I guess One thing I didn’t touch on is that this truck was was literally exactly half the cost of the 2020 superduty. The superduty was the only vehicle I’ve ever had a payment on. I did put a good amount down so I wouldn’t be upside down in it. But still I didn’t like that I didn’t truly own it. I know it’s fine and whatnot it’s not bad to finance. But I’m just not that person. I drove around $1000 daily for years to avoid a car payment. The only reason I did it this time was for the peace of mind. Which is fine anyway. So selling it. Buying this. Means no more payment. And this thing wasn’t much more than I can sell the fummins for. But needs far less stuff to be where I want it to be. So it’s actually cheaper in the long run for me than doing everything the fummins needs. Plus not having to try and upgrade the fummins in between needing to use it. I do plan to still fix up the fummins. And if I realize this was the wrong call. Then I got to use this as a temp tow rig to make building the fummins easier. Also if you want a chuckle. Go watch the video buying the superduty. I explain why I bought it and word for word what I said I was avoiding happened. Lol
I’ll never go back to a car payment, I hate them. I’ll stick with my $2500 Silverado until I can save up for something better. How many miles are on the new truck?
@@jacobjones784 yeah I made it this far in my life without it. Caved for the superduty for the reliability and warranty. Realized that was a joke. So I’m never going back. My motto was always if I can’t buy it outright. I can’t afford it. Interest rates were low so I sent it on the ford. But it irked me everytime I drove it that I didn’t truly own it. And it has 160k miles. A bit more than I wanted but it was localish and perfect for me otherwise.
Taylor I don't know if anyone has told you but get in touch with suncoast performance about the trans in the cummins, cleetus took his original tow rig "white buffalo" there and had them strengthen and tune the valve body. Don't know how close they are to you but they are in Florida. Maybe ask cleetus if he's not busy 👍
We all gotta be comfy. Whoever was in the back seat was always crammed next to the luggage. We do some long trips. Comfort makes such a big difference.
Yeah I really screwed up a road trip, simply by not having the head rests in the rear seats. Took em' out to fold the seats flat and they never went back in. They're back in there now though!
@codyroersma5612 i know, i dont get it, he spent so much money and time building the fummins, and he's so set on replacing it and hasnt even really used it much.
Hey Taylor, I towed a gooseneck for years with my mega cab. If you don’t want to modify the trailer, get yourself a pull right super glide hitch. When you turn, it actually slides the pin towards the back of the bed. You can have the trailer 90 degrees without hitting the cab. I was towing a 40’ trailer loaded to 14k. That hitch is beefy. Happy towing!
I'm a Dodge mechanic. As far as the problems these transmissions have really depends on which trans you have. if its the 68rfe they are prone to quite a few problems but they shift smooth and quick. The problems range from converters stuck in lock up too solenoids cracking the valve body like you mentioned. regardless upgrade the transmission cooling big time if you want it too live a long healthy life. Also when they do let go, they get very hot, very fast and can actually push the fluid out of the dipstick tube, land on the exhaust manifold and light on fire, so a locking dipstick is a must. if its the Aisin transmission they are pretty bullet proof but they shift like it too. As far as the rest of the truck you shouldn't have many issues, the turbo actuators go bad every now and again but that's literally a 30 minute job. the 3rd brake lights leak sometimes so just pull it off and give it a reseal now. also check the big body connector behind the fl fender liner, they are prone too water ingress and thus corrosion, take it off, chuck it full of dielectric grease and you're set. Good luck with the new rig!
I am going to agree with this guy and recommend listening to him. Do your time finding a good tuner, if not learn how to do it yourself. I know HP supports a good amount of diesels these days, and you are at least familiar with their platform. The Megacabs are amazing. Good choice my guy. Happy to see you kept the Fummins as well
The Aisin trans are bullet proof in comparison to other Dodge offerings. The shift can be changed with programming or valve body mods. They are Allison clones.
As former dirt series racer for 10 years if you can afford to keep the other truck do so back up tow rig is a real must I almost lost big sponsor if I would have missed the show. Keep up the awesome work
I've built a ton of 68rfe's, for what you're doing I dont think you need a billet valve body. Revmax bonded separator plate, buy the solenoid switch valve reamer kit and an oversize valve, drill the hole for added line pressure (you will need tuning for this) toss a new solenoid pack in there while you're at it. If you have access to a scanner check the OD clutch volume index (40-50 is ideal) and this will give you a general idea on the health of the internals. Get a billet nipple for the spin on filter. Also a good low stall 15 blade billet converter makes a huge difference. I would be more than happy to source parts for you and walk you through anything you need help with. They are actually very simple to work on.
I would preventively put a sonnex overdrive clutch housing since losing 5th and 6th gear the main issues with these transmissions other than the valve body warpage issues. Especially since you're going to be mainly towing in overdrive. The factory design clutches are so thin and only single-sided the sonnex kit addresses issues it doesn't make it perfect but definitely increases the surface area of the overdrive clutches.
I would also look into getting a billet flexplate for that kind of towing. I had one bend and break the transmission adapter plate. It was towing a gooseneck about the same size.
The sonnax drums are great, I have had better luck with them compared to several others. However, I don't suggest anyone have their first automatic trans experience be a 68rfe input drum lol. Taylor may have been in some autos before so idk, he's very talented so probably wouldn't have an issue. Also, while you're at the input drum might as well upgrade the 2C return spring retainer, then at that point you're pretty much building the entire trans. If your overdrive clutch CVI is in spec, fluid doesn't look scary, I would definitely do the valve body upgrades I mentioned above and then just enjoy it. Good trans tuning and a healthy valve body goes a long way in driveability and lifespan.
@@calebwilliamson7525 I dont see too many broken flex plates unless you're running a triple disc converter. On stock style dual disc converters I usually dont suggest a billet flex plate. A low stall billet converter is actually less likely to break the plate. Not as much RPM gap to bring together and the billet backing plate doesn't distort and put weird forces one the plate. Not that a good flex plate is ever a bad idea, I just don't see them as a necessity on most stock-ish trucks. However Anything that needs a triple disc also needs a billet flex plate, billet input and an upgraded input drum of some sort. Sonnax, revmax, suncoast etc.
Here's a wild idea. Extend the frame, slap on a long bed and have the best of both worlds. You can make it a series and use the Fummins until it's done. Don't tell me it wouldn't be freaking awesome!
@@nicholascole6939 I spent wayyyyy less than that. Which is why I bought it. Literally half the cost of my white ford. For a 4 year older truck with better options.
Biggest thing the local guys here in Australia do is a really big under bed trans cooler with twin push/pull fans on it. Change to the shatter proof heavy duty flex plate, higher grade flex plate bolts and lock up correctly rated torque converter to suit the towing duties this is being used for. Upgrade the solenoids, valve body, clutches and drums to billet. Put a deep finned pan on it with aftermarket drain. You will run almost double the trans oil with a radiator sized cooler, but preventing heat soak is the goal. Of course a trans retune is also going to make it live a better life. I’m all for extending the frame on this and removing add on hitch relocation bracket extensions as these are high stress high failure items that can cause you big hassle in the long run. Don’t over wheel the truck with heavy Alcoa type wheels as this just causes additional steering and suspension stress. A load helper bag system on the rear axle should be installed to improve towing and ride quality. Like someone already mentioned check all external wiring connectors and fill with dielectric grease to prevent corrosion from the humid Florida air. Upgrading ground straps is advisable. You may also want to have the ABS system flushed and recalibrated for towing as well. Now is also the best time to go completely through the heater and cooling system on this truck and put a slightly colder thermostat in it as it will want to run hot when towing long distances. Remove the grid heater unless you’re planning to travel into colder climates. In Florida I don’t see the need for it. Yep I’ve said a lot, but when you make an investment like this you want to do as much as you can to preserve it. Good luck Taylor
Literally every truck mechanic on the planet agrees that a ford truck with a Cummins engine and Allison trans is THE BEST truck you can get .. if you slapped an Allison in that fummins , you would quite literally never break down , all you have to do is an upgrade lift pump to supply enough fuel to the injection pump computer on top of the fuel pump on the side of the engine to keep it cool and you’re golden
My buddy did that always shifted erratic would be great then shift up on its own and just black smoke egts were super high too best would be a manual nv5600 or even g56
@@chrisley7919 yeah I thought long and hard about a G56 truck. That was the plan. But after driving one a bunch. It would suck after the novelty wore off on long trips.
That combo used to be sold as a new truck. It was called a Sterling. I avoided the teens duramax trucks because of the CP4 fuel pump and the fact they are 140 ft lbs less power when stock. I thought about a bulletproofed 2005 6.0 but luckily went with a 2020 fully loaded L5P duramax. The allison/gm 10 speed is great and I would rather push a duramax than listen to a cummins run, especially since all the cummins trucks I drove were dogs when unloaded. The duramax is extremely quiet even when towing and I would never have a short bed. CC LB is the only way to go. I was expecting Taylor to just keep driving the fummins, but I get wanting a more comfortable truck.
Just so you are aware. If I’m not wrong after 2014 the Cummins had grid heater bolts that would fall out and go into a cylinder. So just check it out and be safe.
Yes, the bolt that fastens the 12v cable to the isolator block the powers the heater element rots thru mid way and the bottom half gets sucked usually at the #6 cylinder. Banks engineering has a retrofit for this.
You could convert the trailer to fifth wheel and just get a slider fifth wheel hitch, so that way tongue weights where it needs to be driving, and then it can unlock and slide back for parking and what not. Our fifth wheel toy hauler we use a slider and it’s super convenient. Not as ideal as a long bed but it works well enough.
I feel that the Fummins would ride a whole lot smoother if you ditched that short sidewall tire setup. No sidewall flex = rough ride! I know some feel it looks cool, but I think it would look more clean cut with a good set of normal profile tires and wheels.
Said this on one of your last vids and I'll say it again, look into the new gasser Chevy and Fords, the 6.6L and 7.3L respectively, both are towing over 30K. You get pretty much none of the downsides of the new diesels and would still have the comfort and peace of mind of a newer truck. The fuel mileage is comparable and yet gas is cheaper, no crazy diesel emissions, DEF, DPFs, Regenerations, I can go on and on lol.
To think a gas job is ever going to out perform a diesel towing is hilarious. A diesel puts out twice the amount of torque at half the rpm. Gas motors belong in half tons not real trucks made for towing.
@smcox1991 Well I said it's comparable for what his goal is so I'm not sure what your going on about. A truck that tows 30k-40k is a truck that tows 30k-40k. I said everything else is better about a gas truck though which I will stand behind all day, and for you to debate is silly. Maybe if he starts hauling more than that he should get a big rig?
Need to get a Gen Y tongue for the gooseneck. Their torsion style gooseneck gets rid of a lot of road shock and also gives some offset back like you need. Also saves the trailer from a lot of shock keeping everything inside from getting knocked around.
RevMax Zero Flex HD/Tow Billet valve body w/ EFI Live TCM tuning. (Make sure you have the tranny tuned to RevMax’s specs to keep warranty.) I went with a BD deep trans pan and BD thermostat delete. Along with BD extra capacity diff covers. Get the CSP5 switch as well. - It’s a 5 position switch, but the 4th gen’s ECM can only store 4 tunes going the route I did. (Tow, economy, street and race.) My shift points where raised, so no more quick shift/lower RPM cruising. Took a while to get used to, but now I could never see going back. I tow locked in 5th and @ 65. Slow I know, but seems to be in the sweet spot both power, lower EGT’s and fuel economy. I highly recommend reaching out to Spencer from Dirty Diesel. He is a good dude. They work with CCS (Mitch Cooper) and they have great tunes. Over the years, I’ve needed tweaks to the tuning here and there and they have never once charged me. Just my .02 🤙
Check and recheck the wheels studs. My bro in law and my boss both have lost a wheel and had damage because of rams wheel stud issues. One was a 2014 and the other I believe is 2016. Only happens on the 2500 and 3500
I do wish my megacab was a normal crew cab with a long bed. It's nice to have the extra room sometimes, but typically it's a pain with trailers. The blind spot out the passenger rear is horrible. Can be a big problem backing up a trailer. I have to get out and look too often.
I have no idea why Dodge didn’t make a long bed mega cab. A dually is made for towing, so why not give it a bed length capable of towing a gooseneck or fifth wheel.
@@markbremmer8642 way too expensive for the banks intake plenum. Just use a basic delete plate with the stock intake horn. Where he lives a grid heater isn’t needed
Man that truck looks funny .. it’s a nice truck, I love the longhorns, but seriously the mega cab with the short bed just looks wrong .. a truck shouldn’t have a longer cab than it does a bed .. IMO an extended cab truck with reg bed, or full cab truck with a long bed is the way to go, that way you get that 1/3 cab 2/3 bed
I like Dodge, but man everything about that truck is ugly. The proportions, the colors, the chrome, the interior, everything screams old man with no tasted.
EXACLTY MY THOUGHTS. AND NOT TRYING TO BE MEAN OR ANYTHING BUT THAT RAM IS HIDOUS LOOKING COMPARE TO THE FUMMINS. ID NEVER GET RID OF THE FUMMINS HEEEEEEEEECK NOO. ID FIX IT UP AND MAKE IT MY MAIN TOW TRUCK, THING IS JUST SOOOO BEAUTIFUL AND IT LOOKS BAD ASS WITH HIS TRAILER VS THAT RAM
We have 2 17 3500’s both with over 400k pulling trailers their whole life, Aisin transmission has been absolutely solid and bulletproof so far, just change your fluid and filter occasionally and she’ll be fine
From a Chrysler dealer tech you definitely need to upgrade the cooling for the longevity of the trans. And I’ve done a few transmissions that are in tuned and deleted trucks and they end up blowing up pretty quick because the trans is already being pushed to its max behind the Cummins. Also it looks easy to work on but you still have to pull the cab to pull the head. You can barely get the valve cover off with how far under the cowel the engine goes. Make sure you keep up on the maintenance like fuel filters ccv filter and trans services since you are towing a lot and it’ll be a good truck
The transmission has always been the weak point of Cummins powered Ram trucks. If you upgrade the power any above stock it’s wise to upgrade the trans.
Dot is cracking down on those. Insurance companies too. If you never have a problem you’re good but there’s a reason Ram doesn’t sell one. Rules and regulations.
@@kevinbutler9786 Frame stretching isn't something to mess around with if you don't know what you are doing. He is a good fab guy, but there is a lot riding on getting that right.
@@mraycgz cracking down on what? LOL The DOT isnt cracking down on anyone who does a legit frame stretch on these mega cabs. Semi trucks are being stretched everyday and they go through scales daily. The reason Ram doesnt sell them is because its cheaper to use the same frames between these short bed mega cabs and the long bed crew cabs, they are the same sized frames.
Ive been here for many years enjoying your content. Ive liked so many videos that i cant keep a number of its been that many. I rarely comment. But always like and buy merch. I will continue to show as much support as possible. Keep producing the epic videos. All the best. Take care
after driving a fourth gen cummins, it's the top of my list. Modern enough interior to be comfortable for hours, yet old enough to be simpler and cheaper than a new truck. 100% my choice, especially with a mega cab and upgraded interior
Im pretty sad still, not because you got rid of YOUR own truck. Im sad just because of how everything played out with the new super duty, just wish that dealership handled everything better from the start. As a fomoco employee that actually works at the super duty plant, its sad to see customers have bad experiences. Hope the new dodge treats you well and meets all your expectations
I love watching your videos because I get to see my friends old 83-84 White money Calo SS. He passed away and he was supposed to leave me a car but it never did. He was way too young when he passed. Every time I see that beautiful car it makes me sad. But I love your videos. Thanks for showing it because that thing is amazing
Make sure you do the crankcase vent delete and clean your turbo. Run a catch can or vent to atmosphere as it doesnt make much oil. But it is currently dumping into your turbo. Which causes premature turbo failure. Just a FYI and on your 6.7 cummins
Missing a lot of crucial towing things with the new truck. Short bed, non high output, no aisin tranny. Should have waiting it out and got the proper rig
@@Taylordrifts We have 4 of the 21+ HO dodges and tow 20k trailers 5 days a week and haven't had any issues. Granted we aren't doing long hauls it's all in town work but they've been very reliable. We have a f450 as well and I'd take the dodge any day over the ford.
Im glad you stayed with a 6.7! Have you considered doing a Gale Banks grid heater fix? I cant remember if this year is affected but I'm pretty sure it is?
I was gonna say the same thing. Use the fummins as a support vehicle. If the tow-rig has a problem, you have a built-in backup on the road with you. Throw a cover on the bed and toss extra tires/wheels/whatever in there for some extra room even.
Taylor, im sure Im not the first to say it, but you need to get the 5th wheel slidder rack that they have for mega cabs. Also, those oem tail lights have a known issue for having codes and warnings on the dash when a single led goes out, but other wise works and functions normally. Get a half decent set of aftermarket lights and prevent the struggle. Other than that, those 4th gen trucks are awesome! Congrats on the upgrade!
I've seen it said here already but it's time for a long box conversion man. the "10%" of the time you'll need the angle are when it's going to count. do it! it's content and ultimately will end up paying for itself. Especially while the ferd is still kicking around.
In Australia all these tow rigs are dream cars. Hard to get and mega expensive. We also are very ‘stance’ orientated so I hope it gets some nice wheels.
i like the looks of the fummins better but an all OE tow rigs sounds like the better solution as on working on it. the engine its way cramp un in the fire wall and could potentially create issues with side of the road fix. i understand the move and well for long distance towing, the Ram is i believe to be the best option for side of the road and out of state issues
Get the hitch offset on the trailer. Don't mess with the hitch placement in the bed of the truck. It'll mess with the weight distribution / towing stability; moving the tongue weight even a small distance back behind the rear axle is going to the shoot the nose of the truck into the air (the further the hitch is moved back, the more the nose will rise).
My thing on that is. People pull much larger trailers. From behind the bumper. Yes the weight balance is different in a bumper pull. But my trailer is very light and small.
A single rear wheel could pull his weight trailer easily, move the weight of his trailer back 6-8" won't make much of a difference, I wouldn't do it with a 20,000lb trailer that has 4,000lbs of toung weight but for his needs it would be completely fine
@@Taylordrifts you might be surprised how much worse the truck drives with the weight further back. Could make it super bouncy going down the highway, similar to if you load your car to far back on the trailer. You could fabricate a new hitch for the trailer that goes further forward however much you need. I’ve known people who have done that
The problem is the maintenance on those is so expensive. Murder move (187 customs on RUclips) bought a Pete one. Needed a headgasket. Ended up costing him 30k to get it repaired at a shop on the trip. And a new one is like $4-500,000
@@Mouthy_Trucker I have a 2016 silverado that I've never had to touch at all. It drives perfect, tows perfect, and all the uppity gizmos in the interior all work perfectly. Just because your truck sucks doesn't mean they all do.
Great choice! Already deleted and has the CP3 instead of the problematic CP4 that took your Ford out. Make sure the grid heater bolt isn't rusting or just delete it altogether along with what you suggested for the transmission and you should have one of the most reliable tow pigs on the market.
If it has a 68rfe would definitely recommend doing a Revmax thermostat delete and probably get a bigger transmission pan. The pan with the cooling fins will help with cooling and so will the extra oil it can hold.
Small part of me is bummed about the Fummin's as I really enjoyed watching the build and I think it looks sick etc but I'm stoked you have something you like and that you think will work out better for you and the team. I hope you can finally get that piece of mind and start getting out to more events!
Hey Taylor, this is just a thought, but there is a company named ATS. They make a tansmission conversion kit, for the Cummins. If you wanted to swap in a Allison 1000 trans. I think there is a couple other company's, with similar conversion kits.Truck looks great by the way!!!
Do yall understand how special it is to have a friend that literally bought a mega cab strictly for friends comfort and luggage? Come on!! Top tier homie!!! Please keep showing love to the fummins.
Definitely would upgrade the turbo, those trucks are known for turbo actuator failure, knew this trucks was coming lol I saw it in the background on the sprinkler video .
Good for you man I may think the mega cab dually is the ugliest truck ever made proportionally wise because they don’t make that in a long bed, but your truck you seam stoked and that’s all that matters! Hope it brings you no issues and smooth sailing in your adventures!!
There is a company, I think in CO, that will convert a mega cab into a long bed by extending the frame if its a must (I love my mega cab and would consider the stretch if I get a heavier goose/5th)
Besides the shortbed, it is the absolute perfect tow rig in my opinion. Might need a little bit of a trans tune, but overall, it is pretty much the best decision you can make!
After watching most of the Fummins playlist, this bums me out. The joy on Taylors face when he started driving the Fummins, while shouting about how it's his dream truck, and everything was exactly how he wanted it, because he built it that way. I feel like the Fummins could be exactly what is needed (without the awful semi wheels). This reminds me of myself, though, when I see something new and shiny that I absolutely must have, except that I would have stupidly sold the old for the new that is worse. Or.maybe it's just for the views, who knows.
feel like this is one of those situations you want something so bad and know its short comings, but you talk yourself into it and find a way to justify it even though you know the choice doesn't quite make sense.
As far as the megacab portion of things. Probably right. That was a want more than anything. But the truck itself. I don’t think so. I weighed the pros and cons of every single option. This made the most sense for me. Practically. Same truck. Base model. Longbed. Stick. Best option. But I know I’ll get tired of having to shifted on a super long drive.
@@Taylordriftsyea I made the decision to get a 93 Chevy Silverado with a 5 speed because I thought it would be so cool to have a manual truck and I do think it is. Well I put a 6.0 lq4 in it and drive it everywhere and probably have put over 20k miles on it last year and while I still love it I do wish I have something a bit less annoying to drive. It’s loud and cramped being a single cab and ofcourse it gets a quite a bit annoying to shift especially on long drives or driving downtown with a lot of traffic. I think you made the right choice and the truck looks like a beast!
I've always tried to have a manual; I like the control and for mechanical sympathy. Even living in a big city my daily was a stick, the only time it sucked was when the slave stared to go bad and I practically lifted my butt off the seat to push the clutch in... while in rush hour traffic. Automatics are fine except for the fact that they always fail especially if you get a used vehicle, it's just a timebomb; you don't know if the previous owner took care of it. New vehicles aren't even worth getting, the price and depreciation is unjustifiable.
@@77marioland I will admit I do feel more confident in my manual transmission then I do with my other transmission especially the 4L60e I’m running about 400 hp through. But it is a little less convenient. But having direct control of the gears is a huge plus. Plus I feel as if I get much better mileage probably due to both direct control of the gears and also less loss in power.
I ended up upgrading the lift pump and turbo with a fleece system on my cummins tow rig. If you have the asin trans you are in a better position for not really needing an upgrade. I love my dodge but I'm soon in the market for an upgrade ram. My 3rd gen has a cancer rust issue that I'm getting tired of fixing.
You can always extend the frame and get a 8ft box and not have to worry about hitting the cab. There's kits out there for it! The issue with moving the hitch back is it puts the weight behind the rear wheels, which partly defeats the purpose of the gooseneck.
Probably best to keep the fummins even if the new truck proves itself, maybe put more into it over time and that way you have a backup that is exactly what you want in case the mega cab decides to unprove itself later. It is sad to see the fummins getting put on the sidelines after it did its job faithfully and without fail tho
@ 27:00 you say it shifts early. But as i understand it, diesels make power at lower rpm unlike gas engines making power at higher rpms. Is my information outdated? I'm sure when its loaded it wont shift so early because you can still lug a diesel... below 1000 rpm is probably lug territory empty.. and 1100-1200 rpm loaded.
I have a short bed ford and a exiss cattle trailer that is seven foot wide and square on the front and I installed the b&w 4 inch extension in the bed and it works great.
As the guy that tried to convince you to get a LBZ, I will still say I’m happy for you. My dad has a 6.7 mega cab. We both just towed 8 hours on a trip last week. He’s not had any problems other than the body falling apart piece by piece. He has had good luck with his trans, but we all know that’ll come up at some point. It’s always a compromise somewhere and I’m glad you found what you’re willing to live with. Best of luck and congrats!
Yeah body falling apart. His is a 3rd gen but rusting everywhere and plastics breaking. Keeps on running though. Yes GM ifs rides the best but not the best option for a plow. Some upgraded tie rods and you’ll never have an issue in normal use on and off road.
@@andrewslagle1974 Well not all HD use is plowing. I have a Silverado HD and never plan on putting a plow on it so IFS is great for me. To be fair, GM does say that you must have the snow plow prep package for plowing because it has heavier torsion bars for the front suspension.
I think a lot of the transmission stuff is from people driving them like a race truck in the hot tune or while towing. I could be wrong. That’s what bothered me so much about the CP4 issue in the ford. Nothing I could do driving wise to prevent it. It wasn’t from me beating on the truck.
@@Taylordrifts exactly man. A slipping trans an still be limped to an exit as well. And it’s a contained issue, albeit not easily fixed on the side of the road, but there’s parts available to prevent it along with driving it smart (like locking tc up, not hammering it when lugging up a hill, etc). The CP4 is more of all the sudden catastrophic failure at no fault of how you drive as you know.
LOVE the new Tow Rig. The dually Mega Cab is sweet for sure. The short bed is a hurtle but it will be really interesting to see how the trailer tows with the tweaks you are looking at. She's a beauty for sure.
Disappointed the fummins is not sticking around but it’s a nice truck short bed is gonna be a challenge I’d keep the fummins so when this one has issues you can still tow😂
Long time lurker here. I know of a few older 2000's ford 7.3 trucks with milage between 500 to 800k on them. Some had injectors replaced, one with a HPOP replaced at about 600k (800k truck). I would genuinely consider a 7.3 engine and trans swap if you're looking into something that's bullet proof because all of these trucks are towed almost every day and all of them have the original transmissions. None of these trucks are owned by the same drivers, and none of them know each other. Now the ironic part. 800k truck is retired by a 2021 6.7 and he's already not sure of it. He kept away from the 6.0 and it's failures but he did the right thing and has kept the truck just in case. Only reason he's retired the truck is because 700-800k is about the realm of rod fatigue and is planning what to do about it if he decides to reservice it. All he's ever done to this truck is make sure the oil is changed, and has the trans oil changed yearly.
Beautiful truck, to be fair, you don't technically have to get a new hitch and offset ball to get the clearance, you can stretch the frame and slap a long bed on there, its invasive and definitely the less practical of the options but it does make a cool truck even cooler.
Do what you need to do Taylor. The comments can say what they want, but they arent the ones hauling in it, going to events, maintaining it, the list goes on. Proud of you brother, cant wait to see what the future has in store.
I think a prevention kit on the 6.7 powerstroke was all you needed. They’re not actually all that hard to work on anyway. Hope this works out but fingers crossed you just throw in a 6 speed manual in the fummins one day. A simple project to get it fully bulletproof.
@@dashmaple2504 exactly that. I did think about getting another ford. Like a 2017 that’s out of warranty. Doing the fuel system upgrades. But it’s a much harder to work on engine package. And much more expensive truck to buy same for same.
@@Taylordrifts hmm I’ve heard from others that it wouldn’t void the warranty, but if they’re wrong then I understand. I still would’ve just ran it as is during the warranty and then modded it after, since truly the pump failure isn’t so bad that the trucks are undrivable. It’s still the best hotshot truck and tons have gone past 700k miles. My only thing with this decision is I feel like the ram is still going to potentially need some work to compare while the ford would’ve been a hands off experience for you. I think it was just an unlucky situation with the pump failing as early as it did and far away. At the least this truck is probably a lot cheaper anyway so that’s probably nice.
@@JosephSamsor yeah this truck is literally exactly half the cost of of the other truck. That was another factor. Ditching the truck payment and buying something outright instead and just planning on fixing it myself. The Ford are the best package performance and reliability wise. They’re just worse to work on. It’s a pick your poison kinda thing.
@@Taylordriftsyeah at half the cost I get your decision now. Not sure if it was mentioned in the video but from the comments it doesn’t seem like people are considering that aspect. Little bit of preventative maintenance and I can see this being nicer to have around without a payment to think about.
Love the truck. I have 3 of them. If your seriously worried about brake downs keep an extra turbo, and extra water pump, and and extra tipm. All easy to change. Likely hood of you haveing an issue with an anytime soon is rare as specially with the tipm. Only had to change a water pump in the road
To fit the 22.5's all you need is a leveling kit. Also you should swap to the CAT fuel and water separators. But the 22.5's on mine fit really well and the tires last me around 100k miles, well worth it!
Interesting you went with the short bed after borrowing the one to tow your trailer home and lacking turn radius. It’ll be cool to see how you can work around that.
I would get a banks tuner for it. I have 2 buddy’s that have the same truck as you and they both have tried different tuners on their trucks and they both ended up staying with the banks tuner. They said the banks performance tuner is all around better then other companies, as in the Engine performance fuel mileage and they both said the trans tune is better by far over the other companies
So happy for you man! The new truck is awesome and it fits all the checks. Bigger cab, good luxury, amazing Cummins reliability, no warranty so you don't have to stress about wrenching on it etc.
I believe there is a company in Florida that will stretch the frame. Short beds are the downfall of the mega cabs. I think Cletus tossed around this same idea when he decided to get rid of his mega cab that jack stand now has
Taylor you might wanna look into that telescoping fifthwheel so you dont crunch your cab corners... it's a pull rite hitch.... when you start to turn the hitch slides back and gives you room so you don't hit the cab corners
So glad you got a 4th gen mega, i have a 14 2500 srw mega larmine. I think you will enjoy it alot. It looks like you do have the 68rfe based of your dipstick location so yea your going to want a valve body at minimum id say. I dont tow heavy very often and still almost lost my trans, and did the BD 68protect vb rebuild and saved it. Check on your tuning like im sure you already are, but trans tuning will help alot and raise line pressure to keep it from burning clutches. If your tuner doesnt have trans tuning you can always get the BD trans tuner little plug and play controller to boost your line pressure
Love this thing and it makes a lot of sense as long as you can figure out the trans. Just gotta get some spicy wheels on her 👀
@@jacobjones784 yeah I made it this far in my life without it.
@@RileyMonthule it does need that without doubt. Lol

Those hitches are sick.
It’s not an aisin looking at the video. The trans dipstick is on the passenger side.
I'm a heavy fleet mechanic and you are spot on with your findings I got 7 dodges with the 6.7 /aisin trans combo. Danm near bulletproof
@@ruthlessronniethemechanic5639 👍
Did this when I worked at a Dodge dealer. It was a cool truck but gigantic.
Just watched a dude do this with a tundra. There’s no reason this shouldn’t be an option from factory.
Or just find a 4500 crew cab chassis for 10ft flatbeds and put the cab on that.
Lol he just spend prolly 60k on it and u want him to break it down and spend like $30k more😂😂 Forget that
@@nicholascole6939 I spent wayyyyy less than that.
Good luck 😂. You are screwed. Don’t sell the fummins, you will need it to rescue your trailer.
ATS now makes a kit to swap in an Allison 1000 and retain all factory functions. My buddy did it on his 2018 and it make one heck of a difference.
Who has time for that though? He already runs a company and manages multiple builds. Doesn't make sense to build another truck when he NEEDS it.
It's all 6.7s that have this. Better safe than sorry.
Yeah my uncles truck just got a
$30k new 6.7 bc of that bolt fell in.
Banks makes the best fix for this issue
Yes, the bolt that fastens the 12v cable to the isolator block the powers the heater element rots thru mid way and the bottom half gets sucked usually at the #6 cylinder. Banks engineering has a retrofit for this.
If you want to keep the grid heater sure Banks is nice, but he can just delete it entirely with the Fleece kit being in Florida weather.
Or better yet a superglide its all automatic
Wish you would of gotten a Aisin trans so you didn’t have to worry about the trans ever again :(.
The fuel mileage is comparable and yet gas is cheaper, no crazy diesel emissions, DEF, DPFs, Regenerations, I can go on and on lol.
can't believe more people don't go this route
@@danielwallace7239 gas is just lame and boring if you delete a brand new diesel it’s reliable and very fun
Most people opt for a diesel because it’s “cooler”
To think a gas job is ever going to out perform a diesel towing is hilarious. A diesel puts out twice the amount of torque at half the rpm. Gas motors belong in half tons not real trucks made for towing.
@smcox1991 Well I said it's comparable for what his goal is so I'm not sure what your going on about. A truck that tows 30k-40k is a truck that tows 30k-40k. I said everything else is better about a gas truck though which I will stand behind all day, and for you to debate is silly. Maybe if he starts hauling more than that he should get a big rig?
Would it be difficult to lengthen the frame and do a long bed conversion? I feel like that’s a Taylor type of project.
Need to get a Gen Y tongue for the gooseneck. Their torsion style gooseneck gets rid of a lot of road shock and also gives some offset back like you need. Also saves the trailer from a lot of shock keeping everything inside from getting knocked around.
I ended up order the shocker one just because it was in stock at e trailer. Two birds one stone. Get the offset while also adding shock resistance.

Get the CSP5 switch as well. - It’s a 5 position switch, but the 4th gen’s ECM can only store 4 tunes going the route I did. (Tow, economy, street and race.)
My shift points where raised, so no more quick shift/lower RPM cruising.

I do wish my megacab was a normal crew cab with a long bed. It's nice to have the extra room sometimes, but typically it's a pain with trailers. The blind spot out the passenger rear is horrible. Can be a big problem backing up a trailer. I have to get out and look too often.

Make sure you keep up on the maintenance like fuel filters ccv filter and trans services since you are towing a lot and it’ll be a good truck

i like the looks of the fummins better but an all OE tow rigs sounds like the better solution as on working on it. the engine its way cramp un in the fire wall and could potentially create issues with side of the road fix. i understand the move and well for long distance towing, the Ram is i believe to be the best option for side of the road and out of state issues
@@Taylordrifts Difference with a bumper pull is that the weight is lower. You're the guy w/ the truck obv, but I'd be concerned.

@@Taylordrifts you might be surprised how much worse the truck drives with the weight further back. Something tells me you won’t be happy until you end up in a hauler like the one Garrett has 😂
The problem is the maintenance on those is so expensive. Murder move (187 customs on RUclips) bought a Pete one. Needed a headgasket. Ended up costing him 30k to get it repaired at a shop on the trip. And a new one is like $4-500,000
Keep a check on the seal around the third brake light. They get brittle and will leek water into your cab that collects in the storage compartments.
Same on my Chevy when I took it off to tint the lights I used a lil silicone to keep water out
It's just as likely for the cab vents to leak, they often don't stay tight to the cab.
Junk
@@Mouthy_Trucker thats just horrid luck. I know 5+ppl with 2016 and newer trucks and they’re all fine.
@@Mouthy_Trucker I have a 2016 silverado that I've never had to touch at all. It drives perfect, tows perfect, and all the uppity gizmos in the interior all work perfectly. Just because your truck sucks doesn't mean they all do.
Anyone else notice the tailgate already smashed? 😂 congrats on the truck though.
I did , and small dent on the driver's quarter panel
Ditch the ford crap
Beautiful truck, only problem is you don't have the Aisin transmission so i would definitely look to upgrade that 68rfe
He will learn real quick that he should’ve kept his ford
Aisin would fix all his issues
Hey Taylor, this is just a thought, but there is a company named ATS. They make a tansmission conversion kit, for the Cummins. If you wanted to swap in a Allison 1000 trans. I think there is a couple other company's, with similar conversion kits.Truck looks great by the way!!!
One of my buddies also put one of the banks pedal commanders on his truck and he loves it
HEY!! I thought you was fixing the Fummings!

Stretch the frame and put on the 8' long bed on ....ultimate town rig
Plus room for tool box storage and bigger fuel tank.
Do yall understand how special it is to have a friend that literally bought a mega cab strictly for friends comfort and luggage? Come on!! Top tier homie!!!
Please keep showing love to the fummins.
maybe put some good 'ol Jumbo Willybobs under the F350 fummins and have it as the off road hauler?? but does it have awd/4*4?
Definitely would upgrade the turbo, those trucks are known for turbo actuator failure, knew this trucks was coming lol I saw it in the background on the sprinkler video .
Good for you man I may think the mega cab dually is the ugliest truck ever made proportionally wise because they don’t make that in a long bed, but your truck you seam stoked and that’s all that matters! Hope it brings you no issues and smooth sailing in your adventures!!
I agree, it don't like the overall look of it, but it's a sick truck either way!
There is a company, I think in CO, that will convert a mega cab into a long bed by extending the frame if its a must (I love my mega cab and would consider the stretch if I get a heavier goose/5th)
Wish you went with Aisin transmission
Really happy for you getting the truck you want. Was really hoping the Fummins would save the day and become your ultimate tow rig!
@@Taylordriftsturns towing into a road trip instead of work
Said before, but I’ll say it again. Do the 8’ bed conversion. Super easy and you’ll be so much happier with that in the end.
Oh noooooo! I was so amped and then I saw two pedals, and a column shift. Ahhhhhh. Still cool but man I thought you were going stick shift.
I couldn’t find one :( only found one in PA and it sold by the time I was ready.
🔥🔥 Badass 🤘🤘 Throw a CM Bed on it so You won't have to worry about the fenders when turning
@BrandonLeech Exactly. It's never gonna be as well engineering and put together as a stock unmodified truck.
Congrats on the new rig brother! Wishing you the best in your travels and can't wait for the new content!!!!!!
Best of luck and congrats!
the gm trucks shortcoming is The IFS no good for hd use real bad with a plow on the front .
Needs a 2018+ center screen etc so you get CarPlay and android auto!
Long bed swap!
Long bed swap!
Beautiful truck, to be fair, you don't technically have to get a new hitch and offset ball to get the clearance, you can stretch the frame and slap a long bed on there, its invasive and definitely the less practical of the options but it does make a cool truck even cooler.
I like the reliability modifications made to the 4th Gen 😉
Do what you need to do Taylor. The comments can say what they want, but they arent the ones hauling in it, going to events, maintaining it, the list goes on. Proud of you brother, cant wait to see what the future has in store.
I know a guy that has a Allison bolted to a 5.9 Cummins.
I think a prevention kit on the 6.7 powerstroke was all you needed. They’re not actually all that hard to work on anyway. Hope this works out but fingers crossed you just throw in a 6 speed manual in the fummins one day. A simple project to get it fully bulletproof.
For sure, and he’s made note of that, but the bulletproofing on the injector pump voids the warranty which was a major reason he got the truck.
Ugh....you got the 68rfe. You're about to be disappointed. Seeing under the hood, hopefully the previous owner at least did a valvebody upgrade.
why build the fummins if you get another truck ?
i really hope he measures the length and width of the bed on the new truck, i do think its wider then it is longer
Billet valve body with new synchros, good trans tuning, deep transmission pan and coolant bypass would be a great start. Nice truck!
Interesting you went with the short bed after borrowing the one to tow your trailer home and lacking turn radius. It’ll be cool to see how you can work around that.
Cant get a mega cab 4th gen with a long box unless it is custom made
@@jackrossman3565 well that explains it then 😅
I would get a banks tuner for it.
I think Cletus tossed around this same idea when he decided to get rid of his mega cab that jack stand now has
Look here bud, I'm TX Red and there's only room in Texas for the one of us. 😂
@@TXRed1836 lol we duel at high noon then!!!
Taylor you might wanna look into that telescoping fifthwheel so you dont crunch your cab corners... it's a pull rite hitch.... when you start to turn the hitch slides back and gives you room so you don't hit the cab corners
The Fummins build is what brought me to the channel. I love it! but the new rig is super nice.
Frame stretch for the 8ft bed 💪
