I think the adult male with Nova was not her father, but a caretaker who may be a scientist. Remember Colonel said some soldiers flee and tried to develop cure? There were some flasks inside the hut where Nova was found. I believe that the caretaker was actually experimenting some medicines on her, which explained why (1) she doesn't look sad when the caretaker was dead, because she was being abused for medicine testing; (2) her ability to act more or less like human despite being infected, the medicines used on her might be working to some extent, thought she was not yet fully cured as she still couldn't speak and wasn't aware she was human.

The movie could have done a better job explaining this theory. Instead, we get Nova not shedding a tear over the man taking care of her, to Nova crying her eyes out for an ape she met a week ago and giving him a flower that she remembered receiving from him.
Nova doesnt remember/ doesnt think herself as a human anymore. Meanwhile, Maurice is a teacher figure to the young apes and perhaps had a more "primitive" and mute-friendly approach that he usually uses to handle child apes, which of course had a better impact on Nova.

Remember what happened in Rise with Charles Rodman when his Alzheimer's came back with a vengeance making him forget who he was? That is what happened to Nova in War, she forgot who she was entirely due to Alzheimer's and thus cried over Luca, who she met only a few days ago, but not the man taking care of her, who she probably knew for years.
To be fair the colonel's response to the outbreak was reasonable, after a virus basically ended civilisation and most of humanity you can't take any chances, if officials like him were in charge if ebola outbreaks there would be a less casualties

Ceasar has such a powerful voice.
In a future movie, one that's set centuries after war, where Caesar is a legend, the reason humans are treated like cattle could be the apes misinterpreting his ideology. Perhaps they feel that because humans are so primative that they won't be able to properly survive in the world, so maybe they feel Caesar would want them to round them up in order to protect and care for them.

To your point of the next movie and humans being cattle, remember that "Ceasar's" apes found out from "Bad Ape" that other apes had gotten smarter as well. It sets up a narrative of those apes not led by Caesar will be compassionate to humans while they other apes that did not have the experience that Caesar had will be harder on them... and these to groups will meet...
Maybe the other group could be lead by general Urcus.

I think this is by far the most interesting thing about this story. The fact that the virus mutated which devolved humans in not being able to verbally communicate. It is such a scary concept, when the scene with the virus was explained it literally scared me more than any horror film could. Especially when the Colonel was infected by it and was trying to commit suicide. That part was so sad. I would probably do the same thing.
There's a theory I saw on reddit that Nova is actually like the mutants from the original series. That she learns sign language and understands the apes by reading their minds, but she is thus far the only one know to have this ability.

literally dying in the book, Firestorm, (prequel to the movie Dawn) it is highly hinted that Will was executed by a militia that was hired by Genysis to cover up their involvement with the virus. Now that Ceasers dead it should be obvious that we will never see Will again, and he's pretty dead as well.

The book never states who that person is..and malcom was the last person in mind as blue eyes and rocket parted ways with his family after they found a new colony of humans they could join

honestly this was a pretty good prequel series to the original planet of the apes, it makes logical sense, and not too hard to follow how things are coming to be like from the original movies, not like the alien prequels where it's a little too shrouded in mystery but at the same time trying to explain things to leave room for more prequel movies

I didn't even think about the chanting thing the Alpha-Omegas had to do every morning. That's brilliant. Also I think you're absolutely right, and the next film will be a reflection of the first Planet of the Apes original movie. I can't wait to see a George Taylor analog yelling about "damn dirty apes." And an adult Cornelius! Wonder if we'll get a Dr. Zira too?
I do hope they do this, but the dirty ape line was actually referenced in Rise when Caesar says no. Would be cool to see this though

His fathers disease came back with a vengeance because his immune system started producing antibodies against the virus that contained the genes that enhanced his neuroregeneration. It is clearly explained in the first movie. If anything it implied that the virus hadnt mutated if its epitopes were consistent enough to be targeted effectively by the immune system. There was no setup.
the story in these movies are very clever and amazing, just in war a little hard to keep up with some parts
I like your theory. Ironically, it also ties into the later movies in the original series (and even the Tim Burton film) where there's also another, hidden branch of humanity that gain super brains with psychic powers while other manfolk are going crazy. So a) most humans die from the simian virus while a small group survive; b) the majority of survivors eventually succumb to a mutated virus that causes them to regress to an animalistic state while an even smaller number survive that strain too; c) as the vast majority of future humans are born as "animals" a really, really small batch of others adapt to have super brains. This process takes place over a few generations (just how many depends on if you count in the Tim Burton movie) and reveals itself in the future-future when the super brain people go subterranean and regain atomic/nuclear technology. Coincidentally, at that point, Ape civilization has advanced to the point of human-like corruption and being oppressive. So eventually everybody is f'd up because both humans and ape species have made exponentially advanced bioloigical adaptations without an equal measure of advanced wisdom.
This does not tie into the original films. The story of what happened to the Earth, and why humans became less evolved, and Apes more evolved is completely different. The original films had more to do with nuclear weapons, and less with a virus. Seriously, the telepathic humans in BTPOTA are worshipping a nuclear warhead. Did people just watch this reboot, and not the originals?

The reboot Planet of the Apes film series is different from the previous film series in that the original series had humanity kill itself via nuclear war and apes became intelligent via evolution by becoming the new household pets of humanity after a virus from outer space killed all cats and dogs. The new film series has humanity destroy itself through a virus which also makes apekind evolve. The Tim Burton film takes place on another planet called Ashlar and the humans and apes on that planet are descendants of the humans and apes onboard the Oberon spaceship which crashlanded there nearly 3 millennia earlier. It has nothing to do with the new film series. So how exactly would Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, starring Markie Mark, tie in with the new film series?
I remember in rise of the planet of the apes there was news coverage of a shuttle being launched to space, what if they return to earth in the next movie only to discover that the planet has been overrun with apes and humans are devolved, what if Taylor is the main astronaut?
That is something I was talking about in my ending explained for this film. I couldn't agree more! I don't know if they will expand on Caesar's story in a reboot or leave the prequels were they are leading up to the original!
This video has some inaccuracies. It wasn't the virus that made Will's dad's Alzheimer's symptoms return. It was his own immune system attacking the virus and destroying it, preventing it from doing its job. So Will made a version of the virus that was able to stand up to the body's immune system better. This doesn't stop the possibility that a mutating virus could disable higher brain functions, however.
Exactly, what's left of humanity survived because they have Alzheimer's whether it's active or dormant. Those who had active Alzheimer's had it cured by catching the Simian Flu which also protected them from the virus. Meanwhile, those who had dormant Alzheimer's were immune to the virus as well. However, now in both cases, the Alzheimer's is becoming aggressive in order to fight the virus just like it did in Charles Rodman in Rise.
The girl's 'father' is one of the soldiers who escaped from the Colonel and is a scientist. Remember seeing some flasks inside the house? it looks like a makeshift lab to me. He was experimenting new drugs to cure the mutated virus, and used Nova as a subject for testing, which explained why she didn't show emotion to his death as he probably abused her for drug testing.

The good that came from humanity caesar took that goodness and compassion his mentor james gave him and gave it too the apes. I mean as long as the apes know what caesar told them i dont think they will treat the humans like cattle. They will probably stay away from them and only kill them in self defense. It touched me how caesar even though he wanted to kill the colonel he didnt. James treated caesar more like a son and taught him everything he knew while he did take him out on a leash he had too it was the law.
More human than the actual humans? More like more compassionate than humans.
I think the most human, compassionate character is Nova.
Maybe it's about generations -- the further the generations, the more severe the virus's destruction. Nova is smart and learns sign language rather quick, but say she has children, who will learn things at an incredibly slow rate, only to have grandchildren who can hardly learn a thing.
The Father was Alzheimer symptomatic.. The Disease returned.. with that strong purpose. Not viral mutation.

the next film time line will be when Nova is about 19-20yold, then astronaut Tyler finds her. at some point whole planet gets nuked and restarts

This series of movies handle the concept of the virus and its possible evolution extremely well... what no one mentions is the multiple violations to laboratory practice seen in the first movie, from the handling of cesars mother to how the fat guy gets infected.... he would not be allowed in without the mask to him not being immediately and securely isolated after having been exposed. The series very clearly attack us humans in our incompetence
You know, I do wonder that...if this is leading into the first Planet of the apes that was 68 version, and this is their way of explaining what happened with the humans in the far future. Would the virus still exist for when Taylor and crew on Icarus return years later? or would it be dumbed down to nothing eventually?
I imagine the virus has been dumbed down into nothing. It mutated throughout the trilogy. First being lethal, then making people lose their intelligence and then eventually it will just be a natural part of their DNA.

There was something in the first movie about astronauts in a failed mission to mars. What if they came back, a theory I have is that posibly this new mutation of tue virus is inherently non lethal to the humans that were mostly in the lethal phase. What if the astronauts came back just to see the world broken, maybe even meet the dr. who created the virus.

There are some things that are left a bit unexplained. Caesar as an already advanced ape even before the virus outbreak would naturally have a far better linguistic skill than most of his fellow apes, but this doesn't explain why his adult son, directly descended from his DNA, have not shown any ability to speak like his father. Perhaps this is because the apes that do talk like Caesar, Koba, and Bad Ape only learned human language as a result of spending significant time among humans and sign language is more accepted as a means of communication within the tribe, therefore vocal linguistics are not commonly taught. So basically they all have the capability of speech, but only some of them actually speak. For instance Maurice can talk, but prefers speaking in sign language. I love the interesting small detail in the movie where Bad Ape speaks English fluently but has no knowledge of sign language whatsoever because he was never exposed to it, which leads to hilarious result.

The next film needs to be written to include the humans POV to stay interesting. I understand why Reeves went exclusively to the apes POV in WAR and it was fantastic, but Caesar's story is over now. The original films did a good job of telling a story from both apes and humans POV.

Haha. You won’t find any answers here. So many differences even between the fictional ape disease and Covid-19. One being that the one in POtA is a genetically engineered strain of a virus (seemingly a flu like virus given the respiratory effects we saw... which is a weird choice for a delivery virus, you wouldn’t want your medication literally spreading from person to person) that was delivering a gene therapy, so also modified plasmids and genetic material and enzymes to literally alter the DNA of our cells beyond manufacturing of more virus, that was the part that was supposed to cure Alzheimer’s which wouldn’t exist at all in a natural virus like Covid-19 (yes, the scientific biology community is in almost complete consensus that it was not genetically altered and while their isn’t as evidence that exists which can be found through study of the genome to conclude it wasn’t a natural virus that escaped from a lab, what evidence there is does suggest that wasn’t what happened, but that’s a different question I’d be happy to discuss as a scientist but isn’t the point here).
The movies even explain that the reason the father stops responding to the treatment is not because the virus has changed and started having an opposite effect on him, but that he simply developed an immune response and his body started killing the virus before it could deliver the gene therapy, so the explanation in this video doesn’t make sense either... even fictionally the way it’s explained in the movies one would only develop Alzheimer’s symptoms if one already had Alzheimer’s. His character simply regressed rapidly back to the state he was at prior to treatment for whatever reason (from what we know about Alzheimer’s it has to do with beta amyloid plaques, so if those still existed and the gene therapy simply allowed his brain to form more synaptic connections to function normally. The speaking thing is better explained by some latent effect of the virus engineered to deliver the gene therapy. Or yeah, a random mutation that causes it to infect the larynx or something the first virus lacked.
I don't think there should be another film...I believe War should be the finale for these prequel movies and for this universe for now. It ties in pretty well with the original planet of the apes film (i.e. the wooden crucifixes, the mute and unintelligent humans, and the orangutan leader...the only thing missing is why the apes became even more human like and why they treat humans so poorly

I only realized after re watching the trilogy to prepare for Kingdom that in Rise, it’s shown in a newspaper article and on a news broadcast that human astronauts are stuck in space right before the flu hits. I may be wrong but was this hinting that one of those astronauts left up there before everything goes dark is one that crash lands in the original ?

The soldiers in white are known as the "Northern Army", they are what remains of the United States Army. Alpha-Omega used to be part of them, but they deserted and when the northern army tried to make peaceful negotiations, the colonel beheaded the representatives, leaving only one alive to send the message that if they wanted to stop him, they would have to do it themselves.

No need, there are already other apes out there in the world that are as evolved as Caesar's colony, as seen with Bad Ape, that will clash ideologies with them and that will lead to how humans become cattle. With Maurice adopting Nova as his daughter, this probably sets up how the apes will turn humans into cattle in future films by having Caesar's colony adopt humans as their children then as other apes come into the colony it devolves from treating humans like children to cats and dogs and finally to cattle.

The only fraction of humans who I don’t expect to suffer the loss of speech and intellect are the mutants. They’ll believe their only escape from becoming the apes’ cattle is to hide/live underground reluctantly. Then as centuries go by they go through a different bad mutation that makes them look more like monsters.
In the Planet of the Apes lore if you don’t become a farel human you become a mutated one. One way or another humans in POTA are cursed with a weakness.
Thanks for the explanation of what was going on with the humans and apes. If I were to write the next story it would be some aliens or mutants would co exist with the apes instead of an astronaut story. But then again that will not happen since ring kissing is not my style.
Since D C and Marvel own the rights to their alien characters (Superman, X Men etc.) 20th Century Fox would have to create a new character based on Superman or the X Men.

Honestly I don't really see the point in why the virus has to be the reason why the humans became primitive. From watching the movies I always imagined that the humans were just treated like animals for so long they lost most of their intelligence. I mean you wouldn't waste the time to try to teach a pet to fully communicate would you? Maybe some simple commands or only teach a few special cases like we do with chimps, but otherwise it's just a waste a time.

Imagine during the Simian Flu Pandemic, there is an old woman dying of Alzheimer's and her two adult children are taking care of her. Her daughter inherits her ability to develop Alzheimer's while her son does not. The Simian Flu gets in the house and cures her Alzheimer's which makes them all happy but the son catches the Simian Flu and dies. The daughter survives because she has the ability to develop Alzheimer's just like her mom whereas the son did not. Years go by and the two scrape by in the apocalypse and the mother's Alzheimer's returns with a vengeance just like it did with Charles Rodman in Rise. Then while her daughter is taking care of her, her Alzheimer's becomes active and aggressive for the first time and the two regress into a primitive state.
I would also like to see at some point in the ape franchise crossovers like they are doing with star wars ie han solo story but in this one koba.,Maurice, rocket and so on and when they end each one meets ceaser. Just a thought.
