  • Nicknamed "Big Bass" by none other than Dr. Dre, Brian Gardner has had a long and fascinating career mastering for Allen Zentz as well as Bernie Grundman. He has a tell-tale dead wax etching and a sound signature all his own. Enjoy! -- My cold open was supposed to be much hotter -- I had a lead-in snipped that was blocked so had to cut it......

The best sounding copies of Discovery are mastered by Stan Rickenbacker (SR/2 in deadwax). I agree, it sounds awesome.

Love these videos when you talk about specific pressings & masterings. Checked my Steely Dan and it's a Santa Maria Brian Gardner and my Alice Cooper is a Terre Haute Brian Gardner. They are both just as amazing as you presented. Cheers from Central California!

Your deep dives into vinyl are a refreshing break from the typical VC video.
Your listening room has come together nicely.

    Hi Tim,
How are you? This is Mark Anthony K. ..Im one of the regular Co hosts on Patrick The Vinyl Archivist live stream.
Great episode. ..I do enjoy these type of videos. Paul (BarakaPDub) has done similar type videos. .but I can never get enough of these.
I must say though that while the mastering engineers play a part in the sound of these albums...it's really the mixing engineers should get far more credit. ..the sound stage and overall sound is mainly in their hands. ..you can do any sort of instrument panning while mastering.
The mix engineer for Blizzard of Oz is Max Norman (I believe)..honestly. .I think that album sounds very thin...especially Randy's guitar...even the great Brian Gardner couldn't do much for that sound. ..but the rest of the records you mentioned do sound far better.
    Take care

Hi Mark! I know you well - thanks for watching and commenting. I agree with you re mixing, not many people discuss it! Hope to see you on a stream soon. 👍🏻

My "blizzard" record is a bit flat, but I think it's probably the record rather than the mastering! Maybe it was a copy just before the stamper broke, or I may have a "club" pressing (need to check)!

It's funny you mentioned that he mastered a Queen album near the end of the video. When I do a search through my collection in Discogs I get a few but Queen - The Game (UK pressing) pops right up. And yes, it sounds awesome. The bass on Another One Bites the Dust is fitting for someone nicknamed "Big Bass."

I think Dre referred to him as 'Big Bass Brian' but ya he is cool. I used to use 'Dopeman' to test sub excursion limits. If you listen close enough you can hear some bleed when the group would punch in and punch out on the 808😊.

My particular copy of Royal Scam has the trademark seagulls on BOTH sides next to AZ :) - no flower for me on this one. It was a fairly recent pickup that I assumed was decent, being a clean ABC pressing. It delivers! I may post a vinyl rip one day on my channel. I assume he just mixed it up with his etchings. I wonder if 2 seagulls are inferior to a flower and 1 seagull. Maybe the holly grail is 2 flowers.. 😄🌻
