- Sunset Beach has long been considered the world's power surfing performance energy center. November, 1982: The world's best competed in solid conditions, but in the end it came down to two surfers- only one man would emerge as champion.
The "Wounded Gul" Mark Richards was swooping full rail turns across the open faced runners. Shaun Tomson wiggled his way all the way from the main peak to the sand but the judges were not impressed. Glen Rawlings flapped his way through a series of turns but no dice.
Tommy Carroll's power and poise set him apart and riding a bulky single fin no less!

I totally get the surfing competition thing I guess lol but it's soooooo subjective -- its ridiculous.
"Speed, Power and flow, executing this most radical maneuvers in the most critical parts of the wave." That does not leave much room for subjectivity if well judged.
@@RealSkateStories Yes there is a lot of truth to that, but like the music business which is an art form like surfing IMO. Bottom line is when you add $$ to something like surfing or music lol or anything a human can phuck up because of "The Love of Money" and judges who don't like someones hair doo or attitude or sponsor or whatever; all said plus 100 other factors... Been surfing since the 70's seen a lot of good in competition but also seen way too much bad. Laird can't surf Huntington waste high on shore chop like some, and some couldn't surf Jaws like Laird so who's """""better""""" or "best" ? lol Then ya'll got a guy like Clay Marzo, and the discussion goes on forever lol. @@toothnail605 For an expert international judging panel to collectively excerpt bias against one surfer would be highly unlikely. There is too much oversight. If it happened more than once he would be fired. Spectators that call out bias because their surfer lost 99% of the time are the ones that are biased. Like for example one country's surf fans in particular that will call out racial bias almost anytime their countrymen loses. It's pathetic.
The only way to compare competitive surfing to music is by comparing it to a music competition with clear criteria so the competitor knows what the judges are looking for.
One man's definition of what surfing or music is does not change what it is for everyone. If one man does not believe surfing, or music, and competition don't mix, that does not change the fact that surfing is a sport. It's also an art. It's also a pastime. It's a lo t of things to a lot of different people. Surfing is all of those things.
Competitive surfing is very specialized. Big waves, WQS, WSL, Club comps, etc. Comparing Laird to a guy competing in Huntington to say who is better has no context. You could compare him against other competitors at Jaws, and even determine who fulfilled the judging criteria the best on a given day for the trophy. It's not that subjective. The result almost always is correct for an unbiased observer.
@@RealSurfStories Points well taken. My comparison of Laird (and forgive me if I didn't explain properly) is if Laird is competing in waist high Huntington against someone half his size and half his weight... Then said person(s) compete at Jaws... "Who the best?" and/or who wins? Referring to when Laird was in his prime, not now. Personally I believe (respectfully) that surfing competitions are for the jocks, and free surfing and/or soul surfers [as we used to call em] are for the Artists. Peace
I was lucky during this period from 82-90, to live on Oahu. I witnessed some of the most serious surfing done ever by Richards and Carrol.

Killing it on a single fin...
The wounded gull was performing before his time. My all time roll model in my surfing adventures. Went to meet him in mereweather Australia. Got my photo with him at Ray Richard’s surf shop. My hero.
Amazing surfing for 1982. The boards they were riding were big single fins, so to do the turns they were doing on equipment that is primitive by today’s standards makes it particularly impressive. Not to mention Sunset is a tricky place to surf at the best of times.
Also notice that in those days, there was no circus following them around. There was no scaffolding or big ceremony. Just a little award ceremony on the sand.
Finally, bear in mind that there was no serious money in pro surfing in those days. Many of the pros had labouring jobs back home to fund trips to compete and pay the ASP fees.
To be a pro in the 70s and 80s, you had to REALLY want it. But all these guys paved the way for everything you see today in pro surfing!! 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
Good surfing. A completely different style from today, but it still stands up.

While I was watching that I was hoping it was Tom because I remember MR winning Sunset and thought Tom was going to be ripped off. He caught longer bigger waves with beautiful style and flow and threw in some radical late takeoffs. And all on his backhand to boot. Beautiful surfing Tommy, congratulations, and I'm glad the judges got it right. One of your greatest competition performances and what you are like 20 years old? Those waves are big!

MR is smoother more stylish, those long fades dropping in. Just beautiful surfing.

In these conditions? As good as anyone.
I thinknthe jidges got ot right by modern comp criteria. TC is technically brilliant and maximised wiyh radness in each wave in its most critical section. MR is an artist, which is also a pleasure to watch l, for different reasons. Both were awssome and the judges made the right call in this comp.
Plus riding primitive equipment in serious surf. A big difference from todays refined thrusters and quads they’re riding!

Would have been good if the camera guy showed MRs board, looked pretty easy for Mr to flick it around.

MR easy. Better flow, completed maneuvers and better bottom turns. IMO.
I've got nothing against Tom Carrol. We are all human. But the surf industry putting him up as the pin up boy of athleticism when he was a drug addiction is nothing short of disgraceful.
That came many years later and when it did not many knew. I worked with him extensively during that period and I could have never imagined.

@@Nickos-sn5gm I grew up in that era and, to be fair, they were different times. It’s easy for us to judge the past through today’s lens, but remember pro surfers didn’t have big money contracts and full support teams to look after them like nowadays. And cocaine in the 80s was rampant and didn’t have the same stigma as it does today. I remember it being everywhere by the mid 80s. There were lots of people using it that I would never have suspected.
You’re absolutely correct he had issues with drugs, and what I’m saying is not meant to excuse it, but it at least explains things and puts it more into context. 🙂🙏
lots of people are drug addicted, it’s not a disgrace or a shame. Some people fall more easily to it, they all think they can handle it & learn the hard way.
The disgrace & detestable thing is modern pro sports, everyone is juiced on peds, schlepping it off as being real fit. Laird’s neck looks ridiculous, you don’t get that from surfing. Kelly S looks like a bot, if u are into watching machines do things.
I will take Derek Ho & Tom C all day. I don’t care if they had a private personal life outside of surfing. Their personal bs is none of my business.We all have our own bs to deal with. I personally never needed or desired any drug. It’s doing what comes natural to yourself. I would bet that drug dealers (aka CIA/DIA/FBI&DHS) are all over the place in pro sports, just as they are always backstage at arena shows.
So you are an angel, pure as snow .Tom had the guts to admit his mistakes I wonder what mistakes big or small you have made ?????? Get a life .
