30 years ago on the Salmon River in Pulaski NY I was fishing just before dusk. A young boy ,maybe 12 came down and started snagging salmon and tossing them in the bushes. It was cold, late season,.kid in water in jeans and sneakers,no waders or boots. He saw me watching him and told me his father was dead. Nobody in the house was old enough to work, his mom looked after his 3 younger brothers and sisters. He said they got welfare and it barely covered rent, utility bills, not much left over for groceries. He said they needed the fish to get thru the winter. I wished him luck and let him be.
Yeah, don't fish illegal. The comment about holding your head under water would have been a good time for a lesson. I have no problem helping some people learn hard lessons.
I showed this video to my kids. You set a good example of what is right and what is wrong. I appreciate you calling this guys out and providing the video so I can teach my boys the RIGHT way to fish. Thank you!
Good on ya, Leif! If this were allowed to happen, there's be a lot less fish to catch. You did the right thing. And stayed calm the whole time. Good job, brother.

To answer your question about whether you should keep a foul hooked salmon...I'm also in the PNW and I think it really depends on a lot of factors. First and foremost, if your snagging on purpose with a bare line and hook; you're wrong. However if you're running like a buzz bomb or other proper salmon gear and foul snag as happenstance...release if possible; keep if it's going to die. Just my thought.

hotudk I agree to an extent, but if you need something to survive, then you’re going to get it by one means or another. Snagging is perfectly okay where I used to live (I live in the states, used to live in a mountain range in the mid/southwest part of the US) because it wasn’t possible to get everything you needed from what you were paid. We would make use of everything we got, but if it was for fun (like I do now) I never try to injure the fish. I use barbless hooks, catch and release (unless invasive), etc. so I get you, but it’s not like all of the US are irresponsible towards stuff like that.
Austin Bennett Where did you get that it was against the law? Where I used to live, again not speaking for anyone else, it was legal. Another thing, it’s never okay to rob anything from places. That is putting someone else into harms way by making them lose money and stuff of the sort. However, if you are living off the land, like what was said, then you aren’t affecting anyone else. You have to do it in moderation of course, but you get my point. Legality was never related, and you can’t speak for everyone when it concerns laws about stuff like that. There can be exceptions when it comes to laws when it’s concerning the survival of a person, so that’s not a great argument to make.
You weren’t being “that guy.” Being “that guy” is yelling “FOUL HOOK!!! FOUL HOOK!!!” before a legitimately fishing person has even landed the fish to let it go.
This I agree with! The ass that makes such a scene of it that the person allmost wants to keep the fish just becuase this other guy is making a huge deal of it! I always leave it up to the person that got the fish. But somtimes a suttle oh man was he foul hooked? Or something like that, will make it known that at least one person seen it! Then see what they do. If it seems they aren't intentionally snagging and its been a grind.. Hell with it I don't say a word!
Well according to these replies I guess I can raid Walmart for food so I don’t go hungry ... #naturalselection Dude he called him out because he carried the fish to the box , and the snagged even said ‘i know it’s been all day tho’ meaning Yh he knows it’s foul and he is planning to keep it ( if you don’t know English) how they treated the fish was not for release . So sit down , my g dint even call out foul hook foul hook ! , he waited till he started walking with the fish as asked him are you gana let it go ?? Hmmm it’s okay to break the law if I’m hungry ... dang no wonder there’s tons of raiders in 2020 , such mentality never fails to amuse me . Maybe try to get a better job ... If u get caught it will be a nice fine ( no food for a month)
@S W if you really think they are fishing because they need something to eat , you really have no idea what your talking about , malnourished and getting Covid ? Bruh we are just talking about the ways to catch the fish here why bring other topics into this ? If they really needed something to eat they would have just used a net and dragged it along the brook ... smh your just some guy who is selfish to everything around him. Ofc no rules apply to you good sir *flies away*
I was recently in Arches National Park and a couple of foreign dudes were pulling out their drone, so I'm like "dude you can't fly that here, nobody wants to see or hear your drone in this beautiful place which is why it is against the law, and there are signs literally everywhere saying so, it's a massive fine and somebody will turn you and your vehicle in, and there is no way out of here without getting caught"...the guy looks at me and says "Thanks man I had no idea" so I pointed to one of the signs like fifty feet away and said "ok but those signs are literally everywhere, and the rangers tell you that when you come in the gate" He then said he was sorry and didn't know it was that big a deal, so I told him about some beautiful spots he could fly to his hearts content.. I saw him later that day and he thanked me again for saving his butt.
theres one loophole to this, just go riiight outside the gates and takeoff, fly the perimeter where you dont bother anyone, still see the same sights basically. I dont think people realize how destructive a drone could be in the national parks if they crash in the wrong spot
nope, if the fish doesn't take the hooks into it's mouth it's snagged and snagging is a scumbag move.. only thing more you could have done would be to call WDFW and stay there for 15 hours til they get there.
Agreed. And LOL - at first I was like..."yeah right"... then finished reading 🤣 So true. I've called WDFW on some guys at Lake Sammamish before. Warden shows up an hour later. Sits in the parking lot for 15 minutes, then leaves without doing anything.... WTF
You guys should see the upper green people were at there with barbed hooks snagging and keeping pinks. There was even a fish counter out there that didnt do nothing
The only Chinook Ive caught was on my fly rod was foul hooked just under the jaw. Got a quick pic, and let her go as she was dropping eggs. 31 lbs on my 9 wt :) Capilano River North Vancouver BC
I've released keeper walleye because they were foul hooked, I've also kept trout that had been foul hooked during the dog days of summer when they were unlikely to survive being released (fishing deep diving crankbaits for bass it happens occasionally). I don't set out to snag fish but how I handle the situation is dependent on the likely of the fish to survive.
Hey how about "don't buy factory farmed animals." Or you can stfu and get down from your high horse. Animals get eaten by humans and the process is often filled with extreme cruelty. God damn I hate hypocrites
Ik about to go salmon fishing myself. What kind of line do you use. I was thinking about using straight braid but I see you were using flouro. Wouldn’t they snap you off
Use braid as your mainline, and I use 15lb mono/fluoro for my leaders! Never use straight braid to the hook, as you want the flex from the mono/fluoro as a "bumper", so the fish don't rip the hooks from their mouth. Hope that helps! Good luck!! 🎣
Awesome vid ...coming from a centerpin float fishing/ fly fishing guy my self....such more satisfying seeing your float drop then to tail snag a dirt dolphin and pull it in backwards while using 100lb braid...I run 8lb main and 5lb drennen leader while float fishing for salmon/browns and steels and never have a issue
Lmao I hardly keep any fish, I catch alot of salmon and steelhead throughout the year and I only legit keep maybe one. I hardly can finish eating the salmon or steelhead before the meat gets freezer burn too, so I don't see the point in stocking a freezer full of fish. Good call, I've seen worst than that kid, I've seen people use a muskie spoon setting the hook in water lol
Good on you. I've switched to the same principle. I only keep what I can eat fresh without freezing. No need to limit out every time. And yes, sadly people do far worse than this dude....
rickiex same people in Wisconsin I’ve seen would snag for salmon with a muskie lure just to keep the salmon and same for Minnesota also I’ve seen people use big ass hooks to snag the salmon
Good on you man. Game wardens can’t be everywhere and it’s people like you that keep those guys in check. I’ve had my fair share of arguments on the river, one resulting in a fight. Usually I only pack when in the woods, but now it’s at the river too, which people should not have to. Props to you!
I would say that we should all use ethics amd we should keep each other accountable......I'll pass on more wardens tho. Most of the time they are just trying to get money from you some how. God's land should not come with fees and penalties. We can limit the catch or kill, but all the reasons you can get ticketed for dumb stuff is ridicules.
I caught some guyss over here snagging at night with spot lights and 3oz weights attached to treble hooks. It was just me and 4 of them. So I played nice and called the warden when I got to my truck.... I wasnt trying to get my ass kicked lol
@@NWFishingSecrets just curious what do you use for video editing I don't have iPhone or apple anything and it's definitely a hard task trying to find a good video editing app on Android

Mind your own fishing rod, let me guess when someone runs a red light do you 2 chase them down and get the license plates...doubt it. Salmon gonna die anyway dont get pissed and the guys catching fish and your not
Just found your channel and love what your doing. I’m from the Olympia area and have fished the Sound for years. I’m just getting back in to fishing and ordered a new kayak yesterday. I plan on fishing all year round in MA-13 or any other areas that look promising. Squid should be getting good soon to, I’ll try my luck at the Stilicoom docks in November.
You're awesome Leif . Takes balls to stand up to one guy yet along a group of guys in the bush . Much respect. Glad the fish have you to stick up for them
Me and the gf have loved watching your vids lately!! Good on you for saying something to that guy!! You’re honestly one of the few people out there that genuinely cares about everything you can and it’s awesome to see!!
For all of us who spend the money on gear, the time learning the techniques, reading, watching videos and getting skunked in the beginning. Learning how to be successful. All while abiding to every letter of the law. Buying licenses every year for over 35 years now in Washington state. I say to hell with these law breakers! Be that guy and bust em every damn time! These fisheries are not unlimited, it's supposed to be challenging for a reason. Otherwise our fisheries would be completely decimated! Leaving nothing but memories of how it once was for our children and grandchildren. There's no shame in holding these cheaters accountable who could care less if our fisheries collapse leaving nothing for generations to come. I respect the hell out of you for saying something, it's the good guys duty to help care for this precious resource. So thank you brother! I hope you never think twice about being "that guy". Better than being that selfish asshole who doesn't care about anything but himself. Nothing but respect for you my friend. Rods up and bobbers down!!
Dude I have literally binged 90% of your videos in the past 2 days. Got my itch to get back out there and tomorrow I'm doing a solo day trip! Love the content!
Some people up there fish to eat not sport. I was a poor ass little kid up there and if I didn't snag as a little kid I would have starved. There are alot of drugs in that area and that's how alot of the poor kids eat. You gotta do what you gotta do sometimes even if it's against the king's orders.
I was recently fishing for bass at a lake and I was using a crankbait. A steelhead that was 10 pounds 9 ounces got snagged on my bait in the tail and I did not have the proper equipment to land it so I fought it for a half hour and when I tried to release it the fish went belly up because it was too tired from the fight. So I kept it... was that the right thing to do?
Yeah, that's the right thing to do, if the fish won't survive, the least you can do is make sure it's not wasted. If you don't eat the fish(if you don't are you really a fisherman?) Give it away to another angler. Here in bayou la batre we do it all the time.
Good for you man! I fish the tributaries out of lake ontario and erie in pa and ny and you run into a lot of foreign ppl snagging like crazy in ny and they get so mad when confronted. The whole reason those areas are great fishing spots is because the majority of anglers follow the rules which allow the fish to populate and grow.
You should know that the host of this channel is foreign. He’s from Germany and is the one telling the native born Americans not to snag fish. So I don’t think whether someone is foreign or not means much at all. There are assholes from everywhere, and whether they are foreign doesn’t mean shit.
see, this is good because an average idiot like myself wouldn't have known that rule and wouldn't have questioned his actions. However, I wouldn't be the kind of person trying to snag it intentionally either.
Respect to you brother, some people call them fishermen but all they do is cheat the system and its not fishing if you aren’t doing it correctly keep up the awesome feed man.
I don't really think it was because it was foul hooked, but more so because they got a fish and you lost yours. I'm sure if you would have landed yours you would have stayed silent. Congrats you saved a salmon another few weeks of their life till they spawn and die anyways. Not pro snagging, but not anti.
Tell that to the tribal members lined up on both sides of the river filling up big plastic boxes in the back of their truck to sell to the Chinese. What a joke.
Right decision all the way. I finally hooked up with a coho. Had to release 2 other's. Super fun fishing here in the PNW of Washington. This Tennessee bass fisherman is hooked on the salmon fishing for life. Awesome channel.
@@NWFishingSecrets Yes Sir your videos definitely have been helpful. This state definitely can keep any avid angler busy. Fishing here is top notch. Keep up the good work on your videos.
I get into arguments all the time with snaggers! I once threw a guy in the river for snagging and trying to keep fish. There’s laws in place for a reason. Stick to them! Or you’ll come across a guy like me that doesn’t put up with it.
Honestly what’s it matter 5 minutes earlier the fish was in the open water where trollers were dragging Mike wide nets scooping them up. Lmao. Guys like you are something special
I found the video educative for people like me new in fishing and don’t know all the rules yet. and wow you have courage to stand up for the right thing and keep the sport clean!
Whatever area you are fishing you can call the department of natural resources and get information or you can go to a local angler store and grab a rule book.
This is how they legally fish for paddlefish on the Missouri River….🤷♂️ 3 point or better, spike only, don’t shoot turkey on the fly, don’t shoot geese and ducks on the ground or water, cannot use crossbows in bow season, can’t use 209 shotgun primers in muzzleloader, barbless hooks only, cannot use non expanding broad heads, cannot spot light varmints during big game season, cannot use electronic callers for turkey, on and on and on….. might as well take a lawyer with you into the woods.
It's fucking stupid is what it is. In the old days, people just went to a location, killed their food and brought it home and that was the end of it. This is what happens when you let rich democrats write rules for people just trying to eat.
I’m a snagger, I just snag them in the mouth. Everyone knows during spawning season the fish don’t eat (they might get aggressive and nip at bait hitting their face though).
Fishing to spawning fish is trashy and pathetic, they don’t have fucking *hands* so they grab shit with their mouth to get it off of their redds. Grow up
No! People that don't follow fishing rules, should be given hefty fines and on top of that, they're not classified as fishermen, their poachers. You did the right thing! Thank you. I don't think they had the intention of letting it go if you didn't step in. You spoke for the animal and possibly saved many more ❤ Thank you for doing this.
im a staunch republican and even i believe they tribes deserve the right to net. Its been their way of life for a long time and theres not that many of them left. If we let everyone do this there wouldn’t be any salmon left. If you want to dip net maybe move to alaska.
Lol natives are the worst affenders not all but definitely a majority in British Columbia they target sockeye end up killing tons of steelhead and coho and just dump them back in the river daily I've seen lots of time the net's sitting in the rivers for a few day's full of dead fish.saw a full smoke house size of a barn all the fish thrown to the dump because a row of fish was facing the wrong direction and wold bring bad luck to the band. and there bizzy selling the fish steady 80% of them not just for food and the COs turn a blind eye because of there status card and will get the old your harassing us card and this is are traditional ways😂but is it
Always follow the rules... where I fish I see clowns every 50yards snagging, sometimes I feel like I need to be that guy saying something. Gets me in trouble sometimes though. You did the right thing
@@colinrogers9927 well said. Have no problem with people owning guns and using them as last resort. Then we got idiots thinking its ok to escalate things over a fish and shoot it out need be.
@@chrish5224 A terrible reason to conceal carry. You’re gonna get trigger happy over an argument on snagging fish? You deserve to get your licensed revoked.
Im just on the other side of the border in Vancouver BC, i see this sht every time around this time as well and always make a fuss. Props to you - Subbed.
Really love this channel man. I'm just getting into fishing and thought what difference does snagging make if you're gonna eat the fish anyways but this video led me to do some research and I get what the problem is now.
Salmon snagging is actually legal and common in some places. In fact I have some snagging gear, though I never really got much enjoyment out of it. however I now live in Oregon so I leave that snagging gear at home.
If keeping to eat I can't guess as to what the problem would be. I do know the fishing community can be incredibly incredibly toxic. I don't like catch and release to start but snagging and realesing deserves a smack in the chops.
I bet! Heard of that kind of stuff happen too. Luckily everyone else at the hole started to speak up too. At that point he gave in. Thank you for watching! 🎣
A fish is not worth putting an assault conviction on your permanent record. Definitely not worth a manslaughter or murder conviction. Say something, if it gets heated, call the police. Please don't be trying to shoot people while fishing.
Funny im new to the sport of fishing but I have more empathy and have looked up proper ways to handle the fish so I don’t go around hurting them more then the hook needs to
I appreciate it. Thanks man. As someone who is just getting into fishing I thought I would be Fish Hungry and want to keep every fish I catch but I have come to realize its super satisfying to catch what you need and release what you dont.
Talked to a game warden one time about it asked why it was illegal since the fish die anyway and they were hatchery fish destined for the food bank he told me it's not so much the fish that are brought in but the fish that are injured in the process and that made scents to me
This is awesome. We need to follow the rules to protect our fisheries for the future. I've been too timid to speak up in the past but I think I will from here on out. Thanks!
I got a picture of a guy here in Arkansas who snagged a 80+lbs blue catfish and kept it but its legal to do so here sad to say it literally takes no skill or patience
I fish for sea trout on the fly in the dark and there are times where to get back out on to the bank I’ve turned my head torch on, and I’ve seen some huge fish, salmon as well hugging a rock. I can see how snagging fish at night has been used by poachers as the fish are like rabbits in the headlights. Still even after a fishless week on the fly it’s never once crossed my mind to do this, not just because it’s illegal but because it’s unsporting and these magnificent fish deserve better.
Just report it to be safe! They'll be around fishing or with you in the crowd and without any warning after retention you'd be ask for your Fishing license and ID to write you up a hefty Citation and confirmations of all your catches and equipment's used to fish and you'd be lucky if your transportation is not confiscated and serve time too. Read All the fishing and hunting regulations and consequences before you start the activity. Learn and know it.
saltwater angling absolutely 100% incorrect. They will eat out of aggression, spawning instinct and many other factors. I have seen numerous underwater videos of spawning salmon eating in rivers. I have seen them in person, move out of their way to eat my roebag/fly. The conditions need to be right and you need to be skilled enough to read the water and the fish. If you cannot catch a salmon, don’t say they don’t bite, just be honest and say you can’t get them to bite. There are lots of tip videos online you can watch to learn how to fish, but don’t snag. The only people who snag are the ones with no patience and a lack of skill. If you want to hook and land 100 fish a day go catch some bluegills, as a good day of salmon fishing where i’m at is hooking 5-10 (in the mouth) and maybe landing 2 or 3. You can take 100 drifts in the same goddamn spot and not get bit til the 101st drift. Thats just the game brother, creek fishing is hard.
saltwater angling their mouth doesn’t need to open fully, the baits im using are tiny and so are the hooks. They’re not biting hamburgers under a float, its a single bead or small roebag/fly. In the main lake when they eat an 8” spoon then will open their mouth fully because its a larger bait. They eat out of aggression and spawning instinct. It’s been theorized that they eat other salmon’s eggs eggs and flies for a few reasons, the the 2 i can highlight for you are: 1. If they eat another salmons eggs, it gives their eggs a better chance at survival due to lower competition once they hatch and 2: eating flies and other insects for small amounts of protein needed to continuously march upriver. They also eat things like leeches and small crayfish that could potentially harm their eggs once they’ve released. I’ve caught so many fish with the bait all the way back in their mouth but that is irrelevant. The ONE AND ONLY point you need to know is that their is CLEAR INTENTION from the fish to hit that bait. Many other fish species also eat out of aggression, such as a 8” bass eating an 8” jerkbait, which happens all the time. Do you consider that snagging? Again the only thing you need to recognize is the intention of the fish to hit the bait. If there is no intention to hit the bait, it is a snag. If the fish does not want the bait they move out of the way, which i’ve also seen many times. That means its time to switch up baits or the water is too clear. You probably don’t even care enough to read all this, and i don’t blame you. It’s easier to be ignorant and give me snobby short responses than to argue the points i’ve laid out. You try again.
great video! gotta follow the rules as much as it sucks when you’ve been fishing all day, gotta let those go. Also that looks like the carbon, any luck with the silvers)
Totally with you! Of course it sucks to have to let go a fish you want to keep, but without that rule the rivers would turn into a snag fest everywhere. And you sure know where this is! Definitely Silver in that river.... 🎣 good luck!
Where at on the Carbon? I have been going every weekend for the past month and last weekend the zombies were all floating and the fishing got really slow. Looking for another good hole to try.
Nice on the bare hook! Its like that on the upper Rogue, i hate salmon season up here, they put a piece of yarn on the hook and its bait?? Its basically a bare hook, thing is %99 of all salmon up here are snagged. There are the occasional fish that will be hooked in the mouth but chances are they are hooked from the outside in, wich technoly they are snagged. If any of you have done any sockeye fishing in Alaska you know what im talking about, instead of calling it snagging they call it lining.
You made the right call years ago when I still lived in Washington I was fishing north beach by deception pass bridge from shore for pinks and I accidentally snagged one right in the butthole lol but as soon as I got the fish on shore and realized it was snagged it was immediately released. If this guy you caught on camera and confronted was acting that with all those people around I'm quite certain he would have kept his snagged fish.
Actually Adam you can keep foul hooked fish in salt water. You cannot intentionally snag or attempt to snag, but if you're fishing and foul hook one it's legal. We foul hook fish when we're trolling.

You have to do it in moderation of course, but you get my point. Legality was never related, and you can’t speak for everyone when it concerns laws about stuff like that. There can be exceptions when it comes to laws when it’s concerning the survival of a person, so that’s not a great argument to make.
Brett my comment was directed to Larry Lancaster dude...
Yeah man - honestly that guy wasnt dying in the wilderness looking for a meal to survive. Glad you posted the video
Thats me 😂😂I do that to people because a lot of them keep them and if u yell that they will get scared and won t keep the fish
Well according to these replies I guess I can raid Walmart for food so I don’t go hungry ...

So sit down , my g dint even call out foul hook foul hook ! , he waited till he started walking with the fish as asked him are you gana let it go ??

He then said he was sorry and didn't know it was that big a deal, so I told him about some beautiful spots he could fly to his hearts content..
I saw him later that day and he thanked me again for saving his butt.

Good luck!! 🎣

So I kept it... was that the right thing to do?
not gonna throw back a dead one lol

Being foreign is irrelevant to snagging fish, unless you intended to express another point.

Salmon don't close their mouth when they enter spawning stage only time you catching em is snagging
saltwater angling absolutely 100% incorrect.
@@theunluckyfisherman4845 wrong they dont eat they swing their head to hit shit out of aggression, there mouth does not open fully nor close try again
saltwater angling their mouth doesn’t need to open fully, the baits im using are tiny and so are the hooks. They’re not biting hamburgers under a float, its a single bead or small roebag/fly. In the main lake when they eat an 8” spoon then will open their mouth fully because its a larger bait. They eat out of aggression and spawning instinct. It’s been theorized that they eat other salmon’s eggs eggs and flies for a few reasons, the the 2 i can highlight for you are:
1. If they eat another salmons eggs, it gives their eggs a better chance at survival due to lower competition once they hatch and
2: eating flies and other insects for small amounts of protein needed to continuously march upriver.
He had to let the fish go because it was not hoocked by the mouth? Is that correct?

siferdog park at the skate park and follow the trail
Good stuff man, thumbs up for this
The greatest part of this is when the snagger ask the douche to hold his head underwater cause the fish wants a pic too🤣
Good on you man. It probably has been all day if he's fishing a bare hook. 🤣 What an idiot. Keep up the good work.
Quite likely... Would catch more fish if he put some eggs on there! 🤣 Thank you Denny!
Snagg em all!!! If one "native" American can gillnet hundreds of salmon in one net at a time an American should be able to snag at least one to go eat
Thank you!! I'm amazed how out in the open snaggers and flossers are on the rivers. I used to live to fish Stevens Creek on the Hump, and it's maddening how many idiots openly do it, and little enforcement there is
Flossing isn't illegal.
@@duckwacker8720 what is flossing?
@@ARCSTREAMS that thing you should do after brushing your teeth
@@GKXPress not sure if you being comical or serious but what does that have to do with fishing and what they are talking about? and fyi you are suppose to floss before brushing your teeth
@@ARCSTREAMS actually flossing before brushing is bad because you are pushing all the excess plaque and bacteria up into your gums that you would be removing first by brushing.
