EVEN IF the scene were glorified, it should still not be removed. Freedom of artistic expression is important. People would be just as free to criticize said content. Remember-a gatekeep a day keeps the tourists away.
I agree with the freedom of expression, and after Visa/MasterCard went ballistic on some of Japanese sites because of them providing hentai material that is illegal in the west but perfectly legal in Japan (which does not make sense for them to go to after Japanese sites wtf), I think that censoring for western mainstream channels like Disney might save us from more mainstream backslash. I never thought I would advocate for gatekeeping, and it pains me that we don't have institutions and companies able to tell fiction from reality, but unless we want anime banned across the board, keeping it low is not a bad idea. Mentioning Frieza in Dragon Ball reminds me of something so stupid. Frieza being racist cause he calls Saiyans monkey is usually regarded as a joke. But some people think he's this reference to colonialism, a critique on white power, a nazi, etc. With Saiyans and Namekians being minority groups white people took advantage of. People be making huge overreaches trying to analyze every single thing in some of these characters. Bro Toriyama did not think that far ahead. He just made a bad guy to be a bad guy. It ain't any bit deeper than that. Same with Cell, and especially with Buu. The ability to seperate fiction from reality is something that should have formed fully at around the age of 7, but I guess some adults prove they gotta go back to 1st grade.
Pretty sure that example has a little bit less to do with not separating fiction and reality and more so to do with political extremist loons that can't stand escapism and want to force everything to be political.
Tbf when fiction is read by the public, interpretation no matter how weird or how far it is than the author's intended will always happen This is why there is an idea that fiction when published are no longer just the author's fiction However, i do agree that the author have the highest authority on what the actual message of the story is supposed to be but this doesn't mean than other interpretation is not valid. The interpretation is weird and/or just projection from the reader? Well their interpretation as long as it is based on what presented in the story the interpretation is still valid Is just not really what the author meant to be.
To be fair I think he and Cell definitely have "master race" vibes and represent the danger of elevating anything above "humanity"(human-like intelligence and compassion), as doing so tends to create unfeeling monsters no matter the intent. I wouldn't attach politics to it though, just philosophy.
I could’ve sworn Freiza was based off the Yakuza land sharks that would force people to sell their land around the 80s and then sell it back in bundles to politicians. That was my interpretation anyway

Many dont read berserk for the same reasons or have to be asked over and over and they often complain about the violent scenes that would be censored. They focus on other aspects of the story and later parts of game of thrones goes out of their way to remove the amount of said scenes or cover em up to cater to those offended. I agree with you on that Chibi. Censorship is ruining entertainment when you can’t show the worst things possible to explain why there is a need for good heroes. The Thanos relation was a great example you brought up. It’s also controversial because it’s an animated series vs. a live action series. You have shows like Game of Thrones and Euphoria (which ironically come from Warner Bros.) that show actors and actresses in the nude and “putting hot dogs in the buns” but that’s a no-can-do for anything animated. Series like those are great because of a lack of censorship, and anime should be treated the same way, especially since anime is geared more towards adults and older teens.

As a purist who believes that the content should always be what the original writer put out this should never have been touched. The original author considered the scene important and therefore it is important.
9:04 Their are obviously MULTIPLE examples of this, but the one I want to point to is Hikaru Kamiki from Oshi No Ko. Now for those of you who have already finished The manga, you now have the idea that Hikaru was done ABSOLUTELY dirty as a villain. We do get some indications that he killed someone, but he thing is is that never ACTUALLY see him Hack someone to death, Shoot them in the head, or hell even push them off a cliff.
My personal philosophy regarding censorship is that I'm fine with there being censored versions of certain content for those that are uncomfortable with it. That is, only so long as the original UNCUT version is also readily available as a viable option for those that want it. That way the option is fully in the hands of the viewer.
this is exactly why i hate it when writers try to make bad guys out to be good guys or relatable, why cant something bad, just be bad and be used as a plot device? same with "uncomfortable scenes" 1) with anime, its fiction, real people arent going through it or acting it out other than voicing, 2) stated before, it could be used, and have had this discussion before, and the response was "it doesnt need to be shown at all" but if a characters driving force is to end someone or some thing, based on the terrible acts they committed, shouldnt the viewer be shown so they can be repulsed by the actions and cheer on the person who will eventually take them down? people seem to only focus on the act rather than the plot relevance of it being shown, creators show everything they believe the audience need to see to understand their story, people arent forced to watch shows, if they dont like something in a show, they are free to find another show or movie
Agreed. This is why my stance on censorship. If you don’t like something, if something makes you uncomfortable, don’t engage with it. No one is forcing you to consume media you find unpleasant. That doesn’t mean go harass and virtue signal to people who do enjoy that type of media. I don’t like most horror films because I feel uncomfortable seeing people (especially women) begging for their lives and screaming as they are brutally murdered, but I just stay away from those types of horror films. Not everything can be made for everyone. That’s why genres exist. That’s why ratings exist.
I’m going to date myself here, I watched it first on vhs as a teen. The scene is not played to show how horrible and bad the character is. Has society become so weak that we can’t show how bad evil people are in fictional stories?
It’s funny how you believe that Abuse is the be all end all for depicting an evil character. Society hasn’t gotten weak, people have dove into degeneracy.
Ok so, this lesbian scene was cut, because people felt "uncomfortable", but praise the scene in arcane where "Vi and Caitlynn fucking in a prison cell" as revolutionary and a masterpiece of media. Wtf? That shit was cringe af.
Honestly, good or bad, if it's what the creator(s) wanted then it should stay. If viewers aren't mature enough to handle it then they can watch something else. They shouldn't try to censor things just because they don't like it. If things like that keep happening then eventually something they like will be censored by the standards they helped create.
I dont care how accessible anime is now, I will still pirate because of shit like this. I support the studios by buying directly from Japan which gives them far more money than watching a licensed censored anime on a legal site ever will.
It really does feel the only proper way to watch anime is to pirate it. Anyone who is pro-censorship, is only that because their favorite things are not censored. Chronolog anyone saying this is a good thing, and the next time they mention what they loved being censored tell them it's a good thing it was.
Even if a scene is widely considered a failure, failed art can be used to teach what pitfalls exist. Memory holing those failures deprive us of the chance to learn from them. I'd like to know what precisely the argument is for how and why this scene was deemed to "not contribute" to the story. Which is a discussion you cannot HAVE if you remove the ability to even engage with the cut scene.
To clarify a couple things: Macross is an anime original franchise that's been running since the 80s. Due to rights disputes internationally, many of the Macross sequels, including Macross 7 and Dynamite 7 never got officially released in the West. A few years ago the Japanese producers of Macross got the rights issue resolved and eventually partnered with Disney to get the Macross sequels on to Disney+/Hulu. Macross 7 itself is a bit of a divisive entry in the franchise, you either love it or hate it. As a result, there are a lot of self-proclaimed Macross fans who have never seen Dynamite 7 because they never got through Macross 7 itself. Dynamite 7 is a direct to the events of Macross 7. The sexual assault scene was not the only scene removed from the OVA, essentially the entire B plot of the OVA involving Mylene meeting this music producer is removed. So, several scenes which set up the controversial one were removed as well as the scene showing how the situation is resolved.
Did you forget the part of Goblin Slayer in which Crunchyroll gave it a TV-PG rating, and so people went into it thinking it will be only fun and happy times? I wouldn't think it was not so much the scenes in question that caused issue as much people being blindsided while thinking it was an anime children could watch with "parental guidance".
I will add this, I remember watching the first episode of Goblin slayer like day of release on Crunchyroll and was wildly surprised by the degree of content shown because there was no either content warning or TV rating displayed. I believe they added one a couple of days later, but I was definitely surprised when I went in blind.
My only critique of your video here, a sympathetic “crybaby” villain isn’t about having a need to make villains who don’t do anything to bad as to offend people’s sensibilities! It’s about in theory making more nuanced villains, where oh “I understand how they got to where they are” and even if they’re acting heinous and doing the wrong thing, you can at least see what drove them to that point step by step! Granted yeah, sometimes you just need a villain who’s just a raw POS, and their actions are so horrible, it cheapens them to try and excuse say, being an outright despot, or committing slaughter of an entire people or group! With regards to censorship this is solely a concern, people have not with the writing, but wholly with the content offending or disgusting them! Thus demanding the art be toned down, even if others want art to push the boundaries, and aren’t effected in the same way! Like my view is if a piece of art is too much for you, it’s entirely on you to go somewhere else! Not on the artist to make a toned down version of their work to cater to your sensibilities!
I did watch Dynamite 7 It was a good ova series. You know when they release a OVA series which is release direct to VHS, Laser disk and DVD not on TV, it tends to have over the top violence or controversial topics that they don't feel comfortable with. Problem is the sexual assault issue isn't as bad as they make it out to be in that anime but I guess someone can't handle fiction very well in that anime.
I’m somewhat reminded of a similar kind of scene in the first Evil Dead. Which involved a possessed tree doing the S-A. When interviewed Sam Ramey said he regretted putting that scene in the movie, but said he would not want it to be cut.
I completely agree with your point about villains, Chibi. Dio did a lot of questionable things. The fact that he used Jonathan’s body to have children-likely without the mothers' consent-is insane. While it's not explicitly confirmed, based on how he treated Jonathan’s crush when she wiped her lips in disgust after he forced a kiss, I wouldn’t put it past him. That’s probably how Giorno was born, to be honest. Dio grew up with an abusive father, which likely fueled his hatred for the world, but at the end of the day, he was just evil for the sake of being evil. Some people in real life commit terrible acts simply because they can, and villains in fiction shouldn’t be censored just to make people comfortable. If the people who censored this OVA were disturbed by that scene, they probably wouldn’t be able to get through a Batman comic with all the horrific things the Joker does.
Why does Disney even have anime to begin with? It's not the place I would go to stream that genre. When I know it would be censored the hell out of. I wanted to watch Bleach but was like nah, not on Disney+.
We forget sometimes that a villian believes in what he is doing. He may know that it is not socially acceptable but he believes he has the right to do what he has done because he has the power to do it.
Did you actually read the ANN article, Chibi? Because if you had you'd have seen in the first paragrah that the scene is also cut on streaming services in Japan, meaning Disney has nothing to do wtih the censorship. This was a decision made on the Japanese side and only affects steaming platforms. The OVA is still available in its uncut form in Japan on both physical media and from digital storefronts and PPV services. Macross also has a history or editing violent and sexual content as previous Blu-ray releases in Japan were edited for content. If you'd actually done your due diligence instead of using obvious click bait for views you might have known that.
You honestly think and accept that if not for some influences any of this would happen. USA has been censoring Anime since they where aware. 😂😂😂. My problem isn't censorship my problem is just like how Saudi have it's censorship laws l understand that. If you want to sell in a country you must obey or leave.😊
He should have watched Dynamite or other series in the Macross universe before making this video. People also forget that scene is against the Disney brand (and yes, I am not a fan of Disney).
The same people who cry about Tiktok getting banned will cheer for this censorship, absolute hypocrites. In any case, if you are paying for anime through a streaming service you are part of the problem period. Dust off that pirate hat already!
As a (bad) writer, if the scene has no value in the story, nothing happens in the future because of it or changes a character, then I think it's pretty pointless, and I personally think it could be good that it was removed. The only purpose I can see it filling that way is filler and fanservice, but probably not the enjoyable kind for most. Filler can have a purpose too, yes, but if it is pure filler (no bearing on the story or maybe no lore hints either), then it's pretty purposeless, and I can easily see it being better if it is replaced with something else. I don't like censorship, but I'm speaking about the story here. And story wise, I can quite easily see it being better to have something else or have that scene removed, if it really is purposeless. (Note, I only watched the video up until 7:02 so far)
I look forward to the day when anime, manga/light novels, & gaming are no longer mainstream again (even if I'm not alive to witness it, at least 1 of my descendants will enjoy it).
@providencebreaker1558 I don't think so either, but as long as there are ignorant (or uneducated) people who see it as "for kids", a small part of me will still have hope that it'll go back to being niche (even just for a bit or slowly).
The censorship alters the orginals creators vision of the story as a whole. The truth is that it happens in the real world and we hide behind censor ship and pretend sexuality never happens in all of its many forms.
You can imagine how bad censorship ruins the interest of an audience to a show. I remember 10 years ago, a local tv station in our country had bad censorship in anime and dubbed films. They zoom in scenes so much to remove gore or slight fan service like little cleavage of women you almost can't see anything besides low resolution face, and filter blood with grayscale.
I think something that is also a part of this is that people more and more seem to have a hard time abstracting and remembering fictional characters are FICTIONAL. More and more you see people trying to harm people IRL due to stuff that is done to or associated with characters in a 100% fictional setting. It's a really disturbing trend.
Classically, one of the more important elements in growing up is discovering that you like and admire the work of people who have ideals and perspectives that you don't agree with. For all that it isn't usually what censors are after, the eventual effect of censorship retards the development of critical faculties and works to present a view of history in which the dead are coerced into voicing support of the people with the power to censor.
Disney is in serious financial trouble, and this little stunt isn't going to help their situation. Jusy keep withholding money from them and enjoy the show.
Considering Disney is afraid to write actual villains in their own content, the censorship of this OVA makes too much sense. Can’t have a deplorable evil man take advantage of a young idol, that’s too evil and should not be shown.
Yeah I remember the scene. If it wasn't for the principle of censorship I'd say nothing of value was lost. It doesn't fit in with the rest of the series as is, to the point of me wondering who the hell greenlighted putting it in.
Censorship should be criminalized. Doesn't matter the medium or context. If one alters the original vision of a creator without their consent, then this should be criminalized hard. With financial penalties in the millions.
Well Yo-Ho-Ho I think a lot of this "in relatively recent times) has to do with pro-brand "influencers" always side with companies and the "right" opinion to be safe and receive gifts or sponsorships, ending up trickling these types of pro-censorship/anti-art views onto viewers who are unable to think for themselves.
It's been said that, in their OWN mind, a villain does not consider himself/herself a villain. A strongly written villain believes their actions are right or justified. Now, that doesn't mean the audience has to like them, or even should like them. But giving them an internal motivation makes them more depth, and it makes your protagonist have to fight against so much more. But this scene sounds like it's meant to establish the evil nature of the character, and adds to the dramatic tension of how the potential victims will get out of the situation. This is called Storywriting, and Character Development. Something that American media has lost the capability of.

Pirate anime but buy official marchandising, a lot of monney go to the studio directly that way
FCC wont censor GoT, The Boys, Walking Dead because every scene is important. But the bias against anime points out the hypocricy they're displaying.

Not agreeing or disagreeing just stating how people felt. I don’t mind censoring if they want as long as original available for those who mind and said material isn’t in bad faith or hurting people. Like go ahead censor a story just saying hey do violent acts to this group of people cause it’s good and then there’s no story just proproganda and inciting violence. Even if it wasnt censored, Id never give Disney my money.
EVEN IF the scene were glorified, it should still not be removed. Freedom of artistic expression is important. People would be just as free to criticize said content. Remember-a gatekeep a day keeps the tourists away.
No such thing as glorified x.
Because x isn't in fiction, and it's unacceptable to defile fiction by attaching it to reality.
And of course, the ones that want to find uncensored version always can.
You seem to forget that the new USA administration is going to be full of the very people who wish to censor and ban most of video games, anime & manga.
This comment is tone deaf, that's like trying to say a show that glorified sa is good to not edit out because artistic freedom. Boi no it's not, there's a difference between cutting out something that makes no sense and cutting out glorified aspects of horrible stuff and your excuse is free speech.

Tbf when fiction is read by the public, interpretation no matter how weird or how far it is than the author's intended will always happen
This is why there is an idea that fiction when published are no longer just the author's fiction
However, i do agree that the author have the highest authority on what the actual message of the story is supposed to be but this doesn't mean than other interpretation is not valid.
The interpretation is weird and/or just projection from the reader? Well their interpretation as long as it is based on what presented in the story the interpretation is still valid
Is just not really what the author meant to be.
@@mysetlist2118 Not sure about the Yakuza bit but Toriyama definitely modeled Frieza after Land Sharks because he grew up around the time they were prevalent and saw them as the worst people.

@@echidnanation8239 People obviously think GOT is adult and more serious and hold it as prestige and take those scenes as plot driven, and think the anime isnt strong enough in plot to carry those scenes. They think violence in fighting is more for kids as long as no blood or excessive anger. Looney toons anyone. If you remove all violence and all action to help people stay happy then you just have easy going slice of life. Fair but not everyone likes that. still, I don't get Original poster's claim though. Game of thrones was constantly criticized during it's release and book tubers refuse to read it (woman and men) due to it offending them or their sensitivity to the subject. Many dont read berserk for the same reasons or have to be asked over and over and they often complain about the violent scenes that would be censored. They focus on other aspects of the story and later parts of game of thrones goes out of their way to remove the amount of said scenes or cover em up to cater to those offended. People are more sensitive to cartoons or anime doing it cause they still see it as made for kids, even anime fans. They want easy to follow, fun happy stuff. They get mad when edgy or dark stuff happens (alot not all). Look at the response to s2 of jjk and how alot dropped cause they thought it was a happy fairytail like series. People are just sensitive, and that's fine they can drop and not censor. Leave it to people who like it. And if the author wants they can censor.
Except Game of Thrones is an adult 18+ show, for mature audiences. This is an anime, for children/teens… don’t tell me you’re about to act like an adult tv show, showing adult themes makes even a slight difference? The anime is almost 20 years old, maybe acceptable then, not anymore.
Shift the argument from censorship to why on earth is Disney+ streaming the anime in the first place?

We do get some indications that he killed someone, but he thing is is that never ACTUALLY see him Hack someone to death, Shoot them in the head, or hell even push them off a cliff.
Was he in the anime already?
@ yes
My personal philosophy regarding censorship is that I'm fine with there being censored versions of certain content for those that are uncomfortable with it. That is, only so long as the original UNCUT version is also readily available as a viable option for those that want it. That way the option is fully in the hands of the viewer.
And I hate cancel culture
You know I'm something of a PIRATE myself.
This is why people have personal archives for anime and other media. Nobody’s paying for services or products ruined or tampered with by censorship.
this is exactly why i hate it when writers try to make bad guys out to be good guys or relatable, why cant something bad, just be bad and be used as a plot device? same with "uncomfortable scenes" 1) with anime, its fiction, real people arent going through it or acting it out other than voicing, 2) stated before, it could be used, and have had this discussion before, and the response was "it doesnt need to be shown at all" but if a characters driving force is to end someone or some thing, based on the terrible acts they committed, shouldnt the viewer be shown so they can be repulsed by the actions and cheer on the person who will eventually take them down? people seem to only focus on the act rather than the plot relevance of it being shown, creators show everything they believe the audience need to see to understand their story, people arent forced to watch shows, if they dont like something in a show, they are free to find another show or movie

The funny thing of Thanos in the comics, he killed everyone just so he may get close to Death, brother was down bad
Honestly, good or bad, if it's what the creator(s) wanted then it should stay. If viewers aren't mature enough to handle it then they can watch something else. They shouldn't try to censor things just because they don't like it. If things like that keep happening then eventually something they like will be censored by the standards they helped create.
What's crazy is that ALL of this is allowed in movies, and tv shows that kids can easily access it.
I dont care how accessible anime is now, I will still pirate because of shit like this. I support the studios by buying directly from Japan which gives them far more money than watching a licensed censored anime on a legal site ever will.
Not being able to talk about censorship out of fear of censorship is inceptually hilarious 😂
It really does feel the only proper way to watch anime is to pirate it.

I’m Just Waiting For Disney To Go Bankrupt.
When you don’t let villains be villains in art, it makes people fail to see villains IRL. (Looking at you, pro-palis)
As a fan of the franchise, this is NOT how I wanted the Macross series to make the headlines.
Those people have no protoculture...
No they do not... We must protrct the DeCulture!
My conspiracy theory is villains are no longer villains because the corporate world won't allow themselves to be written about.
It sounds like a good anime I'm going to go watch the uncensored version
idk what happened to just "if you dont like it, dont watch it" and content warning labels, its so pointless
Tourists jumping into a piranha tank expecting not to get bit, then demanding their teeth be removed.
Going into the ocean and splashing. A shark ends up biting them and they demand they be removed.
To the people who are praising this being censored, don't start complaining when something you like gets censored.
Poses the question of why would Disney even let the show air on their service?
I hate censorship too
For people to praise it goes to show the west doesn't deserve anime
The same people who cry about Tiktok getting banned will cheer for this censorship, absolute hypocrites.
In any case, if you are paying for anime through a streaming service you are part of the problem period. Dust off that pirate hat already!
When you try to create relatable villains, creating sympathy for the devil, you blind people to the fact that true evil does exist.

In other hand censorship is slippery slop. Now they censored some unknown niche anime next this might happen to your favourite shows.
Disney getting back into anime was a horrible idea

Jusy keep withholding money from them and enjoy the show.
we don't get OVAS's anymore because we just get ONA instead. directly sold or streamed digitally, and bluray later if they do really well.
Censorship like lying on a document.
Well Yo-Ho-Ho
I think a lot of this "in relatively recent times) has to do with pro-brand "influencers" always side with companies and the "right" opinion to be safe and receive gifts or sponsorships, ending up trickling these types of pro-censorship/anti-art views onto viewers who are unable to think for themselves.
The difference in between hero and villain should be one really bad day. Been saying this a lot lately.
