A lot of people missed this movie, but it is a great one and worth tracking down. The writing, the casting, the acting - all top notch. The ending is a real mind fuck, in a good way.
This scene makes me a little sad because it kinda shows how close friends who have grown apart are more likely to bring up things that have annoyed them for many years, now that they don't feel as much of a bond that would normally prevent them from hurting each other's feelings. So what used to passive aggressive joking turns into something more mean spirited.
I love how tactile this scene feels. I get such a feeling of the greasy fried rice, the lukewarm beer, how Pepper is smacking his lips while he eats. It's the actors and the use of sound, just great work.

Are these guys even friends? Men make fun of eachother but we know not to cross a line. We know there are certain things you don't make fun of. But in this scene they are getting very personal.
Sure. I've gotten into fist fights with friends before and made up later on. Peppers character was just full of himself and needed to be checked. You can see how he's lowkey jealous of Hoffman's characters wealth and security. Being called a fraudster who wears too much hair product really deflated his ego. Again, they are friends, but friends need to be checked.
Monty values their friendship as a memento. They've all grown apart, especially Jacob and Frank. They see each other for who they are now, not how they used to be. Frank is selfish, Jacob is a wanderer, and Monty's conviction has opened all their eyes about how things have changed.
I mean, conservatives and reactionaries don’t have it, either, bro. Actually caring for people and your community isn’t liberal, bc liberalism is just affectations. You have to actually give a shit, not worry about “looking bad.” So, yes, the liberal who’s only worried about his self-image isn’t a good person, but the fraudulent shitheel who just “tells it like is is” definitely sucks. I could begrudgingly be around Hoffman’s character. I couldn’t sit at that table without forcing Pepper to use those gd chopsticks 🥢 like we were in Kill Bill.
Jacob was 100% right about Frank, when he says you do not know how to behave. That is true, Frank weakness is if he does not get approve from the public about how he looks, acts, and trying to be a big shot, that would eat him alive. Which at certain point, everyone just kinds of fade away, people either find their significant other, get married and so on, others remain single, but find a better job, a hobby, travelling and so on, and you go on living life. You do not want to be Frank at all, anywhere. Even the women that look for fun, they would spend short amount of time with guys like Frank, but they will get enough of that and settle down with better life and marriage and kids and so on, because that is what most women want. Guys like Frank will end up single, and talk about how he use to sleep with such and such women, but that is all in the past and he ends up all alone.
