This was originally a scripted video discussing the pros and cons of the Fontaine Story Quest, but about two minuets into the recording i realized I didn't even believe my own cons, and there was no way in hell i was going to be able to get across how i actually felt properly in a scripted format as a result the following turned into a twenty minute rant about Genshin Best Questline

@@hanifthabibi7270Personally I think that people misunderstood the quest because they're not used to the "show not tell" way of writing which is very rarely used in Genshin, because the quest only hints without straight up telling you that quite some time passed since the archon quest and Furina has been passing all this time in her home alone just kinda stagnating and being lost, and also that it only hints that Furina's efforts have been recognized as the citizens were told that she gave up her powers to save fontaine.
Some people picked up on those hints and enjoyed the quest, others didn't, I think the only thing they should've done better is emphasize that her boundary was doing more harm than good to her instead of just vaguely implying it.

I think Fontaine aq is really great but it has some problems, at least for me.
      1: The pacing
During when they are trying to come up with a plan to trap furina in a trial or when they are taking stroll around Fontaine, it feels like the story slows down dramatically, however; we do get to talk to Mona and N which gave some insight about the prophecy which was nice and builds to the final confrontation we have with furina.
2: The whale (Narwal) and childe
I feel like if the whale wasn’t in the story, I don’t think it would change much. I initially thought that the whale was the root cause of the prophecy, but it had nothing to do with it. It was just a pet for skirks master (but skirk gives us some juicy information about the gnosis so it is not all bad). Also childe being deemed guilty wasn’t really explained all that well. He basically was guilty by I guess association or as a distraction which is extremely convenient because what would have happened if he wasn’t in Fontaine at the time or if he didn’t decide to fight the whale. I feel like everything was just left to coincidence. (But I guess it does tie into focators plot point of putting her faith in humanity, so I guess it make so sense)
My last point that I find interesting is the traveler lack of involvement in the story. Instead of us taking an active role like we have done in previous regions, we are for lack of a better term, the witness to everything (probably similar to a jury presiding of a court case) it was an interesting change in how the traveler usually is in each region which I found pretty cool.
All in all if I had to rate Fontaine, I would probably give it a 9.3-9.4. It was written way better than inazuma for sure.

Furina is legitimately my favorite archon. No, it does not matter to me that she's human, the fucking work she put in to her nation, the pain she suffered through, and the absolute selflessness of it all because of how much she loved her people and wanted to help Focalors avert *everybody's deaths* is, to me, what makes her an archon. And a goddamned great one at that.
I have never been so turned around on someone so hard. I also guessed she wasn't exactly being truthful, and had theories that she might be a twin archon in reality and that the responsible twin was collecting indemnitium (not too far off, technically speaking), but it didn't dawn on me what the implications of Furina doing that were until just before the trial, and throughout it I kept saying "Guys wait I get it this is necessary but ease up."
The whole trial felt like kicking a puppy. And in the aftermath of the entire Fontaine arc, Furina just... vanishes. No applause, no thank yous from anyone but Neuvilette and Traveler. Hell, in her quest you learn the people of Poisson are still pissed at her about what happened so I dunno if anyone outside of Neuvilette and Traveler even know the truth about Furina's sacrifice. There are probably guesses but they might be the only two who really TRULY know what she went through.
And yeah, I cried. I cried at the trial, I cried as she whimpered and limped away after we beat the Narwhal, I cried when she got her Vision and had hope reignited in herself for herself in probably the first time in 500 years. She is an absolute chad and goddamnit I want to enroll her in therapy.

Neuvillette seemed to be the only one that cared. But he should have at least told the people what she has done to save them. I can understand though that he can't draw attention to what happened with Focalors or Fountaine might be in danger if Celestia knew. And he gave Furina a vision. But still she deserved more acknowledgment for what she went through.

specially considering Furina’s story specializes on heroism, altruism, selflessness and willpower adding to that the idea of someone so fragile (relative to GI universe power scaling) willingly suffered for very long to express those themes (the “fragile” factor or her gender/size, as weird as it sounds is a big biological factor to audience reaction)
there’s also other themes like ironies such as her receiving all the doubts and negativity while in reality what she’s doing is for their sake
those themes appears very well to humans. (there are countless examples IRL since the beginning of civilizations of humans worshipping characters who did or possess such themes) so unless other regions have those themes emphasized as hard as Fontaine’s the bar remains high

Fontaine is highly inspired by the bible
focalors, furina and the oratrice are the holy trinity
three separate entities that are technically one... one was sent to become a human and go through all the hardships
Death of one of them equated to the forgiveness of sins, oratrice besides looking like a scale also is shaped like a cross

But with the Traveler they certainly didn't feel like the protagonist for a good portion of Fontaine's story, especially in Act 2

The prison arc has it's purpose, specially when it comes to crumbs of hints at Furina's story. We experience through that arc what it's like to act out and pretend to be someone else, and how interminable and mind-numbing it can be to do the same thing over and over and over. It makes you, the player, gain just enough experience of what Furina lives through for 500 years so that you can empathize with her when the truth comes out. That part of the story isn't about meeting Wriothesly and Sigewynne, and it's more about mirroring Furina's suffering for both the traveler but also for us as players.

In Romaritime Harbor, she rolls in with a posse of guards, and in an attempt to showboat, she challenges the Traveler to a fight then and there. However, the Traveler doesn’t back down and accepts her challenge. Only then does she back off, which doesn’t go unnoticed by the Traveler. And like you said, Soul: Even Venti could wreck someone’s shit if he wanted to. In hindsight, that was the first clue.

Until THIS goddamn Quest in specific, I've watched many people's reactions to it and I can say I've had my fair amount of rewatches of it and oh goodness, it still just hurts to see it, I've never been this close from breaking down in tears with a story, I can confidently say that Furina became my favorite character in Genshin and it's not even close as well as being one of my all time favorite characters in all of gaming, I must say I've had a few headcanons for her hoping they would become canon (most of them stupid now that i look back at it), but instead, we ended with a character so much better it'll be nigh to impossible for me to surpass, and Neuvillette is for me just as much of a GOAT as Furina is for taking so much, he first lost his Melusine friend who saw the good side on humanity, then his human friend who decided to get himself jailed in order to keep Neuvillette as Iudex, then Focalors, the god that took him under her wing, shown him the good in humans AND then restored his Authority only for the price being her taking her own life, and in a way he no longer will have Furina who is finally a free human by his side any time soon, Fontaine as a whole made a three year wait that was slowly chipping away my enjoyment for the game due to burn out so worth it and completely revitalized my love for this game. I must be missing a lot of details, but it's so hard not to love this story we've got.

I'm so glad I'm not alone in loving this story. Both Furina and Focalors are heroes. And Furina in particular did something I don't remember any other Genshin character do. You know how everyone adores the Traveler for no apparent reason and gives them anything and everything they want.
She managed to deny the Traveler's request to tell them the truth when they were in the magic box. Then later, when the Traveler watches the scenes from her life, they get a replay of that conversation, and you can see how shocked they are to find out, that even if they had had the time and the box wasn't opened on stage, Furina would still have kept her secret. Because it was the secret safeguarding her people.
Her will is so strong and her heart so pure with intent, she can even resist the ridiculous godlike charm that the writers just gave to the MC. This has been an annoying characteristic of the MC they just informed us as players about, and I'm glad someone basically told the Traveler they're not the most important being to ever exist, and it fills me with joy.

@@silverhawkscape2677 this admiration is way too personal to be explained by their deeds. I'm pretty sure Xiao has seen and done more heroic things over the course of his long life than the Traveler could imagine. Tough people like Kujou Sara become sincere and embarassed talking to the Traveler. My point is, everyone is suddenly heart-eyed near them. Their appeal is dangerously close to that of a harem comedy protagonist. In the Sumeru quest, a fortune-teller that Setaria went to literally said about the Traveler's love life 'wait, this can't be right... that many?!!'
I'm not saying it isn't justified in some way. It's long been clear that the Traveler is a god of sorts. May they are the ultimate creator. Maybe they are a being of pure love. It's just that in the absence of a direct explanation all the doting and pining from people who are exceptional themselves looks too much, and it's a bit annoying.

@@silverhawkscape2677have you heard her teapot lines? She apologizes for being too strict and sounds like a schoolgirl in love. They all do. Suddenly everyone becomes a softer, more vulnerable version of themselves talking to the Traveler. How many times have we heard a variation of 'I feel like I can trust you'? Why? I get that this is a fantasy of many people (players I mean) to have this exact effect on others, but that's just not what happens in life. You could argue that Genshin is a game, but when it's not about the Traveler, everyone is pretty normal, i.e. they hide their wounds, they're not in a hurry to admit other people's superiority, etc. They only care to open to the MC. Sure the Traveler can fight, but that's pretty irrelevant. Again, I get that's is a fantasy of 'I'll do amazing things and everyone will love me' for the players, but I've come to expect better then that from Genshin's writing. I really hope they explain this personal magic of the MC.

Another minor detail I noticed while reading act 5 Archon Quest from beginning to the end that's so lore important to the story.
Is that we know that people who disappeared in the primordial water reverts back into an oceanid and can still harm or save in the primordial water realm of its victims shown in Vascher's death scene.
That lore plotpoint was brought back in Navia's story in the act 5 Archon quest when she fell into the primordial water and got saved by Silver Meluse during the primordial water trial (her closest assistent who protectes her from Vascher who murdered her father) who died in the primordial water flood incident in Poisson and tells Navia to let go of her dead ones and move on as the Spina de rosula president as they quickly bring her back to the mortal realm.
Little minor details like that pays it off so well in the last act from the previous acts and I love it that Fontaine keeps doing this back to back, rather being sidelining these lore relevant events to the wayside unlike previous quest except Sumreu to some extent. Same goes for the prophecy.
Fontaine's story is really that good;)

Fontaine Story Quest is so damn good and even through there is a happy ending it’s not all sunshine and rainbows cause there are people who dissolved into water before hand and they didn’t magically come back to life they are gone for good.
The prison arc does feel like filler majority of the time solving mysteries and interacting with various NPCs that could have been skip but I like how the prison is portrayed as a good thing. The people there majority of them are happy and rather stay when their sentence is done then go back up to the surface and be judged for having a criminal record. It was scene 182 500, or something like that. If you divide the number by 365, the number of days in a year, you get 500. They purposefully numbered the scenes to illustrate Furina's daily life, her daily life for 500 years.

Whilst I agree, for some reason a part of me likes Sumeru’s story more. I think the whole Wanderer situation just hit different for me. A character erasing their existence so that even their arch nemesis (Dottore) doesn’t even know he exists is so badass. Wanderer is literally free to plan for as long as he wants with significant knowledge of his enemy and Dottore can do NOTHING about it (unless he personally knows a Descender who has kept him up-to-date somehow, which would be disappointing, because I wanna see Dottore say “who are you!?” as Wanderer obliterates him).

AQ really made me feel things, like I genuinely can't move on from it for daysss haha! The story quest was good, too, but some of the lines from MC and Paimon, especially when they were asking her to consider and help the theater group something sounded a bit too close to guilt tripping. Like let's say it was weeks or maybe months after the AQ, that still is 500 years of suffering she's trying to recover from, and then you see the 2 talking about "how can we help them, we already said Furina was gonna help" in front of the girl... Like bruh. I still really liked it, it reinforces one Furina's ascension lines with one of the scenes in Poisson, La Vaguelette was such a good song, the NPC's were very nice, too, voice direction was really good. It was just that thing at the start that kinda put me off.

It takes a lot of trops from the predecesor (divine machine, bullied archon with split personality, male lead character with stoic personality) but flops in many ways. 4.1 story is a good example of that. It is basically just a waste of time and if you remove it and associated characters from the plot, it won't be affected in any way.

I have one thing to the story: it is absolutely, 100% not realistic. And yet I consider it minor because I absolutely don't mind. There's no way Furina could keep the act up for 500 years, someone would definitely call her out on doing nothing godlike within weeks at most. And even if she somehow managed to suppress any opposition for so long, the breakdowns we got to witness would be also matter of weeks, months at worst. But after 500 years, she'd just have learned all the patterns and could do everything without even thinking about it, the less bothering or feeling any pain.
But as I said, I find it extremely easy to forget about these things because they're not important. Realistic story would be boring and I much enjoyed the rollercoaster we got.
I had many theories throughout the story, I was right at many places and I was wrong elsewhere. For example I did believe Focalors (the Archon) and the Gnosis are in the Oratrice (right) but I also believed the voice in the fountain was Focalors', not Furina's (wrong). I did believe Furina was not a brat and had some major struggle (right) but I also believed she's desperately trying to keep the Oratrice in function (wrong, she cared about trials, not the machine). And I loved how in the end all these things were resolved and seeing things I predicted right was so satisfying.

Act III was boring but if you think about it after seeing Act V, it was foreshadowing Furina. Doing the same shit, day in, day out, over and over, meeting the quota just to do it all over again, asking questions, thinking you made a break, only for it to turn up dry. We got to live a few moments of her 500 years in Act III.

After starting to pay even more attention to Genshin Impact's lore since Fontaine's release, Act 5 of Fontaine's story was thoroughly satisfying and foreshadowed.
It's sad that I cannot say the same for Star Rail, there's many consistency errors and things revealed in the story that don't naturally line up with the lore in comparison to Genshin, like Pela's age not fitting into the timeline of Belobog at all being a more known one. There's also the fact that I think latter half of the Xianzhou story just wasn't that good, It felt a bit like Inazuma all over again, put in a cool ending so people forget the issues of the overall story. Oh and don't even get me started on Belobog's story, but at least that story is known to have gone through a rewrite
But the saving grace is that the dialogue and characters are well written, It's ratio of characters I'd consider to have good writing is higher than Genshin's, the only characters I consider to be a miss in Star Rail are Blade and Guinaifen, but I only put Guinaifen there because she straight up doesn't have screentime
    Also godlike transition at 2:14

Most of the characters have more depth in general. The main characters(traveler and paimon) act more like characters now, although not really 'main' character in this case. The story is overall well done. While the fortress was filler-ish, I thought it was interesting experience and gameplay overall. The gameplay with the mystery, court system, and whatnot really enhances the engagement with the story by combining it with gameplay. There are also quite a bit more cutscenes than early stories and it looks amazing.
My main gripes are how the court proceedings are handled and some other minor stuff. Some arguments were quire questionable yet no one questioned the relevance, but its relatively minor complaints. There are some other minor issues with how the lore and whatnot is explained. But its a pretty darn good story overall

I think it's for the better you tossed the script, it just sounds so much more authentic this way, I think.
Anyways, I will forever stand that 4.0 story was just alright, 4.1 was really bad, but it was all worth for 4.2, bah, it was worth going through all 5 regions just for this one archon quest. If I'm being honest I do not often cry when playing games, but in all my years of playing Furina is the third time I felt so sad because of a bunch of pixels.
I was almost devastated for a moment there, because I know I would never be able to bear so much pain all by myself, even with somebody to share my troubles it would be nigh impossible, and she didn't even want to open up before the traveler, so that her efforts are not futile. The only other characters I ever felt so much compassion towards were the Hollow Knight and Mio and Noah from Xenoblade Chronicles.
    Back to Furina
The scene where she just fell on her t"hrone" with tears in her eyes, that was the moment that broke me, and I think people the fact that this scene is pretty much the prophecy fulfilled for Furina alone. Nobody believed her, so she was alone, surrounded by people judging her, weeping on the "throne" by herself, and since she was found out, she was sure the people of Fontaine will die, because she did not keep them believing her to be the archon. It was just heartbreaking.

The one minor but big thing I’ve noticed hoyo doing is mastering the art of artistic timing. You never realize and appreciate the nuance of how many times they intentionally slow down moments in the story, during certain sequences and what not.
The most importantly and obvious example people may have experience is the fact that the auto play button simply doesn’t work in the story (the story progresses even when the option is off during certain segments), which to some may be a bit baffling, but imo that strange choice elevated the immersion of the story-I’ve watched some reactions to the 4.2 story and THEY DIDNT EVEN NOTICE AUTOPLAY WAS OFF

Focalors goal was to destroy one of the celestial thrones. Same as Lumine is trying to do. We don't fully know the extent of those or how important they are, but Lumine says "I have to engulf the thrones of heaven", this sentence is worded many times by many characters. It is somewhat likely that they need the thrones in order to dictate what happens regarding fates. It is also likely now that Fontaine is revealed that Venti did not give Dvalin "Anemo" power he gave him his gnosis or the power of the gnosis so he is now a sovereign as well the ball of light that is seen in that cut scene resembles the ball that Neuvilette is given. Venti's words about Dvalin are VERY Similar to how Focalors talk about Neuvilette. Apep is saved by Nahida and Azdaha is saved by Zhongli, so their is a pattern that Hoyo is trying to hide. The only dragon that is missing is the electro dragon and so far it has not been mentioned at all its like it's taboo to talk about it at all. I highly recommend to look back at the lore in Genshin, it's not trivial everything has a purpose. Ei did not start the vision hunt decree for whatever reason she gave, she lied and that story is not finished by a mile. Most of the archons never tell you straight out why they do things Focalors was an exception to inform Neuvilette.

It's good to see that mihoyo learned what a low quality story inazuma was. But do you think they will repeat in the future?
