Work on the library on College Avenue in New Brunswick 1993 ground all the motor joints out and reported the whole building to match the new edition came out beautiful
If your in Chicago.. north side. You won’t find a better place to get materials than frerks. Everything you need, and very helpful, knowledgeable in the old ways, and more importantly some of the newer ways to point
I just did a little repointing on my 1922 brick home in VA. I checked my sand for void space and had that brown sugar consistency! I'm glad I saw this, cuz everyone else seems to have too much lime, much more moist stuff, and I was beginning to think I'd screwed it up! I wish I had done the buff color, its just a little too white, but hey. DIY LOL. Thanks!
The reason for striking the mortar with brush to take away the slick surface left by the truck pointer. The striking with the brush allows carbonation to take place.
The curing process would make for a very expensive repair. I (generally) wouldn't trust the home owner to spray the burlap ever day, meaning if I'm not there doing other work for the duration, I would have to stop by once or twice a day for a week. That doesn't come cheap.
@Surrender Singal, yes the word bungalow did originate in India. But the concept of having a house with a relatively low profile and a wide, open porch came to be known as a bungalow” here in the US. A Chicago bungalow, on the other hand does not have an open front porch but it’s considered a specific type of bungalow.
Take a sample of the old mortar to the mason supply yard to have it analyzed so that it matches the old mortar for texture and color. A paint brush is the wrong brush to use. Should have been a churn brush.

My house bungalow was build is 1932, can I use type N mortar? I hear that softer mortar is for house built before 1930.
7days to keep burlap wet? I never seen that before. But it looks cool
Where can hydraulic lime be purchased? Having a hard time finding a supplier in Iowa.
Here in Chicago, Henry Frerk Sons is the main supplier, and they source it from Saint Astier: limes.us/products/natural-hydraulic-lime-nhl/
