But if it wasn't for pirate sites, i wouldn't even have come into contact with most anime and mangas and now i'm buying games, light novels, mangas, merchandise and anime itself left and right, of works i only came in contact with through pirate sites
I always wondered why pirate sites were allowed to just freely exist to this degree. Now it makes a lot more sense. I thought official companies were using pirate sites as a proxy information gathering point for possible localization, but I’d have never thought they would be this directly connected.
Any pirate thinking they're fighting corpos by pirating content and that corpos don't know about pirate sites are very much deluded, I would think the fact that multiple pirate sites where almost instantly taken down after the Netflix leak would have shown that but apparently not. Corps, especially big anime producers and distributers like Sony, via Aniplex, and Kadokawa, don't care about pirate sites because it would be too much of a hassle to actually try to take them down and they only actually bother doing so when the site gets too big or does something dumb like upload unaired episodes of anime like with the Netflix leak.
As Gabe Newell once said, piracy is a service issue. Either there's no official way to purchase the product or it's so convoluted and/or inconvenient that it isn't worth doing. Back before things like Netflix and Hulu, the only way to watch anime with subtitles was to pirate it. Otherwise, you had to hope it got localized and aired on a tv station you could watch or buy/rent the VHSs/DVDs once it finished airing. There was an anime I couldn't finish watching when it first aired because it was on HBO and we dropped that channel from our satellite tv plan, and our local video rental store's only anime were movies, so I was only able to finish watching it by going to a pirate site like Crunchyroll or RUclips (aging myself here). No company wants their product stolen, but most digital sellers realize that there will be a good chunk of people pirating their content and that there's a good amount of people out there that will 'try' before they buy. Those companies are hoping to turn those people into customers, but if those people never get to 'try', they won't ever buy. It's why sites like Crunchyroll let you watch the first couple episodes of some shows without a paid subscription. But for doujinshi, there's no option of 'trying' aside from piracy.
Honestly makes a lot of sense, also it offers good free advertisement for series/authors. Let's say someone becomes a fan of a series because they read a manga on something like mangadex, if they are really into their stuff it's likely they will eventually buy official merch of the series and maybe eventually buy the physical copies for collection sake when officially localized (tho i also know some people would buy the unlocalized manga). So it does definitely help with bringing in customers for free, on top of doing a good work in doing free market research on what people like or not
It's the same way law enforcement work with criminals. Intel is more valuable. There's a reason why the quote "the pen is mightier than the sword exists"
Requesting to transfer the ownership to them was insane. Imagine asking Google to transfer the ownership of the entire RUclips platform to you because you found a video on it that allegedly infringes your copyright.
Job well done on this site for fighting back! Too many copyright trolls. Encountered this on RUclips also back in the days when they started claiming music and sound effects in videos that they themselves had no claim to, but because the system was so broken you basically had no recourse.
I remember fresh after the Google buyout seeing Viacom copyright claiming anything that ever aired on tv, including public domain and content on the official channels of the people who made them like Al Yankovic.
