    I’m so glad you put out this video! I’ve been doing this for years … cleaning up and cutting foliage back so the plant looks tidy after it blooms. I love to see new fresh growth mid season. I’m so particular about my garden, now I know I was doing the right thing all along! Yay!! 🦋

      Thanks! It's not necessary, but we think they look better when cleaned up, so we thought we'd share. Thanks for watching!

    Am so grateful i found your channel since I'm in North Georgia, right on Chattanooga Tennessee line, i knew when you said middle Tennessee I could go by your planting times, always hate when I watch a whole video on a certain flower and find out they live in New Mexico or Maine,etc😅

      I hear you, but that's kind of what makes them special, if they bloomed all year, we probably wouldn't appreciate them as much! 😀

    I chuckled when you said you have used a weed eater to trim them. I haven’t YET. But I have been known to use a lawnmower to trim back my irises. 😊 We moved a couple of years ago and are trying to get a new bed of day lilies started. Thank you for your videos!

    We’re originally from SoCal … this is our 3rd Spring and Summer in our new home in southern Middle TN, and (finally) starting our garden from an absolute blank yard. Day lilies are one of my favorites and was SO excited to find out how well they thrive here! I’m so happy to have found your channel - especially interested in propagating and overwintering in our new climes.

      Welcome to Tennessee! (We're in East Tennessee just outside of Knoxville) In terms of daylilies, you'll be able to grow many more varieties than you would have in SoCal. Enjoy!!

    My Lilly beds have thinned out over the years. I removed all the spent flower stalks and leaves. Would fertilizer help them grow fuller for next year?

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  3 месяца назад

      Possibly. They may be overcrowded, too. If they have plenty of space, fertilizing might be just what they need. We usually recommend fertilizing in the spring before they begin to bud out but if you want to fertilize now it should be fine as long as you avoid getting on the foliage (it can burn the leaves) and water it in well.

    I had this question just today….can I cut back the foliage to make the daylilies look better? So thank you for answering this!
    Now, can they be divided at this time too, or is it better later in the fall or in early spring when they are emerging from the soil?

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  Год назад +2

      Fall is a great time to divide, the plants will have time to get established over winter and be ready to bloom next summer. But early spring is good as well.

      @@OakesDayliliesI always read some of the comments so I can learn as much as I can about a plant, I also Google the plant if I've never planted before,
      So you answer my question, when you answer this person's question,I was trying to find out if I could decide mine in the fall, or if that was to late, thank you for the answer and as always Happy Day Lillieing🫶🙏🌺🌺🌺

    I have a Stella D'oro re-bloomer. Should I cut the foliage in between blooms? thanks.

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  Год назад +2

      Good question! No. Just wait until the end of the season before trimming back the foliage.

    How do you treat European fungus on the lilies?

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  Год назад +1

      I'm not familiar with that, I would assume just treat it with a general purpose fungicide (make sure it's labeled for daylilies or ornamentals).
