  • Friends, we come now to one of the most important periods of the liturgical year: Lent. During this time of preparation, the Church asks us to cultivate a deeper friendship with God through prayer, to control and reorder our desires for physical goods through fasting, and to show our love in the concrete way of giving alms.

“Take the time…” is a very symbolic phrase … for me, it means take the time doing good with people around me, of course, my family comes first, then, take the time to pray the Rosary, join online Mass, no matter how busy the day is, and so on and so forth … “
Jesus took the time reaching out to His Apostles, teaching in synagogues, or anywhere He went where people gather and heard Him spoke in parables…!”

I'm currently a protestant, but last Advent I decided to follow the St Philip's Fast, and I found it very fruitful. Because of how good it was, I decided to adopt the Great Fast from the Eastern church this Lent, a 49 day fast with quite strict rules of no meat or fish, dairy, poultry, or wine or oil(excepting certain saints' feasts). There is so much in fasting that is fruitful for the spirit. Thank the Lord Jesus Christ for all that is Good in this life that we can enjoy, and for the reminder that we cannot live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God the Father. Amen.

Growing up in faith is an intentional endeavor. It does not emerge from living in the circumstancial drift. What intentional fasting is revealing to me are my addictions, fasting helps me shift from « they have me » to « I have them ». Prayer, for me, helps cultivate another form of hunger. Alms giving is my area of improvement.

There are just angry people out there. I noticed in the comments for last week's Sunday mass on Ascension Presents, some Christian fundamentalist was leaving angry responses on many of the comments.
Coincidentally (or not,) on an Ash Wednesday service, some guy left a comment about how satisfying this, their 2nd mass of the day, was. This time, some angry Catholic dude had to jump in and tell the first guy how he really should be doing in person services.
Some people need things to be exactly their way. If things are not precisely aligned, then they become like the dog who must make his mark on those grounds. 💦, if you know what I mean.
p.s. I will introduce Mr Angry Fundamentalist to Mr Angry Catholic, and challenge them to find Christ's love in a dialog.

While I was a student in Philadelphia I had gone to a local Baptist church with 15-20 people any given Sunday. The pastor there had urged his community to give back to the church generously, but to give it cheerfully. (2 Corinthians 9:7) So whenever it came time for offering there was celebratory music and everyone got up and danced their way to the front to give their offering. I think of that as we go in to the season of Lenten alms giving that this is not some burdensome task we undertake, but something we can do cheerfully, praising God, loving our neighbor, and trusting God to provide for our material needs.

Lent//40 Days for Life. When I fast, hunger reminds me to pray. When I pray, I don't feel hungry. I invite you to spend an hour in front of an abortion facility or the referral centers in pro-life states. Pray, Fast and Peaceful Prayer Vigil for the Sanctity of Human Life and the end to abortion (and the death penalty-my added intention).

@@bishoprobertbarron4605 Fr. Regula had told me more than once what a testimony I am to the Church in my almsgiving, especially to the poor and those in need. I am also a out-of-state caregiver which has been very challenging for the past year and a half. I am a giver without expecting anything in return. I was told this morning by a Monsenior visiting from Ireland, I need to start thinking of myself because I won't be any good to someone if I am not good to myself.

Thank you Bishop Barron. I pray a lot but giving all those who ask for money is a very difficult thing for me. Instead I walk into the street and if I see some pan handlers I give them few bucks. This way they do not keep on asking for more. If we keep on giving all those who ask, there will be no end. I hope Jesus is pleased with me.

    Hello Father,
One thing you said about fasting really struck home with me.I think you were quoting from Thomas Merton when you said, “Our desires have to be disciplined so that the deeper hungers of the heart and the soul can emerge” I really like and understand that perfectly well.
    Thanks

      Hello Father,
I didn’t even know I had a profile on RUclips only Facebook. I can’t donate online as requested because I don’t have nor want a bank account. Besides, I wouldn’t trust online transactions.
My favourite way of giving alms is through the Latin Mass and street beggars some of whom I know pretty well. It’s nice to see the money bringing a smile to people’s faces.

prayer is in fact unlearning all things before God's presence, we need not structure our prayer, it should be heart to heart, one to one, child's cry and mothers hug, like that. All we need in prayer is to go empty, not concealing anything and leave all the shame behind, allow the tears to flow, falling down in adoration in front of "The Most Holy Eucharistic real presence of God" 🙏
