Lol I had a drivers ed teacher in the tenth grade that was so good looking and nice...I had a crush. He knew it to but I didn't care, course was 2 weeks long in CA...1970's Needless to say I took drivers ed 3X and did great each time. All of that just to see him. Jan thank you.
When I was in my twenties I was an aspiring musician. I had a Fostex four track cassette deck, a few effects and I had a ball, though demos sent out back then most commonly were consigned to oblivion. I'm getting back into it 30 years later and just for me. The technology has changed so much that I'm trying to catch up with it and this sort of video presentation helps an old guy with the basics.
I’ve been creating film soundtracks and using my setup for voiceover for a few years. Once in a while I jump on here (RUclips) to revisit initial startups/setups. I've been just recording with my iPhone or Android over the years and it's been fun but the sound quality is terrible. I only play guitar and sing and I think I landed on the Scarlett 2i2 and a Blue Spark SL condenser mic along with either a GarageBand or Pro Tools First. I'm excited to get started! Thank you for the input!
If you are starting a home recording studio on a budget, NEVER get a large diaphragm microphone. It's true, in the right situation you will appreciate how effortlessly it will pick up sound, in the wrong situation you will pick up noises from your surroundings that you never knew existed. A quality dynamic microphone will be your friend until you have the cash to completely soundproof your recording booth. A dynamic mic will not pick up noise from a near by road or a door shutting in another part of your home, for example. It will keep you in control of your recorded audio. Otherwise, good advice on the other points.
@@laurenneloms7953 Shure is a solid brand, the SM58 or SM57. RUclips is full of reviews on dynamic microphones. Sometime you can get a very good starter mic from a lesser known brand and still get solid performance. The side benefit of using a dynamic mic is the advantage of using in live performances too.

Seeing this in July, 2020. Appreciate your enthusiasm and concern! Anyhow, #1 step really is to PLAN THE LAYOUT of a home studio. This Corona lockdown has kind of forced me to get back into music. In the past couple of years I've been having fun singing and recording karaoke. In the past few months I've used a Mackie ProFX6V3 USB mixer connected to my laptop running Cakewalk by Bandlab. It is free and superb. But it can only send out two tracks to the DAW; either one stereo or two mono. The DAW sends two tracks back to the mixer and I can listen in real time to what is being recorded; zero latency in other words. So I'm planning to supplement it with a MOTU M4 Audio interface, which has 4 tracks in and 4 tracks out. MOTU has been back-ordered because of the virus but is shipping them out now. Main issue for me has been to find a SUITABLE DESK on which I can rest my 61 Key Keyboard Controller, AND a computer keyboard/mouse. I've searched all over the online sources, can't find a good affordable one that has two pull-out drawers for that purpose. If I set the MIDI keyboard on the desk, it is too high. I'll just keep searching I guess. By the way it is just a couple of weeks ago that I got the keyboard, an M-Audio Keystation 61 Mk3. $200 USA. Superb semi weighted keys. I also have a full 88 key upright 42" piano and after much thought and research, decided against a 49 key keyboard and chose 61. I love the sound of the C2 octave which I would have lost with a 49 key unit.
i do have a large diaphragm studio microphone but I like shotgun mics for recording at home preferably as it does not pick up all the background sound. Granted software can suppress a lot of that but I like the idea of doing most of it before it gets in to the computer.
