- Today I take a look at the new iFi Micro iDSD Black Label DAC/Amp. I got to kick off the West Coast Head-Fi tour for the iDSDBL and had fun listening with several pairs of IEM and my beloved AudioQuest Nighthawks. The iDSDBL's main competition from my collection was from the Chord Mojo, and I'll let you know how I thought those two compared to each other. Thanks again to iFi for letting me take a listen. Kudos for a great piece of kit!
I had the previous version and even though I was satisfied the Black is clear and SERIOUS overall upgrade. The previous was a value for money good sounding device this one is a steal..
Totsipaki I completely agree that the Black Edition is a noticeable improvement over the older, standard version.
Great overview. How does it pairing with AQ Nighthawk? Is it good match?
Yes, I thought it was a good match with Nighthawks when listening with both 3D and X-bass off. It was also one of the headphones I thought people would enjoy the 3D setting with. I didn't enjoy Nighthawks with the X-bass setting, though.
Add an iFi Purifier2 for a mere $109 to the Black Label and be blown away. I'm guessing here but I'd say there is a 7% improvement in sound quality across the board: sound staging, clarity, focus, timing, smoothness. The enjoyment factor is usually 2X to 3X the technical improvement when listening over time. The iPurifier2 is a stone cold bargain.
Old comment but if you attach an ipurifer3 it makes a notable improvement.
Yes, it has some of the tech already in it but check the forums and IFI themselves state it’s not at the equal level as the separate purifier.
Is normally people who’ve never heard it who make such claims.
@@jpined14 LOL, and you can bet I bought the iPurifier3 to replace the iPurifier 2....it is noticably better.
SHAWN WATSON I’m sure there’s arguably better DACs and amps around I doubt most have heard the Micro BL this way.
Do you know any program which can convert wav files to DSD512?
Another reviewer reported that when using the usb connection with a computer there is a few second delay in playing music or playing video. Did you find this to be the case?
i believe this used to be an issue only for windows, the new update may have fixed that. go to head-fi and ask to make sure
i literally placed my order as i watched your vid...i did some basic reading on it seems like a good value ....i was just about to order the mojo...but i think the ifi may offer more .....anyway great vid bud ...cheers
korebrent1234 - Thanks for the kind words. I'm sure you'll love the iDSDBL!
Nikolaus Matheis i do really enjoy it the 3d adds a nice touch as does say using my jh16s the ultra sensitive setting....however my LGv20 wants to charge the BL i cannot select host usb mode for reason its likely user error but the batt life is very nice ....cheers for the great video bud keep it up
If using the ifi in direct mode to an integrated amplifier, does this bypass filtering and switching options?

Good question. To be honest, it's one I'd have to look up. Perhaps someone has covered it on the relevant headfi thread?
Which is more detailed/transparent on mids/highs between Mojo and BL?
I'd choose Mojo for mids and iDSDBL for highs.
What about for bass?
moli0123 If you want punchier bass or want to increase bass quantity, iDSDBL is the way to go.
The mojo though not bad is crap compared to the Idsd Black. If sound and Quality line out are your priorities there simply is no comparison. I nave exchanged my I dsd black with a friend's mojo and though fun I got bored of It in the first three days and cant wait to get my Ifi back. The Mojo Sounds Dull and artificial in comparison and as a line out device It is totally inferior.
Mojo's bass is plain an monotonous like playing the same note all the time and does not have neiter depth nor extension It just kicks around the same thing very very fast thats All. In comparison the Ifi blacks Is bery deep and flexible and detailed and as dynamic and as fast with the difference It does not bore you and sounds like true music this time..
Will this connect to any mobile phone fast charger? Shame it didn't come with one like the ha2
Mr2pint
To charge it? If so, the answer is no of I remember correctly. You use the blue USB cable that came with it because the charging port needs USB A female instead of male.
Android /IOS charges use USB A Female adapters so I don't see why I couldn't use any fast charger - we will see..
what I am interested in is a balanced portable DAC/AMP which there are only a couple that I know of..
Mr2pint.
I think I misunderstood your question.
