What Vader said without saying a word was, “Choose your next words carefully. Tarkin's assumption of command over the death star was a direct attack on Imperial Authority. No doubt, Tarkin believed that with the ultimate weapon in his command, he could secure the line of succession to the throne or even usurp it. The Emporer would have never allowed anyone but himself to have direct control over his ultimate weapon. Krennic was the sort of bureaucratic figure who could have been easily controlled from the throne. He had no base of power of his own except what had been delegated to him. A Grand Moff on the other hand, and essentially the senior oversector governor in the whole Empire, was in a position to control a bit too much.

    Vader uses a Bacta tank to try to heal his wounds. According to other Star Wars media, Bacta has miraculous healing properties even healing Mando's head injuries with just a spray. But here, the Bacta hardly helps Vader with his injuries. My theory is that the corrupting nature of the dark side towards his body negates any form healing that Vader gains from his Bacta immersion.

      I take a more personal view-I suspect Vader only uses bacta to heal life threatening injuries or treat deadly infections. He doesn't 'enjoy' himself, or use it for relaxation, not even to ease his pain much. That would make him a relatively poor Sith, as his crippled state relies entirely upon the dark side of the force to keep him going. If he spent too much time in Bacta he'd likely never leave. And let's be honest-he probably doesn't like the time in his head spent meditating. He's always preferred action.
      I wouldn't be surprised if he knows there is some guy in his fortress who calculates exactly how much bacta he uses and how long he spends in the tank and reports it to Palpatine if he seems to becoming too lax...just another set of eyes on him from his 'old friend'.

I understand the stressful situation he is in, the fear he is feeling knowing Vader can destroy his neck from across the room, then finally the relief he feels knowing he is still in command, struggling to breath for air.
    Krennic thought he could level up to Vader, forcing Vader to admit he is still in charge & then he realizes, "Oh crap, I can't breath, what's happening?! Vader has my throat!" I would have just said, "Yes, my lord." And ran out of the room to the nearest bathroom to change my shorts. Notice how Vader is holding his fingers, he HAS Krennic's larynx in his fingers. You are so right to credit Ben like that. While I feel James as Vader is the greatest feature of this franchise, Ben is such a phenomenal actor and presence himself, even in the company of the Dark Lord himself. He makes sure, at least with what minimal benefit of the doubt he is allowed by Vader, to contend against his treatment and argue his proficiency and it made Krennick so much more enjoyable and substantial than just being random cog in the machine #22 who gets force choked like all the others. At least he's Director Krennick who gets force choked like all the others. And it's Ben who brings that home.

    I interpret Vader's final line as saying, "You're still in command... for now. But screw up one more time, and you will be easily replaced."
    After all, for all of Director Krennic's ambitions, what he and a great many of Imperial officials tend to forget is that they serve the will of the Emperor.
    If the Emperor wills it, they will be promoted to a higher position; conversely, if the Emperor wills it, they will be cut down (and if Vader's around, literally) and replaced with someone else.
    To place yourself on a pedestal higher than the Emperor is tantamount to treason in a totalitarian society like the Galactic Empire, so one must always be care to keep their ambition in check, lest they end up dead.

      Too many of these officials are more concerned about their own career advancement instead of serving the interests of the Empire first and foremost. It usually ends very poorly for them.

    Vader: I'm necessary evil.

  • @darthviriditas7669
    @darthviriditas7669 3 года назад +2510

    This scene purely defines Vader. He speaks with standard formality and hes polite, which creates a subconscious feeling of superiority and yet you can tell hes pissed. "You seem unsettled" he knows what hes doing and Krennic knows too, but Krennic is also aware of what the man behind the suit is capable of. Hes aware that his life is on the table and that every move he makes has to be calculated or his lungs could be crushed flat. Krennic plays it off with the response that hes pressed for time, which Vader turns the response on him. Despite apologizing, you can tell that he isnt sorry in the slightest and follows up with Krennic having to explain his errors and Vader knows he isnt the only one that Krennic will have to talk to. Simply walking up to Krennic puts him on a state of defense because that's just what Vader is, he doesnt have to physically hurt anyone because his reputation is just that legendary. The actual irl audience has had years to watch the movies, read the books and play the games with Darth Vader in it. We already know the impact that he had on pop culture and media. Think about if he was real and we were in this part of star wars. Vader currently a symbol of power and strength for the empire, a ghost story for the public, and a metaphorical flare gun to tell rebels that death is upon them. Can you say that simply hearing someone breath through a mask is iconic? No. Its who's doing that breathing and when you know the sound that follows them. It creates an atmosphere that just sends chills down your spine...alright I'm done fanboying over this scene

      I agree except at this point in time Vader isn’t as known and legendary as we may think. Part of it is projecting our memory of him from Empire and Jedi back to this point in time when he’s still the Emperors dark enforcer who the Imperial Military as a whole aren’t completely familiar with. If this was the case Admiral Motti wouldn’t dare mock Lord Vader’s beliefs in front of a board of high ranking imperial officials. At this point he still somewhat answers to Tarkin. He’s mysterious and strange to most of the Imperials, save for Tarkin. However by Empire he’s in charge of the Imperial Fleet and has far greater power and agency. (This Vader has enough power at this point to use significant resources to search for Luke across the galaxy ) clearly during the time in between, The Emperor has had to double down on the night of the Imperial Military because of the failure that was the destruction of the Death Star. (The Emperor dissolved the senate once the Death Star was operational because he was ready to become an all out despotic ruler) and with it The loss of Tarkin who wielded immense power. (Functions pretty much as the main villain of ANH) So by Empire Vader is wielding that might. And by ROTJ Vader is so known and feared that Moff Jerjerrod literally gulps as he arrives. I think the Vader a lot of us think about is that Vader because he’s the most Badass in terms of power but a lot of us forget his side arc during the OT. (This probably chalks down to the creative process and developing a character from space wizard samurai enforcer to twisted tragic mechanical man

      Vader isn't stupid. He understands why Krennic wanted an audience with him. He also indirectly answers Krennic's question by still calling him "director" at the end(and you can see Krennic smile a bit as he starts to stand). He understands the politics and ultimately seems to sympathize with Krennic a little bit, he just doesn't like the boot-licking attitude of someone disturbing him just to play "mommy said no so let's ask daddy" games(basically Tarkin taking power from him so he goes running to Vader to try and get that power back).
