- Join us again for another entry in our Lost Tower Diaries as we take you for a walk around our bottom field, visit our ancient oak and try to save a fallen horse chestnut tree by taking cuttings.
Living in Scotland in a 300-year-old country house. This is a record of our life renovating an historic house in Scotland and using our land as a homestead to enable us to live as sustainably as we can - almost off grid!

Every significant piece of land has a very old tree who imparts knowledge to the younger trees. It’s known as the Wisdom Tree. Your ancient oak is your Wisdom Tree.
Hi from Johannesburg south Africa. Dip the cuttings in honey. That will increase growth but also prevent rotting as you plant the fresh growth

If this does not work, you might try air layering. All you need to do is scrape the new bark off onr side of a new growth, dust with rooting compound then wrap with moist sphagnum moss. Then wrap with plastic secure with tape, or string.
Great minds! That way you get to start with roots. I love that method!
Make sure to put rooting compound on the bottoms so they will grow roots otherwise they won’t be able to sustain growth.
That's the way I would do it too. Also watch for growth off the roots of the fell tree. If they grow all you need do is chop the new growth and bury that root section to propagate the tree. Good luck! deb

We live in Australia on the edge of a small country town We only have a quarter of an acre but every inch is used My daughter lives with us with now five grandchildren We are in our 70s and will never get to see Scotland but my husbands ancestors originated from there. Mine from Ireland I loved seeing what it’s like where you live. You are so blessed to live there and have each other.
when i was kid i stood in dog poop. and i used a stick to scrape it off, and because it stunk i stuck it in the ground, 15 years later its a big tree, i dont know what tree it is but i always think about my dog poop tree when i see these types of videos lol
Isn't nature just the best thing to lift your spirits. To see that poor old tree blown over in the storm was very sad...but look at the way it still clung on. Shooting out saplings and no doubt feeding lots of little creatures that most would dismiss in a heart beat. The old oak tree with the little mose was so lovely. As a child my friends and i used to picnic under an old horse cestnut tree not unlike that one. It had a massive trunk on it and sat right dead centre of a corn field. I cried when it was cut unceremoniously to make way for a council housing. I could not understand why they cut it down. It could have stayed on the estate and made something beautiful, amoungst the rows of similar flat looking houses. A nod to the beauty that was once there.
I was so happy to see your cuttings took hold. Beautiful trees in a little wooded area at the bottom of your land. A place for wild life to thrive. Something for futcher genterations to admire.
That green house pen thing your building, would have had a kick from me by now. 😂 How irritating it is when you buy goods and they aren't made to a good standard. I mean, what use are nuts and bolts, if they don't fit. 🤦🏼

Beautiful video I love trees as well, my parents stay in the borders, they have 2 acres of woodland, they lost a lot of trees to Storm Arwen😢 my mum has grown trees from seeds and acorns, I now have 20 oak trees in my garden, some are just saplings and one is over 20 years old as well as many other trees.

🌳I’m not an arborist but I do know about nurse logs. Your tree is a nurse log. Don’t remove all of the new growth! Let the shoots develop on the old tree.
Definition: nurse log is a fallen tree which, as it decays, provides ecological facilitation to seedlings. Broader definitions include providing shade or support to other plants. Some of the advantages a nurse log offers to a seedling are: water, moss thickness, leaf litter, mycorrhizae, disease protection, nutrients, and sunlight.

If there are square holes, then it's probably for square shank dome ended bolts (to lock them in place whilst tightening the nuts) so there are likely some bolts missing still 😬 I love taking cuttings of trees and I hope the horse chestnuts live! If you were more local to me, I have a bunch of young horse chestnuts from conkers buried by the local squirrel in our garden 😂 It's nice to see ash trees seeding too as they grow quite mighty (provided die-back avoids them!) You both live in a real oasis there!
Yes, it has square end bolts, but the square holes were too big
In Ontario, Canada, we've lost hundreds of ash trees, due to the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive species.😱😢 So the ash tree may go the way of the elm, which we lost to Dutch Elm disease 50 or 60 years ago. 😭
@@noraleestone2859 dutch elm disease has wiped out most of our elm in the UK too. Sadly, most things non native are human introduced and people still deny that we do any harm 😕

Your oak tree! If I had such a magical tree I would celebrate every solstice by visiting it! I'd probably hang fabric and bead strings as offerings.
Just a thought. Wood cut from this beautiful tree shaped and highly polished might make beautiful jewlery. Who wouldn't want a beautiful piece of ancient history hanging about their neck?!

Aw, I know how bad it hurts when you lose a tree. Especially, a very old tree. We had to cut one down this year and I cried when it fell. I love your new channel and the other two, of course!

I am really enjoying this new channel, you have such an idyllic and beautiful area of land that i actually find it very peaceful watching you both carry out tasks in such a wonderful setting. The music you play is beautiful and goes very well with the scenery. It must be hard work keeping up an area like that, but you are doing a great job. I really love the idea of giving back to nature and making changes that help the creatures around us, we are on earth for such a short time in the grand scheme of things, and what we choose to do with our little (or big) plots of land can make a big difference. I very much look forward to seeing some of the projects you have mentioned in the future.

I think because it fell right by the water some branches pushed into the wet soil and started rooting, so the tree is now getting water through different rooting system, It's like those plastic root forms you can buy, only this happened naturally. Don't remove the old stums and wood, that fallen tree might just surprise you and keep growing. I have seen this in Palm Springs California, they deliberately cut down Mesquite trees and let them root in the same manor creating a living wind shield /wall. It's amazing to see! Those plastic root forms are a great idea, you can easily create hundreds of trees just from the branches of a single living tree or plant, it is a good way to clone wild berry bushes, roses, fruit trees, even create a whole forest of Oak trees from your one oak tree! all kinds of trees and plants the options are endless! They also make a liquid root starter and powder. You dip the wet ends of your cuttings into them and usually wrap the ends in cotton or something to hold the root starer on them then place them it a wet dirt for rooting, I have used both for rooting pussy willow bushes and roses. I love your property so beautiful! Yor shwoos always makes me smile, they are so curious aren't they! I am so glad your cuttings are growing! I can see how frustrating putting together those green houses are. I have a friend who made a good sized green house from salvages windows and doors, I am envious of you both! I now live on a 4th floor in the city, no lawn or area to grow anything, I wish for the days to be back on a farm again. I am wondering if you may want to consider getting a bush hog for that grass? I think it would be so much easier to cut all that and a lot quicker too. Love your new rake!

A gentle suggestion: while it's interesting to see the day-to-day of your homestead, I don't really feel like I understand your overall vision for this place, and what you want it to become. I would love to see a video that explains that in a little more detail.

You have a beautiful property there. That oak tree is beautiful and pretty big. Good to see that the cuttings you took from the oak and the willow tree was growing well. Trying to put together the shwoo pen seems hard to get set up. I might get one to have chickens in.
Your property is just magical, a lot of work but worth it to live in all that green beauty. So glad your cuttings are thriving, especially the Horse Chestnut, what a lovely old tree to lose to weather and age. That Shwoo pen is a real headache ! I’d love to know some of the history of your lovely property. It looks to me as though your home perhaps sits on a man made mound and I wonder if there’s any archaeology in the ground in front of your house. (Could be I’ve been watching too many archaeology programmes!)

Another way of getting a cutting that has roots is called layering and/or air layering. This is where you leave the cutting semi attached or completely attached to the main stem and basically “take the dirt to them”. If you Google “plant reproduction by layering” or air layering you will find loads of info and pictures telling you how this would work.
Willows will root in water, grow almost like weeds....

When I do soft wood cuttings or even hard wood I dip the ends into honey as it helps to stimulate new growth. Once done add a large drink bottle over the top without the lid on. I have done it this way in the past for rosemary cuttings as well as star jasmine.
You will find that the old tree has sent down new roots from the side of the trunk and over time new trees will grow up. I can not remember what this type of growth is.
Going by the width of the trunk it’s about 100 plus years old, I think it’s for every meter in diameter it’s a 100 years so it could be between 100-20) years old. I think it’s a door mouse that jumped down as they have been making a come back after being in the critical listing if endangered animals. They like to make nests in hollows to have their babies but when they hibernate they snuggle down into the leaf litter at the base of tree roots.
I just found out the other day that the acorns the oak tree drops are not it’s children but it’s grandchildren 🙀🙀it has some odd way of generating the flowers and the seeds, the flower part produces some odd bud and then from that it changes the following year into an acorn, each acorn takes 2 years to create a acorn that can be planted.

The draw back to many of these types of kits bought online have the same failing, I ended up going to the hardware store and looked into the pipe fitting joints to make my own in the end. I also added long lengths of timber along the sides to add weight to the frame and to have support for the rolled up wire that went around mine. I thought at least it gave the bare bones of what I really wanted and was able to add onto it. I placed timber on both sides of the wire around the base but kept it sat on the metal pipes so the wood was not coming in contact with the dirt, this gave added strength to the bottom to help stop critters from getting in under the wire.

For good rooting ,you can put willow branches in water use the water as a rooting agent after 48 hours.

these things always cause problems when we think we are buying a good product and something lets you down on the last leg. I am so glad you managed to get cuttings off your ancient oak so it will live on now for a few more hundred years. As to the willow cuttings they will actually take in just water. If you cut some pencil thin sticks cutting straight across at the bottom and on a slant at the tops. Cut into lengths of about a foot and push two thirds in the ground and they will root by the spring. Love these Lost Tower Diaries keep up the good work. Stay safe and I hope you are both fully recovered now.
Try starting one in the ground without the pot. The pots get hot on the roots. I hope you can safe the tree, keep us posted

I bought myself a electric ⚡️ rechargeable Lawnmower it is a dream to have so much easier and so well made a Mikita it’s awesome 😎 I had to save up for it but worth the investment came with 4 batteries I love 💗 it made mowing so much better not easy at 68 but I managed

The tree could be turned into Hugelcultur.. A mound you make by leaving the large trunk and piling up layers of soil, mulch (leaves)limbs & twigs until you have a huge mound that becomes a raised bed that you can plant wildflowers, vegetables, & berries
In early spring I make willow water out of new growth with buds on it and use it to water my cuttings and it acts like a rooting hormone. I also coat the bottom of my cuttings with diluted honey to prevent bacterial growth. I have not tried to root horse chestnut before since I have them popping up all over the place, but I wish you luck!
Every year I set my garden up knowing very well that I am doing nothing more than setting the deer’s annual buffet.

12:22 We can’t punish an innocent tree by cutting it down. Even though that big oak tree may have had some morbid involvement in its lifetime, it has probably sheltered and saved so many birds and critters in the hundreds of years it has survived. ❤
