As for Picard, his best moment is easily the end of Darmok, where in the face of Riker getting the ship nearly destroyed (yet again), Picard waltzes onto the bridge, takes charge and in the space of a few moments gets the Tamarians to stand down.
Yeah, Riker and his spaceballs. What does the other commander say? Something like, "Dathon and Picard at El-adril." A new metaphor in their language and a basis for communication. That's an example of why STTNG is the best, most thoughtful show ever to grace a television screen. Then there's Chuck.

That may have been true had it been at all his plot and mechanation. In reality, Garak played Captain Sisko like a fiddle the entire time to bring about a result that he wanted. Had they followed the plan precisely like Sisko wanted, the Romulans would likely have been convinced to join the Dominion. Garak supplied not only the data rod, but the programmer, and the cover for all the inconsistencies that he knew would inevitably show up due to his previous experience with them.
That wasn't really Sisko's decision though, he was running an entirely different op with the same basic goal, he was just being manipulated into following Garak's plan, as a matter of fact the fake plan was also Garak's plan.
Picard convincing the Klingon HC to give him a cloaked ship with only his “gratitude” in exchange was brilliant, especially when he told them if he didn’t get the ship, he would get from Garwon’s enemies - and then they would have his “gratitude”.
I was about to point this out too. The USS Yamato is repeatedly mentioned and shown up until its demise thanks to one Iconian program upload. Yamamoto however was indeed the japanese Admiral in command for the Pearl Habor attack, among many other commands he had - including, as gar as I know, a short time on both Yamato and Musashi.
I was going to mention that as well. Yamamoto was the famous Japanese Admiral in World War II who had studied in the U.S. some years prior to the war, while the Yamato was there biggest battleship (which Yamamoto used as his flagship during the Battle of Midway). The names are similar so people easily get mixed up. To me, maybe it's like the word "banana," where you might accidentally put in too many "na's" (or "ma's/mo's") in this case.
There are much better examples in Star Trek lore: May This Be Your Last Battlefield - Kirk activates the Enterprise self destruct sequence to stop rival aliens from hijacking his ship. The Corbomite Maneuver - Kirk bluffs an alien into thinking that attacking the Enterprise would ultimately destroy him. Counterpoint - Janeway outsmarts the Inspector and manages to free a group of telepaths. Favor the Bold - Sisko convinces the Prophets to eradicate the en bound Dominion ships and retakes DS9. Wrath of Khan - Kirk and Spock use an encoded transmission to fool Khan into thinking the Enterprise would be disabled for days. Undiscovered Country - Kirk tricks Lt. Valeris into thinking the assassins were alive to expose herself and reveal her co-conspirators. Year of Hell - Janeway realizes at the last minute that destroying the Krenum weapon ship would restore history. The Defector - Thinking ahead, Picard has a squadron of cloaked Klingon Bird of Preys escort the Enterprise D into the Neutral Zone to investigate Romulan incursions. Picard signals them to de-cloak after they're ambush by the Romulans. The Best of Both Worlds - Captain Riker uses an unorthodox strategy to out maneuver the Borg and kidnap Locutus. Relics - (Just for fun) Captain Scott kept himself alive in a transporter buffer for over 80 years after his ship crashed into the Dyson Sphere.
ST:VI : Sulu "doesn't know" the status of Enterprise, or disposition of her personnel. Enterprise is then free to foil assassination plot, and maintain balance of power across two whole quadrants
Me and another Trek fan did this episode as a Duo interpretation for competitive speech at the college level. Never advanced to a final round, but we had fun. (I was the Cardassian.)
I think Janeway's decision to combine the crew was the only viable one -- and despite the Maquis disdain for Starfleet, _everybody_ wanted to get home. I don't think it would have gone well if the Maquis tried taking over the ship, either -- if Janeway had just locked them all in the brig, there wouldn't have been much a crew to run the ship. If the Maquis tried to mutiny and failed, then both sides would have probably taken casualties, the Starfleet crew would have been even worse off, and the Maquis would be stuck in the brig anyway. If the Maquis _did_ successfully take over the ship, they would still be low on hands, especially if they killed the remaining Starfleet crew or abandoned them on a planet. The Maquis might have traded tech and such to improve their odds of getting home, and used tactics that Janeway would never allowed, but I don't think they would have done as well as the combined crew did.

What? No love for Kirk's destruction of the war computer that calculates and orders the deaths of civilians on two worlds warring for 500 years? I'd say crashing what was essentially a high stakes game of StarCraft in order to bring the threat of real war between two civilizations unprepared or willing to go to such lengths was a brilliant gamble.
Tbh, like Spock, I was more impressed with Kirk's DAZZLING display of logic against Nomad. Or his focused anger on the deadly gas, warp speed cloud in Obsession.

The obvious answer to the Kirk-Mudd conundrum was that Kirk was lying with his initial statement that Mudd only lies. He only mostly lies. :p As far as Kirk's response in Obsession, it was more Ahab than Walter Raleigh. He was an emotional wreck for most of it and responded with a mixture of fear, anger, self loathing, and vengeance. Not one of his best moments, but definitely one of his most human. Frankly, I would put up both of his instances of the "corbomite maneuver." The first time was a brilliant gambit versus the Fesivius, and the second was a quick witted stroke of intelligence manipulation. Frankly, a list of brilliant Kirk moves could be made with plenty of room for debate.

He even said as much in the episode. Specifically that they were approaching the problem like it was chess up to that point, but that inspiration from poker. More specifically the more skill based aspect of poker. While it is still an element of chance, the bluff is more about reading an adversary and playing their fears and doubts against them. In the case of the Fesivius, Kirk bet on Balok having the same sense of self preservation as most lifeforms. In that respect, it is equal measures skill and gamble.

Federation and Klingons might have had an uneasy relationship in Garrett's time, but they also had a treaty. It wasn't out of the blue to take a side, it was responding to their ally.
Q specifically provokes Picard because it’s a test, His entire arc is about humanity evolving past their baser violent tendencies. He literally held Humanity on trial with Picard as our representative for the entire TNG series. He got his cheap laugh out of Sisko and then went on his merry way because Sisko had nothing more to offer.
Exactly, Sisco was to emotional and simple minded. He was the first captain to command a battle ship for starfleet. The dominion war just proved humanity is still flawed and we have a long ways to go still.
i think on this list is Janeway's decision to make a temporary treaty with the Borg. The result was Seven of Nine's release and an addition to the crew. it also provided Janeway the start of the path as the "knower of all" about the Borg (IMHO, at least). In the finale, the future Janeway is highly regarded as the expert on the Borg Collective.
One minor teensy addition I would have made to the entry for Captain Garrett was that ultimately through her sacrifice she was able to show The Klingon Empire that, perhaps for the first time, that The Federation was made up of Warriors who understood the need for sacrifice. I say this for a couple of reasons: Throughout the documented timeline of events in the conflict between the Klingons and The Federation whether it was Kirk, or an alternate-timeline Picard, or a Mirror Universe Rebellion at Terok-Nor against their oppressors or a host of other situations there were ample opportunities in which Klingons got to face Terrans as opponents on the field of battle. They even had a number of instances in which various opponents even earned a begrudging respect of the Klingons as formidable warriors. However, there was always this sort of 'reticence' to fully commit to the concept of blatant, unmitigated adherence to self-sacrifice on the field of battle. That is NOT to say that Klingons never saw Terrans die in combat or to show the courage to face death with Honor, that certainly occurred abundantly. I am saying that with Captain Garrett I believe it was the first time they really got to see the mettle of StarFleet in what really, if you think about it, was a true Kobayashi Maru scenario. Why do I mention the Kobayashi Maru (heh, and considering you brought up Kirk's own issues with it)? I mention this because, unlike the Federation, to the Klingons the Kobayashi Maru Scenario is NOT a "Lose/Lose". It's a "Win/Win" and THAT is what I feel was lacking in the fundamental understanding between the Federation and The Klingon Empire. To the Klingons, the concept of a "wasted death" in glorious combat was never a question, so therefore there is no idea of a "Lose" merely in the face of inevitable defeat, in fact its one of their highest moments of Honor to go into battle knowing you will lose but for the sake of your own Honor and your Warrior's Spirit. In viewing, the Federation they would likely have seen ample evidence of a captain or crew no doubt be willing to fight to the death but ultimately with the intent to win some goal even during a rout. While this is certainly honorable to the Klingon Code that is not the Core of their being. I believe in ample situations and lines of evidence the Klingons demonstrated an even higher respect for those demonstrations of honor in which Death was certain, no measurable victory was possible and defeat was inevitable and yet they would go to Sto-vo-kor with a song in their hearts because they chose to die as they lived, as warriors. Captain Garrett KNEW (even before the whole being sucked into an alternate timeline thing gave her even greater insight) that putting herself between the defenseless Klingons and the barbaric Romulans was going to get her killed but she simply couldnt watch it and write a damn report to send back to Starfleet. She saw that her death and the death of her crew was inevitable and the chance that they could save the colony was impossible(she wasnt even thinking about the longterm consequences, thats where the whole alternate timeline in which she got to see The Bigger Picture comes in). She HAD to fight them regardless and she knew going into it they would die but that was the pivotal moment, the acceptance of Death on the terms of a warrior with no hope of any victory other than holding true to one's Honor. THAT is what struck to the Heart of the Klingon Empire, that one of their enemies could be so like themselves when up till then they may have been seen as enemies, worthy of respect surely, but that they still remained "alien" to them. Through her sacrifice to defend an enemy, in a hopeless battle with only the promise of Death to be had she went into the fires of battle and showed that we Terrans were capable of understanding what it meant to be Klingons.
"Janeway making an alliance with the Borg" and "Janeway deciding to be assimilated by the Borg" should have been on this list. Those were some crazy but effective solutions. And if Picard setting the auto-destruct made the list, Janeway destroyed or started to destroy Voyager on soooo many occasions. But Sisko punching Q was brilliant apparently.

Do they have to be current captains? Because Admiral Pressman from "The Pegasus" would be on that list. And if we are including non-Federation captains there are plenty more options to choose from.
I so want to see him getting back into Starfleet after the end of VOY. He had experience beforehand and showed that he can be a reliable officer. Sure, all the marquis would have to stand trial after the return, but all they did during those years should be weighted in favor of them. So him joining back into Starfleet proper, mabye after some hearings and tests isn't too far off.

Long story short, Commanded by Chakotay, tactical observer 7 of 9, a Romulan chief engineer "with a Romulan cloaking device", Navigation/con Ltjg Nog, a klingon 1st officer, an Enduran security chief and a holographic DR Bashire who`s bedside manor has been mocked up so much while he`s making you comfortable, you might bleed to death. For occasional comedic relief. Almost forgot to mention the USS Constitution is very well equipped in Laded Armor & midi-phasic shielding "from STNG" to hide in a stars corona. Klingon disrupters, of course starfleet issue photon torpedo`s.

Sisko's gripe with Eddington was personal. Ben says so himself "he's just a man... and he BEAT ME!" Dude be pissed-off. Willingness to bend the rules kept getting more significant for Sisko, ultimately culminating in his decision to bring a neutral nation into a costly war using deceit, trickery, theft and murder. He can live with it though. Man, I love DS9 and Sisko is definitely GOAT.

In the chess frame of mind, the game is over--checkmate--as Spock says. But in Kirk's brilliant reframe to poker, then BLUFF becomes more powerful than warp engines and phasers, so long as Kirk can skillfully sell the bluff (Kirk makes up the explosive Corbomite device on the fly) and keep his nerve throughout. Spock's brilliant logic was itself was checkmated. So it is Kirk alone who is left to come up with the genius solution to save his ship with seconds to go before destruction. And Kirk delivers with typical flair and cunning. Coming up with the Corbomite bluff making it up brilliantly as he went along under the most intense pressure possible.
Janeway didn't hand over chief engineering to the Maquis. The chief engineer was a federation officer until being killed later on, and Maquis Torres, who was already integrated into the crew was selected afterwards.
Not to mention that Torres did attend Starfleet Academy but dropped out before graduation. It's not like she had no clue about how Starfleet runs a ship.
@@alanbear6505 Plus, the number of Maquis that where 'integrated' was a very small number, not nearly enough to mutiny or even run Voyager themselves. They needed the Starfleet officers, and Janeway knew it. Likewise, she added some considerable talent to her ship in doing so. One or two small problems aside.
Janeway should of had so many more. Janeway siding with the borg? Janeway blows up the krenim ship, with everyone else's shields down to hopefully alter time so year of hell didn't happen and all those species' restored. This has to be on the list, was such a gamble to take.
How was janeway siding with the borg, the greatest threat of the federation, against the one species that are capable of defeating them and who could have been allies (but even if not it wouldn't be as bad as they could actually defeat them), genius? It was an idiotic idea, and that's not even taking into account that she know the truce would be broken the moment they weren't needed. The only genius thing about it was that they got seven to join the crew.
She also has the WORST decision ever made by a Star Fleet Captain. SHE COULD HAVE USED TIME DELAY TORPEDOES TO BLOW UP THE ARRAY! Everyone could have been home, Harry Kim could have been promoted at some point, and Nick Locarno, sorry, Tom Paris could have returned to his prison sentence in paradise.
Q wasn't omnipresent. That would me he was everywhere at once or at least aware of everywhere at once which he obviously wasn't since he didn't know what was going on outside of the areas he was actively in or observing.
Sisko wasn't a "Captain" when he took on Q and punched him. Also notable, "Yamamoto"?? "Neandara III"? I think the script writers are spending too much time in their "pants".

So sisko commiting war crimes against freedom fighters (call them terrorists if you want but as much as the show tried to put them in a bad light, they had a point considering that the federation abandoned them and their worlds to facists and then ignored their pleas for help and leaving them with the two options of either sumitting to said facists or fighting back) was a genius thing? If you are going to pick a sisko commits a war crime, why not put when he manipulated the romulans into the war with the dominion.
Actually, Kirk didn't 'cheat' the test. To cheat you would need to know the question that would be on the test or be able to acquire the answer during test. Since there was no correct solution to the kobayashi maru simulation, there would be no way to cheat to achieve the solution. By reprogramming the simulation he created his own version of the simulation, which, being the writer of the new simulation, he already knew the solution. It's not cheating when you write your own simulation, it's called creative thinking... LOL
Best solution I ever saw was a character using an obscure law about trial by combat. While they are locked into that ritual the civilian ship and Starfleet ship can't be fired upon. They snatch up the civilians and get the hell out of there with the Captain then either winning or dying saving everyone.
I've always believed that the most important part of the Enterprise-C's sacrifice at Narendra III was the "sacrifice" part. It may still have earned some respect and gratitude from the Klingons if they'd survived, but Klingon honor simply would not allow them to disrespect the memories of those who fell in battle fighting an immensely superior foe to try to save Klingon lives. I headcanon that the Enterprise-C's crew are among the few non-Klingons to enter Sto-Vo-Kor.

Scotty's best moves was on TNG ( Relics, I believe,) when he scolds LaForge for giving an accurate time estimate to the captain. He said you should always inflate the time so went you finish early you'll look like a real hero. I follow that advice, lol
How can poisoning a planet be a genius move? He went with a "means justify the ends" logic and completely lost track of proportionality here. It might have worked, but at what price? Also, the sister ship is called YAMATO.

I've always thought that scene did not need to be written that way. If Kirk is so great, then why make Harriman look so weak? A great leader will still look great next to an average leader, but the average leader would only look great next to the mediocre one. If this guy has attained the rank of Captain, and become the Captain of the new Enterprise with all the fame that name carries, why would he be incompetent, nervous, and wet-behind-the-ears? It would have been far better if Chekov was the new Captain. He then tries some ideas without hesitation, then puts Kirk in command while he will go to the deflector (after discussing the idea with Scotty), but Kirk stops him. He reminds him that this the Enterprise is his ship now and it's Captain is needed here (on the bridge). Then Kirk says "I'll take care of it" and the rest plays out as is. None of this would diminish Chekov OR Kirk, and Kirk still gets to be the hero.
How in the hell did Harriman ever achieve the rank of Captain? He's clearly incompetent. His indecision is not just a lack of experience - he's a captain, he should have at least 10 years of experience under his belt - he's actually unfit to lead. Edit: I looked it up. Apparently he had rich parents who bought him a commission and pulled some strings to get him a captaincy. The reason he was on the Ent B was because it was a rundown cruise and he was never going to be its permanent captain. According to Alan Ruck, Rick "Asshole" Berman told him: _"Yeah, we figured that Harriman came from a wealthy, politically connected family, and they sort of bought you this job as a stepping stone into a political career."_

When Uhura was going to buy a tribble, it was discussed how many credits it would cost (she got it for free). Maybe his parents used other kinds of persuasive ‘payments’. There are bitcoins even now.

How about the Voyager episode where the ship is trapped in the Void? Janeway cooperates with many other ships that are trapped, in order to escape. Not an easy feat, since most of them were used to fighting each other! But sure, Sisko punching Q is somehow better than that! /s

Good on you sir! While the skills, abilities, and legacies of the captains of the "hero ships" of Trek each speak for themselves, I think none speak quite as powerfully as Captain Rachel Garrett. Kirk and crew saved the Federation countless times, and by the sheer weight of his reputation, convinced their then enemy of the sincerity of the Federation's olive branch. Picard and crew, the reluctant yet resolute warrior and consummate diplomat, not only helped the Federation face down some of her greatest foes, but even managed to keep peace with her allies in time of a civil war. Sisko and crew were the galvanizing force that brought the great powers together to help protect all of us from the machinations of the Dominion. Janeway and crew brought to Starfleet a wealth of information they may have only ever seen a century from now, chief among it the tools to fight off the Borg. Captain Rachel Garrett, and the crew of her Enterprise, by making a single selfless sacrifice, shifted the balance of power this half of the galaxy for decades, and brought two mortal enemies not only to peaceful terms, but to an alliance of powers. God rest ye, Captain Garrett.
His back story apparently is that his family was very influential and pulled strings to get him the captain position, he tried his best but knew he wasn't capable, that's why he turned command over to Kirk in the emergency.

And unlike so many others in his position that I could mention ::cough:: Drumpty-bone-spurs::cough:: They've never had "no" as an answer and so never grew as a human being, leaving them with a toddler's mentality. At least Harriman knew that he was experientially underserved and took the best option for everyone, leaving him open to ridicule or charges of cowardice by those who wouldn't (rather than couldn't) understand his decision. With a powerful/influential family, that was a hard move for him, so I actually feel for him. It takes a big "man" (this is a particularly male trait, but by _no means exclusively_ - no, I'm not a misandrist in the slightest!) to know and accept one's failings, and a bigger man to admit it publicly. I say props to him for going against what his family (who, were this real life, had undoubtedly pushed him to do: i.e. enter Starfleet and get rushed up the ranks using their influence) would have expected him to do, even if it cost him his life and that of everyone on the ship because his ego wouldn't let him back down and hand over control to the better person for the job. Keeping this in RL, I _always_ admire people who are able to stand up to familial and/or peer pressure, _especially_ if it has to be made public. E.g. much as I don't really rate him in general, the current Prince Edward had been - at the very least at his father's behest - forced to join the Royal Marines on leaving uni (or during it. It was a long time ago!). All male heirs of the monarch and the heirs apparent & presumptive (depending on the generation as to which they are) traditionally join one of the forces, assuming they're fit to do so. Charles and Andrew both joined the Royal Navy, and served for enough years to honestly (not getting preferential treatment) promoted to, iirc, commander of a battle ship. (My memory is hazy about the details, but they're genuine veterans) Despite what's come out about him over the years, which does tarnish his status, Andrew was a genuine hero when he fought in the Falklands War (the Navy and the govt gave him the chance to not go, probably because they were scared of him being captured and therefore becoming a trophy/bargaining chip by the Argentinians. He and his family said he was going and that was that). His job was mainly flying his helicopter at relatively few feet - at a consistent height (27'? Something like that) above the water and between a target ship and heat-seaking missiles (exocets). This had the effect of literally "taking the heat off" the ships and very skillfully managing to keep out of their way, eventually crashing the missile into the sea. He (just like his fellow pilots) saved countless hundreds of lives every day by doing this. (The missile that got one of the ships, leaving high fatalities and horrendous burn injuries on survivors, just goes to show how important that job was. It takes balls of steel to be a helicopter pilot doing that!) He's a _bona fide_ hero, as are his cohorts (what a shame he's tarnished that). The late Prince Philip served in the RN during WWII including having his ship blown up under him - iirc, he was a lieutenant at the time, despite being a prince of two countries, Greece and Denmark. No accelerated rank to get him behind a desk for him! And he would never have accepted that for his kids (don't count honourary commands, that's just tradition). Imagine then, with that sort of history in his immediate family, let alone the centuries of fighting royalty we all learn about, how Edward must have felt going to his parents and telling them that though he could pass the selection, and I believe was still in the process of doing so (he might have completed it. I did hear from those going through it with him that he was treated identically to them), he knew that the military was not for him and he wanted to be involved in producing plays, tv shows, etc. (Apparently acting as growing up was one of the typical family activities.) No, he's not gay, he just loves the business. Word got out that his father was _not_ pleased (understatement) and it would probably have been easier to come out as trans (which would undoubtedly have confused and pissed off Philip in equal measure!) And then he had the gutter press calling him a coward. A number of his Marine colleagues spoke up for him, saying that he was really good at it, but it's just not for everyone, regardless of skill levels. Eventually the hoo-ha died down, but even now, some bitchy people still make snide comments in the media. It must have been 40 years ago or so! I know this is a bit of a tangent (also an understatement!), but it can put Harriman's actions into even greater perspective IMHO. Doing your parents' bidding in such a manner can control your life even if you try not to let it. Any real Harrimans out there, my respect!

She was going to hand it to Carey, but Chakotay argued in favor of Torres' demonstrated skill over Carey having more of a service record. ...and it wasn't that crazy to consolidate crews. They were all Federation citizens removed from any proximity to the conflict which separated them (the Federation/Cardassian border issues)
Let's give herriman a break here, more than likely, he was likely the shakedown cruise capitan, Starfleet has a tendency to take the least experienced captains and put them in the big chair to test the new ship, herriman being inexperienced in a crisis, did the right thing by asking Kirk for help
In Harriman's defense, he had probably only recently been promoted to Captain by the time that the Enterprise-B was commissioned, thus his notable lack of experience
I'm a Janeway fan. It's probably because I grew up reading "Swiss Family Robinson" and "Robinson Crusoe" and love imagining how to survive while stranded in a remote island. "The Voyager" came decades before the first survivor reality shows were shown on TV and the crews' adventures to try to survive and get back home resonated with me.
Kirk is deffinently the best captain. TNG is my favorite series but my favorite Captain has got to be Kirk. He's more well-rounded and a better option then any other Starfleet captain in most scenarios.
In novels, Nog also beat the Kobayashi Maru test, TWICE! Once, when the commander of the enemy ship demanded his surrender, he said "Name your price!" He the proceeded to haggle with the commander until the simulation crashed. The other time, he set the self destruct of the ship after the enemy had boarded and closed in, but set the volume low enough so that only his Ferengi ears could pick it up. He'd also used a tractor beam to nudge the KM towards the correct side of the neutral zone. His ship blew up, taking all the enemy ships with it, and saving the KM in the process.
That "terrorist" crew goes on to become some of her most loyal and best officers for Janeway. An her BEST moment and shoulda been here too I'd said when past AND future her in the series' end totally outsmart and own the Borg. Which is basically her and her crew's specialty at the end of the series

*Sisko and Picard are VERY close.* Picard wrongly often believes diplomacy works both ways (Crystalline Entity, Telling Romulans on their out of phase/cloak ship tech). Sisko had to fight Klingons/Cardassians/Jem' Hadar at ground zero. Both Sacrifice of Angels and Pale Moonlight strategies were great, but Sisko's man to man social and strategic skills at "The Siege of AR-558" is why Benjamin Lafayette Sisko (leaving his baseball at DS9) can equal Picard 'There are FOUR lights" level.

What about the year of hell in Voyager? When Janeway and crew suffered long and heavy, while the ship degenerates more and more, and she finally rams it with all it's remaining force into the time ship. Great moments. I can't forget the scene, after another ally ship hit the Voyager, Janeway had a box seat with a clear view right into space. Though, what a nice plot-device those emergency shields are, still working when basically 90% of the ship is trashed.......
My favorite thing about Sisko punching Q is that it wasn't out of rage which, since it was Q, would be totally acceptable. The dude literally asked for it repeatedly and Sisko just said "fine, have it your way". [edit] The civilian ship stuck in the neutral zone is on its own. Not gonna risk a war that could kill billions to save a ship that should have been more careful. Heading 180 mark 0 and warp home.
Aaron I think the Prime Directive has a section about having to respond to distress calls from civilian ships🤷🏼♀️ The test is dumb anyway...it’s the same thing for like how many years?...How do u react in an unwinnable situation...u either get blown up, or like Troi, you gotta order a person to their death to save the rest of the crew.
The expanded material actually does a wonderful job of fleshing out his character. Turns out that he got the command position on Enterprise because his father was a rather influential, high-ranking Admiral. He admits that he wasn't ready for the job but actually grows into the role extremely well. Worth looking up on Memory Beta!
Except that if Tuvix lived then Tuvok and Neelix would have been gone forever as separate entities. I couldn’t help wondering if they could have cloned Tuvix or something similar. Maybe stored his DNA and memory until that could be done. 7 of Nine wasn’t there yet as it was just season two, but maybe with the saved Tuvix genetic material, she could have helped to bring him back with all her nanotechnology. Anyway, Tuvok and Neelix deserved to have their own lives back.
As for Picard, his best moment is easily the end of Darmok, where in the face of Riker getting the ship nearly destroyed (yet again), Picard waltzes onto the bridge, takes charge and in the space of a few moments gets the Tamarians to stand down.

That may have been true had it been at all his plot and mechanation. In reality, Garak played Captain Sisko like a fiddle the entire time to bring about a result that he wanted. Had they followed the plan precisely like Sisko wanted, the Romulans would likely have been convinced to join the Dominion. Garak supplied not only the data rod, but the programmer, and the cover for all the inconsistencies that he knew would inevitably show up due to his previous experience with them.

That wasn't really Sisko's decision though, he was running an entirely different op with the same basic goal, he was just being manipulated into following Garak's plan, as a matter of fact the fake plan was also Garak's plan.
Picard convincing the Klingon HC to give him a cloaked ship with only his “gratitude” in exchange was brilliant, especially when he told them if he didn’t get the ship, he would get from Garwon’s enemies - and then they would have his “gratitude”.

I was about to point this out too. The USS Yamato is repeatedly mentioned and shown up until its demise thanks to one Iconian program upload. Yamamoto however was indeed the japanese Admiral in command for the Pearl Habor attack, among many other commands he had - including, as gar as I know, a short time on both Yamato and Musashi.
Space Battleship Yamato was also in Star Blazers. Even the Japanese didn't favour Yamamoto :)

I was going to mention that as well. Yamamoto was the famous Japanese Admiral in World War II who had studied in the U.S. some years prior to the war, while the Yamato was there biggest battleship (which Yamamoto used as his flagship during the Battle of Midway). The names are similar so people easily get mixed up. To me, maybe it's like the word "banana," where you might accidentally put in too many "na's" (or "ma's/mo's") in this case.

I think Janeway's decision to combine the crew was the only viable one -- and despite the Maquis disdain for Starfleet, _everybody_ wanted to get home. I don't think it would have gone well if the Maquis tried taking over the ship, either -- if Janeway had just locked them all in the brig, there wouldn't have been much a crew to run the ship. If the Maquis tried to mutiny and failed, then both sides would have probably taken casualties, the Starfleet crew would have been even worse off, and the Maquis would be stuck in the brig anyway. If the Maquis _did_ successfully take over the ship, they would still be low on hands, especially if they killed the remaining Starfleet crew or abandoned them on a planet. The Maquis might have traded tech and such to improve their odds of getting home, and used tactics that Janeway would never allowed, but I don't think they would have done as well as the combined crew did.

What? No love for Kirk's destruction of the war computer that calculates and orders the deaths of civilians on two worlds warring for 500 years? I'd say crashing what was essentially a high stakes game of StarCraft in order to bring the threat of real war between two civilizations unprepared or willing to go to such lengths was a brilliant gamble.
Tbh, like Spock, I was more impressed with Kirk's DAZZLING display of logic against Nomad. Or his focused anger on the deadly gas, warp speed cloud in Obsession.
@@token1371 Norman was impressive, but also proved that his programming was deficient. The obvious answer to the Kirk-Mudd conundrum was that Kirk was lying with his initial statement that Mudd only lies. He only mostly lies. :p As far as Kirk's response in Obsession, it was more Ahab than Walter Raleigh. He was an emotional wreck for most of it and responded with a mixture of fear, anger, self loathing, and vengeance. Not one of his best moments, but definitely one of his most human. Frankly, I would put up both of his instances of the "corbomite maneuver." The first time was a brilliant gambit versus the Fesivius, and the second was a quick witted stroke of intelligence manipulation. Frankly, a list of brilliant Kirk moves could be made with plenty of room for debate.

Imo, it wasn't Ahab. In Moby Dick, the whale was the hunted. In Obsession, the humans (red corpuscles) were the hunted. Imo, Kirk's reaction was stubborn. He regretted not acting quick which caused his crew to die. But, I liked your analogy. The Corbomite Maneuver explanation was on point but the end was more like poker. The Enterprise was going to be destroyed by a superior ship, and Kirk had zero options, but lucky. Great debate.
I'd put the Corbomite Maneuver slightly higher, but yeah, I love how he brought peace to two worlds by forcing the threat of real war upon them.
@@token1371 Now I see where I misread. Yes, the level of logical trickery Kirk used against Nomad was impressive. As for the Corbomite Maneuver being like poker, yes it was. He even said as much in the episode. Specifically that they were approaching the problem like it was chess up to that point, but that inspiration from poker. More specifically the more skill based aspect of poker. While it is still an element of chance, the bluff is more about reading an adversary and playing their fears and doubts against them. In the case of the Fesivius, Kirk bet on Balok having the same sense of self preservation as most lifeforms. In that respect, it is equal measures skill and gamble.

Federation and Klingons might have had an uneasy relationship in Garrett's time, but they also had a treaty. It wasn't out of the blue to take a side, it was responding to their ally.

He was the first captain to command a battle ship for starfleet. The dominion war just proved humanity is still flawed and we have a long ways to go still.
i think on this list is Janeway's decision to make a temporary treaty with the Borg. The result was Seven of Nine's release and an addition to the crew. it also provided Janeway the start of the path as the "knower of all" about the Borg (IMHO, at least). In the finale, the future Janeway is highly regarded as the expert on the Borg Collective.
One minor teensy addition I would have made to the entry for Captain Garrett was that ultimately through her sacrifice she was able to show The Klingon Empire that, perhaps for the first time, that The Federation was made up of Warriors who understood the need for sacrifice. I say this for a couple of reasons:
Throughout the documented timeline of events in the conflict between the Klingons and The Federation whether it was Kirk, or an alternate-timeline Picard, or a Mirror Universe Rebellion at Terok-Nor against their oppressors or a host of other situations there were ample opportunities in which Klingons got to face Terrans as opponents on the field of battle. They even had a number of instances in which various opponents even earned a begrudging respect of the Klingons as formidable warriors. However, there was always this sort of 'reticence' to fully commit to the concept of blatant, unmitigated adherence to self-sacrifice on the field of battle.
That is NOT to say that Klingons never saw Terrans die in combat or to show the courage to face death with Honor, that certainly occurred abundantly. I am saying that with Captain Garrett I believe it was the first time they really got to see the mettle of StarFleet in what really, if you think about it, was a true Kobayashi Maru scenario. Why do I mention the Kobayashi Maru (heh, and considering you brought up Kirk's own issues with it)? I mention this because, unlike the Federation, to the Klingons the Kobayashi Maru Scenario is NOT a "Lose/Lose". It's a "Win/Win" and THAT is what I feel was lacking in the fundamental understanding between the Federation and The Klingon Empire.
To the Klingons, the concept of a "wasted death" in glorious combat was never a question, so therefore there is no idea of a "Lose" merely in the face of inevitable defeat, in fact its one of their highest moments of Honor to go into battle knowing you will lose but for the sake of your own Honor and your Warrior's Spirit. In viewing, the Federation they would likely have seen ample evidence of a captain or crew no doubt be willing to fight to the death but ultimately with the intent to win some goal even during a rout. While this is certainly honorable to the Klingon Code that is not the Core of their being. I believe in ample situations and lines of evidence the Klingons demonstrated an even higher respect for those demonstrations of honor in which Death was certain, no measurable victory was possible and defeat was inevitable and yet they would go to Sto-vo-kor with a song in their hearts because they chose to die as they lived, as warriors.
Captain Garrett KNEW (even before the whole being sucked into an alternate timeline thing gave her even greater insight) that putting herself between the defenseless Klingons and the barbaric Romulans was going to get her killed but she simply couldnt watch it and write a damn report to send back to Starfleet. She saw that her death and the death of her crew was inevitable and the chance that they could save the colony was impossible(she wasnt even thinking about the longterm consequences, thats where the whole alternate timeline in which she got to see The Bigger Picture comes in). She HAD to fight them regardless and she knew going into it they would die but that was the pivotal moment, the acceptance of Death on the terms of a warrior with no hope of any victory other than holding true to one's Honor.
THAT is what struck to the Heart of the Klingon Empire, that one of their enemies could be so like themselves when up till then they may have been seen as enemies, worthy of respect surely, but that they still remained "alien" to them. Through her sacrifice to defend an enemy, in a hopeless battle with only the promise of Death to be had she went into the fires of battle and showed that we Terrans were capable of understanding what it meant to be Klingons.

"Janeway making an alliance with the Borg" and "Janeway deciding to be assimilated by the Borg" should have been on this list. Those were some crazy but effective solutions. And if Picard setting the auto-destruct made the list, Janeway destroyed or started to destroy Voyager on soooo many occasions. But Sisko punching Q was brilliant apparently.

Many people often forget that Chakotay & Torres both were in academy and Chakotay was a CDR in starfleet before joining the Maquis.
I so want to see him getting back into Starfleet after the end of VOY. He had experience beforehand and showed that he can be a reliable officer.
Sure, all the marquis would have to stand trial after the return, but all they did during those years should be weighted in favor of them.
So him joining back into Starfleet proper, mabye after some hearings and tests isn't too far off.

Long story short, Commanded by Chakotay, tactical observer 7 of 9, a Romulan chief engineer "with a Romulan cloaking device", Navigation/con Ltjg Nog, a klingon 1st officer, an Enduran security chief and a holographic DR Bashire who`s bedside manor has been mocked up so much while he`s making you comfortable, you might bleed to death. For occasional comedic relief. Almost forgot to mention the USS Constitution is very well equipped in Laded Armor & midi-phasic shielding "from STNG" to hide in a stars corona. Klingon disrupters, of course starfleet issue photon torpedo`s.

So it is Kirk alone who is left to come up with the genius solution to save his ship with seconds to go before destruction. And Kirk delivers with typical flair and cunning. Coming up with the Corbomite bluff making it up brilliantly as he went along under the most intense pressure possible.

Janeway didn't hand over chief engineering to the Maquis. The chief engineer was a federation officer until being killed later on, and Maquis Torres, who was already integrated into the crew was selected afterwards.
Not to mention that Torres did attend Starfleet Academy but dropped out before graduation. It's not like she had no clue about how Starfleet runs a ship.
@@alanbear6505 Plus, the number of Maquis that where 'integrated' was a very small number, not nearly enough to mutiny or even run Voyager themselves. They needed the Starfleet officers, and Janeway knew it. Likewise, she added some considerable talent to her ship in doing so. One or two small problems aside.
Janeway should of had so many more. Janeway siding with the borg? Janeway blows up the krenim ship, with everyone else's shields down to hopefully alter time so year of hell didn't happen and all those species' restored. This has to be on the list, was such a gamble to take.
Janeway was a badass. She had to be all alone with no federation backup.
How was janeway siding with the borg, the greatest threat of the federation, against the one species that are capable of defeating them and who could have been allies (but even if not it wouldn't be as bad as they could actually defeat them), genius? It was an idiotic idea, and that's not even taking into account that she know the truce would be broken the moment they weren't needed. The only genius thing about it was that they got seven to join the crew.
She also has the WORST decision ever made by a Star Fleet Captain.

So sisko commiting war crimes against freedom fighters (call them terrorists if you want but as much as the show tried to put them in a bad light, they had a point considering that the federation abandoned them and their worlds to facists and then ignored their pleas for help and leaving them with the two options of either sumitting to said facists or fighting back) was a genius thing? If you are going to pick a sisko commits a war crime, why not put when he manipulated the romulans into the war with the dominion.
Actually, Kirk didn't 'cheat' the test. To cheat you would need to know the question that would be on the test or be able to acquire the answer during test. Since there was no correct solution to the kobayashi maru simulation, there would be no way to cheat to achieve the solution. By reprogramming the simulation he created his own version of the simulation, which, being the writer of the new simulation, he already knew the solution. It's not cheating when you write your own simulation, it's called creative thinking... LOL
Best solution I ever saw was a character using an obscure law about trial by combat. While they are locked into that ritual the civilian ship and Starfleet ship can't be fired upon. They snatch up the civilians and get the hell out of there with the Captain then either winning or dying saving everyone.

I've always believed that the most important part of the Enterprise-C's sacrifice at Narendra III was the "sacrifice" part. It may still have earned some respect and gratitude from the Klingons if they'd survived, but Klingon honor simply would not allow them to disrespect the memories of those who fell in battle fighting an immensely superior foe to try to save Klingon lives. I headcanon that the Enterprise-C's crew are among the few non-Klingons to enter Sto-Vo-Kor.

Scotty's best moves was on TNG ( Relics, I believe,) when he scolds LaForge for giving an accurate time estimate to the captain. He said you should always inflate the time so went you finish early you'll look like a real hero.

I've always thought that scene did not need to be written that way. If Kirk is so great, then why make Harriman look so weak? A great leader will still look great next to an average leader, but the average leader would only look great next to the mediocre one. If this guy has attained the rank of Captain, and become the Captain of the new Enterprise with all the fame that name carries, why would he be incompetent, nervous, and wet-behind-the-ears? It would have been far better if Chekov was the new Captain. He then tries some ideas without hesitation, then puts Kirk in command while he will go to the deflector (after discussing the idea with Scotty), but Kirk stops him. He reminds him that this the Enterprise is his ship now and it's Captain is needed here (on the bridge). Then Kirk says "I'll take care of it" and the rest plays out as is. None of this would diminish Chekov OR Kirk, and Kirk still gets to be the hero.
How in the hell did Harriman ever achieve the rank of Captain? He's clearly incompetent. His indecision is not just a lack of experience - he's a captain, he should have at least 10 years of experience under his belt - he's actually unfit to lead.
Edit: I looked it up. Apparently he had rich parents who bought him a commission and pulled some strings to get him a captaincy. The reason he was on the Ent B was because it was a rundown cruise and he was never going to be its permanent captain.

Good on you sir! While the skills, abilities, and legacies of the captains of the "hero ships" of Trek each speak for themselves, I think none speak quite as powerfully as Captain Rachel Garrett. Kirk and crew saved the Federation countless times, and by the sheer weight of his reputation, convinced their then enemy of the sincerity of the Federation's olive branch. Picard and crew, the reluctant yet resolute warrior and consummate diplomat, not only helped the Federation face down some of her greatest foes, but even managed to keep peace with her allies in time of a civil war. Sisko and crew were the galvanizing force that brought the great powers together to help protect all of us from the machinations of the Dominion. Janeway and crew brought to Starfleet a wealth of information they may have only ever seen a century from now, chief among it the tools to fight off the Borg.
Captain Rachel Garrett, and the crew of her Enterprise, by making a single selfless sacrifice, shifted the balance of power this half of the galaxy for decades, and brought two mortal enemies not only to peaceful terms, but to an alliance of powers. God rest ye, Captain Garrett.
I feel sorry for Harriman. A character thrown under the bus of making Kirk look good.
His back story apparently is that his family was very influential and pulled strings to get him the captain position, he tried his best but knew he wasn't capable, that's why he turned command over to Kirk in the emergency.

At least Harriman knew that he was experientially underserved and took the best option for everyone, leaving him open to ridicule or charges of cowardice by those who wouldn't (rather than couldn't) understand his decision. With a powerful/influential family, that was a hard move for him, so I actually feel for him.
It takes a big "man" (this is a particularly male trait, but by _no means exclusively_ - no, I'm not a misandrist in the slightest!) to know and accept one's failings, and a bigger man to admit it publicly. I say props to him for going against what his family (who, were this real life, had undoubtedly pushed him to do: i.e. enter Starfleet and get rushed up the ranks using their influence) would have expected him to do, even if it cost him his life and that of everyone on the ship because his ego wouldn't let him back down and hand over control to the better person for the job.
Keeping this in RL, I _always_ admire people who are able to stand up to familial and/or peer pressure, _especially_ if it has to be made public. E.g. much as I don't really rate him in general, the current Prince Edward had been - at the very least at his father's behest - forced to join the Royal Marines on leaving uni (or during it. It was a long time ago!). All male heirs of the monarch and the heirs apparent & presumptive (depending on the generation as to which they are) traditionally join one of the forces, assuming they're fit to do so.
Charles and Andrew both joined the Royal Navy, and served for enough years to honestly (not getting preferential treatment) promoted to, iirc, commander of a battle ship. (My memory is hazy about the details, but they're genuine veterans)
Despite what's come out about him over the years, which does tarnish his status, Andrew was a genuine hero when he fought in the Falklands War (the Navy and the govt gave him the chance to not go, probably because they were scared of him being captured and therefore becoming a trophy/bargaining chip by the Argentinians. He and his family said he was going and that was that). His job was mainly flying his helicopter at relatively few feet - at a consistent height (27'? Something like that) above the water and between a target ship and heat-seaking missiles (exocets). This had the effect of literally "taking the heat off" the ships and very skillfully managing to keep out of their way, eventually crashing the missile into the sea.
He (just like his fellow pilots) saved countless hundreds of lives every day by doing this. (The missile that got one of the ships, leaving high fatalities and horrendous burn injuries on survivors, just goes to show how important that job was. It takes balls of steel to be a helicopter pilot doing that!) He's a _bona fide_ hero, as are his cohorts (what a shame he's tarnished that). The late Prince Philip served in the RN during WWII including having his ship blown up under him - iirc, he was a lieutenant at the time, despite being a prince of two countries, Greece and Denmark. No accelerated rank to get him behind a desk for him! And he would never have accepted that for his kids (don't count honourary commands, that's just tradition).
Imagine then, with that sort of history in his immediate family, let alone the centuries of fighting royalty we all learn about, how Edward must have felt going to his parents and telling them that though he could pass the selection, and I believe was still in the process of doing so (he might have completed it. I did hear from those going through it with him that he was treated identically to them), he knew that the military was not for him and he wanted to be involved in producing plays, tv shows, etc. (Apparently acting as growing up was one of the typical family activities.) No, he's not gay, he just loves the business.
Word got out that his father was _not_ pleased (understatement) and it would probably have been easier to come out as trans (which would undoubtedly have confused and pissed off Philip in equal measure!) And then he had the gutter press calling him a coward. A number of his Marine colleagues spoke up for him, saying that he was really good at it, but it's just not for everyone, regardless of skill levels. Eventually the hoo-ha died down, but even now, some bitchy people still make snide comments in the media. It must have been 40 years ago or so!
I know this is a bit of a tangent (also an understatement!), but it can put Harriman's actions into even greater perspective IMHO. Doing your parents' bidding in such a manner can control your life even if you try not to let it. Any real Harrimans out there, my respect!
Deep Space Nine is the absolute BEST of all of Star Trek! It’s impossible to pick a favorite crew member, they should’ve gotten at least one movie!

...and it wasn't that crazy to consolidate crews. They were all Federation citizens removed from any proximity to the conflict which separated them (the Federation/Cardassian border issues)
Let's give herriman a break here, more than likely, he was likely the shakedown cruise capitan, Starfleet has a tendency to take the least experienced captains and put them in the big chair to test the new ship, herriman being inexperienced in a crisis, did the right thing by asking Kirk for help
In Harriman's defense, he had probably only recently been promoted to Captain by the time that the Enterprise-B was commissioned, thus his notable lack of experience
The fan production "Of Gods and Men" shows the actor returning to the role and doing a fine job as captain.
I'm a Janeway fan. It's probably because I grew up reading "Swiss Family Robinson" and "Robinson Crusoe" and love imagining how to survive while stranded in a remote island. "The Voyager" came decades before the first survivor reality shows were shown on TV and the crews' adventures to try to survive and get back home resonated with me.

Kirk is deffinently the best captain. TNG is my favorite series but my favorite Captain has got to be Kirk. He's more well-rounded and a better option then any other Starfleet captain in most scenarios.

In novels, Nog also beat the Kobayashi Maru test, TWICE! Once, when the commander of the enemy ship demanded his surrender, he said "Name your price!" He the proceeded to haggle with the commander until the simulation crashed. The other time, he set the self destruct of the ship after the enemy had boarded and closed in, but set the volume low enough so that only his Ferengi ears could pick it up. He'd also used a tractor beam to nudge the KM towards the correct side of the neutral zone. His ship blew up, taking all the enemy ships with it, and saving the KM in the process.

That "terrorist" crew goes on to become some of her most loyal and best officers for Janeway. An her BEST moment and shoulda been here too I'd said when past AND future her in the series' end totally outsmart and own the Borg. Which is basically her and her crew's specialty at the end of the series

*Sisko and Picard are VERY close.* Picard wrongly often believes diplomacy works both ways (Crystalline Entity, Telling Romulans on their out of phase/cloak ship tech). Sisko had to fight Klingons/Cardassians/Jem' Hadar at ground zero. Both Sacrifice of Angels and Pale Moonlight strategies were great, but Sisko's man to man social and strategic skills at "The Siege of AR-558" is why Benjamin Lafayette Sisko (leaving his baseball at DS9) can equal Picard 'There are FOUR lights" level.

Took me a while to realize Kenneth Marshall (Michael Eddington) was Colwyn from the movie Krull.
I'm a Peter Yates fan, I saw Krull in the theater, and I had no idea. I just assumed Ken Marshall's career ended after Krull and Marco Parlo.

Number 6 proves Sisko's crime and I would've called Starfleet Comnand in a second to report this.
What about the year of hell in Voyager? When Janeway and crew suffered long and heavy, while the ship degenerates more and more, and she finally rams it with all it's remaining force into the time ship. Great moments. I can't forget the scene, after another ally ship hit the Voyager, Janeway had a box seat with a clear view right into space. Though, what a nice plot-device those emergency shields are, still working when basically 90% of the ship is trashed.......
My favorite thing about Sisko punching Q is that it wasn't out of rage which, since it was Q, would be totally acceptable. The dude literally asked for it repeatedly and Sisko just said "fine, have it your way". [edit] The civilian ship stuck in the neutral zone is on its own. Not gonna risk a war that could kill billions to save a ship that should have been more careful. Heading 180 mark 0 and warp home.
Aaron I think the Prime Directive has a section about having to respond to distress calls from civilian ships🤷🏼♀️ The test is dumb anyway...it’s the same thing for like how many years?...How do u react in an unwinnable situation...u either get blown up, or like Troi, you gotta order a person to their death to save the rest of the crew.
Create a warp core breech and eject it next to the Klingon ship.
Could have just opened hailing frequencies and ligma'd the Klingons, wiggled the aft of the ship and say "You want this, huh?"
Great idea for a compilation (Kirk and Wrath of Khan is the winner of course). Painful US style ‘punchy’ delivery renders this unwatchable though.

The expanded material actually does a wonderful job of fleshing out his character. Turns out that he got the command position on Enterprise because his father was a rather influential, high-ranking Admiral. He admits that he wasn't ready for the job but actually grows into the role extremely well. Worth looking up on Memory Beta!

Except that if Tuvix lived then Tuvok and Neelix would have been gone forever as separate entities. I couldn’t help wondering if they could have cloned Tuvix or something similar. Maybe stored his DNA and memory until that could be done. 7 of Nine wasn’t there yet as it was just season two, but maybe with the saved Tuvix genetic material, she could have helped to bring him back with all her nanotechnology. Anyway, Tuvok and Neelix deserved to have their own lives back.
