    I'd absolutely keep the fummins and make it a labor of love just like everything else you own. You have the capability to make it exactly what you want and that includes converting it to a manual transmission if that is what you really want at the end of the day. Sure you can go out and buy something shiny and new but haven't we already learned recently enough together maybe that isn't necessarily the best option. At the end of the day you do what makes the most sense to you but my money's on making the fummins the best that it can be.

    • @someyoungguy6990
      @someyoungguy6990 Год назад +1

      I agree! And for what it's worth a tow rig should never be shiny as everything will happen to it. Imagine working on it with fresh paint you would stress so hard at scratching it, or you get a random dent at a meet, I would go off for sure! Old and a little ugly is what you want, dents and scratches should make good adventure stories not tears and stress.

    As a guy who has always played the “new truck” game, I fully advocate for building your own vision of the perfect tow pig. OEM’s design to cover as many end users as they can, so the things you see as super important might be overlooked. Every single thing you want to accomplish with your tow rig can be done through fabrication and aftermarket, then you have the knowledge of how correct it is because you did it yourself. I think you have an excellent starting point in your fummins. That iteration of the Cummins has excellent longevity and reliability as well as aftermarket support, as does the Ford trans. The truck platform is reasonably solid too, with good creature comforts. Build what you have. You’re already 75% done with what a lot of guys would consider the “ultimate tow rig”

With a DCR Pump Conversion installed in both, we feel great about taking long trips and enjoying the ride. For what it's worth, we have had multiple reports of Ford honoring warranties with our Disaster Prevention Kit installed. I have one with about 87,000 miles on it and it's an 2007 model, and I have an 2011 with over 127,000 miles on it. Both were new and I have been the original owner and I do most of the general work ie; brakes, oil changes, plugs, filters and most common repairs. As I've done everything from rebuilding engines, automatic and standard transmissions, differentials, and axels, I'm like you in watching most mechanical issues. But, the aspects of having new on most systems wins the game.

    Unfortunately Ford, GM and Dodge all use the Bosch CP4 pump depending on the year range and they all suffer the same problem. The Cummins is just by nature easier to change because of the location on a straight 6. I did one on a 2013 Duramax. I changed all the rubber fuel lines because of age and difficulty to reach, changed the pump and injectors, but did nothing with the fuel tank and only blew out all the hard lines with brake cleaner and compressed air. I couldn’t afford the disaster kit. It’s been running fine for 15,000 miles now.

    I think one of the reasons you were fortunate enough to have your dealership write this up as a warrantied repair, is because of your RUclips channel. They probably figured that if they didn't warranty the repairs, as Ford commonly does with these trucks, they would get put on blast for being butt monkeys, and they didn't want to deal with the backlash. As for what to buy next, I know I'm going to be in the market myself, hopefully in the near future, for a diesel pickup, so I'll just tell you what I already have my eyes ready to look at. I'm thinking king cab, long bed, 4X4, Cummins Ram, but it cannot be any newer than 2006 because, I don't want to have to deal with DEF, or any fines for deleting it.

I also agree that it would have been better to have a truck not under warranty, then you fix it yourself. A visibly there's a little bit of water in the bottom of the barrel that killed the pump instantly. I tried a second pump and the same result. Not a solution for your car but my solution was to get an aquarium air pump and a t on the siphon hose. I have 150 ft of Polly something or another tubing that carries the oil to the big tank wherever that might be at my storage area. I've had problems moving the oil just because of a little water that couldn't get past the centrifical diesel pump. Cudos to Chris for helping you out! I used to be a Ford guy until I owned an '04 6.0L, it was a large pile and cost me a lot of money over 2 years and about 75K miles. I gave Ford a chance to make it right and they would not, so I bought my first Ram / Cummins in '06. It was head and shoulders better than any Ford I owned at towing, reliability, fuel economy, your name it. In 2014 I replaced my '06 with a new '14 Ram, it is even better and stronger than my '06 was. Currently the '14 has 172K miles on it and I would not hesitate to hook up my 5th wheel and go across country with it. If you're going to pull goose necks or 5th wheels, I would not recommend the mega cab as it is only available with a short bed. The 4th gen and 5th gen Rams have plenty of room in the crew cab and you can get a crew with the 8' bed.

      @@BruceDragon-sf1tr The fact that Ford still uses the CP-4 pump is all I need to know about their trucks. They intentionally use a inferior fuel pump and then stick the customer with the bill. In my eyes the best HD truck is the 2004.5-2007 2500/3500HD Sierra/Silverado's. I know you had a 2500HD Sierra after your first Dodge, I really liked that truck. By then they had fixed the injector issues that the early Duramax's had, and the transmissions are rock solid. The A/C systems are ice cold. The aftermarket is huge, with a lot of reputable companies making parts that are not just snake oil. The trucks drive and tow well. Small upgrades like a FASS fuel system, nice exhaust, intake, and off the shelf programmers, and those trucks are real workhorses. The interior can be modernized with a CarPlay radio, nice stereo, heated/cooled seats etc. You don't have any DPF or DEF to worry about. They are easy to work on. The market is very hot for them right now, and for good reason. My Dad's 2006 2500HD (crew cab, short bed, 4WD LT) is approaching 300,000 miles with very little issue. He bought it new in '06 and it has towed nearly since day 1. He has contemplated many times getting rid of it for a newer truck with more features and creature comforts, but never has.

      2 weeks I kneed my tail light and it shattered like it was paper thin glass. Couldn’t believe how cheaply made these componets are, but it’s not unique to GM. They all do it.

      @@GordonTurnerr I’m not going to argue that, but that’s also a major repair and a cab off situation, and a rare occurrence on these trucks. I know we all like to think we’d change our engines in any given parking lot because we are car guys. But the reality is most guys won’t be changing head gaskets on the side of the road unless it is a truly dire situation.

      Yeah ford Dodge and GM all use them. I feel like it needs to be stressed that it’s not an issue that is brand specific to Ford. There is more than enough evidence of 6.7 Fords being absolute work horses, it’s not that they’re bad trucks it’s just a bad component that is shared with other brands as well. It could have happened to any brand, and I’m sure the warranty would have gone the same way for any of the other brands as well. Dealers don’t like to spend money, doesn’t matter if it’s a Ford, Ram or Chevy
