Fast and Loose | Celebrating The Legacy Of Mark Richards And The High-Performance Twin Fin

- The day has finally come, dear reader, where we can show you our twin-fin-filled creation, "Fast & Loose". The film tells the story of the modern performance twin through the lens of Australian icon Mark Richards, who found inspiration in the boards of Reno Abellira, shaping tutelage in Dick Brewer and created a design all his own that he surfed to four straight world titles.
To this day, Richard's feat of making his own boards and surfing them to such success stands apart as one of the greatest achievements of all time surfing. But what's perhaps more impressive is the way that twin-fin designs have evolved in the aftermath, disappearing for years before reemerging in modern surf culture as the go-to craft for those looking to balance performance surfing with high-speed, skatey fun.
"Fast & Loose" celebrates that unique flavor not just through the story of MR, but through modern rippers like Zeke Lau and Kael Walsh, who took the classic twins and updated versions for a spin. It was a fun film to make, as it damn well should be when the subject is twin fins. Hopefully the feeling is contagious.
Please enjoy.
I surfed my way through the late 70's and Richards was and remains an icon. May God continue to bless his life.
Classic MR !
They don't make pro surfers like this anymore. So humble and what a ripper! I'm in love with my California Twin! Thanks MR!
Read an article which read. When Richards cleaned up Bells. 1978, Richards just won Bells. Everyone left and there is one man left on the beach. Mark Richards, cleaning up the rubbish everyone left behind...... Don’t think I have to say more.
That's awesome beyond words...👏
I rode my best mates mark Richards twin fin in Durban in 82 and it blew me away , Now in 2019 I'm shaping hybrid fishes for older guys like me . this video should be standard for every surfer
One of my favorite surfers growing up, along with Dane Kealoha, Shaun Tomson and Michael Ho.
Won my first comp on a Mark Richards Twin back in 84. Man do I wish I still had that board.
HEY M.R ! my dormitory surfRats from EMBRY-RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY , always followed your career from the shores of Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach .....thanks for the memories , 1980-1983
We used to wait for every issue of surfer magazine to arrive in the 70's . To see all the cutting edge surfing and exotic waves
and every image lasted at least a month, some were burned in for life.
I got to meet Mark at Haleiwa over a couple of days back in the 90's, when i was shaping...he was a super cool guy who was having fun just hanging out with the locals in the water.
Fast and loose. It really makes me wanna ride a twin again. The "wounded gull" was and still is inspirational.
There are a million boards out there that you can have fun on. But I want to ride an MR because Mark is just a super cool and humble guy.
It only took 20 frickin years for people to wake up to the refined twin ! Geez.
One of a kind style!
Fav pic was missed. MR standing along side His Silver Porsche 911 Carrera in the 80's.
Yeah, we know. Rights were tough on some images. In the process of making this film we did find SEEF's complete archive from this shoot. markrichardssurfboards.com/blog/2013/12/surfing-magazine-cover-shoot-1980/
Check out the movie 'Bustin down the Door', so awesome. Love it. Oh and this doc is awesome. MR is a proper surf legend
Yeah awesome doc. You can tell MR was raised right.
Mr is a living legend
Classic. Never to be replayed again.
Been riding my 6'4" super twin all year and digging it!
Never forget those still shot's,from surfing magazine's of M.R, legend!??????
it is cooler to surf something different than the same thing everyone else is on.....but whoever is having the most fun in the water wins.
Being able to shape your own stick and winning world tour a few times is pretty neat and he is still having fun ripping the waves up, so yeah it's cool. PEACE
Wins? It’s not about winning or losing. It’s about having fun!!
2:03 RIP Brother Buttons.
Very cool..thx
SURFER killing it with the consistency of good vids short and long format. Make a proper movie soon please. Also the music in this was brilliant, these songs are so indie I can’t even find some of the songs anywhere 😂 it’s amazing.
Nice cinematography, very moody, just the way I like it *thumbs up*
Dope seeing KOA on the vlog today! Psychedddddd.
I thought Dave and Ava came out with the first twin fins anyway I remember him riding mad at a 1973 World Finals at Huntington Beach.
I think I will try a twin fin now 🤙🏻
or ride a thruster and just call it a twinny like that guy ^^^^
MrDanielHawes 🤣👍🏻 good idea
Off the top at 10:52. Thank You Dane Kealoha .
Not a fan of his style but 4 Championships on your own shaped equipment? Now that's saying something!
what 's the song groovin along to mikey wright's section?
M.R is a legend, pioneer and waterman. Whoever let this thruster edit lost total credibility for this video.
BTW this is this first comment I have ever left on a video on youtube. That is the level of how i'm feeling about this faux pas.
Still a 510 about 18 and 1/2 wide fiction swallowtail with a brewer fin was the loosest bored I ever Road Loose as a Goose and fast wicked fast we were doing that stuff that they're doing on the boards now back then 1971 2 and 3 when I was competing in Huntington Beach Riding for windansea.
I'm an early 70s Surfer Dave no Ava used to ride a fish Heroes wanted the World Finals in Huntington Beach in early 70s.
See the young guys push the pivot too hard in the turn and the tail washes out, classic twinny. Then you see them figure it out and they're ripping.
Corky Carol and Mike Purpus are now running Blue Mango Surfboards. Check em out.
Who cares?
Well no one who rides a soft top cares Gen Bravy. Surfing started with these OGs. Gotta show respect 🤙🏽
Joe Stalin nice man. I still surf next to Mike Purpus every now and then
@@c.t.6314
WUT? ....
I ride a soft-top 😭
You hurt my feelings, brah!
Gotta respect the OGs. None of us would be riding the boards we ride today if these classic dudes didn’t show up. Ya feel me brah? That’s why you should care 🤙🏽
"blasphemized" lol I like it. Like a combination of blasphemy and ostracized
Parts of the video mentioning riding all types of boards, that its cool and yet i still hear of some places that give shit to high performance longboarders, the red headed step child
anyone know the song at the start?
Longboards still rule
Brian Szymanski all longboarders are kooks
Longboards rule
I saw my first twin fin in 1971. Did they exist before that?
Yes. Look up Steve Lis
@@Jetty-me6cw Bob Simmons
How can you call it a twin when it has 3 fins?
.... I shred the gnar.
In the same way that the same surfer can choose... if he wants to... to identify as a female on Thurs afternoons between 1pm and 6pm. That's what the world has come to... 2+1 =2
@@sushimamba4281
Sad but true and fully pathetic.
😂😂😂😂😂
I wonder why there's so little footage of the subject in this?
Because it was expensive to create footage back in the days and there was no money in surfing like there is now
1st comment...I love your vids surfer!
klopfs gonna be pissed
Nah, he got paid.
I'd sooner watch MR surf a twinny any day over those young kids flicking the thing around.
Surf a up
Cheyne Horan should have won those three titles.
But he didn't lol
Never comfortable in the tube.
Mark Richards surfing looks like a ballerina. Don’t know how he won 5 world titles.
"can't wait to go ride this twin fin" - points at his thruster fins.
Amal Mongia it was twin plus 1 but yeah not a standard twin
Jordan Hull I hope you don’t work with money mate 😉
for those of you that think because you see 3 fins it makes a board a thruster, here is a lesson for you. You're welcome. ruclips.net/video/0xRoq1DHAcg/видео.html
diabolical1976 yeah it’s a 2+1 but still
@@diabolical1976 i did not watch that. i get that fish design can be transferred to other fin set ups. just found it funny that there are two different guys surfing thrusters in this while calling them twin fins. all these vids are just ploys to sell boards anyhow.
Anyone know the ending song ?
STEVIE LIS.
SUNSET CLIFFS/
OCEAN BEACH.
Know your roots kooks!
In all fairness it says the development of the "high performance" twin. MR isn't claiming he invented the twin or the twin fish which was invented in San Diego at Sunset Cliffs by Mr Steve Lis in the late 60s.
“What you need is the perfect board for what you’ll be riding”
I never thought of that.
I remember the World Finals at Huntington Beach and Nueva was riding a fish we used to call it a fish I tried one of those boards and thought it was too tight I didn't like it I was riding a 6-foot 18 and a half wide swallowtail with a brewer fin at the time that was a loose board good for medium waves too big David Nueva gave up his tournament to save a pigeon out of the water I was sitting in the water when this happened in Huntington Beach I think it was 1973 are so the good old days the beginning of the real short boards.
I was building and riding twin fins in '71, always my favorite design.
'The wounded seagull' huge turning point in surfing. That soul arch.... looks easy ..Great memories. coltrump westoz🇦🇺
I believe he was called...
...."the wounded gull".
Every review of a modern twin with a "2+1" setup: "oh it's so good, it rides like a thruster"
That young bloke on the orange board. Yep that's a go
fast squirt scrunch and drive weapon . Hey see yellow board white t shirt .
Would have been awesome to see a bit more of Mark Richards surfing.
Found a 82 MR at a shop closing….made it into a twin and never looked back
David Nueva was the one that came out with the twin fin in 1970 two or three
And I think Corky had one around 1970 called the Blackbird, which I think is the red board at 0:58 - 1:01.
Simmons
I learned on a twin fin. MR is the most
Love my Mr Super twin. Most fun I've ever had on a board
zeke had a third fin in tho
Friend was a big MR fan when we surfed in the 80s-90s. Carroll, Curren, Thompson, were our heroes too.
RIP Dale.
🤮🤙🏾
try to branch out, but back to his roots...cannot blame the guy for attempting to advance the sport
kids those are not twin fins your surfing twin+2
Zeke Lau riding a the iconic twin as a thruster?
I need one!
Cringe
