Herbert, who was born on March 10, 1998, in Eugene, Oregon, went to Sheldon High School and participated in baseball, basketball, and football there. In the third game of his junior football season, he broke his leg, which made the recruiting process more difficult. He rushed for 543 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior while also passing for 3,130 yards and 37 scores. Despite being selected first team all-state team and winning offensive player of the year in the Southwest Conference, he initially did not receive any scholarship offers from any prestigious colleges. Before Nevada and Oregon followed with exclusive FBS offers, Northern Arizona, Portland State, and Montana State extended offers. Oregon received Herbert’s commitment in October 2015.

As a Chargers fan I’m glad we got him. He is a lifelong fan of the Chargers so I feel like we won’t lose him. He is who I wanted in 2020 if we couldn’t have Burrow. Of course I think Herbert overall is more talented than Burrow now but as it looks right now 2020 was a great QB draft.

Well he's broken nearly every record for a quarterbacks first two years in history. And as great as Patrick Mahomes is, he sat on the bench for a whole year. Herbert sat on the bench for one game and 30 seconds. The last one to fall will be the record he breaks of Andrew Lucks in the next few games.
