  • Friends, what is the “dark night of the soul”? How does it differ from general depression, sadness, or confusion? That's what Brandon Vogt and I explore in this new episode of “The Word on Fire Show.” We unpack this spiritual concept from St. John of the Cross, and discuss a famous saint from recent times who experienced this “dark night” in a profound way.
A listener asks, does God have a sense of humor? If so, is it objective so that everyone should find it funny?

I’m getting so much from your videos, I’m having a bit of a Dark Night of the soul myself at the moment , first week clean from a 17 year pill addiction, all my usual comforts , even food and sleep are absent. The only relief for me right now is staying as close as possible to my Heavenly Father.

Godspeed you Rachel! Definitely not an easy battle you are fighting, stay strong and I'll pray (altough I'm not got at it yet) for you so God can give you that strength. I'm also fighting a couple of dark and ugly addictions on my own, with the help of a friend and mostly important God's blessing I hope I can keep being strong and continue trying to live a better life and growing as a person.

I've once experienced 'the dark night of the soul' when on a 3 day Silent Retreat run by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart . I did a lot of reading on St John of the cross and found some parts very difficult to truly understand. During my prayers I asked our Lord that I might understand the loneliness and despair experienced by John of the Cross in The Dark night of the Soul.
The next day after spiritual direction from my priest I decided to meditate on a task that I was given. Once in a deep meditative state I felt God's presence in the world abruptly Leave... I started to cry as if totally alone.. in a world where there was no love, God’s Love. God's presence was nowhere to be felt. My Soul was in a vacuum of nothingness and I wept & wept. I called out to God to come back but there was nothing. I felt vulnerable and I started to despair. This lasted about 10 minutes until I could bear it no more.... Then as quickly as God's presence left me God's presence returned like the warmth of the sun on a winter's day. When I came out of my meditative state my face was awash with tears but my heart was leaping with joy. I felt safe again in God's return, in God’s Love.
I now truly understand when it is said that God loves us.. I now no longer take God's Love for granted because I know what it's like when it's not there.

I've had that experience before too but came back to being a much more devout Catholic. I found that Catholic theology is really much MUCH richer than any other Christian denominations'. It's not a surprise when you realize how long this Church has survived and fought varieties of heresies. I really suggest you read or watch St. Thomas Aquinas' and then St. Augustine and so on. So many Catholic saints out there have produced so many intellectual masterpieces that have sealed my faith in Catholicism.

How many of us think we’re going through The Dark Night of the Soul when we’re actually separated from God because of mortal sin on our souls which we may have forgotten about or are not aware of?
It’s the same with suffering. Most of us who suffer see ourselves as Job. But Job was a righteous man. Are we truly righteous and suffering as a means of high moral testing? Or is our suffering a form of chastisement as a means of bringing our actions back into line with God’s will?

    • @jessenewman6738

Some yes and sometimes suffering is just for our refinement so we can have a deeper intimacy with Jesus and be a more useful vessel for him. In both evangelical work or discipleship of new believers. We all are caked into the fellowship of the lords sufferings as Paul spoke of in Philippians

I recently found St.John of the cross and fell in love with his poetry. I think often of his suffering and solitude, and how those negative things were transformed into joy through relationship with Jesus. I have a chronic illness that gives me suffering and solitude and helplessness. But those things have propelled me to God, the relationship only deepened by my suffering. And St. John reassures me that if I have absolutely nothing left, I will always have the joy of my relationship with the Lord. Thank you for all your discussions of the Saints; they always interest me and inspire me

I was suddenly overwhelmed with the love of/for God. I was led to read St John of the Cross. I was immediately elated: this man was so much in love with God. I fully empathised.

I am so glad this episode brings up Mother Theresa and her depression in her final days, as people bring this up as if that was in some way a mark of failure of all that she was about and did for others. Her dark night of the soul was a way for her to reach into a greater realization of Christ's light and love especially as she entered into His rest. Wish more was said about that as well as Jordan Petersen's own dark night of the soul.

I get what you are saying, but Jordan Peteson is certainly going through a painful metanoia experience, but I don't think he has yet begun the path of Christian perfection, so I don't think we can accurately apply the dark night description to his particular experience.

Do you think, perhaps, they remember you and are praying for you now? I'm a veteran myself, Iraq, and far younger. However, I had a distinct experience some years after getting out. It was right before a rather intense period in my life, but I got the sense I was visited by a buddy who was killed over there. It was morning and I was right in the realm between asleep and awake, but I distinctly remember hearing a somewhat cheerful and disembodied, "looks like you'll have an interesting life!" in his voice. It's unique as that it's never happened before, and never happened since. Sometimes those fleeting bonds we share are far more important than we expect.

the analogy at the beginning of the video was perfect. There are songs about it.
    Unearthly night
    World you fear
Love lies lurking, a wounded dingo-dog
    Soon to decease
I have wandered my whole life long
The night becomes my bride and everything else must die
    World without end
    For me"
"The dark side's coming now, nothing is real
She'll never know just how I feel
From out of the shadows, she walks like a dream
Make me feel crazy, make me feel so mean
Ain't nothin' gonna save ya from a love that's blind
Slip through the dark side and cross that line"
    "Listen to the wind blow
    Down comes the night
    Run in the shadows
Damn your love, damn your lies
    Break the silence
Damn the dark, damn the light"

Incredible, the wonders of the Lord. I am going through what may be considered a Dark Night of the Soul right now. Though not a spiritual crisis, As the Bishop said it is a moment in which someone I deeply care about, though not inherently sinful, has faded for the moment and the Lord has become the center of attention. When I clicked on this video I had no idea what a Dark Night was, but now know the reason for my pain. After my God-given Eureka moment, I smiled from ear to ear. I have become aware of the problem of my relationship, and how I can change to become closer to God. Thank you Bishop, and thank you Lord. Praise be to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanks for this Bishop Barron and the word on fire theme. A year ago during the onslaught of the pandemic, I felt a disconnect from my religion and from God. I do not know if it was the dark night of the soul, but I felt empty, not depressed. I know the feeling of being depressed, that one was an existential dread. I questioned God, I questioned eternal life and I forgot or had a little amnesia of Christ. It was a dumbfounding experience, but once I asked my mother and my friends about it,I felt enlightened. Especially during mass during those times, it was a verse that told me that all my questions are answered in time. I sincerely felt a renewal, and I still often get disappointed with myself with sinning and being in disconnect with our Lord, but I am confident in His mercy and the gift of reconciliation. Ave Maria, Viva Christus Rex!

I love how BB describes closing our eyes, is a way of darkening our senses to the world, to convene with God, never has this occurred to me as I close my eyes to pray, I've just done it unconciously.. But what I love even more is how he describes closing our eyes to the world, the world is good, "we're not being puritanists.. Don't go down that path..." .. He's so right, his words are always absolute truth, and his delivery which is uniquely his own God given gift, is always true, real, authentic and humorous! Talents are nothing unless put to good use, put to God's use and for God's glory, which BB does, he's the only person on the web that can talk for hours without my getting a headache! God bless you Bishop, I pray the world will have you for many years to come 🙏🏻

The topic discussion was just so amazing! I have just learned a lot of new things and I even got to finish half of my easter reflection that I will be presenting within our religious community here in Rome this Black Saturday! What's crazy about it was that I found myself sribbling a lot of notes, basically connecting these ideas to Marks' account on Jesus' Resurrection (the Gospel reading this Easter vigil celebration), without having finished the video yet! I just couldn't help myself and was afraid to lose the surge of ideas that came along while watching the video.
Million thanks to you brandon and most especially to Bishop Barron for all the enlightening words and reflections! God's blessings to all those who have watched the video too!😊🙏❤

I have to wonder why so much talk lately on dark night of the soul even in the secular world. Noone mentions the dark night of the senses, dark night of the spirit, the need for moral purification, time for desolation, the many trials and tribulations all an important part of spiritual growth before one ever enters into that deep deep dark night of the soul. Why are these stages ignored? I will now listen to this having lived in desert of darkness over 40 years I understand it's beauty ♥ and can be grateful 🙏for my many dark nights.

Great. I went to high school at Loyola School in N. Y. a long time ago. and then came back to Argentina. Even so, I can perfectly understand your English as I learned it over there. Listening to you seems to me as if a fellow student or a teacher was speaking to me. If only you had been my teacher!!! About your brilliant and enthusiastic explanations, I can respectfully tell you how "Apostolic Letter Salvifici Doloris" (Pope John Paul II) helped me a lot. In a catholic school at those times they did not teach us but rather asked us what we thought about issues. That made me really mad and and filled with frustration. Everybody was so concerned about changing the Church to the ways of society... That sounds familiar to me nowadays
