    Placing the mono switch makes more sense in the phono preamp. My tube system in the family room I use a Puffin dsp phono preamp by Parks Audio which gives me so much versatility for recording vinyl to digital, mono switch, noise reduction, different phono eq settings, RIAA, all the early pre RIAA settings. My high end system in the living room however I like sticking to pure analog and use a Dynavector P75 mk III, Denon DP-59L, and AMG Teatro low output moving coil. Don't be afraid of digital processing for phono since it is done at high resolution 96k 24 bit.

    Even with a modestly priced system as I have, two turntables with mono and stereo cartridges is essential for getting the best fidelity out of my record collection. I do appreciate these q and a videos even though I know that much of it is directed at a higher priced clientele.

    What I do for the few mono records I have is figure out which channel has the most noise on it (always seems to be right channel) then take a y-adapter, hook to left channel from turntable and then to both channels on amp. Mine is easily accessible for this when needed, but may not be convenient for others. But cuts noise out greatly .

    Even better than a stereo/mono switch is a rotary selector switch
    for stereo, mono, reverse, left to both, right to both, and maybe one or two other choices.
    My HH Scott Stereomaster 260 (solid-state integrated amplifier, mid-1960s) has one and it's very useful.
    The cost of such a switch is really not that much, and it doesn't need any active electronics to support it.
    Given a tape loop (another thing missing from far too many components these days!),
    a person could connect a homemade switch of any desired design,
    but it's SO much easier if one is included in the preamp by the manufacturer.

    Great explanation... Thanks Paul!!
    My old Nakamichi receiver had a mono switch, but it only effected the FM tuner.
    It was good for improving the sound of weaker stations.
    One other thing it had for phono, was a subsonic filter... for eliminating turntable rumble below 20hz. I've seen a few modern phono stages with this feature, including my Pro-ject Tube Box S2. When I bought the S2, I tried the subsonic filter right away....but did not hear any difference in the output from my Technics SL-1610 turntable... so I don't use the filter. Just another button I thought I had missed, but didn't really need after all.

Just tied a few OFC speaker strands around the Left and Right channel and some more around the L/R ground on the back of my Stock cart which has a conical stylus. Works treat. When things transitioned to digital, it became much easier to just do it in the player software. That way, it's done mathematically with no circuitry involved to introduce noise and distortion in the process. It brings up a question though that bothers me. Is "mono = (right + left) / 2" really the best way to make mono from stereo? If something is on both channels equally, it makes an output signal that is twice the voltage than something only in one of the two channels, but with power, that would mean 4 times the power for something in both channels vs. just one and not the other. If something is on just one channel and not both, should it be half the power instead of one fourth the power? Thoughts?

    • @ThinkingBetter
      @ThinkingBetter 4 года назад +2

      For any sound that is equal in both channels, the sum of the channels divided by two maintains the original voltage to each speaker thus is the most accurate formula to maintain the sound volume as it was in stereo mode.

    • @marianneoelund2940
      @marianneoelund2940 4 года назад

      Switching in a mono mix like that would produce no change for a voice or instrument that was panned to center, that is, their sound still goes to both speakers at the same amplitude.
      For a source that was originally panned to only one channel, it's true that the amplitude is cut in half - but then it also ends up going to both speakers instead of just one. I don't think you would notice a change in relative amplitudes.
      But another question is how different a mono signal being reproduced by two separate speakers, is from a mono signal coming from just one speaker.

    If you’ve got a detachable headshell and an extra cartridge, you can wrap some very thin copper wire around the 2 +’s and the 2 -‘s which makes it a mono cartridge of sorts. I’ve got a nice phono preamp (Tavish Classic) that has no mono switch on it. I do that, and just pop in the mono cart and give it a quick set up for mono records. It greatly reduces surface noise and sounds much better than just using a stereo cart.
    That’s just one option, which I know won’t work for everyone, but it’ll work for a some at least.

    I wish someone could technically states exactly what the “mono” switch setting and circuit on a vintage preamp actually does or attempts to do. Granted, the mono circuit probably varies by brand and manufacture…but the “effect” that they attempt to achieve in a mono circuit must be fairly similar. Nonetheless, it is obvious to me that a mono switch and circuit in a vintage preamp cannot possibly achieve the same result as using a dedicated mono cartridge and stylus. A true mono stylus will track far more accurately in a mono record groove than a stereo stylus…and a mono cartridge will far more accurately create a true mono sound to two separate channels. Further, you don’t even need the mono switching circuitry on a preamp if you simply buy a mono cartridge and stylus. You can playback in stereo mode and both channels will be the same in both channels from the cartridge all the way to your speakers. Sure it requires changing the cartridge and stylus…but I have a dedicated mono cartridge and stylus set-up on a separate headshell that takes a minutes to change.

    • @m.9243
      @m.9243 4 года назад

      @Fat Rat
      Re: cost, yes of course, it is a factor however, it could be offset as most modern designs use electronic balance adjustment (without the use of a pot by regulating the gain of each channel electronically), which YES, it could add a bit to the cost but not as much as physical audiophile pots that - each - can cost hundreds of dollars.
      Signal degradation is an issue of course but it's more relevant to older equipment that did use physical switches in the signal path (...old Audio Research preamps did this and they had a "direct" bypass switch to eliminate the problem). Again though, electronic switching circuits would have minimal effect in purity of signal or at least, not audible enough to worry about.
      Overall though, I understand where you're coming from ( simplicity, less is more..) and I also subscribe to this. ...but, it's bloody good to walk to my BP25 and adjust the balance sometimes or invert the phase for some recordings that have been recorded with inverted phase.

    • @m.9243

      Yes, that's the key word, "subjective".
      At club meetings I hear (sometimes) some speakers, amps, whatever.. that sound like shyte but, over a coffee brake, some ppl can't stop ranting about how ...good they are!
      So yes indeed, it all depends on what the listener likes and expects. And each one of us has different priorities and expectations.
      That's why I am carefull _never_ to pass critisism on someone's setup. If it good enough for him, it's good enough for me. Rule of thumb..

      If your car's engine is out of alignment, in any way, you can tell when you drive it. Not getting every turntable setting correct is like having an engine problem. Once you hear a properly set-up turntable, then good records will be quiet, smooth, deep, spacious, and a delight to drive.
      Note that 80% of vinyl has sub-par sound quality. 15%+ has very good sound quality. Perhaps 2% has amazing to-die-for sound quality. It is the last 2%, when combined with a turntable as described above, that always beats digital.
      The combination of sub-par vinyl and a not properly set-up turntable is the leading contributing reason why digital almost always sounds better than vinyl. Most people will simply not jump through all of the vinyl hoops, and I don't blame them. They are unaware of vinyl's potential. But for people that are aware, it is one of the reasons why great turntables are still being manufactured today.
      Also, there are many great songs that do not exist on digital, unless you are willing to download a crummy youtube version of someone playing a record.
      Cheers!

      @Fat Rat What points do you not agree with my comment?
      I know more than the average person on this topic. But I also know that I am not always right and can always learn.
      I would appreciate hearing your views.
      Cheers!

    I can't remember the last time I listened to a mono record.

      Last week I listened to Disraeli Gears. The mono mix is way better than the stereo mix. Hendrix’s Are You Experienced, Donovan’s Mellow Yellow, The Beatles Sergeant Pepper, Revolver.... all better in the original mono mix than the original stereo mixes.

      @Fat Rat I guess I was listening to records of records; that is digitised copies of my vinyl records. Having to change the record every 20 minutes, or so (15 for Bob Dylan) is a PITA. Especially when you’re as arthritic as I am...

      @Fat Rat That would entail paying to listen to music I’m already entitled to listen to for free. I’m far too tight for that ;-)

      If it's the perfect mono system with the best recordings beat any stereo system of any price and give you a wider soundstage
