and share any tips and tricks we can along the way. After all, sailors are one big family!

Emma is a beautiful baby! But you already know that. Wonderful family video.
Thank you very much! Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
I love it. Do not be intimidated by a sewing machine. My mother taught me the finer points of sewing/macramé/crochet and knitting... my step father taught me the tricks of upholstery. You may also look in to acquiring a sewing awl. They are very handy.
Thank you Jamie! I'm looking forward to putting the old Singer to work. Britaly came with a Speedy Stitcher on board, so I look forward to trying that out too. It will be a lot easier to the stitching by hand, which is what we always did on our last boat. Fair winds! Chris (plus Rossella & Emma) 🙂
Very happy for you. The Emma videos are real treasures. Great to see you attacking your list.
Hi Tim, thank you very much! It is good to work through the list, although it is still pretty long! Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
Appreciate the detail, especially now you're on the water. Can't wait to see the sewing effort.
Thank you! The sewing won't be pretty, but I will learn in the process and that will be of great value. Fair winds! Chris 👍
I'm surprised that I'm very entertained by the lacing-in of Emma moments throughout the work activities. Keep it going!
Thank you! 😊
Finalmente uomo bianco parlare lingua Italiana 😂😂😂 e pure bene!!!
Buon Vento, Chris 👍
Thanks for letting me live vicariously through your everyday accomplishments. If I weren't taking care of an elderly parent I'd being doing the same thing too.
Hi Larry, life is very unpredictable and we are very grateful for all the blessings we have. We know how incredibly lucky we are and we thank our lucky stars every day. We are sure your time will come and we hope you enjoy our videos in the meantime. Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
Two of my favorite boats in one shot the inside of yours and the outside shot the Vic boat moored alongside the dock wall nice.I do have a Vic boat but before you get too exited mines a 42ins model and under going a refit .it got damaged ive been watching your videos since day one but dont normally comment on them but i enjoy your down to earth approach so much ill stick around and enjoy good luck to you and the girls and lets hope its all plain sailing fair winds
Hi there, thank you for taking the time to comment and we are glad you like our new boat. :-) There are so many interesting vessels in the UK, it is a boat lover's paradise! Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
Can I give you a tip for wrapping PTFE tape, if you flip the roll over to how you had it you can pull it tight with the roll as the wrap it and let a bit off at a time (it's a hard one to explain) also I used loctite 55 thread seal at work (plumber) for joints like that it's brilliant stuff.
great video guys, she is so adorable :-)
Thank you! 😊
I am looking forward to a laugh watching you flounder and pierce fingers at your Singer haha (only humour) everyone is looking really and sounding really well, and Emma is like nearly an adult already ! So soon. Enjoy your days guys, thanks for the vid.
I'll do my best to keep my fingers out! Emma is growing up very quickly! Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
"Yes you are beautiful" Emma. My favorite blue eyed baby. If I pay attention enough I might learn a new language too. Chris you definitely have the skills to keep your home/boat in working order. Did you learn this from your father as I have or did you have some training.
Hi Tom, thank you for your comment! I learnt a huge amount from my father and he was a fantastic instructor. I have many very fond memories of helping (hindering?!) him do work on outboard engines, motorbikes, cars etc. when I was a kid. Sadly Dad passed away a long time ago but his positive influence will stay with me forever. Fortunately I am blessed with an amazing mother too... I was an aircraft technician in the Royal Air Force for 7.5 years (mechanical systems, hydraulics etc. on aircraft) and since leaving the RAF in 2006 I have worked with underwater robots (electrical and electronic systems, fibre optics, hydraulics, mechanical systems...) I'll get stuck into anything and am a great believer that the best way to learn anything is to get stuck in and do it! 👍 Fair winds, Chris
My ex-wife is from Panama. We agreed early on to teach our kids both Spanish and English. They speak both languages; English with a midwest accent and Spanish with a Panamanian accent. My son is a certified translator.
Darryl May It's great to hear another success story Darryl. We have done a lot of reading up on this over the years and we are convinced that this is the best way forward. Fair winds! Chris, Rossella & Emma :-)
Crocodile clips! Haha! Where I come from we only have alligator clips!
We may be swamped with comments about this... 😂
It refreshing to see a channel thats has a different focus. We love seeing Emma's progress and it reminds us of our own children's life aboard almost 30 years ago when we first started taking them out on boats. The greatest gift you can give is knowledge. The ability to be fluent in both Italian and English will be such a good thing. Ant worked for an international Italian company for ten + years and the knowledge, experience and understanding of a slightly different culture or way of doing things just makes us think twice when we do things. Great video guys. Think about Joining the BOA and the Bavaria forum .org the hive mind has been through all the issues you guys have had. Or PM us we can point you in the direction as ex vice commodore of BOA and the BOA' s treasurer.Ant & Cid xx
Ant and Cid xx
Hi Ant & Cid, thank you for your comment. We aim to give Emma as much of our love, time and knowledge as possible as these things are worth so much more than anything material ever could. The funny thing about other cultures is that you don't know the nuances of your own culture until you have something to compare it to. Emma is very lucky that she can have the best of both British and Italian cultures and she can plot her own course between the two.
We would love to get involved with the Bavaria Owner's Association but we really don't have a minute of spare time at the moment. We would be very grateful to anyone who would like to spread the word there about our channel though... 🙂 We hope that you enjoy our future videos and we wish you 'Buon Vento'! Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
Yes - another great video.
Thank you Tim! Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
Hi Chris and Rossella, another interesting vid. There's a lot of cuteness happening on your boat .
I have the same motor on my boat but single cylinder ( it looks like yours maybe a twin? )
I cant get to the sump plug so I had to resort to sucking the oil out with a cheap pump via the dip stick.
The pump didnt like the heavy old oil, I fried it (the pump). I suspect its never been changed.
The guy in the oil shop recommended I buy a plastic vacuum canister because its the thing people have
the most success with, but I choked on the price. I should have put some kero in it to thin it.
Keep up the great work
Tom in Oz
Hi Tom! Thank you! We have completed our engine overhaul now and as part of that we made a 'How To' video about how we change our engine oil. We use a brass hand pump which is tiny, cheap, simple and reliable. We suck the (hot) oil out via the dipstick hole and it works a treat. You can probably find one of those pumps quite cheap (£15 on eBay in the UK with delivery to a UK address) if you search around online and finding somewhere to stow them is easy on any boat as they are tiny! Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
Excellent broadcast. Warning!! Singer needles are very sharp. Looking forward to next episode.
Thanks Greg, I'll watch my fingers! Fair winds, Chris 👍
I always learn from your videos and just to let you know, the screwfix wet/dry vac and Adventurer AGM battery that I bought (taking advantage of your research!) are both great!! Looking forward to your fridge work next!!
Hi there! Thank you for the feedback, it's great to know that what we are doing is helping other people. Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
Just the usual busybody warnings or suggestions...whenever you work on or near a hose clamp, upgrade to the better ones. When you go for inverter upgrade, make sure of the quality of power as well as quantity...square wave, I believe. And when you guys start really traveling, 2way AIS plus whatever radios, phones, etc.
Hi there, agree about the hose clamps, we have a lod more on order. The best inverters are pure sine wave. Ours is not so advanced but based on our previous experience it should work perfectly for our needs. Thanks for watching! Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
Amazing video! Really enjoy watching you fix things and it does not make me feel too bad about all the stuff on my boat I have to fix all the time!
Thank you Patrick, as we're putting these together we do wonder if we go into too much detail with the boat jobs... Then again, we think that somebody out there might learn something (from our mistakes as well as our successes) so we think that it's useful to cover these things in detail. Thank you for the feedback, we really appreciate it! Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
You have some good DIY skills and knowledge!
Thank you Mike. :-) I hope that people find me sharing these jobs useful. Fair winds, Chris 👍
Thank you guy for the mention!we love you and hope to see you in the Mediterranean 💙😘
Non vediamo l'ora! 😊👌👍
Another great video. Emma loves to talk ;-) Italy and English,- and I`m sure I hear some Norwegian as well ;-))
Thank you Anders, Chris is also fluent in gibberish, so maybe that's another one for Emma to learn 😂
Ha ha ha
I love your family dynamic🙂
Thank you very much! Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
Another great video 😊! Was you in London the 16th or this weekend. I was there on the 16th and I swear you went everywhere I visited ha. Whilst your still around if you need any help with repairs or need use of my van before it’s fitted out just shout! I’m in the process of setting up my own RUclips channel which hopefully will include sailing eventually so love watching your videos. Keep it going and I’m looking forward to the next one.
Hi Alastair, thank you very much for the offer of your van, that's very kind of you. We hope you enjoyed London as much as we did- it was a brilliant day! Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
Thanks great video and work well done
Thank you Al! Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
great video guys! lol, yes, seems like boat life is about fixing things :-D our launch date is mid september, hope to see you soon!
Hi Frik & Petro, it certainly helps if you enjoy fixing things! Good luck with your preparations and we wish you fair winds for your journey. 👍 Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
That's a good project list. Who's headed aloft to check the steaming light?
Sailing Inconceivable Hi Hans, that will be me (Chris). I'm a rock climber [or was when I had more time!] so I head aloft using climbing techniques. Fair winds! Chris, Rossella & Emma :-)
Ah the bagpipes it makes me think of Independence.
Pretty nice and big seating area. But isn't such an L-shaped kitchen a little bit small though? You've got 2 wash basin, but where do you cut your onions and stuff? Or do you use the salon table..?
Hi there, we have two wooden infills for the sinks, so they can both be used as work surface. (We place a cutting board on top to protect them) Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
Another great video guys, very informative, Loved the way you dived in literally head first haha
Emma really loves the camera, the happiness on her face when paw patrol came on the TV was so cute.
Just a thought, have you looked at my drone footage to check the aerial to make sure there's no problems there with your VHF? Good luck getting it all sorted 👍😊 see you soon (as soon as there's fair winds!) Haha 👍😊
Hi Garreth, thank you! Emma loves Paw Patrol, and the DVD we have is very nautically-themed too, which is a bonus :-) We did get a great view of our masthead thanks to your drone footage, so that is definitely useful for us. We have bought a new VHF now with GPS, AIS and DSC... Now all we need is an acronym deciphering device! 😂 We look forward to seeing you soon in those fair winds 👍
Hi Guys,
Love the series- well done. Great life that I am so jealous of
Just a quick note with Jubilee clamps ( hose clamps)- Never over tighten. If you are squashing the hose ( like in the video) then you are way to tight. Most fuel and water and air hoses are 2 layers with a woven nylon weave in between each layer. If you over tighten, the barb on the fitting can (will) cut the inner layer allowing the media to leak in between. This is most notable on air hoses where they puff up and look like a snake eating a rat. easy fix, remove the hose, cut an inch off the end and reinstall.
Never, NEVER resinstall a clamp on to the original end- always cut back 1 inch.
Mi piace, ti seguirà e rispolverare il mio italiano. ....in my spaghetti language ;)
Grazie mille, siamo contenti che i nostri video ti siano utili anche per rispolverare il tuo italiano! Rossella, Chris e Emma
😀
Awesome Family
Thank you John! 😊
Is your Volvo Penta a 2002 or 2003?
I have a 2002 - yours in much better condition than mine!
Parts are expensive (OEM parts) - an impeller for the raw-water pump is around $60 Australian dollars (around 1.5 inches in diameter) - so if I could offer any advise, buy non-OEM parts
The exhaust elbow is around $400 Australian dollars - mine is in good shape (engine done 2900 hrs) and I've heard you can remove internal corrosion by soaking the elbow in muriatic acid - that job is on my radar of things to do
Hi there, we have a 2003. We have done a complete overhaul on the engine and will cover this in future videos, so we don't want to spoil those for you! The good news is: we fixed the cooling water issue and it was very, very cheap! 😉👍
Ais and dsc and if your girls stayin in the smoke Rastamouse is cool on the iplayer ire man
Cheers Sean :-)
👍😊
👍😊😉
I won't charge you for my clear motivational skills, I know you would not do your jobs unless you first told me you were going to do them hahaha.
😉
Great episode and lovely to tick off a todo list... I have a Standard Horizon VHF DSC AIS which is great so I would recommend you go that route. There is a UK company selling a great AIS Transponder too www.sevenstarelectronics.com/SeaTraceR%20AIS%20B.htm. USB into chart plotter of PC. Happy days. Andy UK
Hi Andy, that's what we went for in the end: a Standard Horizon GX2200E DSC VHF with AIS and GPS. £339 with free shipping which we thik is very good value indeed considering what you get included in that one package. Fair winds! Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
Sailing Britaly great, same model I have. Nice bit of kit. A
:)
:-)
