Hedley Verity, one of the great spinners of English county cricket and arguably the greatest ever left-arm spinner. Took 1,956 wickets at an average 14.90 (yes, 14.90!) in his career. No one dismissed Don Bradman more times in test cricket than him.
He was killed fighting for his country in the Second World War in 1943. If it wasn't for the war, who knows what his final achievements would have been?

The only bowler alongside Larwood who caused the don some trouble.

Nice run up and action, looked like he could give it a rip. Lively crowd in the background too.

They must have played an inconceivable amount of cricket back then, Verity claimed 1956 wickets yet played only for 8 years, and his final season was shut down halfway thru as the war broke out. I had to go and lie down for a rest after reading his stats, nobody gets even half the number of playing days now.

Of the 60,000 or so forst class matches played only all 10 wickets in an innings has been achieved 90 or so times. Hedley has the best figures 10 for 10. He also has the 9th best figures as well! Only 3 bowlers have taken all 10 wickets twice. Id say Hedley Verity was the ebst bowler ever.

He was killed in Sicily in 1943. I strongly recommend the book 10 for 10 about the day Hedley took 10 for 10. Amazing read.
