Salmon Snagger BUSTED at River!!! ILLEGAL FISHING

  • I was just doing some bobber and egg fishing at the river, when this guy kept pulling his bare hook through the hole. He kept snagging fish that came loose, then finally hooked this Chinook in the dorsal fin, and pulled it in. He was going to keep the snagged fish which is illegal fishing. Anyhow, I got this poacher caught on camera, and was luckily able to get him to release the fish again.
    Always stick to the rules guys. Fishing can take patience. That's part of the fun. No need to resort to snagging....

      I always leave it up to the person that got the fish. But somtimes a suttle oh man was he foul hooked? Or something like that,will make it known that at least one person seen it! Then see what they do.

      unless u live on a reserve or way north in the canadian boonies u have no reason to snag. most of these twats r from the states and u guys virtually never need survival fishing, if u do odds r theres not gunna be anyone anywhere near u nor any authorities to stop u and if there was u probly wouldnt be needing to snag fish.

    • @LunaGuldeira
      @LunaGuldeira 4 года назад +9

      hotudk I agree to an extent, but if you need something to survive, then you’re going to get it by one means or another. Snagging is perfectly okay where I used to live (I live in the states, used to live in a mountain range in the mid/southwest part of the US) because it wasn’t possible to get everything you needed from what you were paid. We would make use of everything we got, but if it was for fun (like I do now) I never try to injure the fish. I use barbless hooks, catch and release (unless invasive), etc. so I get you, but it’s not like all of the US are irresponsible towards stuff like that.

    • @LunaGuldeira
      @LunaGuldeira 3 года назад +7

      Austin Bennett Where did you get that it was against the law? Where I used to live, again not speaking for anyone else, it was legal. Another thing, it’s never okay to rob anything from places. That is putting someone else into harms way by making them lose money and stuff of the sort. However, if you are living off the land, like what was said, then you aren’t affecting anyone else. You have to do it in moderation of course, but you get my point. Legality was never related, and you can’t speak for everyone when it concerns laws about stuff like that. There can be exceptions when it comes to laws when it’s concerning the survival of a person, so that’s not a great argument to make.

    To answer your question about whether you should keep a foul hooked salmon...I'm also in the PNW and I think it really depends on a lot of factors. First and foremost, if your snagging on purpose with a bare line and hook; you're wrong. However if you're running like a buzz bomb or other proper salmon gear and foul snag as happenstance...release if possible; keep if it's going to die. Just my thought.

But if it’s just for sport snagging Is a little like cheating. That’s just my opinion I know theirs laws but a fish is a fish people gotta eat. Snag or legit catch it’s still the same fish and same food.

    He then said he was sorry and didn't know it was that big a deal, so I told him about some beautiful spots he could fly to his hearts content..

I can see how snagging fish at night has been used by poachers as the fish are like rabbits in the headlights. Still even after a fishless week on the fly it’s never once crossed my mind to do this, not just because it’s illegal but because it’s unsporting and these magnificent fish deserve better.

    Nope you did the right thing. I lived in Wa for 11 years and love fishing for salmon. Forward of the gill plate and if you foul hookem let it go. Fishing with a barbless hook definitely tests you fishing skills. Tight lines!

      Nice on the bare hook! Its like that on the upper Rogue, i hate salmon season up here, they put a piece of yarn on the hook and its bait?? Its basically a bare hook, thing is %99 of all salmon up here are snagged. There are the occasional fish that will be hooked in the mouth but chances are they are hooked from the outside in, wich technoly they are snagged. If any of you have done any sockeye fishing in Alaska you know what im talking about, instead of calling it snagging they call it lining.

    I was fishing the Root River in Racine, WI above the weir and had to call some guys out on the island above the wier. This was 20 years ago... Man how time flies... Now I fish the Kenai and it's amazing how most of the tourists are the best and most lawful, but many of the locals seem to think they own the fish, It gets irritating, but if you call them out everyone is always happy you did... The rules are for everyone and this guy snagging a fish from the hole just means there is one less for everyone doing it the right way...

      saltwater angling you’re a clown my dude, snaggers are idiots. Fighting is not a good idea on the water as people have weapons. Why you’re defending snaggers though, is beyond ridiculous. You obviously snag them, i recommend you figure out how to fish.

    Okay 1, did he snag it on purpose? 2 willing to bet you that fish was gonna die after the spawn anyways. 3 90% of salmon fishing during thr run is snagged because they run into the hooks. Your bobber your using to suspend your hook with a egg sac? Yeah snagging. When salmon run they dont eat. Once in a blue moon they will. I get what your trying to do and all but odds are the mature salmon die at the end. And way i see it better to have someone put it to use than waste it.
